An elementary school principal in Vail, Arizona, kept her cool when a parent threatened to arrest her last week.

Mesquite Elementary School Principal Diane Vargo called police on Thursday, September 2, after a dad and two other adults confronted her on school grounds, KVOA reported.

“Today was a tough day. One of the most powerful tools as adults is the behavior that we model to young people — and the behavior that was modeled today makes me really sad," Vail Unified School District Superintendent John Carruth told The Washington Post.

The incident started because the dad's son was told to quarantine after coming in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19. The kid was going to miss a class field trip because of the quarantine, too.

The upset dad and his group livestreamed themselves on Instagram claiming that they were going to make a citizen's arrest of the principal and showed off what they said were "law enforcement grade" zip ties, KGUN reported.

When the group showed up at the school, Vargo invited them into her office to talk.

“There will be no arrests here occurring on the Mesquite campus,” she told the men on the livesteam.

Vargo told the men to leave after an argument and then called the police when they refused. The men eventually left before Tucson police officers showed up.

“Showing up to a school with zip ties is not a way to solve a problem,” Carruth said. “ … We welcome people with varying backgrounds and opinions, but we’ve got to come together. This is not okay.”

The identities of the men were not released because no one was arrested. Vargo wasn't harmed, and the school district is still deciding whether to press charges against the group.
