These Iconic Fast Food Restaurants Started In California

On April 5, the Los Angeles Times published a feature detailing Southern California's prominent role in creating Fast Food America. In fact, some of the most prolific fast-food chains today got their start here in California! Columnist Patt Morrison writes, "It’d almost be easier to list the fast-food chains that did not begin in these palmy latitudes"

From burgers to burritos, to ice cream, here are some of the most iconic fast-food chains that were created in California:

  • In-N-Out Burger - Est. 1941 in Baldwin Park
  • Baskin Robins - Est. 1945 in Pasadena
  • Hot Dog on a Stick - Est. 1946 in Santa Monica
  • Jack in the Box - Est. 1951 in San Diego
  • IHOP - Est. 1958 in Burbank
  • Wienerschnitzel - Est. 1961 in Wilmington
  • Taco Bell - Est. 1962 in Downey
  • Del Taco - Est. 1964 in Yermo

Morrison also mentions other iconic chains like See's Candy which was founded in 1921 on Western Avenue in Los Angeles and Orange Julius which was founded in 1926 in downtown L.A. To read the full LA Times feature click here!
