John Legend gave one of his newest songs its live debut for the In Memoriam at the 2022 Emmy Awards on Monday, September 12th. The song "Pieces" off his latest album Legend proved to be the perfect song as the industry mourned performers and creators we lost over the past year.
"Wasn't it you who told me grief was a teacher/ And everything you ever loved with leave you/ Leave you alone?" Legend sings in the emotional song. "And the only thing you can do is pick up the pieces, let your broke heart learn, learn to live. Let your broken heart learn/ Learn to live/ In pieces/ Oh, we learn to live/ In pieces/ Hey, we learn to live."
As the singer crooned over his piano, photos of late stars appeared on the screen including Betty White, Bob Saget, Nichelle Nichols, Gilbert Gottfried, Ray Liotta, Sidney Poitier, and James Caan.
Nearly two weeks ago, Chadwick Boseman, who passed in August of 2020, received a posthumous award for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance at the 2022 Creative Arts Emmys. According to E! News, it was the late actor's first-ever Emmy award for his work as Star Lord T'Challa on an episode of the Disney+ Marvel animated series What If...?.
Other highlights from the 74th Emmy Awards included Sheryl Lee Ralph breaking out into a passionate song during her acceptance speech, Lizzo winning her first Emmy and getting halfway to EGOT status, Zendaya taking home her second Lead Actress award for Euphoria, and Selena Gomez's dazzling white dress while presenting alongside her Only Murders In The Building costars Steve Martin and Martin Short.
