Maren Morris debuted the short film based on her 11-track album, Humble Quest, on Friday (November 4). The award-winning singer-songwriter’s latest project is full of intimate conversations and reimagined performances of several of the songs included in the collection.
Morris delivered stunning performances of “The Furthest Thing,” “I Can’t Love You Anymore,” “Humble Quest,” “Background Music,” “Tall Guys,” “Good Friends,” and “What Would This World Do?” The final song, closing out the 30-minute film, is one that Morris admitted is an emotional experience for her. The song is dedicated to late producer, executive and songwriter known professionally as “Busbee,” who died in 2019. Morris shared in a Q&A with fans before premiering the short film on Friday that she “can’t really get through ‘What Would This World Do’ without falling apart, so this took a lot of strength for this.”
She added later, in a statement shared on her Instagram story to thank fans for their love for the short film and for the song: “It’s about the depths of grief and the humbling fact that the world will go on whether they’re here with us or not. I can’t sing it in my show, but it could exist here.”
Humble Quest: In Rare Form also includes performances of the title track and “Background Music” that realized a dream for Morris, who credited Nashville players with adding strings to the fan-favorite songs.
Humble Quest released in March, following months of anticipation for Morris’ next project. The era features some of her “happiest work,” including “Circles Around This Town,” “Background Music,” “Nervous,” “I Can’t Love You Anymore” and “Hummingbird,” and more. Morris explained when the album released:
“‘Humble’ began to feel more like a grounded state of understanding oneself; not so much by being relatable to or understood by all. What I also discovered is that the songs I was managing to compose during this time were the most authentic and light lyrics that have ever flowed from my pen. They weren’t fitting with the times, they were distracting and eventually saving me from the times.
“So, here are the stories of my rises, my overshares, my appreciation of Midwestern guys who stand at least a foot taller than me, my lullabies, my wine-soaked conversations with a dear friend and my final goodbye to one.”
“It means the world to me when people can hear themselves, and, you know, I love the way songs age, also,” Morris said as she closed her short film. “I think in 10 years, people are gonna remember how that song made them feel, and it’s a ‘bringer together,’ for sure.”
