Selena Gomez is reflecting on her past relationship with Justin Bieber, calling their split in 2018 the "best thing that ever happened" to her.
In her new documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, the Rare Beauty founder spoke about the end of her very public relationship with the "Peaches" singer, which inspired her to reach out to songwriters Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter to explore what she was feeling in song, per Entertainment Tonight. They ultimately penned her hit "Lose You to Love Me" in about 45 minutes, which Gomez said is "the fast song I've ever written."
"It's about more than a lost love. It's me learning to choose myself, to choose life, but also hoping that people can find grace and peace in that too," she said. "The song is about knowing that you completely lost every part of who you are just to rediscover yourself again."
While parting from a years-long partner, especially in front of the entire world who continue to speculate on their relationship, would make anyone sad, after some reflection, Gomez is calling it the "best thing" to have happened.
"I felt haunted by a past relationship that no one wanted to let go of. Then I just moved past it, and I wasn't afraid anymore," she said, adding, "I feel like I had to go through the worst possible heartbreak ever and then just forgetting everything at the drop of the hand, it was really confusing. But I just think that needed to happen and ultimately it was the best thing that ever happened to me."
Her new documentary doesn't shy away from difficult moments in Gomez' life, including a "psychotic break" she experienced in 2016 that left her feeling like she didn't want to be alive.
Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me is now available to stream on Apple TV+.
