A Florida wildlife photographer captured a stunning sight on camera: a great blue heron snatching a baby alligator from its angry mother.

Ted Roberts shared the jaw-dropping photo with WESH 2 on Monday (November 14), which was snapped at the Orlando Wetlands Park. Roberts told reporters he volunteers there and was giving a tour when he and his group started hearing "a commotion."

"While waiting to give a tram tour we heard a commotion and saw a Great Blue Heron jump out onto the road with a baby alligator in its mouth," he wrote in his submission. "Closely following the heron was the mother alligator futilely giving chase. The heron took flight as the mother alligator approached and this is one of the sequence of photos that I was able to take."

This wasn't the first time these huge birds went viral for gobbling up Florida's most infamous mascot. Back in 2020, a video of a heron swallowing a juvenile gator whole garnered thousands of views across the internet.

Great blue herons are known to "eat nearly anything within striking distance, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, insects, and other birds," according to the FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute.
