The NFL has moved Sunday's (November 20) game between the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills to Detroit's Ford Field amid an ongoing "weather emergency" in western New York, which forecasters have predicted could bring a "thundersnow."
"Due to public safety concerns and out of an abundance of caution in light of the ongoing weather emergency in western New York, Sunday's Cleveland Browns-Buffalo Bills game will be moved to Ford Field in Detroit at 1 p.m. ET, the NFL announced today," the Bills announced in a news release shared on their website Thursday (November 17).
"The decision to move the game from Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, NY was done in consultation with the Buffalo Bills and local and state authorities as the region prepares for the storm.
"Details on tickets and other game day information for Sunday's game in Detroit will be announced shortly. The Bills will provide information for those fans with tickets to the game originally scheduled for Orchard Park."
The Buffalo area is reportedly expected to "be hit with a lake-effect snowstorm" beginning Thursday night that could result in 4 to 6 feet of snow, according to The Weather Channel's forecast earlier in the day.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts "major to extreme impacts" in western New York and has advised all drivers to avoid traveling in the area.
A "thundersnow" takes place when a thunderstorm accumulates snow instead of rain and typically happens in the season when warmer air rises from the surface of Lake Erie, which was reported to be at about 52 degrees on Thursday, according to the New York Post.
“What we’re talking about is a major, major storm. This is considered an extreme event, an extreme weather event. That means it’s dangerous; it also means it’s life-threatening," New York Governor Kathy Hochul said during a press conference Thursday while advising all residents to stay home until 7:00 p.m. on Friday (November 18).
