A whole house floated across the San Francisco Bay on Sunday (April 7) in what residents who witnessed the event referred to as an "odd sight."

According to SF Gate, the home, pulled very slowly by a "much smaller boat," glided across the bay from the Docktown Marina in Redwood City to Sausalito. Despite its large size, Petty Officer Hunter Schnabel with Coast Guard Public Affairs revealed that the Coast Guard was not notified of the unusual expedition. The officer mentioned that it would have been "good best practice" to notify the Coast Guard in advance so that they could have "alerted other boats to give it plenty of space."

The Redwood City Marina, where the boat was traveling from, used to house hundreds of homes on the water. Due to new laws that "declared liveaboards illegal" only one house remains. Docktown residents, including the one that was seen floating across the San Francisco Bay towards Sausalito, were "awarded payouts for their relocation" amid lawsuits filed by homeowners in Redwood City.

Bill Price, the harbormaster at Waldo Point Harbor, informed SF Gate that the floating houseboat would dock near the Richardson Bay Bridge. Houseboats are not an uncommon sight in the Bay Area, but it is rare to see a home relocated across the sea instead of on land.
