There are 19,502 towns in the United States of America, according to Statista. Each of these unique places boasts their own charm, and personality to travelers who enjoy stepping off the beaten path to stop and smell the roses. While small towns are typically overlooked as places to adventure to, there are a select few that are the main attraction.

These places host an immeasurable amount of beauty that is not just appreciated by residents who are lucky enough to live there, but by all travelers alike! Travel & Leisure narrowed down the best small towns to plan a trip to with their list of the top 20 most beautiful small towns in America!

Per the list, the most beautiful small town in Illinois is Galena. Galena also raked as the 18th most beautiful small town in the country!

Here's what Travel & Leisure had to say about the most beautiful small town in the entire state:

"Galena, an approximately three-hour drive from Chicago, looks like a town straight out of a Hallmark Christmas movie. But it doesn’t have to be snowing and decked in white lights to be picturesque — Galena shines in any season. Historic Main Street, which dates back to the 1800s, has more than 125 independently owned shops, restaurants, inns, and bed-and-breakfasts. You won’t find chains or franchises here. Beyond town, biking and hiking trails with views of towering bluffs abound."
