Olivia Munn Reveals Another Major Surgery She Had Amid Cancer Diagnosis

Olivia Munn is opening up more about her cancer journey, revealing that she underwent another major surgery amid her diagnosis as well as how it impacted her future plans to expand her family.

In a new interview with Vogue, the Newsroom actress shared that she recently underwent a full hysterectomy and oophorectomy to remove her uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes after previously getting a double mastectomy following her breast cancer diagnosis in 2023, per Entertainment Tonight. The surgery removed her estrogen-producing organs as the Luminal B cancer she was diagnosed with grows in the presence of naturally occurring estrogen.

"It was a big decision to make, but it was the best decision for me because I needed to be present for my family," she said, per Page Six.

Munn also revealed that she briefly put off getting cancer treatment last year in order to retrieve and freeze her eggs in the hopes of expanding her family with her partner, John Mulaney, with whom she shares 2-year-old son Malcolm. Speaking to the magazine, she said she had previous experience with egg retrieval, undergoing the procedure twice before at ages 33 and 39, and decided to do another round before she started her cancer treatment.

"After my diagnosis, we decided to try one more round of egg retrievals and hoped it was a good month. John and I had talked about it a lot and we don't feel like we're done growing our family, but didn't know if I would have to do chemotherapy or radiation," she said.

During the final round, doctors were able to obtain seven eggs, but the issue of viability was still up in the air as Munn said her doctors told her that for her age range, around one in 10 eggs yield a healthy embryo. Fortunately for Munn and Mulaney, the pair learned that the procedure yielded not one but two viable embryos, giving her peace of mind during her health battle about the future of her family.

"John and I just started crying," she said. "It was just so exciting because not only did we get it in one retrieval, but it also meant that I didn't have to keep putting myself at risk. It was just amazing."

The X-Men: Apocalypse star revealed in March that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 and underwent treatment and several surgeries during her health battle, including a double mastectomy and subsequent reconstruction. She previously opened up about "one of the hardest things" she experienced during her cancer journey.
