We've seen drummers play along with a song while hearing it for the first time, but what about a full band? And not just any band—a jazz ensemble. Y Generation visited the Musora studios and listened to Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box" and then covered the In Utero hit on the spot. The band consists of a standup bassist, pianist, drummer, saxophonist and trumpet player, and the rendition is honestly PHENOMENAL!
“To be completely honest, it felt incredible,” drummer Ulysses Owens Jr. said after the performance. “I don’t get nervous often, especially in the company of my band… but I was nervous because you guys throw a lot of things at people conceptually. I was wondering, ‘I don’t know what they’re gonna do, but how does it fit in the context of what we do?'”
“We took an incredible song, an incredible band, an incredible concept, and we meshed it with who we already are,” he added.
This isn't the first time Owens has teamed up with this crew to tackle a Nirvana cover. The Juilliard instructor also partook in Drumeo's challenge and played along with the band's song "In Bloom" while listening to it for the first time. Watch Y Generation cover Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box" and watch Owens take on "In Bloom" below.
