Speaker 1 (00:01):
The volume. Okay, we just had a little playoff football.
One Harball brother is going home, the other is headed
(00:23):
to the second round where he's getting used to playing
a lot, and his team looks really, really good. The
Houston Texans take destroy work the Chargers as Justin Herbert
just throws interception after interception, and a game that I
think we all saw coming, the Baltimore Ravens beat the
Pittsburgh Steelers twenty eight to fourteen. But I promise you
(00:48):
it feels much worse than that. So we'll dive into
that game off the top. We will discuss a little
bit because everyone's like, middle Colf, what are you gonna
do defend Jim Harbaugh and Justin Herbert. So we'll talk
about it, guys. I bet on the Houston Texans, but
also reports that all signs lead to Mike Vrabel being
(01:08):
the next head coach of the New England Patriots, something
that I think we all saw coming the moment Robert
Kraft told Jirodmeo to clean out of shit. So we'll
talk about that as well. But uh yeah, I think
we need to start with with the loser in the
night game. And you hear this saying a lot, because
(01:28):
a lot of people use it to make a point,
and I think, listen, it's usually used pretty well. And
the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over
and over and expecting a different result. Like we have
seen now going on almost a decade, Mike Tomlin, even
if his quarterback situation is not great, is never gonna
(01:49):
bottom out. They're never gonna have a season where they
win two, three, four games. They're not gonna look like
the Titans. They're not gonna look like the Jacks. This
is also a historic America Can sports franchise that hung
their hat for a long time on not only winning championships,
but like legitimately competing for them. And early on in
(02:10):
Mike Tomman's career he did that he no longer does.
Last year he has played the second tier. The first
tier of the AFC is one team by themselves, the Chiefs.
They're clearly in a different universe than the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Then there's a second tier and it includes two teams
who are you know, I expect the Bills to win
(02:31):
tomorrow and you're going to see a great playoff game
between the Bills and the Ravens. Two teams that are
pretty damn good, that have Hall of Fame quarterbacks, that
are just trying to beat the Chiefs. They lost last
year by fourteen points to the Buffalo Bills, and they
just lost tonight by fourteen points. Both games, they never
had a chance to win tonight. They definitely did not.
(02:52):
And I've been saying over and over like saying Mike
Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers should break up is not
some indictment on either. It's just time it's ran its course,
because anyone that wants to defend him, it's like, well,
what about their quarterback situation, I didn't know the quarterback
played defense. The Baltimore Ravens ran the ball fifty times
(03:14):
the night. They ran for three hundred yards, and the
longest run of the night was forty four yards. So
even if you removed that that one rush, it's not
like Lamar had a seventy yard run and Derek Henry
had a sixty five yard run. They had a forty
four yard run. Subtrack that the longest run was twenty
yards for Lamar. They were gashing this team. Like. Part
(03:39):
of their success early on the season was a great defense,
was a physical defense. Alt Michaels and Kirk kurve Street rightfully.
So was like calling out their effort and heart. This
is their bitter rivalry. This once upon a time hashtag
never forget or I'm old enough to remember when this
is the best rivalry in all of sports. Kyle the
(04:01):
pros any sport, football, baseball, basketball, This was that it
no longer is. This is one sided and I don't
care about the regular season they play in the playoffs.
I'm taking the Ravens, and I'm taking the Ravens big.
They were basically a ten point favorite coming into this game,
and no one thought like taking the Pittsburgh Steelers was
a good idea, because clearly it was not a good idea.
(04:24):
They were down twenty one to nothing at halftime, just
getting clowned, getting gashed. Obviously, the Ravens are really good
on offense. It's one thing to give up some touchdowns.
It's another thing for them to not look like they're
even breaking a sweat. You never had a shot, and
that's the thing. Mike Tomlin like, Okay, your offense is
gonna have some issues. I get it. Your quarterback has
(04:44):
a washed Russell Wilson and a runner in justin fields
that you refuse to play. Okay, what about your defense?
You're a defensive guy, leader, tough guy. It's just not working.
And you saw tonight like who the tough team is,
and they shoved you around, they played with you. They
mess with you like a like a cat does with
a mouse. And when you look at Mike Tomlin, I
(05:05):
don't think it's crazy, like it's time And luckily for them,
his value is still really high because look at some
of these teams that need coaches. The Jags are a
fucking joke. They die for Mike Tomlin. The Jets are
even a bigger joke. They've interviewed seven hundred people. They
interviewed Mike Locksley, Mike Locksley, the coach of Maryland. Like
(05:28):
that's what they're doing the Bears. Can you imagine how
excited the Bears would be to have Mike Tomlin as
their head coach? But how many more years can you
just win? Oh? We went nine to eight and then
we got curb stomped in the first round as a
seven seed, and like him, still have the same value.
It's eventually going to get to a point of like
diminishing returns. So I think you have to entertain it.
(05:52):
And the other thing you have is a lot of stability,
a historic franchise, a winning franchise, So like, why not
take a swing at I don't know, Ben Johnson, take
us link for the fences. I'm all for loyalty. I
am pro loyalty, and I think what they have stood
for for decades is very commendable. But then it gets
to a point like, if you're a Steeler fan, what
(06:14):
are we doing? How can I keep watching this? I
would rather have a season where we win four or
five games the bottom out to then just to have
a chance to maybe to compete with the second tier
of the AFC, let alone the fucking Chiefs. This is
our rival. It's one thing. It's like last year you
lost the Bills, they got Josh Allen. We play you,
(06:35):
you know, potentially once every four years, right, depending if
we both win the division, which we don't do a lot,
you guys do. Maybe we play you back to back years.
But the Ravens are in a different universe than us.
This does feel a little bit like, you know, the Bengals,
if they played that season ten times, they probably have
(06:57):
a better record than you. Eight of them and going
into next year if they just don't have a terrible offseason.
I like the Bengals more than the Steelers. You got
to take advantage when the guys still has some value
instead of just writing this out, like are you guys
just gonna have a staring contest forever? And I've said
over and over I understand why Mike Tomlin likes being
(07:19):
the head coach of the Steelers. It's probably pretty badass,
but like, do you know what has to suck this
last month of the season playing every good team in
the NFL and getting your teeth kicked in and then
on Saturday night on Amazon Prime, which happens to be
one of the biggest companies in the history of the world,
(07:40):
with millions of people watching, everyone just making fun of
you at halftime, like, you guys, are you guys the
worst team in all of the playoffs? Is it? You guys?
Are you guys the worst team in terms of over
the next five years? The team I would want to
be if I'm Mike Tomlin, I want out because where
are we going? What are we going to do? We
(08:00):
took a swing on a first round quarterback a couple
of years ago that couldn't have got worse. We tried
to do this anytime, it's like, well we got our
quarterback room. It's really cheap, probably not a great idea,
or probably not an idea that's gonna have a fruitful outcome.
And honestly, tonight, like Russell hit three or four big plays,
a couple go balls in the second half, he wasn't
(08:22):
very good. Why because he's not that good and they
clearly think justin Field stinks and has no chance. And
maybe I would say, well, maybe it's a playoff game
against the Ravens. They were nervous. I just think I'd
you watch them down the stretch. They'd never put him
in the game, and you could go, well, what if
they would have started the second half of them, it
wouldn't have mattered. Let's be real. The game was over
(08:43):
at halftime, twenty one nothing. In the NFL against a
team like the Ravens, there's on the road you're never
gonna win. If I spot the Ravens a twenty one
nothing lead at home in a December January game, They're
gonna win ninety nine point nine percent of the time.
It's like the Rose Bowl with the Ohio State like
they had. That's the equivalent of the thirty four to
(09:04):
nothing in the lead in college, like the game was over.
The second half meant nothing. The only thing I was
looking for in the second half was like anyone on
the Ravens going to get injured going into next year?
And if I'm a Steeler fan, like i'd be tired
of watching this, Well, we have a coach he'd never lose. Great,
You're relevant once real games start being played in January,
(09:24):
and I just think it's time. And these teams are
so desperate, like could you get multiple second round picks?
Could you get a future one? Could you get like
a second this year in a one next year? Maybe not?
I don't know. But the longer this goes, you definitely
will not be able to because his star will dim
and dim and dim. But luckily these teams are so desperate,
(09:46):
the Jets, the Jags obviously, the Bears that you are
insane if you just don't broach the conversation with him,
And if I was them, like I'd want him to
because those teams would do anything to be nine to
ten wins back to back years. That would mean a lot.
To the Chicago Bears that would be everything to the
(10:08):
Jets to make the playoffs a couple of years in
a row as the seventh seed. Can you imagine what
they do to have that on their resume. This is
starting to be embarrassing for the Steelers, and like if
I was the Ravens, I was like, ah, this is
It was a lot easier playing the Steelers than it
would have been playing the Ravens because their offense stinks.
(10:31):
It's not any good. But here's the thing, Like, their
defense isn't very good, and Dereck Henry made them look
like a middle of the road team. If the season
would have started in December and gone for the next
three months, the Steelers would be like a five or
six win team because they are not very good right now.
And clearly the Ravens offense is pretty special and Lamar
(10:52):
is better than he's ever been. Derrick Henry to still
at this age with this wear and tear on his
tires and I listen. Obviously, the Steelers defense, I mean
the first a half didn't even look like they were trying.
But to be able to run for almost one hundred
and ninety yards in a playoff game, I think the
big difference between this offense this year than it was
(11:12):
last year, and they you know, Herbstreet was talking about
it on the broadcast about you know, I know Lamar
won the MVP, but he's dramatically better this year. It's
not even close. And I think part of it is
one Mark Andrews had the hip drop tackle last year
and wasn't around. He's a pretty special player. Mark Andrews
(11:34):
is a big time dude. Like Mark Andrews, every team
in the league would want Mark Andrews on their team.
Derek Henry's one of the greatest running backs we've ever seen.
That clip today on his touchdow on his long touchdown
run where there's like four guys behind him, all kind
of coming in on him, yet like four steps later
they're all behind him and he's running into the end zone.
(11:56):
And I would say that type run is what defines
his career. You're like, oh, this is gonna be a sweet,
like twenty five yard run. Then all of a sudden,
it's a fifty yard touchdown run. So you add Andrew's back.
Bateman has clearly improved over the last couple of years.
Right now, he's playing the best football of his life.
You add Henry. You add Lamar's ability. When Zay Flowers
(12:19):
is there, who's a pro bowler who obviously he didn't
play to night, but and the connection with with Todd
Munkin and with Lamar, you know, it's pretty special because
right now this offense, I have a hard time. We'll
have to see the Bills tomorrow. Like if I was
setting the line right now, assuming the Bills and say
win by ten or fifteen points, you have to wonder
(12:40):
if it's going to be a pick em in Buffalo.
Because this team, their defense also whatever tweak they made,
and it's been well documented how because early in the
season Kyle Hamilton was basically playing like he was Cam Chanceller,
like he was in the box, playing like another linebacker
their secondary who was getting gashed. They moved him back
more to play centerfield. Marlin just plays the slot. He's
(13:03):
a pro bowler. And their defense has really been excellent.
I mean, they gave up a couple of freak big
plays tonight. Who cares didn't matter. And I just think
that this team, I think where they got to be
kicking themselves is some of the early games that they blew.
I mean that Raider game, they blew a Browns game.
If I remember correctly that this home field advantage next
(13:26):
week is big. I mean, it really is, and it's
gonna be I mean, we'll see what the matchups are.
I mean, it's got a chance to be the best
game of the weekend, definitely on paper. But it's hard
to see this offense now, depending regardless whether they play
Saturday or Sunday. And I'm sorry, Broncos fans, I'm just
(13:47):
assuming you're gonna lose. Is the Ravens do get basically
like I don't know, fifteen sixteen hour head start just
to kind of rest and get some treatment in the morning.
But what a performance by the Ravens offense. I just marvel,
Like when Lamar makes these dramatic, just badass crazy plays
(14:10):
where he does a three sixty, he like goes up
in the pocket, goes back, scrambles around, throws a touchdown pass.
It's incredible to watch every time, but it kind of
expected to watch Derrick Henry at his age still do
what he's doing. Is and now when he gets rolling
like he does tonight, and then you have to pick
and choose him and Lamar on some of these some
(14:32):
of the schemes the Ravens run and then he keeps
it and Lamar goes for seven, or he hands it
off and Derek goes for eight. Like good for you.
I mean he averaged over seven yards of carry tonight.
You have Lamar averaging over five and you have Derek
averaging over seven. They ran the ball for fifty fifty carries.
I mean, that's that's back to the Steelers. It's one
(14:53):
thing to lose. It's sports. You're gonna lose games. Sometimes
you just take your hat off, you give the guy
a handshake, tip your hat and you say fuck part
the part of the world we're in. It's another thing
to have them run the ball fifty times for two
hundred and ninety nine yards. That's insane. In a playoff
game against your rival, they offered six yards of carry,
(15:17):
six yards a carry. Lamar only threw the ball twenty
one times. He was only sacked. What time? I And
this was what a game? And the sad part is
is this rivalry like when I I remember being in
college and then going to work for the Eagles, and
(15:38):
even after I got out in the mid teens into
the twenty teams, it was there just wasn't a better
game than this. It was like you didn't know who
was gonna win, but you knew a couple guys were
gonna get injured and it was just gonna be a
heavyweight fight. And now, going into this game to night,
even before the game kicked off, how many people believed
(15:59):
that the Psburgh Steelers had a snowballs chance? In hell?
How many people believe that of football fans, including Steeler fans,
a tiny, tiny percentage these games going in, you know,
Pittsburgh Ravens, it should be like, hey, man, anything could
happen in this matchup. This rivalry feels kind of irrelevant
(16:21):
because no one as long as Lamar Jackson's there is
going to give the Steelers any shot and Tomlin's defensive
leader and they just get gashed. I mean, what the
fuck was that? Man? I was tempted to go big
on the Ravens, but I was like, you know, it
feels like everyone's picking them this. Maybe the Steelers end
(16:43):
up losing by like seven, and no, they lose by fourteen,
and it felt more like forty. So congrats to the Steelers.
And yeah, I mean the Ravens, excuse me, and the
Steelers man. I feel for you fans because it just
it's just like spinning your wheels, same thing over and over.

Speaker 1 (18:43):
The Other Game first and foremost. I picked the Texans.
People think I'm a hardball homer. I am. People think
I'm a Justin Herbert Homer. I am. Now I can
also acknowledge when I call Justin Herbert a big time
top five quarterback. I put him in the fifth slot, right.
I don't put him ahead of Mahomes, don't put him
(19:05):
ahead of Lamar, don't put him ahead of Josh Allen.
I don't put him ahead of Joe Burrow. But you
can start listening to other guys. I would take Justin
Herbert over him. He had an awful game. He had
a real bad game. One of the picks was off
Disley's hands, but the other ones were just air mails.
He was terrible. There's no disputing that he threw a
pick six. He threw a couple of picks and Stingley.
(19:27):
It was really bad. But this team and same thing
with Jim Harball. He had a bad game. We talked,
Me and Stucky talked about this. These matchups. Sometimes you
get big discrepancies in a matchup, like the coaching the
night Todd Munkin and his offense against Austin and Tomlin
on defense. That's a mismatch right now in twenty twenty five,
(19:51):
Demiko and Harball. Like I think Harball is one of
the best coaches in the NFL. I also think Demiko
is as well. If you had a coach dra from scratch,
Demiko would go really freaking high. So this notion coming
into the game, because the Texans hadn't looked that good
down the stretch, they were at some big disadvantage. It's
(20:11):
the reason when I had Stucky on we picked the Texans.
They were being undervalued in this game. But act like
the Chargers. Someone's like, you're gonna be hard on Tomlin.
Give me the same energy on harball. You mean the
team that won five games last year five games last year,
had one of the worst defenses in the league, and
at the number one scoring defense in the NFL this year. Now,
(20:34):
granted their schedule played out pretty well in their favor,
but still they went for five wins to the five
seed and got beat by a team who also won
a playoff game last year. And like I like CJ
Strad a lot. I view him as a top ten
quarterback who had a bad year. And today, going into
that half, at going into halftime, that final drive, he
(20:55):
finally made a play and then he made a couple
other plays and then they scored a touchdown. He's like,
that is a c stra we haven't seen a while.
And then the second half he was awesome. And I
saw a postgame video of Demiko in the locker room,
who was fired up for him. Rightfully, So, because CJ.
Stroud was a badass, he's at a bad year. He
was really good tonight because he's a good player. You
could have bad seasons, you could have a bad game.
(21:17):
Justin Herbert had an awful game. But if you're gonna
sell Charger stock right now, I will take all of it.
I've said this about the Chargers and the Broncos. This
is the shittiest version of their teams that they're gonna
be moving forward by far. The Charger's best wide receiver
is a second round slot receiver. That's their best wide receiver.
(21:41):
They depend on JK. Dobbins to be like Walter Payton.
The Houston Texans are really good upfront on defense, and tonight,
you know, Joe all got smoked a couple times. You
know why Danelle Hunter got two years, fifty million dollars.
You know how many of those dollars were guaranteed, all
of them, every fucking penny. Why, he's a badass. That's
(22:04):
a pass rusher. You know there are other pass rusher
You know where he went third overall in the draft,
Will Anderson, you know where he came from, Alabama? All
American badass. Those guys gave the Chargers a lot of
issues tonight. They're good, They're really damn good. They're probably
one of the best pass rushing duos in all of
the NFL. This notion that the Chargers got their ass
(22:26):
kicked by like the Jaguars or the Titans to night,
like put down the crack pipe the Texans have a
lot of really good players. It's why most of us
I had money on them to be the number one
overall seed. It clearly didn't go that way, but part
of it was like, what's going on now? Their offensive
line is not great, it's not very good, and their
offensive coordinator sometimes can get out of rhythm. There were
(22:49):
times tonight in that first half where I was like,
Bobby Slowick, does Dimico need to send you back to PFF.
That's where he worked before Kyle Shanahan hired him, And
it was looking like, God, this guy I might head
back to PFF because his play calling could just be
pretty erratic, and maybe he'd tell you, like, listen, I
try to run the ball and it does not work.
He's kind of right now. It did toward the end
(23:10):
of the game. But they kicked their ass. They did
the same thing to the Browns last year. Like they
kicked their ass. They've won back to back playoff games
in the wildcard round. Like this isn't some random team.
There's a team with a ton of talent. Nico Collins,
big time player, could play for my team, could play
for the Ravens, could play for the Steelers, could play
(23:30):
for the Chiefs, could play for the Bills, He'd start
for all the teams. He's a baller. So yeah, the
Chargers got worked. They also are a year removed from
being the laughing stock of the NFL. And Jim Harball,
like he does everywhere he goes, immediately changed them and
like trying to compare like well, him and Tomblin both
(23:51):
got their asking. Jim Harbaugh hadn't coached in the NFL
for eight seasons, and over the last twelve he has
more playoff victories than Mike Tomlin. If we have like
a draft from scratch, all the gms got one, Jim
Harbaugh would go in the top five. I promise you
that he might go three or four. Demiko would go
(24:14):
really high too. These are big time coaches, and one
of them kicked the other ones ass, especially in the
second half, and part of it was Herbert melted down.
Herbert did not play well. And if you want to
argue with me that something's missing, I had a scouting
buddy tonight text me like someone feels a little missing
from and I was like, yeah, tonight was not the
night to argue for him, but relative to the rest
(24:35):
of the league, you pick a couple guys that are
no brainers. You could have a lot of other players.
I'll take Justin Herbert over all of them, and listen tonight.
Not great, not good. The Texans defense is good. Derek Stingley,
as the broadcast said, he's the best corner in the
NFL right now. Dude's a baller freak show. Remember when
(24:58):
they picked him over Sauce Gardner and people, what are
they doing right? Pick good move Casarrio and listen. Casario
hired David Kelly and Lovey Smith head scratching, not sure
what they were doing there, but hiring Demiko Ryans Like,
that's a big time move. Tomiko's a stud. So the Texans,
(25:23):
I don't know. That second half feels like the best
second half they've played in a month. It's the best
football they've played for a long time. That's the best CJ.
Stroud has looked. It feels like in months. And sometimes
you just need a couple of big plays, get a
deep breath and just you know, Cgo was running around.
He just kind of put the team on his back.
And so like he's a fourth round pick. The guy
(25:44):
was the number two overall pick in the NFL Draft.
You know what I mean. They just say people saw
this coming. He had one of the greatest rookie season.
I think, statistically the best rookie season in the history
of the league last year. So it just disappeared on
us for a while and it came back. So congrats
to Demico Ryans can. Congrats to the Houston Texans. They're
not an easy team to play, and I know they
(26:06):
just beat the shit or opposite the Chiefs did to
the Texans. Like I in theory, it should be a
somewhat difficult matchup if that's the game, because they got
two really good pass rushers, right, they got two really
good pass rushers. They can just disrupt stuff against the Chiefs.
I would take the Chiefs in that game. But like
(26:27):
you know, we've seen this before when a team plays
another team late in the season and gets killed, and
they play again in the playoffs, and everyone just thinks
it's gonna be you know, two point zero version of that,
and then it plays out a little differently like they got.
I just think we underestimate sometimes some of these teams,
and I also think we forget too quickly, like the
Chargers didn't win eleven games two years ago, they ran
(26:51):
Brandon Staley out of town. You know, in early December,
they won five games, They drafted fifth overall and their
fifth overall pick. Tonight, I thought had a little trouble.
I mean, welcome to the NFL. Kid, Get in the
gym this offseason. We need to be better. We want
to win some playoff games next year. We need you
to be better because that wasn't good enough, and in
(27:11):
the playoffs you're playing the best of the best. The
other coaching news, it was pretty clear that this was
(27:32):
inevitable that when the Patriots finished their season, the girod
Mail was fired before he even left the stadium that night,
and they had a press release put out what felt
like five minutes into the game, hitting double zero on
the clock. And you don't write that press release directly
(27:53):
after the game. To me, that press release was probably
written during the week. A ton of articles have been
written about Mayo and the failings. You could argue they
knew they were going to fire him a month ago,
and clearly the moment Mike Vrabel interviewed with the Jets
that I would say put a little gasoline on the
(28:14):
fire of and created some urgency in the building. But
the moment he was fired, everyone knew that they wanted
to hire Mike Frabel, and everyone knew that Mike Vrabel
wanted to go work there. Two years ago, his last
year in Tennessee, he went there on his off week
to get inducted into the Ring of Honor and become
a Patriot Hall of Famer. And his reverence for Robert
(28:38):
Kraft and the family and that organization is well documented.
And if you're Mike Frabel, like one thing is aged
pretty well. The Titans are kind of a joke. I
texted a buddy in the NFL. I'm like, it's kind
of crazy that ran Carthon won the power struggle with
Frabel and then got fired for a year later. He's like,
(29:00):
I don't know if there was necessarily a power struggle.
The owner just was tired of Rabel. And then the
owner clearly just got tired of this guy. She has
no clue what she's doing, and Mike Rabel does. But
do you know what hiring him does to the Patriots?
Like the bills are good, and the bills are going
to be good for the foreseeable future. Why they have
one of the best quarterbacks in the league, and they
(29:22):
have a coach that knows what they're doing, in an
organization that knows what they're doing. It's why they've won
the division five times and they'll be favored to win
it again next year. You know who should be nervous though,
right now the Miami Dolphins, who can't even get guys
to show up to meetings on time. As Mike McDaniel said,
(29:43):
finding people doesn't even work around here. I find people
and no one cares. We'll think who he's talking about,
because if you make nine hundred grand, you're not going
to show up to meetings late consistently. When the fines
are five ten thousand dollars, it's too big of a
percentage of your income. Plus, when you don't make that
(30:04):
much money, you're not on scholarship. You can get cut
at any moment. So who are guys who can afford
to get fined five ten, fifteen thousand dollars. Obviously it's
the star players. So you just have to look at
the guys making a lot of money on the team.
Obviously it's well documented the guy's probably showing up late.
(30:25):
The best players on the team. That team is fucked
because I've said over and over that if you respect
another human being, whether it's your father, whether it's especially
as another man man demand, whether it's my boss, whether
it's my dad, whether it's my business partner, whether it's
a potential client, you do not show up late to things.
(30:49):
You prioritize what you care about. It's why people don't
show up late to Andy Reid's meetings. People don't show
up late to Nick Saban's meetings, people don't show up
late to Sean mcvay's meetings. Yes, we all have an
issue where we get a flat tire or getting a
car accident on an individual basis, But when a coach
(31:10):
says over and over this keeps happening, there's nothing I
can do about it, that becomes a reflection on you.
We've seen the Miami Dolphins, he ain't in. The Jets,
don't have a coach, and that organization has the longest
streak of not making the playoffs in all of professional sports.
So if I was the Miami Dolphins, and if I
(31:31):
was the New York Jets, who have interviewed seven million
people so far, that's not ideal. So if I'm a
Dolphins fan or a Jets fan, Mike Vrabel coming in
the division is not good because the Bills already kicked
the crap out of us. Now the Patriots are gonna
have a pulse. I mean, look what he did with
the Titans with Ryan Tannehill, Derrick Henry, AJ Brown and
(31:54):
a lot of random dws and most importantly like Ryan Tannehill,
who at his best was like the thirteenth best quarterback
in the NFL, and they won a lot of games
with him, probably closer to like fifteen to eighteen range.
And now he has Drake May, which a lot of
unknown to me, Drake May and Caleb Williams are the
(32:15):
same guy. We have absolutely no clue how good they are.
But I know that Mike Rabel knows how to maximize
a guy with less talent than Drake May, and knows
how to motivate and get toughness out of his team
and get a focus group. Because you know what happens
under Mike Vrabel, Guys don't show up late. Mike Vrabel
(32:36):
would never complain after a season that fines didn't work.
That would never be tolerated. Why because if you play
for Mike Vrabel, you're gonna respect Mike Vrabel, as you
would any coach worth their salt who's any good at
his job, because if I don't respect you as a coach,
there's no point in keeping you. Same thing with Shane Steiken,
he said the same thing. So the AFC East, which
(33:02):
is going to continue to go through Buffalo, the Patriots
are gonna be good. Maybe not next year. I don't
know if it's gonna go from five to the five
seed like Jim Harbad just did, but they are going
to be a credible franchise much much faster than you think.
So Robert Kraft when he fired Rod Mail, he clearly
did it for a reason. He didn't go into this blind.
(33:24):
And the other story that's floating around out there right
now is that Ben Johnson and the Raiders because of
Tom Brady's involvement in this whole thing, which clearly that
is why I gave Mark Davis credit for involving Tom Brady.
He needed to add some credibility. But this also has
to be the angle of like all these owners being
weird about Tom Brady coming into their building in terms
(33:47):
of him working for Fox, and now it's pretty clear
that he runs the Raiders like there's just a lot
going on. I mean, there really really is. I mean
I saw one story I don't know if it probably
was not credible that that Tom told Belichick that if
he would come to the Raiders that he would come
out of retirement. And I think it's been pretty well
documented that Tom called Bill Belichick not to try to
(34:09):
hire Bill Belichick, but just to ask him for advice.
Like if Mark Davis goes to Tom Brady like, hey, Tom,
could you run point on this? And Tom's like, hell, yeah,
I run point on this. I'm like the fucking pseudo
owner here. I would do it. Well, Tom Brady's never
done this before, even if he knows a lot of
football and understand what to look for. If you were
(34:30):
Tom Brady, who would be the first person you would
call to ask for advice? What should I look for?
Who should I talk to? What are the key attributes?
He'd called Bill Belichick Like, it's put yourself in that situation.
If you had been whatever industry you were in, had
worked with one of the most accomplished individuals in the
(34:50):
history of that industry, and then you got put into
a position several years later, wouldn't and that guy was
still alive, still working somewhat in the business. Wouldn't you
call and pick his brain and ask him for advice.
It made a lot of sense. So I think the Raiders,
I would imagine they're trying to make a big pitch,
(35:11):
you know, for Ben Johnson, who And this is where
having the buye really really benefits the Lions because their
two coaches are in such high demand, Ben Johnson and
Aaron Glenn, And I saw a clip from Dan Campbell's
press conference or early in the season. They basically or
earlier in this week, and they asked them, like what
the game plan was this week, and he basically said, like,
(35:33):
I'm gonna take a couple of days and just go
hang out with my family. And that's the best part
about getting the number one seat. You can kind of
take a deep breath, you know, you could have some beers,
you can hang out with your wife and kids, you
can go to dinner, your players can get some treatment
and just get out their feet and your assistance when
they're in high demand, don't have to force a game
plan while they're trying to interview. Because obviously Aaron Glenn
(35:57):
wants to become a head coach as he should because
and I heard someone talking about this and they were
right that being a defensive guy, there are no guarantees.
You gotta strike when the iron's hot. It's if Ben
Johnson did turn everyone down this year, the Lions are
gonna be excellent again on offense next year and he's
still gonna be in high demand. But if Aaron Glenn
(36:18):
gets the opportunity with the Jets, with the Saints, with
the Jags, the Bears, whoever, he has to take the
job because he's fighting an uphill battle on that side
of the ball, and just the defensive side of the
ball can just be very, very fickle in general, and
teams are just more inclined to higher offensive guys. They
just are as they should be because the quarterbacks the
most important guy. But if you're Dan Campbell, you don't
(36:40):
have to worry like you don't even know who you're
playing it and there's a decent chance the team you're playing.
You know, if Minnesota beats the Rams comes out of
the Monday night game, who you just played him anyway,
So that's be the easiest opponent possible because you literally
just game plan for him. So I think this is
why that game was so big. It was big for
the Chiefs, But if the Chiefs hadn't got the number
(37:01):
one seed, even though they had it now for a
couple of weeks, wouldn't have been the end of the world.
We saw it last year they went on a run
for the Lions. They really really needed it, not just
for their players, but because of the prep and the
time off for their coaches and the ability for those
guys to interview without any pressure to try to force
a game plan in what would have felt like one
of the great failures of all time. If all of
(37:23):
a sudden, the Lions would have been bounced in the
first round. So I still go back to that Lions
win on Sunday night. Football Week eighteen feels like one
of the cooler games in a long, long time. Okay,
have a great night, have a good morning whenever you
listen to this, and let's enjoy some football on Sunday
and I will see you Sunday afternoon with Colin and
then Sunday night with myself. I think that's the game
(37:46):
plan right now. So football, football and then some more football.
