Speaker 1 (00:28):
Hello, Welcome in Side hour two The Jason Smith Show
with my best.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
Friend Mike Harmon.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
Much us hobo live from the Tirack dot Com studios
tirac dot com. I hope you get there, an unmatched selection, fast,
free shipping, free road hazard protection, and over ten thousand
recommended installers. Tiraq dot com is the way tire buying
should be. Two big college football games going on right now,
Oregon Dylan Gabriel up over Michigan State twenty one to

(00:55):
nothing at f time. Meanwhile, UNLV and Syracuse hope you
like points twenty one seventeen UNLV with the lead Syracuse
and Kyle McCord down on the six yard line of
UNLV on the doorstep from a cord. So far two
hundred and thirteen yards and a touchdown, and again we
are early in the third quarter. How about the rest

(01:16):
of this big weekend in college football? Joining us now
in the hotline? Nobody better than a longtime front of
the show. The owner, editor, proprietor grand puba of College
Footballnews dot com. You're one stop shopping for college football news, evaluations, predictions, prognostications.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
It is Pete fu tech. Pete. What's happening? Buddy?

Speaker 4 (01:37):
What's going on? Joman? Are you guys watching this Oregon game?
I'm sure you're locked into Syracuse, but are you are
you watching this Michigan State game? Because it's it sounds
like twenty one nothing? But kind does it feel like
twenty one nothing? It's like Michigan State keeps screwing this
up and I'm not buying this Oregon thing as much

(01:58):
as the rest of the world is. Which foreshadowing to
next week, because let's just say this week a little
wanting in big games. Ohio State, I think to come
in and truck him, But yeah, hey, twenty one nothing.
It's a Michigan State team that's pretty good, and your
Syraccuth Orange will be fine eventually, UNLB will wake up
and realizes, UNLB, and I'll be okay.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
Well, I was.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Hoping you could do me a favorite peat because I
know you have a lot of people you can reach
out to in college football. Can you get Kyle McCord
another year of eligibility because after tonight the whole college
football world's going to see just how good he is.
He has been phenomenal the first month of the season.
He is strong, he's smart, he's smooth, he's always in control.
You play on national TV, things happen. But I need

(02:41):
another year, like this can't be the last. Can you
call somebody and get another.

Speaker 3 (02:44):
Year for him?

Speaker 4 (02:46):
Does Fran Brown have any other like you know guys
that he's known since you know five? Isn't that the
story that somehow run knew Kyle mccorley coached his like
little hots team or something and that's how the relationship
started there? But good, I mean, he he's there's the
old House State quarterback. I mean, he got unfairly blamed
last year because he's not TJ Stroud, But who is

(03:08):
you know? Because the Ohio State offense went from bombing
away on everybody two years ago to just kind of
being okay, and look, you know, like as i've you know,
you guys know anybody else that said this before they
were there. They were an undefeated team, they had the
puck on their stuff with a chance to beat Michigan
late Macortho's at late pick and he had I was
not Michigan and the Macortho's a late pick, and you

(03:29):
know that's it. But he's good. He's a very very
good quarterback. You don't start at at Ohio State if
you don't know what you're doing. And he's good. But
all right, now go beat UNLV.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
You know the stats and.

Speaker 4 (03:42):
It's everyone kind of assumed that UNLV, like, oh, this
is interesting and fun. They've never gone five and o
before in the history of this program. It's an awful,
awful football program that all of a sudden, next head coach,
next Florida head coach, Barry Odam is going doing great
things with.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Are you going to say everybody is next Florida head coach?
You know, I.

Speaker 4 (04:06):
Could not, I could not hit a very Billy Napier's
agent should still still owes me a balloon bouquet. For
as much as I kept pumping that guy up like
he was going to be done. Next big thing. You
just you never know. I mean, you get into a
great situation. Look, Scott Frost was great at US. Of
course it was a perfect situation to go back to

(04:27):
z Alma, Moderate Nebraska. You know, it just it just
you never know how these coaching things work. But certainly,
again what Billy Barry Odam is doing in this thing
is nothing short of miraculous, because again, the history of
UNLV is littered with two and eight teams. It's just
it's a bad program for football. And this is the

(04:48):
best era of UNLV football ever over the last year
and a half so far. So to be to be
merely competitive in a game like this is pretty strong
for this program.

Speaker 5 (04:59):
Good times all around on a Friday night. There's no
question about only one top twenty five game this week.
Pete Missouri number nine heading to A and M and
they're a two and a half point dog. I don't
know that it's moving the needle. Everybody's looking ahead to
next week or any.

Speaker 4 (05:15):
Yeah, it's it's not, but it is a big one
because now you know, look at Texas A and M's
schedule going forward. If it beats Missouri, it's kind of
got I don't want to. They's smoothed Salings. It's the SEC,
but it's got it pretty easy up until the end
of the season. And that Texas games in College Station.
So that was kind of the thing about that opener

(05:37):
against Notre Dame wher. You know, you look ahead at
that schedule and someone's gotta, you know, miss somebody in
this whole expansion world. When everyone's like, oh gosh, we
got Texas and Oklahoma or going to the SEC, and
you know Oregon and usc is, you know, Washington going
to the Big tim Well, not everyone has to play
those teams in an eight or nine game conference schedule.
And it just so happens that this year Texas A

(05:59):
and M missus Al Obama, Georgia, Tennessee. You know, they
miss all the big guns. And so if they can
pull this off against mis Zoo, they're just gonna kind
of keep on hanging around. All of a sudden, We're
gonna be in November, like, wait a minute, Texas A
and M nine to one. Okay, but they got to
pull this one off first, and I think they will.
I think I'm not sold on Miszoo. I haven't told

(06:21):
on them last year they really beat anybody great. They
lost the two games they had to win they didn't
and so far this year should have lost to Boston
College has been sort of mess so far. But you know,
let's see, because Texas A and M should have the
makeup to pull this off. But this is for being
a you know, kind of a low level talk ranking

(06:43):
game of cops sway five teams, it should actually be
pretty good.

Speaker 5 (06:46):
Yeah, the Aggies only have LSU is the only other
ranked team. Hey, and if you wanted to on the
nineteenth you go see I'm at Mississippi State for the
price cup of coffee.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Wow.

Speaker 4 (06:58):
Of course that's right after I took over the Mississippi
State said on the side. But yeah, don't fluse to
Toledo by a million. But yeah, it's again, everyone's got
to play someone. Someone's got to play Mississippi State. Someone
has to play. Uh, you know, the South Carolina is
in Kentucky's in the world, which are just okay compared

(07:19):
to the you know, the Bamas and Georgia's. But uh,
look again, you gotta you gotta pull off these wins
because as we saw, you know, last week, Kentucky is
able to beat old miss you know, it's the SCC.
Things can rise up and happen at anytime.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
So college football insider Pete fu Tech with us, the
Jason smithser with Mike carbon Lodge and the tirec dot
com studios. All right, so tomorrow we kind of get
the college football version of the old like Big East
ACC challenge, right because you have former PAC twelve schools
playing all the Big Ten schools and ACC schools playing
the PAC twelve schools. So let me ask you this,
because it's all gonna come down to at the end

(07:53):
with the twelve playoff spots, Hey, what conference is going
to get three?

Speaker 3 (07:56):
What conference could get for? Which conference? Right now? Is
in you the most?

Speaker 4 (08:01):
Uh impressing the most? Overall? It's yeah, I guess you
have to kind of say the Big Ten has been
pretty good so far, but uh, you know, the SEC
at the top has been been strong, but the mid
level is a little bit wanting. So I don't think
any set up, but certainly the ECC is not the
ACC is. I'm not impressed by Miami. Uh, Clemson's was great,

(08:24):
but they got hosed by Georgia to start the season,
So uh this the ACC is just okay. Case, Florida
stay off. Remember tomorrow is supposed to be Clemson Florida
State Day. That was the post. That was the big
night game. It's the big prime time matchup, and and
obviously that's not happening. So that's that's kind of why
this week kind of thinks. But the ACC is not it. Uh,

(08:47):
the Big quote fine, but you know what I mean
in Utah Arizona at the top not great, you know,
so it's just an okay conference. So obviously is what
we're gonna have to you know, special the rest of
our lives. Basically, the SEC and BIG are actually the
best sou but they're gonna get all the teams in
and they're making deals and make sure they get everybody
into even more teams than in the future. Uh So
I would have to one with rambling way of kind

(09:10):
of saying, I'm gonna say the SEC right now just
because they are so loaded the top heavy in that comp.

Speaker 5 (09:15):
Now, you brought up Miami last week. We rode the
roller coaster while you were alive on air, the good,
the bad, the overturn, all that fun stuff. Uh, do
they go on the road to cal and lose with
Marshawn Lynch riding around in a cart and doing wheelies.

Speaker 4 (09:29):
Yeah, I'm actually kind of buying into the idea that
the plane rids matter. I just, you know, I mock
into all blue big deal. You got a plane, you
put on your headphones, you watch John Wick three times
and you're there.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
Yeah buddy, yeah, buddy.

Speaker 4 (09:44):
That's not that I've done that or anything. But look,
you know, these are these are long trims for these guys,
and you know, the Circadian rhythm and all that kind
of stuff where you could try to figure out all
all you want, but you know, for these guys like
my they're gonna be playing at like two in the morning,
you know their time, you know. So, uh, these things

(10:05):
actually kind of matter a little bit. Between Miami and
Cal and between Stanford, who I think might have a
real shot to beat Virginia Tech, I think there are
I think at least one of those two Bay Area
teams is gonna pull it off. I just don't buy Miami.
I just they're gonna be one of those that's another
one exactly.

Speaker 1 (10:25):
Like Texas A.

Speaker 4 (10:25):
And if if they beat Cal tomorrow, who do they
play the rest of the way, Nobody. They don't have
notre name on the slate this year, Florida State's obviously
met and they don't get to play Clemson, So there's
really nothing else there the rest of the way, as
long as they don't, you know, face plant in a
game like this.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
All right, First, all I hear you, because we flew back,
flying back from England to LA this summer.

Speaker 3 (10:49):
We stopped over New York. I watched Top Gun Maverick twice.

Speaker 1 (10:53):
On the plant from New York to l I watched
it started again, watch all right, got it?

Speaker 3 (10:57):
Two more versions of it.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
Lastly, let me ask you this, if you had to say, hey,
if I had to say, what big upset could we
be talking about?

Speaker 3 (11:06):
After tomorrow?

Speaker 1 (11:06):
We got to get the big acc Big ten, big
big Challenge, Day one one big upset tomorrow?

Speaker 3 (11:12):
Which one you what are you gonna give me?

Speaker 4 (11:13):
I'm saying I'm staying with it. I'm going with out
of the two, I guess cal would be bigger over Miami.
I'm saying Stanford Virginia Tech just doesn't have the player
to make it. When Stanford's one of those teams that
they're not very good, but they hang around, hang around,
hang around. Uh and then all of a sudden playoffs,
and I hate to say because it's actually not an upset,
but I don't know how it's not an upset. I

(11:34):
think Washington finally gets it together and gets it done
against Michigan. They've been close to being okay, but Wow,
if Michigan kid doesn't find a passing game right away,
that's gonna be a problem because unlike last year, you
might have gone to the National Championship, but Washington has
a better defense this time run under Jet Fish.

Speaker 1 (11:55):
Well, let me just real quick on that, Pepe, because
this is something Mike and I have talked about a lot.
Michigan's a big obviously of what we've seen from them
so far this season.

Speaker 3 (12:03):
How are you not ready for the post?

Speaker 1 (12:06):
JJ McCarthy era, I don't I don't understand, right, I
don't get how you're not ready. Hey, here's our next
five star guy and he's ready to go. I get
the Jayden.

Speaker 3 (12:14):
Davis came in. He was good, but really he's not
good enough to start. He's not.

Speaker 1 (12:17):
I mean, you're you're stuck with a guy who's a
walk on and a guy who's been a seventh year
senior and a gadget guy who is starting right now?
How is this where Michigan's at of quarterback?

Speaker 4 (12:26):
Oh, I don't know. Somebody I might be talking to
at the moment might not have pointed up enough. And
I held money to help out because.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
I mean, I don't know, I was amazing.

Speaker 4 (12:38):
Ohio State apparently cares more about these things with their
twenty million dollars collective or whatever it is they've got. No,
I'm with you because I think they thought Worgi was
actually going to be better than this. And uh, I
guess if you're Michigan, it's easy to just say run
the ball, run the ball, ball in the ball, the line,
your defense, don't screw up the passing game. But it's
also limiting him because there's a ton orgy. Just don't

(13:00):
screw this thing up and he's not. But that might
be just enough to get them beat. But you're right,
I don't know how a lot of these teams don't
have not have a star. You know what Indians got
Curtis work out of Ohio. How much would you love
to have that guy right now?

Speaker 5 (13:14):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (13:14):
And that's Indiana, you know, So you think that these
be a little bit better at the talent evaluation aspect.

Speaker 5 (13:20):
Of this way to get that Indiana reference in as
they take on Northwestern tomorrow. But the Michigan thing, Pete,
I've just theorized, there's a hell of a lot of
negative recruiting of you guys are getting the death penalty.

Speaker 3 (13:31):
It's all going to hell. Why why would you want
to go there?

Speaker 4 (13:34):
Yeah, because that's what nil money is for. Because what
if these guys carry you. I'm caring what the death
toll you're gonna give me? You know that Matt Sluca
money one hundred grand to get there? Out that dealt
too soon.

Speaker 1 (13:47):
He's on Twitter at pach tech. That is ad pech Tech.
Check out college Footballnews dot com. You're one stop shopping
for everything college football. All the predictions, all the analysis
are there for you. Pete his own buddy. Appreciate it, man,
we'll talk to you next week.

Speaker 3 (14:02):
Enjoy the games. That's good. So now I get to
tell Pam, Hey, it's your fault Michigan though quarterback. Yeah No,
Peter feu Tech said it was your foot.

Speaker 1 (14:09):
You didn't give enough money for an eye enough that
that's all your fault, Pam.

Speaker 3 (14:13):
You didn't join the Friends of whatever. What do you mean,
it's my fault. I don't know. He just told me
it was your fault.

Speaker 1 (14:19):
All right, figure it OUTA wait a minute. Your money's
my money, so hang on a second. You specifically, Pam
it wasn't me. I'm not the Michigan alum. You rite
the checks. I love this day in college football tomorrow
because it does it has that sense of the you
know when the Big the Big Ten, ACC Challenge or

(14:43):
the Pac twelve big because you have all these teams
who have jumped into the Big ten now, but they
all still feel like Pac twelve teams. What you got
Michigan and Washington are gonna play and U. C. L
a Is gonna play Penn State, and that's kind of fun,
and and you want to go down late in the
day you mentioned Miami and Cal is gonna play USC Minnesota.

Speaker 3 (15:02):
Like this is fun.

Speaker 1 (15:03):
It's like, hey, we're gonna see is a Pac twell
still really good enough from last year?

Speaker 3 (15:07):
Like I kind I kind of like this, dad. I
think it's pretty cool.

Speaker 5 (15:09):
I think there's a lot of fun matchups and a
lot of potential chaos and a lot of potential blowouts.
Like that's the other part of this, Like you look
at some of the lines you talk about U c
l A at Penn State.

Speaker 3 (15:21):
Man, that's just not pretty.

Speaker 6 (15:22):
Man.

Speaker 5 (15:22):
That's a game on Fox. So you should watch the
obliteration that that's the big nude kickoff, right, not the
big nude kickoff. But you want to you want to
talk about a dude who Yeah, I'm gonna take this
job at UCLA, Eric p Enemy.

Speaker 3 (15:36):
How's that working out?

Speaker 5 (15:37):
I'm saying, Hey, I should be in charge of something huge.

Speaker 1 (16:43):
The Jason Smith Show with My best friend Mike Harmon
Livethetirack dot Com Studios. Two top twenty five games in
college football. Oregon leeds Michigan State twenty four to nothing
midway through the third quarter. Meanwhile Syracuse and UNLV Syracuse
on top of the run, rebels thirty one to twenty four.

(17:04):
Syricuse gets in the end zone twice after a turnover
they have the football back again. I don't think we're
gonna see a lot of defense over the course of
the last quarter and a half of this game. Mike,
come to every game, every game. Every down at UNLV
has the ball, they gained ten yards and every two
or three plays Kyle McCord throws for twenty So not
a lot of defense I think left in this game.

Speaker 5 (17:25):
You're hoping for just tip balls or just a fumble.
You know, yeah, hey, you dropped it. That's kind of
where we're at in this process. I checked at halftime
and the over under was sixty five and it was
getting taken off the.

Speaker 3 (17:38):
Board really well, yeah, because well you're at fifty five
right now and you got a lot.

Speaker 5 (17:43):
It was at sixty four, then sixty five, and then
I saw the big gray slash come through the coming
off the ball. We're coming off second half begins.

Speaker 1 (17:53):
We're gonna take a look at one of the big
NFL games coming up in a second.

Speaker 3 (17:56):
But just this because you know, you brought.

Speaker 1 (17:58):
It up last night, and after the dr of Pete
Alonzo's big home run, we didn't get a chance to
really get into it, but something that I really wanted
to talk about, and I said, ah, you know it.
But look, we had alonzo home run and the Mets winning,
and then we had the end of the Falcons and
the Bucks and that was so yeah.

Speaker 3 (18:15):
I mean, we had a lot of stuff last night.

Speaker 1 (18:17):
But something that I'm really I can't believe didn't get
more attention today was the drop pop up that Pete
Alonzo had in the eighth inning, right now the eighth inning,
the Brewers are up to nothing and Edwin Diaz is
trying to close things out here. So they go to
the ninth inning just down two runs and not more,
and with two outs and two on, Diz induces a

(18:38):
pop up down the first baseline. Alonzo goes to get
it and it pops out of his glove and instead
of the third out, Diz has to go back.

Speaker 3 (18:47):
And I said, great, this is going to be a
double and we're gonna losing four nothing.

Speaker 1 (18:50):
But Diez gets out of the inning, then setting the
stage for Alonzo's home run. When that play happened, I said,
did that fan reach out for the ball?

Speaker 3 (18:58):
Oh my god? And then I, you know, I kind
of looked at it.

Speaker 1 (19:01):
And then the second replay they showed you couldn't really
tell because there's the netting that is up in between
the stands in the field, but you can see that
the fan. When Alonz's going for the foul ball, a
fan leans over and pushes his way all the way
into the field to interfere with Alonzo on the pop up.
I don't know if that had any sort of impression

(19:22):
on why Alonzo dropped it, but you look at that
and go, that's fan interference?

Speaker 3 (19:26):
How is that not called?

Speaker 1 (19:28):
The guy leans all the way over and pushes his
hand all the way out and tries to get the ball,
and then he's laughing after that play, laughing. I didn't
wonder if Alonso part of his chef's kiss celebration after
home run was directed at the fan a little bit.
That's normally what he does when he hits a home
run with the first base coach, But I wonder if
that was directed to him a little bit.

Speaker 3 (19:45):
But I saw that, and I'm like, how is how
is that not called? Like?

Speaker 1 (19:49):
I'm like, I would have been real like if the
Mets lost like four to two or four to three
and that wasn't called. Diez gave up a hit, like
I'd be How did that not get called? How do
you not go back and look at that and say, oh, man, well,
the fan clearly interfered with Alonzo on that and there
was no call on I mean, he reaches out, he's
all the way at him, and Alonzo kind of stops
and doesn't get under the ball as much as he

(20:10):
shouldn't and puts his glove out to catch it. He
still should have it, But I wonder what kind of
impact that had on it. And you know, if the
game went different that play again, we would have talked
about that play all night last night.

Speaker 3 (20:21):
Forget about the comeback all. You know, Hey, the Mets.

Speaker 1 (20:23):
Lose four to three or whatever it is, all they
come back, and then it would be how do they
get those two runs? Because that should have been that's
fan interference right there, and that should have been an out.

Speaker 5 (20:31):
No, I would agree one hundred percent right. We watched
the guy half assed kind of reach out. You know,
he's making no effort to catch that ball. He gets
behind Alonzo's head and Alonzo kind of gives him a
look and then he goes to clap. The other dude
is Internet famous because he pointed and said, haha, pretty boy,
like he Keith Nanz episode of Seinfeld.

Speaker 3 (20:54):
A nice game, pretty boy.

Speaker 6 (20:56):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (20:56):
But yeah, I think you're one hundred percent right. That
doesn't get called it should have. I mean, is it
because he was behind the net.

Speaker 3 (21:06):
Yeah, I don't know. I mean, so it wasn't truly
his hand it was, but you could still interfere with the.

Speaker 5 (21:13):
You know, obviously being being facetious, but yeah, I mean
you would think the netting, you know, and some level
would be taught, so you know, you couldn't you know.

Speaker 3 (21:24):
Like a fence. But instead this guy's full out.

Speaker 1 (21:28):
Yeah really, I mean that would have been that would
have been a different outcome in time. Somehow they get it,
because that's how it normally goes for the Mets. All
Alonzo drops a pop up, then there's a single and
it's for nothing and the game is over right.

Speaker 5 (21:43):
Yeah, on the way down to first on the home run,
if he didn't at least do a degeneration X chop,
then was he really even rounding the bases properly?

Speaker 1 (21:51):
Yeah, like I wanted to really round first basically go
hey blank you you jerk.

Speaker 3 (21:56):
I mean, I appreciate the chef's kids, don't get me wrong.

Speaker 5 (22:00):
Would have been a pause, do a little dance, maybe
one of those surf sway kind of things like the.

Speaker 3 (22:05):
Falcons did last. Because the thing is you that continue.
That's what he does.

Speaker 1 (22:09):
Like, that's him in the first bed, that's his celebration,
but he kind of he wasn't really looking at there.
He was looking up a little bit, like almost into
the stands when he did it.

Speaker 3 (22:17):
It's almos enough to say, yeah, chef's kiss. Thanks a
lot for that.

Speaker 1 (22:20):
There you go, there you go take that all right now,
Now Jesse Winker is gonna score it really pitch you off?

Speaker 3 (22:25):
How about that?

Speaker 5 (22:26):
Uh when he scored? Yeah, manliterate, like I want his helmet,
that helmet, Man, that was great. Like the way he
slammed that down, that was that was more fierce than
any Gronk Spike.

Speaker 3 (22:37):
Yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (22:38):
That he was gonna make it out of Milwaukee alive.
Like we're waiting for you in the parking lot.

Speaker 3 (22:43):
Man.

Speaker 5 (22:43):
The guy has a security detail rivaling that if Taylor
swipped him or anybody else showing up for a World
two you you gotta.

Speaker 1 (22:52):
You gotta be escorted onto the bus man, make sure nobody's.

Speaker 5 (22:56):
There were this clown out. Why do I need to
It's season. We'll just start with you, so.

Speaker 1 (23:03):
We'll lot more baseball coming up throughout the rest of
the show. We'll give you our picks for the NL
and Alds. But big weekend in the NFL, and look
the game of the week. There's always something special when
the Cowboys and the Steelers play, right. It's just that
that that I talked about it last night. When when
when something happens big in baseball. I'm transformed to when
I'm twelve years old again. And that's what baseball does.

(23:26):
But when when you talk about something about the Steelers
and the Cowboys, it's like all these memories just start
flooding in your head about super Bowls and big games.
And I mean, it's just that you're back in the
seventies and you're watching Lynn Swan make that catch in
the Super Bowl. You're you know, you're watching Roger Stallback
try to throw it past to Jackie Smith and he
drops it in the end zone.

Speaker 3 (23:45):
Hall of Famer.

Speaker 1 (23:46):
You're seeing all these things something special about the Cowboys
and the Steelers. But they get it going tonight or
Sunday Night and Sunday Night football it's the game of
the week. And I got to tell you, I'm glad
we had a week where we didn't have to worry
about who's going to be the starting quarterback for the Steelers.

Speaker 3 (24:00):
Right that.

Speaker 1 (24:00):
Notice how that conversation was sort of went away, maybe
because Mike Tomlin and said, hey, guys, I'm just not
gonna talk about it until until I have to, which
we told you what was gonna happen three weeks ago,
we said Russell Wilson's gonna not be cleared to play
as long as Justin Field is playing well. And when
he doesn't play well for a few games, then after
a couple of weeks, Russell Wilson will be magically cleared.

(24:23):
He'll be out there, but he may never get out
there because Justin Fields is playing well.

Speaker 3 (24:27):
And even in the loss versus the Colts, it shows
you Fields needs to stay the quarterback. Right. Yes, he
had a couple of bad.

Speaker 1 (24:34):
Plays at one play where he lost a lot of
yards and he fumbled, but he got Pittsburgh back into it.

Speaker 3 (24:39):
Right.

Speaker 1 (24:39):
You can't win sixteen ten every week. I get the Steelers.
That's how they want to win. That's a Mike Tomlin win.

Speaker 5 (24:46):
Right.

Speaker 1 (24:46):
Jay Glazer told us that a few weeks ago. Hey Man,
sixteen ten nuts a Mike Tomlin win. You can't win
like that every week in the NFL anymore.

Speaker 3 (24:52):
You can't. You just can't.

Speaker 1 (24:53):
You got to get with the modern times. And by
that I mean, like you know, twenty twenty four, you can't.
You can't win sixteen ten. You need quarterback to make plays,
and Justin Field showed you just how dynamic he was.

Speaker 3 (25:04):
Last week he.

Speaker 1 (25:05):
Single handedly got the Steelers back into it. Yes, he
made a couple of bad plays, way more better plays
then he had bad plays. Russell Wilson can't do what
Justin Fields can.

Speaker 3 (25:16):
He just can't. He just can't do it. He's someone
who is limited, and he's the guy.

Speaker 1 (25:21):
And this is why Mike Tomlin loves him, I'm sure,
because he would be able to execute the sixteen ten games.

Speaker 3 (25:26):
Oh, I could get you sixteen ten.

Speaker 1 (25:27):
Maybe throw a touchdown here, you know, I'll go sixteen
to twenty seven for one hundred and sixty yards where
he scrambled for twenty twenty five yards. Yeah, it doesn't
work that way. You can't win like that every week.
But that's the vision, right, that's the best case scenario.
But as you know, best case scenarios don't happen. You
need somebody out there that can put up thirty points.
Justin Fields is that guy. And I think everybody has
seen that by now. But still you got some Steeler

(25:49):
fans are gonna say, oh, what's gonna happen? What if
we saw Russell Wilson, Well, then you would have lost
that game thirty to seven. Okay, that's how it goes.
I still can't believe that there's a faction of Steeler
fans that want to se Russell Way. Justin Fields is
your guy. He is that good, he is that dynamic.
And if you think otherwise, well, you just like losing games,
all right, So I like winning games. So I keep

(26:10):
Justin Fields in and he's staying, and I think that's
the way it's gonna go, simply because that has not
been a story at all this week.

Speaker 5 (26:17):
Yeah, there was a great article Players Tribune by Pat
Fryarmouth talking about the quarterback room and watching Wilson and
Fields work with each other and competing each day and
you know, hey, you know this is gonna be great,
and then getting to a point where in a practice,

(26:38):
here's the quote, Justin took a deep shot down the
field to pickings on a post and it was a
really tight window, one of those tight tight and a
tight tight like he's two go tight tight, breaking bad
references NFL windows. There's only a handful of guys in
the world who can hit that window. Justin hit it,
and you can hear and feel all the guys looking

(26:59):
at each other like, damn, he's legit. We're gonna be okay,
We're gonna be more than okay. And then it kind
of kept kept going and people are he's saying, hey,
guys asking him in group texts or whatever, how your qbs?

Speaker 3 (27:14):
What do you think?

Speaker 5 (27:15):
And he said, quote, we got two damn good ones.
Now part of that is what else is he gonna say? Yeah, yeah,
I got my trepidation. But to put you know, I
got trepidation. I'm glad you asked me about this.

Speaker 1 (27:25):
I want to talk about both of these guys and
say out maybe what is better?

Speaker 3 (27:29):
Maybe what is it?

Speaker 5 (27:30):
I really want to have this conversation. Yeah, this guy's
got ball security issues. This guy's old and got hurt
pushing the blocking sled.

Speaker 3 (27:38):
Should he have been pushing the sled? No, but I
mean you get hurt pushed to the block he s led,
what do we doing? But just did the idea of
him writing this article and putting any of that out there.
You didn't need to do that now. He didn't need
to do that now.

Speaker 5 (27:51):
So you see with with Justin Fields, he made like
that one play was boneheaded last week, right the turnover
when he should have just fell on the ball instead
tries to make a play it gets batted out and
you get the turnover. But otherwise you've seen him making
big plays down the field. This week, they're gonna need
him right. This is where his skill set is is

(28:13):
just so much more important to what this offense can become.
Because Patterson's not playing, You've got Warren still banged up,
Nazie Harris is a little banged up. You need the legs.
You're gonna need him to make some plays with his
legs this week in a big matchup. So for Fields, yeah,
you've watched it increase week after week and it's gotten better.

(28:34):
Uh yeah, they took the l last week. Part of that. Yeah,
the offense got a slow start, but the defense got
absolutely gashed. So you know, for Fields in company, I
think you saw enough downfield where you're you're feeling pretty
good with the situation that you have. Whatever Russ is
and will be. You know, Mike Tomlin, you know, gets
that wide eyed stare. Nobody's asking the follow up, So

(28:57):
it's das and answered.

Speaker 1 (28:59):
Now as far as it goes for Sunday, like what
am I leading into? He's gonna make the Cowboys life miserable.
He is gonna make their lives miserable on Sunday night.
The Cowboys defense is not very good. Right, We've got
nobody to chase him. We told you the Steelers. The
Cowboys are just not good, right, you can you can

(29:20):
put this out there. Maybe they're they're a team that
you don't want to get into a shootout with that
that's where they are, which they're Those aren't teams you
talk with the Cowboys. Those are teams like, hey, you
don't want to get a shootout with the Jets. You know,
you don't want to get it shoot out with the
but you know no, But that's who are there. They're
a team today. If you're not careful, you're not They're
a tricky team because Dak and Seedy can put some
points on the board. But this is gonna be a game,

(29:43):
and a nationally televised game. This is gonna end all
kinds of questions about who should be the quarterback because
Justin Field is gonna do what he does. He's gonna
throw the football well enough. He's gonna have dynamic plays
throwing it. He's gonna have dynamic plays running the football.
The Steelers at home, the Cowboys, he's going to frustrate
Dallas the entire game, and you're gonna look at this
game and say, Okay, I'm sold on Justin Fields. This

(30:06):
is no longer a debate. And Mike Tomlin's gonna have
to answer the question after the Cowboy game.

Speaker 3 (30:11):
I suppose he can't.

Speaker 1 (30:12):
But at national television all this stuff like can you
Sometimes you can blow things off when you're playing at
one o'clock on a Sunday or four o'clock on a Sunday,
but things are always amplified when you play on national
TV at a big game by Justin Fields, which is
what's gonna happen, and they're gonna beat the Cowboys, that's
gonna be the story. He's gonna have to say something.
He's got to do some kind of Yes, Justin is

(30:32):
our guy. He's that good. We're gonna have to We're
gonna get that after Sunday's game.

Speaker 5 (30:36):
You have to go out and have the dominant effort
and looking at the way it matches up, what was
the thing that felled them last week? Big plays? Okay,
potential there, but Brandon Cooks isn't there. It's basically Cedee
Lamb and a giant question mark. Next, I guess to
the tight end. Ferguson.

Speaker 3 (30:52):
They can't run the ball right.

Speaker 5 (30:54):
Jonathan Taylor, before he got hurt, was smashing his way
through the line. Well, that's not gonna happen. Cowboys don't
have a running back that's gonna be able to do that.
And defensively, who's given you any heat? No Lawrence, no Parsons. Yeah,
give me the Steelers in minus two and a half
totals at forty four. This is one that could be

(31:15):
a laugher because I don't see them giving up the
big comeback like you saw their division counterpart Ravens do
a week ago.

Speaker 3 (31:26):
Exit out about a Fresca exit Swallen Dome.

Speaker 1 (31:28):
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Carmon live from the
TIREC dot Com studios, time out to find out what's
trending in the wide world of sports. A guy who
once won a high school quarterback derby with Russell Wilson,
it's teem to sega.

Speaker 6 (31:40):
Wow, that's impressive. I had to put that on my resume.
Is that?

Speaker 5 (31:44):
So?

Speaker 6 (31:44):
Do you have tape?

Speaker 3 (31:45):
Yeah? I do. I saw that.

Speaker 1 (31:46):
Oh wait wait wait, I'm like it says quarterback Derby.
I'm sorry, it's editor of the school paper Derby. That
was why I saw that's right.

Speaker 3 (31:53):
Wow, creating.

Speaker 6 (31:54):
I am on. I gotta think of a word. It's
Russell Wilson.

Speaker 3 (32:00):
The really good words he's got Nato bubbles. I need
a word better than the word un limited.

Speaker 6 (32:06):
Yeah, well, I didn't want to copy. I don't know
if it's you know, copyrighted or anything like that. By
the way, it is coming up the Sunday night game
Dallas two and two at Pittsburgh three and one. Here
the Steelers have allowed just thirteen points a game. Dallas
running game. Maybe you've seen the Dallas running game this year.

Speaker 3 (32:24):
I have not seen one. I have not seen one.

Speaker 6 (32:26):
Yeah, it's almost accurate. It's the worst in the NFL
as a team. It's seventy five yards rushing per game.
Just for the record.

Speaker 1 (32:34):
Surprising that eighty six year old Ezekiel Elliott did not
jump start the running game like.

Speaker 6 (32:40):
Yeah, should talk to the GM about that. Tony look
pretty good over at tennis straight exactly. They could use
him back.

Speaker 1 (32:47):
Listen couldn't afford Henry didn't want to draft the Allen
kid the Jets got, But what else you got?

Speaker 3 (32:52):
What else you got? Did that? Derek Henry.

Speaker 6 (32:54):
Meanwhile, Baltimore is that I think two twenty a game
on the ground as a team, So slight different between
those two clubs. In college football on Fox TV, it's
late in the third quarter, Number six of Oregon still
shutting out in Michigan State twenty four to nothing, and
they've started the fourth quarter at UNLV ranked twenty fifth
in the country, four and oh so far this year.

(33:15):
This game on FS one, Syracuse tied thirty one thirty
one at Vegas. Houston was one and four, but gotta
win at TCU thirty to nineteen. Houston Texans running back
Joe Mixon is out this weekend with an ankle injury.
Washington running back Brian Robinson is called a game time
decision with a bad knee. Washington running back Austin Eckler
will return to play after his concussion. Brown's running back

(33:38):
Nick Chubb is still out this weekend after his knee
injuries of a year ago. Cleveland tight end David and
Joku is questionable with a bad ankle. New England will
start running back Antonio Gibson. Giants running back Devin Singletary
is doubtful with a groin injury, and Giants wide receiver
Molik Neighbors is out this weekend. He's still in concussion protocol.
Jonathan Taylor Colts out with a sprained ankle. Padres pitcher

(34:01):
Joe musk Grove is out for the year. He needs
Tommy John surgery so he could miss all of next year. Also,
the Mets will start pitcher Codei Senga tomorrow at Philadelphia
back from the calf injury. The two American League Division
Series best of fives each start tomorrow as well. That
includes the Yankees hosting Kansas City. Yankee first baseman Anthony
Rizzo out with his two fractured fingers. Dodger first baseman

(34:24):
Freddie Freeman, with the bad ankle, did practice in LA today,
says he's good to go for the series. He'll give
it a go. The Reds hired officially Terry Francona as manager,
gave a three year contract plus an option year, and
the two WNBA playoff games are done tonight. New York's
lead and the best of five semifinals now two games
to one after losing at Las Vegas ninety five eighty

(34:45):
one Sabrina enescue and defeat one of seven shooting from
the floor four points, five assists, five turnovers, and the
lead is two games to one from Minnesota, which won
at Connecticut ninety to eighty one the FISA Collier with
twenty six points. The Celtic took their exhibition opener against Denver,
and right now we've got an exhibition game in southern
California in Palm Springs, Minnesota. Leading the Lakers is Dante DiVincenzo.

(35:09):
Now with the Timberwolves eleven points in the first quarter,
three of three from long distance, fifty eight to forty
nine at the break. No, no lebron James, no Anthony
Davis for LA.

Speaker 3 (35:19):
Back to you, Thank you, Steve Oh.

Speaker 1 (35:21):
We'll get an update from this game coming up live
about fifteen minutes. Bronnie James. That Bronnie James era has begun.
That's coming up in about fifteen minutes. But straight ahead,
Mike and I we're gonna do it. We do it
every single week. I put my thirteen and two record
on the line for upset specials. Who do we like
this week? That's coming up next right here, Jason to Mike.

(35:43):
This is Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (35:56):
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon Live from the
Tirack dot Com Studios. College football Right now, Oregon still
shutting out Michigan State twenty four to nothing, about to
go up even more early in the fourth quarter.

Speaker 3 (36:12):
Meanwhile, Kyle McCord.

Speaker 1 (36:14):
Just through a red zone picks. Syracuse and UNLV tied
at thirty one a piece. And you know, Justin I said,
he looks so smooth. The cleats he's wearing. It looks
like he's wearing slides.

Speaker 3 (36:24):
It looks he's he looks like.

Speaker 1 (36:26):
It because he's got like the black design over the
toe part. It looks like he's wearing slides. Hey, I
just dropped his cool men dropping back throwing balls, dropping back,
throw ball, wearing slides.

Speaker 3 (36:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (36:35):
A couple of times as we got the second half underway, Jason,
it started to look like he was feeling himself a
little bit too much of the I could fit the
ball in there like no, that's where bad things happen.

Speaker 3 (36:47):
Man.

Speaker 5 (36:47):
These guys are pretty fast on the defensive side of things.
So watch watching him play is you know, a little
bit of living dangerously. Now we'll see how it plays out.
We got eight minutes left to go in this one.
But just a fun is hell game, no fussure about.
On the other side, Oregon's beating the hell out of
Michigan State and they've played I mean, as Pete Futek

(37:08):
told us at the top of the hour, I mean
it's been suspected times. You're like, all right, this looks good.
I guess succeed and proceed and look to a better day,
maybe a look ahead kind of thing. But they've made
plenty of mistakes and Michigan State's just done nothing with it.

Speaker 3 (37:23):
Exit out about a Fresco exit swollen down.

Speaker 1 (37:25):
The Jason Smiths are with Mike carmon Live the Tyreck
dot Com Studios. I will have more college football coming
up in a little bit, but time now for Mike
and I to give you our upset special picks of
the weekend in football. And I told you last night.
Former NFL players are dming me, Hey, who do you like?
Who do you like? Because thirteen and two? So another

(37:45):
three and oh week?

Speaker 3 (37:46):
Last week? Yeah, I found an acbar card?

Speaker 1 (37:49):
Is it him, Oh, did know it's not acbar No
you can no, no, no, no, no, I'm not had.

Speaker 5 (37:53):
A rookie card and much stuff I like. I have
a little stack of all the guys that I've worked with.

Speaker 3 (37:57):
Oh nice, that's pretty cool.

Speaker 5 (37:59):
Like and when I find my I add autographs autograph
cards out there.

Speaker 3 (38:03):
Yeah, so again it's weird.

Speaker 1 (38:05):
I'm like, okay, oh wow, I don't like every game upsets, okay,
set specials. I will say, I'm never picking the rams again,
because ask me why a record is in games.

Speaker 3 (38:13):
I don't pick the Rams. Those are your losses thirteen
and oh I'm oo too. And I picked the Rams
my upside.

Speaker 5 (38:19):
Funny because I had them circled as a potential maybe
just to spite you.

Speaker 1 (38:23):
Yeah no, maybe it'll work for you. Won't work if
I pick it, it won't work. If you pick it, it might work,
might happen. But because you know, I feel it. Some
weeks I pick two games. Some weeks I pick three.
Some weeks I p this week there's one upset special
I like. Right, it's one of those weeks where there's
one game I like, and I'll kick it off and
I will tell you right now for my upset special

(38:43):
this week. Give me the Bengals getting three. Okay, Bengals
getting three over the Ravens. This is always a rock fight, right,
These games are always a rock fight. Cincinnati is desperate,
Baltimore is feeling good. But but Burrow is locked in.
You hear him talk this week. He knows how big
a game this is. He knows how they have to

(39:05):
show up and win. And this is gonna be one
of those. Boy, it doesn't seem like it should be
this close. It feels like Baltimore is a lot better.
But Cincinnati. Again, these games are always close. They're always
rock fights. And I will tell you who's gonna be
the difference. We have a big game for Joe Burrow.
But this is gonna be the Chase Brown come out game.
This is gonna be where suddenly, oh hey, wait a minute,
him and Zach Moss splitting time.

Speaker 3 (39:26):
That's great.

Speaker 1 (39:27):
Zach Moss has gotten in the end zone a couple
of times last week. That has saved his fantasy days.
But Chase Brown is the guy. He was why they
were comfortable letting Joe Mixon go. He's averaging five yards
of carry. He's gonna be the guy.

Speaker 3 (39:39):
Give me.

Speaker 1 (39:40):
Give me Cincinnati twenty seven to twenty four. I'll take
the three points. I won't need them, but i'll take them.

Speaker 3 (39:45):
Here, you go shop around.

Speaker 5 (39:47):
You got two to three and falling on that two
and a half on some spots. But yeah, take the
field goal. You did take it to the over because
that's at forty nine, one of the highest numbers on
the board this week. I was looking at the Rams, right, Dobbs,
Noah Watson, banged up, Jordan Love, still questioning how much
he's really ready to go. Gave it the old college

(40:09):
try and that comeback effort against Minnesota, and obviously for
the Rams, the walking wounded left and right. But with
Williams having himself some big efforts in the run game
in support of Stafford, maybe plus three at home in
front of all those Packer fans, you can give them
a little bit of chaos. Houston's a slight home favorite

(40:31):
against Buffalo, so that's not terribly exciting. So we move
that one along. I'll take your Jets plus two and
a half.

Speaker 1 (40:38):
In all, I'm always so nervous picking the London games.

Speaker 5 (40:42):
No points right over unders forty probably gonna rain like hell.

Speaker 3 (40:48):
It's one of those things.

Speaker 5 (40:49):
Either the Jets don't show up and it's absolutely disastrous
and you know, we have the bat signal alerted for
Devonte Adams immediately, or they go and take care of
business and actually get after Sam Darnold.

Speaker 3 (41:04):
I'll take the ladder.

Speaker 1 (41:05):
So there it is our Upset Special Picks of the Week.
Twitter at how about a Fresco? Mike gets swollen dome,
the Jason Smiths Aer with Mike Harmon. Coming up next,
Brownie James making his NBA debut.

Speaker 3 (41:17):
We're gonna go live and get an update on everything
we need from the NBA. This is Fox Sports Radio.
