Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yeah, oh, congratulations. It was really cool. I don't know
if Mike God and they told you, but we actually
got the breaking news about you qualifying for the European
Ladies Tour On our last show he led it as
breaking news. Yeah, it was really cool. So that was
the twenty first of December, that little clip, and it
is now that eighteenth of January and Amelia Garvey is
back home and having a little break and we've got

(00:22):
a chance to catch up with her.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Good morning, Good morning, Leslie. How are you.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Oh look, we were stoked to hear of that wonderful
news that you have broken into that European Lady's Tour.
So given that, tell us a little bit about twenty
twenty four before we look at twenty twenty five.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
Yeah, So the decision to go over and try and
qualify for the lt was mainly based on the fact
that I was failed to qualify for the LPGA this
year and in the last five years, I would say
the European Tour has grown a lot, the prize have

(01:00):
become a lot bigger, and they've got a lot more
events on the schedule than they ever used to. So
I was always planning on playing Q school if I
didn't finish top ten on EPSOM for the European Tour,
just to have the option. So when you know, my
year finished up, I decided to stay back in America

(01:24):
and we I traveled to Morocco. It was probably end
of November, and yeah, I mean it's obviously I got
the result that I wanted, and I'm really looking forward
to having a change of scenery next year and being
able to compete against you know, a different group of girls,

(01:47):
but also a very high standard standard of golf as well.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
And you have worked so hard for this. We know
all the trials and tribulations of being a professional sports
person and it is such a tough gig out there,
but you are now in an opportunity to do something
really special on that lady's European Tour that also does
if I right, is there a bit of Saudi Arabian
money in there as well.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
Yeah, so that was kind of what I was talking
about over I think the last three years now, the
Saudis that are kind of it's basically similar to the
liv Golf on the men's side. They've actually wanted to
buy the European Tour and they haven't done that, but

(02:34):
they have about four events a year that ran by
the Saudi Group and they are all two million dollar persons,
which is you know, that's one point eight million more
than a normal IPS and Tour event what we play for.

(02:56):
So yeah, they've chucked in a bunch of money there,
and that's was mainly the deciding factor for me, was
the financial reason to go over there and try for
the tour because on average, the European Tour, well over
the course of the year, they're playing for about thirty

(03:16):
five million US more than the EPSOM Tour. So there's
definitely some good results all mean that, you know, I
can make a fear bit more money on this tour,
but still, you know, I'm still hoping and working towards
getting on the LPGA Tour as my final goal.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
Absolutely. Have you changed anything about your game of golf?

Speaker 2 (03:40):
Oh, there's been that, you know. I've dealt with a
lot of things this year, some coaching changes and just
also just figuring out, okay, what how do I want
to play the game? I think the last few years
is a professional I've mixed around with a few different
coaches and I've finally got to a point where I

(04:03):
feel like I'm playing like myself again and playing like
I did when I was you know, thirteen, fourteen, and
just swinging a lot more naturally, which the last i'd
say four or five months, I've really found some form
going into the end of my EPSOM season, probably starting
off at the US Open like middle of a year.

(04:25):
Got some momentum there, and it's just kind of taking
that through to the end of the year, which obviously
showed at European Qualifying School.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
And you did it, I have to say, well, looking
at the results anyway with relatives.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
Yeah, yeah, So I played played very well. So basically
it was two weeks of qualifying and top twenty. After
two weeks, I was probably about four hundred girls total
and top twenty get their full card. But my goal

(05:01):
was to actually come top five because the top five
are the only ones out of that twenty that will
get into those Saudi events. So I was cruising going
into the last round to secure my card, but I
really wanted to finish top five, and I managed to

(05:22):
shoot eight under the last day and finish solo fourth,
so definitely ticked off what I needed to do in
order to make the most out of my opportunities next year.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
Oh fantastic. Absolutely, that is so good. Now just in
terms of are you feeling refreshed given what is ahead
of you in twenty twenty five, you have had a
good break here at home.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
Yes, yes, I took a couple of weeks off. I
played a little bit socially. I actually played the day
after I got back from Morocco on Christmas Eve. But
a lot of it's just fun stuff while some back
and take break. But now definitely getting back into okay,
what do I need to do to get ready for

(06:05):
the season again. And I'm going to be back home
till the thirty first of January, with the first event
being back in Morocco the first week of FIPS. So yeah,
I'm definitely feeling refreshed. It's always nice to be home
and being on the European Tour. It's the travel is
going to be a lot different to what I'm used

(06:27):
to My first what five events I think cover three
continents or four continents actually, so I just got to
make sure that I'm fully prepared for, you know, the
change and you know, getting on twelve hour flights instead
of two hour flights across America. But I'm really looking

(06:50):
forward to it, and I think that's why, you know,
I am feeling refreshed, because I'm actually excited for this
year and really looking forward to just like getting on
a new tour and having what I said, like a
bit of a change of scenery.

Speaker 1 (07:05):
And I guess too because we had a check with
Momoka Kabori before Christmas as well, that means you'll be
up against two on the l E t Yes, So
I was.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
Just speaking to her the other day. Actually I haven't Yeah,
I haven't really rubbed shoulders with Momoka for a while,
to be fair, we've you know, she went straight to
the European tour after college and I went down the
American route. So it's going to be really nice. She'll
probably she's my built in friend now on the on

(07:35):
the European tour, I guess, being a Kiwi and from
obviously North Canterbury as well, So yeah, it's going to
be really nice. She's, you know, she's exceeded and excelled
over there in Europe, so she'll be showing me.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
The ropes a little bit.

Speaker 2 (07:52):
I've already asked her a few questions about just some
travel stuff and about how to how am I going
to pay my tax is now now that I'm not
in America. So she's helped me out a bit there,
and I'm sure she'll come in clutch a little bit
with some questions I'll have throughout the year.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
Well, great, key, we sticking together. Ah, that's fantastic Morocco.
It sounds so exotic to me.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
Oh I'm not. I thought so too until I was
over there for two weeks. Right.

Speaker 1 (08:23):
Oh, that's funny, just in tombs of Oh. I just
had something else that wasn't on the list here. I
can't remember what it is. But have you been back
and played at Kaiapoi?

Speaker 2 (08:36):
No, but I'm going back there. I'm going back for
around on Saturday next week and I'll catch up with
everyone there, which will be good.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
Sure. Well, anything else that we need to know that
I didn't ask.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
You, No, I think got all bases covered, right.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
Oh, Well, what an exciting year. I'm so stoked for you,
really glad that we've been able to catch up. But
we understanding how you know the difficulties of being living
your dream? I guess in some ways, but it's not easy.
It's not an easy road to get where you need
to be.

Speaker 2 (09:09):
Right, No, not at all, but it's all worth it
in the end.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
Amelia Garvin, thank you so much. Go really well. We'll
be watching with interest.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
