Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Radio Hodarkeys Off the Record podcast with Greg Previn.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Let's have a chat with the Nudge Curta James Cuder.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
Greg, it's great to.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Have you back on the airwaves again. Your first album
came out twenty eleven, the second album was in twenty sixteen,
Dark Arts, and here we are in twenty twenty four
and there's a new song. We'll get to that in
the moment, but just a bit of a recap. You
don't have to bring us up to speed in the
last five years, but obviously there's been other things going on.
We end that Fly My Pretty show a couple of
weeks ago in Wellington.
Speaker 4 (00:33):
Well Actually, funnily enough, I was heavily involved, but not
as a musician. Ryan and EDII were both on stage
performing and Ryan had a great new track, really exciting song.
But I was on the other side because I work
at Messi University, at the College of Creative Arts and
we've just got this new venue called the Great Hall.
I managed to convince fly My Preduce to come in
(00:54):
and do the recording there, and we connected it up
with our recording studios and our TV studio. We had
an awesome time, so I was on the sort of
venue production side of things this time. But it was
a great event and I thoroughly enjoyed it and it
all went off, both technically and the new songs.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
It was awesome.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
And this new venue is it open to any band
to come along and perform in and possibly record.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Absolutely.
Speaker 5 (01:19):
You know.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
It's a thousand capacity space. It's in the old Great
Hall as part of the Dominion Museum. And because it's
connected to our Bachelor of Commercial Music and our Bachelor
of Screen Arts programs, we're able to connect it to
those other spaces we have on campus, including the recording studio.
So I mean, that's a really exciting thing for me
to be able to have another space, acoustically treated space
(01:41):
where you can listen to what's happening on stage and
have a really good recording and capture that on stage things.
But I mean, I guess look out for that as
well as live streams and the fut future. I think
we're all excited about using a live venue in those ways.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
This is good for Wellington, and you've got another venue
in the city happening soon, Mio Nui, which is also
a capacity of about a thousand.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
People exactly hopefully in the future the Festival of the
Arts are working on a new venue. So actually, in
a really short space of time, Wellington's venue situation for
that size space really improved, you know, almost in a
six month period. The level of gigs that are particularly
coming through Miao Nui in terms of internationals picking up
on those tours that are coming through places like the
(02:23):
Power Station is really cool.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
So I'm really excited.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Great stuff. I mean, Wellington's always been known for its
support of the arts and it's great to see that's
thriving now.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
It's a place where people make I think, and they
also make connections, long lasting connections and collaborations, which actually
segues into this collaboration with John Pisathas. I've been talking
to John about Calls Me and about the work that
the Nudge and John did together to make this song,
and he talks a lot about collaboration and the spirit
(02:54):
of collaboration, particularly in Wellington.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
Yeah, you get bands mixing things up all the time.
I mean a Fat Freddy's Drop and the Black Seeds
have sort of swapped members over the years. Trinity roots
of people that did the hop of around between bands
and so forth, and how did you guys get involved,
because I mean you're a hard out rockband. I've seen
you guys play and rip the roof off places, and
ed Aya has been compared to Animal off the Muppets.
He is one of my favorite drummers to watch. So
(03:20):
how did you end up with a composer of orchestral
music and create such a mellow song together?
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (03:25):
Well, I actually think the song it was the song's vault.
You know, Ryan wrote this song, a beautiful I guess
sort of soul blues track, and I guess we didn't
have that feeling where we needed to animal all over
the drums on it.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
You know.
Speaker 4 (03:40):
Their feeling was that we just needed to keep this
one tasty. And so when we after we record it,
we were listening to listening to it and it's got
these first two vocal verses and then it goes into
this chord progression and we're kind of like, were's this going?
And someone had the idea of, well, it would be
awesome to have some strings and some different sounds. And
Ito I had just been working with John the Little
(04:00):
Bushman and Insis Tours, and so he's like, I know,
John Persarthus, I'll just ask him, and so we did
and John was like, oh yeah. And then but then
he listened to the track and he was like, yeah, really, keen,
this is awesome. I'd love to But it was funny
because he was nu us as a stunkin rock band
as well, and was like, ah, yeah, that kind of
(04:22):
like me. I like thunderous drums and orchestral and same chord.
And then and then they sent me this sweet little
he was he was really surprised and it's quite a
funny story.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. He was expecting a bashing around on
the timpany and this big thing with giant organs and things,
so now it's quite the opposite. And then you're right,
it does take off into an orchestral piece. Shall we
check this thing out?
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Killed out?
Speaker 4 (04:47):
My name's James Coyle, I'm from the Nudge. I've got
this really special track by the Nudge and John possathis
called calls me on a radio holder.
Speaker 6 (05:00):
A bonnet, which is it takes away the stop and
spins surrounding mind.
Speaker 7 (05:16):
She's smart, smart.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
To be beside every day. Don't skin a cord.
Speaker 6 (05:47):
Some boys and wrists bother and NYE say to way
to me it stands by into the end, Scott came
(06:08):
from me, Bois.
Speaker 5 (06:14):
Jupp sp.
Speaker 7 (07:18):
Sp school school Star spe spe school Speak, span step
(07:45):
Stop school ste.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
It's already a heardachy and that is new from the nudge.
It's called calls me and we're lucky enough to have
the bass player and keyboardist from that band on a
zoom of this now in Wellington Counter James. Thanks for
bringing us that tune, Jordan, Greg, Yeah, what did you think, man?
It took us a nice little journey this evening, didn't it.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
That's the idea of it. That's the idea.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
You just float about in that in that last section
and just think about what it all means to you.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
So that calls me. And you said it was quite
different from the album that you did five years ago
or whenever. It was a dark arts and you're on
the process of making a new album. It wasn't right
for that, so it sort of stands alone. Can you
tell us any more about the next album that you're
currently working towards?
Speaker 3 (09:09):
I mean pretty same formula.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
We're in two Jury's studios in Newtown and have just
been plugging away where we can. Ryan's brought a bunch
of really cool tunes to the table. We're just working
them up and tracking them and i'd say that you'll
see it sometime in the next eighteen months.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
I reckon some of these songs on the next album.
You've already played live before.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Yep, we've played.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
You know.
Speaker 4 (09:37):
Quite a good thing to do as well, Greg is
just to try and play them a bit before you
record them, and so we try and do that as
much as possible. But there's a couple of freshe's there.
We're looking forward to what twenty twenty five brings. It's
going to bring your baby for me, so I might
be out of action for a couple of months in
the middle of there.
Speaker 3 (09:55):
But that's also what's.
Speaker 4 (09:57):
Been going on in the last few years as Fair
fam have grown and so you know, haven't been hungering
after shows. But I'm hoping that we get a couple
of good ones in twenty twenty five. And we've had
some tasty shows in twenty four and it.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Was lucky enough to see one of those shows just
a few months ago too. It's always a good time
seeing you guys live, So can't wait for the next one.
You mentioned before that Wellington is a sort of a
hotbed of people jumping between bands and collaborating a lot.
Are you yourself got any other musical projects on the go?
Speaker 4 (10:26):
Oh yeah, so I play in Newtown Rocks Didy collection
of Mate. I kind of call it like a reggae orchestra,
you know, in a way, although it's only a twelve.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
Piece well piece band. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
So we're doing our tour over summer down in Golden
Bay and Nelson and we do that every year and
it's a lot of fun.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
In the meantime. If we want to go back over
that song that the Nudge have done that it just
released called Calls Me, or follow anything else you guys
are doing. We're the best place to find information.
Speaker 4 (10:59):
Nudge dot cod n zed, hit us up on Facebook
or Instagram and pretty active on the air at the
moment as we promote the song. And that's another thing
to mention is to check out the video was made
in Bali by really steady Studios.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
How many people were in the orchestra that played on
this I think.
Speaker 4 (11:18):
We had We probably had about twelve string players and
bass clarinet, two flute players, the brafinist. That's about it,
and some gamalin some what indigenous instrument of Indonesia and Bali.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
They sort of tune bowls.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
Okay, and I think that possibly the first time we've
had a verbraphonist featured on Radio Hadache as well.
Speaker 5 (11:42):
That weird.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
James Coyle from The Nudge, thanks for your time on Hdarche.
