Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to Before Breakfast, a production of iHeartRadio. Good Morning.
This is Laura. Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast. Today's
tip is that you can cultivate a Saturday vibe any
day of the week. It's good to feel relaxed, no
(00:24):
matter what else is going on. Indeed, a little relaxation
might actually make you more creative if you leave yourself
open to that possibility. So most June's I have used
the phrase that June is the Friday night of summer,
all is new and the future is full of possibility,
(00:47):
but I had never really continued with that metaphor. If
June is Friday, then July is Saturday. I think a
Saturday mindset sounds like a positive thing. If you picture
a typical Saturday, there is probably some stuff you need
to do, but you are also trying to relax, to connect,
(01:10):
and to have some fun as well. I think it
is possible to cultivate a Saturday vibe any day of
the week. I have certainly been trying to do that
this summer. Since my kids' camps start a little later
than school, I've been enjoying setting my alarm a little
later too, but not so much later that I can't
(01:31):
get up and enjoy a quiet cup of coffee off
and outside before my workday begins. I've been taking the
kids in the pool most nights. An evening activity makes
any day feel like a weekend, even if it really isn't.
As for work, I've been allowing myself to work at
what I consider a relaxed pace. Now, don't get me wrong,
(01:55):
the same amount of stuff still needs to get done
as it does any other time of year. But I
have found that by creating a limited to do list
for any given day and then actually getting all of
it done, time can feel more spacious. I can go
find other things to do when I finish, and I
often do, but it all feels like a bonus. How
(02:18):
productive we feel is almost always more about mindset than
anything else. Perhaps you too, might try to cultivate a
Saturday vibe. Can you ease into your day? That might
involve waking up a little bit earlier, but sometimes that's
all right, especially if you get to bed on time.
(02:39):
Can you limit what makes it onto your calendar each day?
Probably maybe one of those meetings as in adding a
whole lot of value. Perhaps it can go. Maybe you
can put a little bit more thought into dinner like
you might on a weekend and have a relaxed meal
at night. The party can't go on too long if
you have worked the next day, but having some intention
(03:01):
for the evening makes any evening feel more festive. Maybe
it's a walk around the neighborhood. Maybe it's visiting that
new gelato place. Maybe it's having the neighbors over to
chat on the porch. If you've got little kids, make
sure you have at least a little bit of time
where you don't need to be on constant vigilance. Trade
(03:21):
off with your partner, or go for a fifteen minute
walk after work and before you pick them up from
day care, or at least really note how much time
you have after they go to bed, and before you do,
celebrate that time like you would a Saturday night party.
It's good to feel relaxed. Certainly, it's better than feeling
(03:43):
like a giant ball of stress. And curiously, I find
that when I am relaxed, I'm more creative. I entertain
ideas as they come without worrying about whether I have
the right one. I do a little bit here and there,
and it all adds up to something. There's some neuroscience
research to back this up. When the mind is relaxed,
(04:06):
that's when it tends to piece things together and sort
through problems. Stress narrows your vision, Relaxation opens things up.
So why not cultivate a Saturday vibe even if it's Monday.
There is no reason to be stressed out. Not all
(04:26):
days can be Saturday, but perhaps they can feel like
it in the meantime. This is Laura. Thanks for listening,
and here's to making the most of our time. Thanks
