Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to Before Breakfast, a production of iHeartRadio. Good Morning,
This is Laura. Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast. Today's
tip is to respect other people by respecting their preferences.
In other words, don't yuck a young Today's tip comes

(00:28):
from something I have heard a number of folks who
encourage adventurous eating tell children don't yuck somebody's yum. In
other words, don't describe what someone else loves as gross.
Allow people to enjoy what they enjoy, and if your

(00:50):
opinion doesn't enhance their enjoyment, well you can just keep
it to yourself. If you have been at a table
with the or ten set recently, I don't have to
tell you how quickly dinner conversation devolves after one child
announces that something is gross. Perhaps another child might have

(01:12):
been willing to try broccoli or fish or avocado or whatever.
They might even find these things yummy, But when someone
else deems the food gross, it is a lot harder
to encourage exploration. So don't yuck someone else's yum. Just

(01:33):
because you don't like a food doesn't mean that you
need to share this opinion with the world. It turns
out that this rule brings harmony to contexts besides the
dinner table, and also not just for children. It is
a good idea in life not to go around yucking

(01:55):
other people's yums. In other words, when you are talking
with someone, don't criticize a TV show, a book, a hobby,
a style of clothing, a restaurant, or anything else that
the person really loves. When you criticize something, and particularly

(02:15):
if you're doing so in broad and dismissive ways, the
people who like it may feel that they too are
being criticized. Instead, let other people like what they like
in peace, without deeming it the worst show ever to
be broadcast, the most sappy novel ever to be written,

(02:36):
and so forth. Now, obviously, sometimes you might be asked
to weigh in with your thoughts on what is being discussed,
and you certainly don't have to yum someone's yum if
you don't like it. But you can make your answer
more about your personal preferences than a broad declaration. Think

(02:58):
phrases like oh, it's not my favorite, or it's not
really the kind of show I watch, but I can
tell you really like it. You won't turn small talk
into hostile territory. And by not doing that, you will
make the world a better place. So don't yuck a yum.

(03:22):
Life can be tough enough. When people find pleasure in
something harmless, best to let them have it. In the meantime,
this is Laura. Thanks for listening, and here's to making
the most of our time. Hey, everybody, I'd love to

(03:49):
hear from you. You can send me your tips, your questions,
or anything else. Just connect with me on Twitter, Facebook
and Instagram at Before Breakfast pod that's the number four,
then Breakfast p o D. You can also shoot me
an email at Before Breakfast podcast at iHeartMedia dot com

(04:10):
that Before Breakfast is spelled out with all the letters.
Thanks so much, should I look forward to staying in touch.
