Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to Before Breakfast, a production of iHeartRadio. Good Morning,
This is Laura. Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast. Today's
tip is that peace of mind is priceless. If a
small bit of money would buy you lots of peace
(00:25):
of mind, then that just might be money well spent.
So the week before I wrote this, I knew I
was going to be interviewed for a podcast I had
wanted to be on. I also found out that the
tree tremmers had chosen that day to show up by
our house. The gutter guys chose that day to come clean.
(00:48):
Plus there were stonemasons and painters working outside. All of
those people can make a lot of noise. So I
decided to rent a temporary office for a few hours
that I could use, and I didn't actually wind up
needing the office. My little zoom room was quiet enough
(01:10):
to block everyone out, but knowing that the office was
available if someone wound up using a chainsaw two feet
from my window was worth the small price I paid.
I am sure that you too have had situations in
life that would make you anxious. Your regular babysitter gets
(01:32):
a jury summons and they probably won't need her, but
they might on a day when you have a big presentation,
or maybe it's travel. I was once in Chicago trying
to get to the East Coast for one of my
kid's birthday parties, and I could see that the flights
were being canceled left and right. Mine wasn't canceled yet,
(01:55):
but perhaps it was only a matter of time. But
I could see that one of the budget airlines was
flying my route first thing. The next morning, I went
ahead and bought the ticket, and sure enough my flight
was canceled. So I was glad I had booked the
new flight, because my original airline rescheduled me for two
(02:18):
days later. That wasn't going to work if I wanted
to make the party, which by the way, I did.
In the babysitter example, you might hire a backup sitter,
someone who agrees not to book anything that day in
exchange for a few guaranteed hours. Then if your normal
child care doesn't pan out, you know you have a
(02:41):
backup peace of mind. I did this with a party
recently too. I put in an order for fried chicken
at a place that was new to me. I hoped
it would work out, but just in case it didn't,
I had enough hot dogs and shrimp for everyone too,
as it is the chicken cane and we just put
(03:04):
the extra hot dogs in the freezer for next time.
All good. In any case, if you have a situation
coming up where it is very important that something go right,
ask yourself what could go wrong? Could a little extra
money create a situation where you have an automatic backup?
(03:27):
Would that easier worries? Sometimes that can't happen and you
have to hope that all goes well. But many times
it is possible to create a backup plan if you
are willing to invest some resources in it. So consider
this episode your reminder that money is a tool. If
(03:50):
it can buy you peace of mind for a price
that won't break the bank, then that might be a
good idea. You will sleep easier and when you know
what you will do when things go wrong, they often
wind up going very right. In the meantime, This is Laura,
