Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to Before Breakfast, a production of I Heart Radio.
Good Morning. This is Laura. Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast.
Today's tip is to resolve to have more fun. We
often set tough goals for the new year, and that's fine,
but so many of them are focused on not doing something.

(00:27):
Aiming to do more of something and something that's really
enjoyable can make pursuing a goal feel completely different. This
has been well a long year. Even people lucky enough
not to lose loved ones to COVID have dealt with
hardships and disappointments. Big and small. People have lost jobs

(00:51):
or have had to step away from jobs they wanted
to keep because of caregiving responsibilities. Little pleasures like going
out for an evening with ends have disappeared or I've
had to take very different forms. There have been many
good things for some of us. I've enjoyed seeing so
much of my baby's first year, but well, babies are tough.

(01:14):
I'm tired. Supervising virtual learning has been a challenge one
I know many parents are experiencing. So I am resolving
to have more fun. I want to have lots of
things I'm looking forward to. I want little moments of
the day to feel more pleasurable as well. Now, on

(01:37):
some level, I know that seems like an easy resolution,
but I actually think it's going to be just as
challenging as the more typical ones to say, lose weight.
Happiness takes work. Fun takes effort, especially now as many
traditional sources of fun are less available. I need to

(01:58):
think through the options and figure out what would still
be possible. I need to be mindful of my time
and think through what would be meaningful and enjoyable. That
requires time to plan and time to figure out logistics,
but the payoff is well fun. We can go through

(02:19):
stretches of time where we forget what it's like to
really enjoy ourselves. There are so many half to dous
and so many responsibilities. Everyone has some leisure time, but
when it appears, we're not prepared to do anything with it,
and so we do the most effortless things possible. Social

(02:41):
Media is definitely fun for a while, but seldom for
too long. I don't really find myself looking forward to
a long Twitter session, but at dinner out with my husband, sure,
A solo walk through a beautiful holiday light display, absolutely,
even a run in nice weather can be fun, or

(03:03):
a new food, or listening to a favorite podcast or album.
Resolving to have fun focuses my brain on thinking through
what I'd like to do more of with my time
and how I might make that possible. So maybe you'd
like to resolve to have more fun too. Once we
put our problem solving abilities to this question, there's no

(03:25):
telling what might happen well, except that we'll be enjoying
day to day life a lot more. In the meantime.
This is Laura. Thanks for listening, and here's to making
the most of our time. Hey, everybody, I'd love to

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
