(02:47):
the New Corner Office. Today's tip is to become a
webinar enthusiast. The near infinite number of virtual learning options
out there means you can effectively homeschool yourself, learn something
new during a break once or twice a week, and
you will find life more interesting even if you're still quarantined.
In the old days, when people still went to things,

(03:09):
a number of community centers, libraries, or houses of worship
would offer evening programming. Now, most likely you'd be in
a certain stage of life, perhaps retired to go to
a discussion of Swedish art or Egyptian literature on a
Tuesday night. But I've always had great respect for people
who went to such events instead of sitting on the
couch watching Netflix. Lectures and presentations are a great way

(03:33):
to make a night a little different and to expose
yourself to new things. These days, all that stuff is
on the Internet. You could live thousands of years and
never attend all the free webinars out there. Working from home,
does not magically give you more time. However, it does
help you escape from some group norms. In many workplaces,

(03:56):
anyone spotted watching a thirty minute video on Swedish art
might be seen as well not serious. In others, the
expectation is that you use all breaks to talk with
your colleagues. If people can't see you, then you have
a lot more freedom, and I think that's a good thing.
So take advantage of this freedom to learn new stuff

(04:17):
that frankly will make you a more interesting person to
work with. Anyway, to become a webinar enthusiast, you need
to become aware of online learning offerings. Sure there are
commercial companies like the Great Courses, but there's a lot
of informal stuff too to learn about them. Join communities
devoted to things you find interesting, and follow institutions that

(04:38):
offer lots of virtual programming, often the same libraries, universities
and community centers that did so in the past. You
can ask for recommendations. A lot of people started following
Moe Willem's doodles early in Quarantine because others recommended him.
Your neighbors, friends and family members have ideas, ask lists
some possibilities, then start assigning yourself one to two per week.

(05:04):
The goal is to do at least one, so giving
yourself two options means that when the live discussion of
Swedish art happens to coincide with the exact moment your
biggest client finally calls you back, well, oh well, you
still got the Egyptian literature one coming up on Thursday.
You can also set yourself a time limit. If you're

(05:24):
still not enthusiastic about any given webinar by say fifteen
minutes in, feel free to go do something else. But
when we're all stuck at home much of the time,
it's hard to find new and wonderful things. Becoming those
people who went to every speech at the library is
not a bad idea. In the meantime, this is Laura,

(05:46):
thanks for listening, and here's the succeeding in the New
Corner Office. The New Corner Office is a production of

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
