Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to Before Breakfast, a production of iHeartRadio. Good Morning.
This is Laura. Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast. Today's
tip is that you can still win the year. The
fourth quarter may seem like the end of the calendar year,
(00:24):
but there is still a lot of time left. In
thirteen weeks, you can probably accomplish a lot of your
goals and also convince anyone evaluating you that it has
been an incredible year. I set goals every year. I
also check in on them periodically through the year. I
(00:45):
recently realized that while my personal goals for the year
were going quite well, I was a little behind on
my work goals. For instance, I wanted to grow my
substack newsletter vander Hacks to a certain number of paid subscribers.
I have grown at some but not by quite as
many as I want. I also wanted to write a novel,
(01:07):
and I have not done that. But here's the thing,
the year isn't over yet. With a concerted push, I
am guessing I could grow vander Hacks quite a bit.
For instance, if you are listening to this and you
are not subscribed, you could perhaps go check it out.
I do three free posts and two behind the paywal
(01:28):
each week. Just go to Vanderhacks dot substack dot com.
And as for writing a novel, National Novel Writing Month
is coming up. This is in November every year, when
thousands of people write fifty thousand word novels over the
course of thirty days. This would be a great kick
in the pants for me to try something creative. Perhaps
(01:51):
you would like to join me. In any case, as
we come up on Q four, look back on any
goals set for the year. Some might no longer matter
to you, and if that is the case, feel free
to let them go. But if some are still appealing
(02:11):
and they haven't happened yet, do you see a path
toward making them happen over the next thirteen weeks. That
is long enough time to train for a race, to
start taking lessons for something, to find a trainer and
start working out regularly. It is a long enough time
to make something creative, to take a trip that is
(02:33):
on your list, to do a special one on one
activity with a family member, or to host a party.
If you are looking at work goals, I will add
a little incentive to making the most of Q four.
Many organizations do annual reviews in November or December. While
theoretically a win in February should be just as exciting
(02:56):
as a win in October. People are human. We naturally
remember things that happened recently, and we tend to treat
them as more important than things that happened a while ago.
So if you accomplish one of your big work goals
in October or early November, you can walk into that
review looking like a winner and everyone will buy that story.
(03:21):
Why not use that to your advantage. Take some time
today to think about which of your goals still matter
to you and whether there is a path to make
them happen in the next three months. For many goals,
I am guessing there is, and then you can end
the year feeling on top of the world. In the meantime,
(03:44):
this is Laura. Thanks for listening, and here's to making
the most of our time. Thanks for listening to Before Breakfast.
