Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hey, this is Annie and Samantha.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
I'm welcome to stuff I've never told you, a production
of iHeartRadio, and today, welcome to another edition of Happy Hour.
As always, drink responsibly if you choose to do so, Samantha,

(00:27):
Are you slipping on anything?

Speaker 3 (00:29):
Yeah, I'm keeping it real casual with my coke zero? Yeah,
coke cherry zero.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
Yes, not a.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
Sponsor, not a sponsor, not a sponsor. Well, currently, what's
a more refnerator? Needed a little pick me up and
this is the best way to do it for now
without coffee.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
Oh that sounded so sad.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
Well, it's like after twelve, so I can't have that
much caffeine. I have to learn that amount of caffeine.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
You know.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
I've got a lot of rules in place around Yes, yes, yes,
well I am sipping a hot Toddy because guess what,
everyone I have COVID?

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Did you get COVID? I got COVID?

Speaker 2 (01:11):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
I love if we're celebrating this instead of like.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
Oh no, I go fine, I really do you?

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Oh no.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
The last time I got COVID, I talked about this
and it's like it's also sad.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
I treat it like a vacation.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
I'm like wearing fuzzy socks.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
I know. But I did go to bed at nine
thirty last night.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
But I had a very intense Star Wars dream, and
I kid you not, I was like flailing about and
I pulled a muscle.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
Was it a good dream? At least it was a
really good dream. Okay, okay, no rigretts, my friends.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
But yes, I'm really buffed because last year I didn't
get COVID and like everyone around me did.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
Yes, we did this year.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
The new booster for the COVID vaccine comes out at
the end of the month. Yeah, and I think the
reason I didn't get it last year is because you've
gotten that cod. I'd gotten it right before and it
was so close. But alas here I am.

Speaker 3 (02:21):
So you have no symptoms.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
Are you just tired?

Speaker 2 (02:24):
I'm tired, and I'm like the same as last time, sneezing.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Oh, you know, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
That's my thing.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
You were in good spirits because before before you uh,
maybe you're just faking it.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
You right before you were more tired. You've seen more
tired than you do now.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
Honestly, I feel energized and I don't know what to
think about that.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
I really really don't.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
The op for you, I don't know what it is,
but yes, I'm very fortunate.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
I feel pretty good.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
But that does lead me into what I wanted to
talk about today where I got COVID, which was Dragon con. So, yes,
this is I've talked about it before, but in case
you don't know, this is a convention that's been held
in Atlanta since the eighties over Labor Day weekend. It
is now spread where like used to be Friday to
Sunday and now it's like Thursday to Monday.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
But Wednesday's trying to get in there too.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
We saw all the tiktoks and like Wednesday was happen? Like,
what is happening? You missed that on a full day Annie.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
I know next year, Samantha, we're gonna have to work
even harder to cover.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
It's gonna be a two week thing from.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
I know. So as for usual, after I go and
I do stay at a hotel room there, which I'm going
to have more information about later, because I had some
fun times.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
Oh, I'm just.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Going to recap some of my favorite things that I saw.
I will say we were discussing before. I like to
guess what I think is going to be the big costumes,
and I was guessing.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
I guess a couple. I would say.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
There wasn't like a breakout costume. There was a lot
of fallout, which is I thought there would be. There
was a lot of Olympics. Oh there there was. There
was a raygun break dance off and it was very
funny and I kind of felt bad at how much
I laughed at it, but it was very funny. There
was a huge SpongeBob contingent.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
So I saw muscular squid Yes, handsome squid Word.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Handsome Squidword was there. No, that's why he's called is
he that's his name.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
I just know muscular. I call him the muscular because
he's not handsome.

Speaker 1 (04:43):
He's freaking out he.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
I love this, Okay, so I love SpongeBob. I know
a lot about SpongeBob. Handsome squid Word is an episode
where squid Word basically goes wild on cosmetic surgery.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
And there was someone dressed as a handsome Squidford there
and he was amazing. He was a hit. Oh my gosh.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
There was someone dressed as Pearl, who is mister Krabss
whale daughter. But the reason I liked her so much
is that she for the like bill of the whale.
She used like a laundry basket.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
Oh really yeah, yeah, it was super cool.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
It was super cool.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
But then there was a group of like really obscure
SpongeBob references, and one of them was my favorite. He
was a Schmitty urbon Man Jensen.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
He was number one. If you're a SpongeBob fan, you
will get it.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
But basically he's a dead body with like the two
beer the hat with the two beard cans on the side.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Oh he has a name. Yeah, I just assumed he
was like an extra in the restaurant all the time.
When i'm they have like crowd moments, so I do. Okay,
this is my nanny era where the kids loved SpongeBob,
so I hated it. I guess it was my mid
twenties late twenties when I was a nanny with the

(06:14):
kids and they loved SpongeBob SquarePants and they would watch
it all the damn time. And it was during the
era where I don't think it was ever new. I
think it was reruns at this point, but they were
still relevant, and so I would hear it and I
would see clips of it. So it was one of
those things that was constantly going. And I know any
of the mothers or any caretakers out there, no, when

(06:35):
you have something running constantly, not because you were watching it,
but because the other the kids are watching it, it
starts driving you crazy. So for me, even though I
don't hate it, and I would rather than watch that
than like children and children's shows where they freak me out,
like Teletubbies or something. Thank god it wasn't that or
badly made sitcoms on Disney Channel like I would much

(06:58):
rather have watched SpongeBob. But any way, in that letter,
I'm like, I don't know what's happening. Is this actually
funny or is this an existential crisis that children don't understand?

Speaker 1 (07:11):
Is it right?

Speaker 3 (07:14):
And so therefore it's just driving me crazy. But with
that so I know bits of SpongeBob, I can't this
is all new to me because I don't. I think
I remember the squid Worth Yeah episode, I think so,
because these are all are any of those Spongebobs new?
Have they kept going?

Speaker 1 (07:33):
They?

Speaker 2 (07:34):
Some of them are new, but most of these costumes
are from season four and earlier.

Speaker 3 (07:39):
Right, So that would have been way back when Right.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
Started.

Speaker 3 (07:44):
I'm not making this up. Great, great, right am I? Okay,
So so I do know of these things, but still like,
I would have never known this dude's name, and I
didn't know he had actually part oh.

Speaker 1 (07:56):
When my friend and I saw him, we both avoided
in a shout.

Speaker 3 (08:03):
Is there a movie? Does it come back? Or is
it just the retro thing that people just like, yes,
let's do this again.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
There are still new shows.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
There is, in my opinion, even a creepy CGI show
that's called SpongeBob.

Speaker 1 (08:15):
Summer Camp or something.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
So they're still making new stuff, but I think a
lot of it is a lot of that stuff isn't
as regular as what was happening in the early SpongeBob days.
But yeah, there was a lot of SpongeBob costumes this year,
and I went back and watched SpongeBob afterwards because I
was just like, I gotta go watch that episode so good.

(08:51):
There were a lot of what we do in the shadows.
I went one day as laslow when at the Gay
Pride Parade, and that's when I got my ribbon. I
got a ribbon in the wild if you don't know.
A lot of conferences like this, they hand out ribbons
that are sort of u Sometimes they're like achievement based.

(09:13):
Sometimes they're quest based, like if you go find this,
you get a ribbon. Sometimes it's just if you give
somebody something. Sometimes they're literally just impressed with your costume.
But I got this ribbon because she liked my hat.
She's a cowboy hat, rainbow cowboy hat that lights up,
so yeah, checks out. It's the phrase from the Day

(09:33):
the Earth Stood Still, like the first thing the alien says.
And I was reading all about it because of course
I was like, what what does this mean? And it's
it's uh. They one of the most famous sci fi
phrases of all time.

Speaker 3 (09:48):
Cool.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
That was cool, I will say. I was talking to
my friend Katie, who's been on the show. I have
a lot of friends Katie it's been on the show.
On the show, she likes anime a lot. She was
picking out a lot of anime stuff, and sometimes I
wonder if I'm not picking out on big cosplay contingents
because I just don't know that fandom. So I think

(10:11):
she said a lot of has been hotel, which is
not anime but I don't know it, but she said
that was there in force, and a bunch of anime
random stuff I saw. There were a bunch of Taylor
Swifts and Travis Kelsey's. There was a really good everything
everywhere all at once, like huge group that had like
every It was awesome nice. There was somebody dressed as

(10:36):
Doug Demodome from The Fairly Odd Parents. And if you
don't know Doug Demodome, he like wears a white tuxedo.
He's kind of imagine how I like Colonel Sanders, but
he wears a huge top hat and people don't know
him say this tall hot guy. And even during the parade,

(10:58):
the Dragon com parade, they were like, it's the best costume,
and one of them said the tall hat guy, it's
Dug Demodome, sir. Of course that was a really good one.
You could just see his hat like movie through that course. Yes,
there was somebody dressed as Sean from Hot Ones and

(11:20):
he had all the hot sauces. Oh yes, yes, and
he was handing out little mini hot sauces. That takes money,
I know, and I thought this was really clever. There
was somebody dressed as something from Dungeons and Dragons. This
all happened very quickly on the elevator, and he was
handing out little things with fireball, because that's a spell

(11:44):
in Dungeons and Dragons fireball.

Speaker 1 (11:47):
Yeah, that was clever. I liked that a lot. Uh.
And then there were a ton of memes, so many memes.

Speaker 2 (11:57):
There were people dressed as the beer bottles Servesic Crystal,
which was the thing that I think in May went
viral about these old Star Wars commercials where they like
put in serves Crystal.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
That's funny. Yes, that was really good.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
I was bummed because I wanted to carry around to
Servesic Cristal, but I couldn't find any, and then I
was gonna make some, and then I didn't do it.

Speaker 3 (12:27):
But next time, next time.

Speaker 1 (12:29):
There was somebody who was.

Speaker 2 (12:33):
Charlie from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia with the conspiracy.

Speaker 1 (12:36):
Board, which is a popular gift.

Speaker 3 (12:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
Nice, that was good. There was a really good Ratatuia
I wanted to send you, Samantha. It had the like
chef's hat and it had the mouse inside was moving
and there were lights so it was like a shadow pattern.

Speaker 3 (12:52):
Where Yeah, I think I saw that.

Speaker 1 (12:55):
It was really really cool I liked that. There was
a Mandalorian clicker.

Speaker 3 (13:02):
Yeah, you never did send a picture of that because
I never saw it, but I saw so.

Speaker 2 (13:08):
I saw the helmet when I checked in, and then
I saw it again when I checked out. I never
saw it, but it was like the the Mandalorian's helmet,
but on one side, the like the cordeous EPs was
busting out.

Speaker 1 (13:25):
That was a good one. I saw not one, but
two Dune popcorn buckets.

Speaker 3 (13:31):
Yes, And when she said that to me, is life size,
not like the costume, not like just carrying around literally
they were dressed as doing popcorn. I was like, what
is this. It's hilarious.

Speaker 1 (13:44):
It was very good.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
There was also a Deadpool and Wolverine popcorn bucket.

Speaker 1 (13:50):
Other yes, there was.

Speaker 2 (13:53):
There was a Han Solo cup, which is an oldie
but a gooddy, somebody wearing the hot dresses Han Solo
wearing a sold cup nice.

Speaker 3 (14:00):
And then cicadas a whole really yes, yes, I saw that.
I was like, what is this.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
There was a bunch of people dress as cicadas and
they had really funny signs and they would just like
kind of scream at you when you would walk by.
But one of the signs said like, I woke up
after seventeen years for this, and one of them said
I'm a screamer, and he would just randomly go ah.

Speaker 3 (14:27):
It was so good. I wish I could say in
your reaction when they scream at you.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
Oh my god.

Speaker 2 (14:31):
But they also had like the regular non screaming cicada sound,
but they were that was a good costume.

Speaker 3 (14:41):
That's awesome.

Speaker 1 (14:42):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
And then there was a group dressed as the menu
people from the Menu Oh, yeah, which I thought was
I was like, oh, I wouldn't have thought of that,
but cool.

Speaker 3 (14:51):
Did they dress up as a small scene.

Speaker 1 (14:54):
I think somewhere more stresses this, more seed you.

Speaker 3 (14:56):
I think that would be the most recognizable scene.

Speaker 1 (14:59):
Right right, right right.

Speaker 2 (15:01):
I think the person who dressed is oh, gosh, I
can't remember name, but Anya Taylor Joy's character.

Speaker 1 (15:07):
Yeah, she looked like her, so I'm pretty sure.

Speaker 2 (15:10):
Like I just was, oh, and then I saw, oh,
it's a whole group.

Speaker 3 (15:15):
There's a group of them.

Speaker 1 (15:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (15:17):
I guess that would only really work if you had
a group of them, because just seeing her be like,
oh look.

Speaker 1 (15:22):
Ale, yeah, but no, it was a whole crew.

Speaker 3 (15:28):
I love when they come in cruise, like that, and.

Speaker 2 (15:31):
There are some costumes that really work far better if
you're in a crew.

Speaker 1 (15:36):
Right, I did see that.

Speaker 2 (15:38):
Being said, I did see a really good evy from
the Mummy last year. I saw like the whole group
yeah from the Mummy, but I still I know the
Mummy enounce that.

Speaker 1 (15:47):
I was like, I know you, I see you.

Speaker 2 (15:51):
Yeah, and then that brings us to me yeah, Disco Luke.
So this was a really fun year because there I
had a lot of pleasant interactions. There's a guy who
I met the first time I dressed this Disco Luke
and was just so be amused by the whole thing,

(16:12):
and I explained everything to him and all of this,
and now every year he comes up and finds me
and it's like, oh my god. But this year he
came up to me while I was talking to a
bunch of people and he was like, I will never
forget this cosplay because of you.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
This is Luke Skywalker and.

Speaker 3 (16:26):
Everyone was like it is, Yes, he's educating the people
for you.

Speaker 1 (16:31):
I love it.

Speaker 3 (16:33):
Oh.

Speaker 2 (16:33):
And then there's another guy who I run into every
year who does like Luke Skywalker cosplays, and he came
up and we had a great conversation about it, and
he was telling all of its people about it.

Speaker 1 (16:46):
I love that. And then there.

Speaker 2 (16:50):
Was a guy who came up to me and he
knew it exactly what it was, the costume down to
the year.

Speaker 1 (16:56):
He was like, is this from that nineteen seventy eight
German interview? Like, oh my god, was ready?

Speaker 3 (17:04):
It was ready.

Speaker 1 (17:06):
It was so great. Wow.

Speaker 2 (17:09):
Because I've gotten I get a lot of like, are
you the Golden Snitch?

Speaker 1 (17:14):
And then wonder Woman.

Speaker 3 (17:15):
I guess, okay, the Golden Snitch. I can kind of
see that.

Speaker 1 (17:19):
Yeah, I flutters yeah. And then I guess Wonder Woman
wore something similar in the newest one. Oh really, I think.
But a couple of people came up to me were like,
Wonder Woman. I was like, it's actually not. It's a
disco loop Skywalker.

Speaker 2 (17:36):
And then at one point I the Dragon Conway is
a lot of times you end up waiting for people
and then they never show up. And at one point
I was waiting for people and I was by myself
and a bunch of people came up to me, and
I think, like, when you're alone, people feel more comfortable.
Oh yeah, like coming up. But I had I had

(17:57):
a whole slew of people coming in asking about it,
taking pictures.

Speaker 1 (18:01):
Love is great.

Speaker 3 (18:02):
Of course they did.

Speaker 1 (18:06):
It was great. I love it. It does need repair though.
It took some hits.

Speaker 3 (18:11):
Oh really costumes, it's hard with the wings on the helmet.

Speaker 2 (18:18):
Somebody knocked it really good.

Speaker 1 (18:21):
Do some repairs. It needs even further care. I feel
like every year I'm like, I'm gonna take care of you,
and then I don't.

Speaker 3 (18:30):
It is impossible. It's such a crowded space it is.
There's so many things happening. You have adult beverages and
lots of friends.

Speaker 1 (18:40):
It was packed. It was all right, so just some
random other stuff. I have to say.

Speaker 2 (18:55):
I felt like an expert this year at dragon Con.
I normally feel like pretty good about it, but she
was like, damn.

Speaker 1 (19:01):
I got this down.

Speaker 3 (19:03):
When why are you not an expert? Like this.

Speaker 1 (19:08):
Was a smooth okay.

Speaker 3 (19:09):
It better, even better, No no hiccups, no dram No.

Speaker 1 (19:15):
No, not really I did so.

Speaker 2 (19:18):
As you know, getting a room at Dragon Con is
a whole mess. Uh, It's like, it's really difficult, and
so I had a through various reasons. I had an
extra hotel room and uh it was just gonna sit
empty essentially. But I ended up finding someone who I
knew who wanted it and it all worked out.

Speaker 1 (19:38):
Yep, that sure did. So that was awesome. It was
a dragon Con miracle.

Speaker 2 (19:45):
And then yeah, I saw a bunch of a bunch
of friends, a bunch of people hadn't seen in a while.
I liked that they all seemed to know, like, oh,
this is where we'll find her.

Speaker 1 (19:54):
There was a lot of a lot.

Speaker 2 (19:56):
More ribbons this year getting handed out, and a lot
my friend Katie made a lot of bracelets friendship bracelets,
and that helped with the ribbon exchange.

Speaker 3 (20:06):
Oh nice, So how many did you end up getting?

Speaker 2 (20:08):
Again, I only got two, but she got like ten,
plus my friend Horissa got like six.

Speaker 1 (20:16):
Maybe people were getting a lot. I would say.

Speaker 2 (20:21):
I talked about this last time, but I think it
continues to be more diverse.

Speaker 1 (20:26):
It was a lot more diverse this year.

Speaker 3 (20:28):
Nice. I did see a great TikTok of all the
black women like who love cosplay and it was a
pretty good group in The costumes were awesome.

Speaker 1 (20:38):
Yeah, yeah, it was. Yeah, it was definitely. I love it.
I'm happy to see it.

Speaker 2 (20:44):
But they were they do like these dragon Con does
these like get togethers and you can just see like
everyone dressed is this or everyone from here? And it
was a lot a lot of diversity in it and
I loved it.

Speaker 1 (20:58):
Yay. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (21:01):
I'll also say I have fiction has really got mainstream
because they have ribbons.

Speaker 3 (21:09):
It is. I think it's on everybody's at least in
there like peripheral, like they know it's there, yes, and
they have like they're starting to wonder how it may
have impiltrated their own life because like if you're figuring
out some of the things that laid love the movies,
the comedy, any of the books may have started as
fan fiction. M h. It's a lot.

Speaker 2 (21:31):
I love it, it is, but it was just it's
just interesting to me because I was like, oh, this
is a ribbon, okay, well, and then I say, this
wasn't a bad thing, but it was. I've talked before,
I think last year about like working on my boundaries
around food and stuff like that. And another one is
I've become very much like, go do what you want

(21:52):
to do, and I'm going to do it I want
to do, And sometimes that can lead to some tension
just because it's understanding. Yeah, I guess because to me,
I'm a very like yeah, go do what you want
to do. But to other people that can feel like,
but I want to do it with you, but because
there are schisms now and my my friend group's fandoms,

(22:16):
it just ain't going to work.

Speaker 1 (22:18):
It is not going to work out.

Speaker 2 (22:20):
And this is something I want to come back and
revisit in a future episode. But that was I think
it was fine, but there were definitely some moments of like,
you know, I won't be going.

Speaker 1 (22:29):
To that, do not ask me to. Yeah, but it
was good.

Speaker 2 (22:38):
COVID and all here I am and had a really
really good time in the costume cosway has always was
the best part and it was amazing.

Speaker 1 (22:46):
People are so creative and I love it.

Speaker 3 (22:48):
I'm glad you had fun. I'm sorry you have COVID.
I'm glad it's not too harsh.

Speaker 1 (22:55):
Yeah, I mean it's one of those things where.

Speaker 2 (22:59):
I mean, even before I when I was telling you,
like this probably is you take a certain like.

Speaker 3 (23:05):
It's almost like forty sixty and sixty is definitely going
to get it.

Speaker 1 (23:09):
Yeah. Yeah, but so.

Speaker 3 (23:13):
Far as long as you're staying at home now, everybody's
doing their treatments if they need it, and hope everybody's safe.
And catching it really like meaning like knowing that they
got it, not catching it really you know.

Speaker 1 (23:24):
Yeah, I told everybody I did the text of you know.

Speaker 3 (23:28):
Nobody know it has arrived. COVID season is here. I
am positive your your you need to check. I'm glad
you have fun.

Speaker 1 (23:36):
I did, thank you, yay. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (23:39):
It's funny because every year, and like before it, I'm
a little dreading because it's just a lot of work
and like getting in there, into the hotel room and
all of that, and then you're always tired afterwards. But
