Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hey, this is Annie and Samantha and welcome stuff.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Never told you a production of iHeartRadio, and welcome to
another edition of Happy Hour.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
As always, if you choose to drink or whatever.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
You choosing to do, do it responsibly. H Samantha, what
are you up to?
Speaker 3 (00:28):
You know?
Speaker 4 (00:29):
Because of the sudden cold dip we have. I just
was sick a couple of weeks ago, and the change
of weather always get me sick. So I am drinking
a lot of vitamin C immunity buster type of things
right now. I know they're not the greatest, but zinc
and all that have been known to help. So I'm
taking some precaution. And so I have a mock tael
(00:51):
of like bubbly water h and the immunities though, because
I'm like, yep, need it, I'm already snuffy.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
Oh no, I have a hot Toddy. It is very cold.
Speaker 4 (01:06):
Yesterday, not to complain, but for us just below sixty
come friend.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Yeah, I will say.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
The nice thing about it is I had some of
the best sleep I've had in a while because I
got so composing under the covers, and lately I've been
waking up and all the covers are like off the
bed and it's not that hot, Like I'm sure what's
going but I slept through the night nice.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
Yeah, I know, it's just comfortable.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Yeah, I do have Okay, So this is our annual
Life Day episode.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
Happy Life Day, Life Day.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
I cannot believe it's already Life Day if you do
not know, if you've somehow avoided it for all of
these years, even though it has gone really mainstream. This
is a Star Wars Christmas essentially, this is Star Wars Christmas.
It's on November seventeenth. It comes from the hard to
explain a Star Wars holiday special.
Speaker 5 (02:07):
I would like to say, you're not missing out. If
you don't know, I would disagree, but that's fine. But yes,
it's it's a it's a thing I celebrate every year.
I actually really love it.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
But the reason this is related to what you're talking about, Samantha,
is this year I'm going to a strip performance, a
Star Wars performance. Strip's back, not a sponsor. But I
have a friend who is supposed to go with me,
(02:41):
good friend of the show, Katie, who are going to
be talking about in this episode, and her boyfriend is
really sick. And I said to her, listen here you've
got to take some precautions because live' day is coming up.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
It's important we can together.
Speaker 4 (03:00):
You been wearing masks around the dude man is.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
Wearing a respirator. She's taking it seriously. Gotta do what
you gotta do. Life Day is important.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
But she also said he's really sick, like they're kind
of sick.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
You see it, and you're like nope, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
no thanks no. Which's just a reminder everybody a lot
like COVID.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Still COVID still a thing. The flu is serious. Yeah,
so take care of yourselves. But yes, she she is.
That was like the first thing.
Speaker 6 (03:35):
We both were like, oh no, not his health, but
oh my god, I did say, such a show. Hope
he feels better soon, but don't forget about life day.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
But we have priorities.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
We have priorities, and life Day is one. It only
comes once a year, although it kind of comes twice
a year.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
I would say, they made the fourth and you have
so many revenge of the revenge of the thing, those
things that happened.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
This is the May yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, but anyway,
this is the winter one.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
Okay, o, get well, well say it like that.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Yes, so I am really excited. It does fell kind
of strange. I know it doesn't again, I just time
is so odd. Now it doesn't feel like it's already
Life Day, but it is. And speaking of time feeling strange,
I had a great idea for this episode. I was like, oh,
(04:36):
I cannot wait to talk about this, and then I
fell asleep and I can't remember what it was.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
Oh I do that all the time.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
I was so I remember thinking this is a this
isn't and it wasn't like I woke up from sleep,
because those ideas are usually kind of bad when you
think about them later. This was like an ID I
had and then fell asleep and it's lost. That's lost.
Hopefully it'll come back. I do want to come back
(05:04):
and talk about Star Wars and religion, but that's that
could be a whole episode. I don't know what to
do about that one. But so I thought about doing that,
but I was like, no, let's just do something lighter.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
For Life Day.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
So I wanted to talk about imagination, Star Wars and imagination.
So it's my good friend Katie. We grew up as neighbors.
I was so excited when she moved in next to
me that I my mom made me wait to call
(05:38):
her because I was just like, we have to hang
out right now, and she said, you know they're they're moving.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
You can't give give her some time.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
And we had been we had been enemies previously, but
now we were friends.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
And also it was just at the time.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
I would love other listeners wrote in about this because
I think about this a lot, actually more than I
probably should because I don't have kids. But at the time,
my neighborhood was there's there like to walk to your
neighbors was like a deal, Like there weren't that many
people around. So having a kid my age move into
(06:17):
my neighborhood was so exciting because and also our house
was far away from anything else, so it's not like
I could easily get somewhere the place i'd moved from. Previously,
I could bike to places or even walk to places,
but more off a bike, so it was like a
big deal that she was moving in. I was so
excited and then guess what, she loved Star Wars.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
It was so exciting.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
Because, as I've said before, and I actually was talking
to a friend at the show Joey about this on
the episodes that you missed Samantha about New York Comic Con,
but off the mic, we were talking about how, in
a lot of ways, Star Wars was a maybe our
first introduction to gender dynamics as society sees them, because
(07:06):
it's like you were, quote a girl, you have to
play Lea or you have to be you can't be
anybody else. You can't be Padmet. You only can be Padmet.
You can't be anybody else. And my brothers, as I've
talked about before, even though they liked Star Wars, they
always made fun of me for liking Star Wars, like
it wasn't cool for me to like it. And I
(07:29):
just remember my older brother actually got in an argument
with my mom about it where he said she likes
it too much. Like anyway, I was so so excited
to have this friend who was a girl and who
also loved Star Wars, and who also had two brothers
who kind of made fun of her as well.
Speaker 1 (07:50):
And we read all of the books.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
There was this like Young Jedi series of Obi Wan
and Obione's kind of like cute. We were so into
that and we would this was mostly me, and I
honestly think she was just being a good friend and
supporting me. But we would I would be very determined
to get I buy all the Derrito's. Again, none of
this is none of these things are sponsors. I would
(08:15):
buy all the Doritos because you might win a thing,
or I would play the claw machine and spend way
too much money to get like an Anakin Skywalker toy.
And she would be right there with me doing all
of these things. And she saw and Star Wars episode
one came out, which we were the right age four.
We saw it so many times in theaters. My poor
(08:36):
dad he was like, how many more must we? But
he loved movies, he love stars and he took I
mean he took us a lot. So hats Awso now
he could have said no, we probably should have at
some point, I know he put the foot down eventually. Yes, yes,
(09:09):
Like looking back, we just had so much fun and
we were very imaginative kids. I'm sure like most kids are,
so I'm not unique in this way. But we would
like she built, we would build Jedi training courses. So
we had like this rainbow yarn, and we would make
(09:30):
all of these things we had to jump over or
crawl under, and we use like couch cushions to and
Yoda was our teacher and he was very very strict
and demanding, but we were really very very incredible. Samantha,
Oh you know, we're leaping over this yarn all kinds
(09:52):
of things. She had kind of a big basement, so
we Yeah, it was like the place she went to
get away from the parents, you know. Yes, and we
would have on the TV. We would be playing the
Duel the Fates the song. Oh yeah. And then it
(10:12):
upgraded when I purchased a stob light from Party City amazing,
and it had different like colors of lights you could
put on it. So we would turn we put on
the red light and we'd have the lightsaber battle. But
you know what, we didn't have the lightsabers, so we
(10:34):
painted PBC pipes. Yeah, and we just I still have fun.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
It was green. We would have these battles, you know,
we would coordinate and it was we would this would
just be like the most fun, the most fun.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
And through all of this, this is how I created
my character that I've mentioned before, Tara Polaris. She is
a fictional character that I created, and she was the
best Jedi that ever existed. She was so cool, and
my mom's friend made me a Jedi robe, and I
(11:16):
like made the outfit.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
I still happened.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
It's still back there, and I was very quick to
correct people who would say, oh yeah everyone Kobe and
I would say, no, it's Terra Polaris.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Way better. That's a great name. It's a good name, right.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
I want to use it in like a real situation.
And in fact, you and I were talking about going
to an extremely fancy restaurant in Atlanta, and I was
thinking about using the name Terra Polaris there and just
putting on an effect. You know, I think Terra Filaris
(11:56):
needs to come back out.
Speaker 4 (11:58):
I'm just the fact that you wanted to use is
at this very fancy restaurant, very fancy.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
It's like, yes, she is getting me. I don't.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
But I mean, I guess if she wasn't a Jedi,
that name sounds like somebody you would.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Meet at a restaurant like that. Shit, Yeah, I think so.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
I think it sounds like somebody who has has some
kind of strange science venture that you've never heard of.
Speaker 4 (12:29):
Oh see, I'm imagining it being a lisleman.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
So you see immediately through it.
Speaker 5 (12:36):
Okay, that's Okay, she uses at the hotel.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
I still think fantastic name.
Speaker 4 (12:45):
I mean, it is a good Star Wars name, but
I definitely would have thought this sounds like a Star
Wars name.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
Yeah, Oh well, because it's that good exactly.
Speaker 2 (12:55):
I'm just saying that is a funny critique that comes
up a lot with Star Wars that I think I
both am tickled by how much people do this and
annoyed when it gets too serious. But it wouldn't you
wouldn't say good fun I think it's funny. But how
many things in the Star Wars universe are specifically like
Earth or like a yeah, literally you in Hell? And
(13:19):
I'm like, so you have Christianity and I don't know,
so a.
Speaker 4 (13:26):
Different language of like yes or like a Latin word
that's like just references to that.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
Yeah, yeah, which I mean the Star Wars is one
of many. I actually went to a panel about this
at Dragon Con once, about the difficulty of writing in
science fiction or science fantasy when those things don't exist.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
So how do you equate, like, yeah.
Speaker 4 (13:52):
What is the punishment? What is it a punishment?
Speaker 1 (13:54):
What is an insult? Exactly?
Speaker 2 (13:57):
I think see you in Hell's that's like one of
the best examples, but yeah, sure. Oh and also I
talked about in the mar Jade episodes fictional women around
the world march Aide, their weddings were very Christian and
a lot of the books, it's like, so we're still
on this idea interesting. Yeah, definitely definitely, which by the way,
(14:21):
me and my friend Katie we loved mar Jaide and.
Speaker 1 (14:25):
We loved all the books and all the video games.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
But yeah, I looking back at that that I just
treasure it so much, like that that time of creativity
and imagining these things, and that I felt like I
could create this character and it would be my helping character.
Speaker 1 (14:44):
And she was better than Obi Wann.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
I mean, that's obviously I'm honestly jealous of younger me
in that sense, like wow, for you, she knows, she knows. Yeah,
And and from that, I was just thinking about all
of the creativity you see again not just in Star
Wars but in fandom in general. But like the stuff
(15:08):
I've written for fan fiction that has been both the
comfort and sometimes something that I'm really proud of, like
I wrote something really good and so that it's still
contributing to my creativity in that way. I think that
it's also on the flip side, it can be difficult
(15:33):
because difficult might be too strong a term, although I
have struggled with it, so maybe not. Because Star Wars
is such a big universe and there's been so many
creators and it's been oh retcount and changed, and it's
every two years, the completely changed everything. You take this
(15:53):
creativity and like your head canon of what you think happened, which,
by the way, a lot of people don't think Life
Day is canon, even though it has been made officially cannon.
Speaker 1 (16:02):
But if it.
Speaker 2 (16:03):
Upsets you, you know, you kind of cut that out
of your little memory and it's not part of I'm
not part of your canon.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
I mean, that's one of the best things that came
out of that special So the Failey's keep that, you know,
I didn't what's her name?
Speaker 1 (16:23):
The author?
Speaker 2 (16:24):
Yes, oh yes, But it can be kind of difficult
when so many there's so many different creative head canons,
(16:45):
and they might impact yours whether you want them to
or not. And I run into this a lot in
fan fiction where I'm like, I don't know where we
all decided this one thing was true. That's called fanelect
or fan canon. There's another word, but it means I mean,
like we all decide this one thing is true and
it's not, and then people just assume it is. And
(17:07):
that can be really hard if you don't agree.
Speaker 1 (17:11):
With that fan canon.
Speaker 2 (17:14):
And everybody else has taken it as truth and is
writing a bunch of stuff that kind of directly shapes
against what you like. And that's been a real battle
and a couple of the last couple of years, just
because so many things have happened, some of which I've
talked about on the show and the Star Wars fandom
(17:35):
that a lot of my fan fiction authors have left.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
They're gone, and.
Speaker 2 (17:41):
They were one of the ones, only few ones that
were writing these things. Now I feel like I have
to continue. I felt like this was about Marching Band too,
because everybody dropped out of Marching Band. Oh yeah, and
I didn't want to stop. I didn't want Marching Band
to go away. But I didn't really like Marching Band.
But I stay in it because I didn't want it
to die out. And you know, I still love I
(18:05):
love writing pan fiction, don't get me wrong, But sometimes
I'm like I would like to read more of it. Yeah,
instead of being the one that's like, but I do
like it, and I have my Life Day story already written.
It's like it's more sad and creepy than I I
was hoping for. Usually on Life Day I try to
do a brighter story. Five Apparently in twenty twenty five,
(18:32):
it's like, what if the Force ghosting didn't know they
were a Force ghost though?
Speaker 1 (18:42):
Yeah, yeah, but I guess.
Speaker 2 (18:47):
I guess Ultimately, Life Day does encompass a lot of
what I'm trying to say. There's a beautiful creative strangeness.
There's this imagination people take these things and run. But
also on the other side, if that is you got
the holiday special that some people just hate it and
(19:08):
they are so upset them so much. It was made
and I can't fault them for that. I do think
that the holiday special is one that is easier to
ignore than perhaps other bigger things that I dislike. But yeah, uh,
I think that in general, even if you don't like
(19:29):
the holiday special in Star Wars fandom, at least Life
Day has been accept Life Day has.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
Been Life Day is okay. Lego said it was okay.
Legos said it was all right. The grandpa watching porn,
that's a little much.
Speaker 2 (19:47):
It's are all true. Listeners, it's all true. If you
haven't seen it, I didn't believe it. I know I've
told the story before. I won't go into it again.
But the first time I saw it, I was shocked
and I knew it was and even so I was like, Wow,
what happened there? And we've talked about what happened there
(20:12):
in past episodes. So if you want to, if you
want to know more about the history of Life Day,
you can just search in our catalog and we have
done at least four episodes. I think I hope listeners,
even if you have no intention of watching it, I
hope it's fun to listen to. I mean, I remember
before I was before I was super into Star Wars
(20:35):
after because like I've said, I have like ebbs and
flows throughout my life with it. But with the pandemic,
it became my thing. And that's when I saw that stuff.
You should know had an episode about it, and I
enjoyed listening to it, even though I had no idea
about any of this.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
So perhaps it's that whole train wreck it is that. Yeah,
I can't look as I enjoy it. I'll be watching
it this week. I know you will, I know you will.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
Yes, Well, hopefully my friend Katie won't get sick. Hopefully
my other friend Katie won't get sick because she's also
supposed to go. Hopefully I won't get sick. Hopefully it
all works out and we have a good life day.
Maybe I'll report back at him now I've been to that.
I've actually seen this show before and I loved it
so exactly.
Speaker 4 (21:29):
Yeah, I remember you really did love it.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
Yeah, it'll be fun, It'll be fun. Well, happy life day.
Thank you have the best time. Thank you so much,
Brodie got my outfit picked out.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
But yeah, listeners, I would love to hear from from you,
not necessarily a life day especially, but also just that
kind of imagination part of childhood.
Speaker 1 (21:53):
What kind of things did you do, because.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
Me, me and Katie would really create whole worlds and
we had all these games we made up. Uh so yeah,
I would just be interested to hear anybody's fun experiences
with that, anything interesting you came up with, any any
characters you went with went ass during Halloween. Please let
