Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hey, this is Annie and Samantha, and welcome to Stephan
Never Told You a production but iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
And today, because I just can't help myself, I am
bringing back the first episode I did.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
On Life Day.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Yay.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
I'm so excited. My friends have been texting me all
of these decorations they're gonna bring, and some of them
are so funny. I cannot I can't believe it, but
I can't. Oh man, I'm very very happy.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
I can't wait to report back honestly about how it goes.
Because it's tomorrow as we record this. But yeah, especially
since we're moving into hopefully joy but we all acknowledge
stressful holiday times that I'll just give you a taste
to be Arthur, you know, And that's that's great? That yes,

(01:13):
well I think so. So please enjoy this classic episode.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
Hey, this is Annie and Samantha. I don't come. It's
definitely Never Told You production of iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
It is time for another happy hour as I always
drink responsibly if you.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
Choose to do so.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
And as this one comes out, it is Thanksgiving here
in the US, but we're actually gonna talk about a
different holiday.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
Yeah, we try to arrange it to be like perfectly
in sync, but we just could not get it together enough.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
But yes, yes we are Jackie out life day. But
before we get into that, Samantha, what are you sipping on?

Speaker 1 (02:04):
I am keeping it.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Chill and easy because I think I'm just trying to
take it easy on myself talking about the subject which
I understand the context, but the reason behind it I'm
still a little irritated by because it was one of
the worst things I've ever witnessed in my life.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
Yep.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Ever, so with that, just start to my four ninety
nine four dollars ninety nine cent bottle of wine the
Veno Bear Day prom Trader Joe's at keeping it refreshing
and chill and pretending like I am not here.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
Perfect well, I have enough enthusiasm for the both of us,
I promise you do, so I am.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
I am drinking basically a gin and tonic.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
But I put blue Contra in there, says quite blue,
Samantha can see. Yes, I was going to put Grandee
in there, but my grenadine bottle is stuck.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
It will so it.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Was gonna be like a reddish purple color gold blue yep,
and it's out of my Boba Fett cup that my
mom gave me, or when I went to college, she
was like, you need dishes, and she gave me all
these Star Wars dishes.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
I appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
So, yes, we are a bit late on this one,
but we did want to talk about it, or I
wanted to talk about it, and Samantha is letting me
a life. Day is typically celebrated on November seventeenth, and
it's you know, kind of called the Star Wars Holiday
Christmas Holiday, I guess. And I wanted to talk about

(03:41):
it because I love it. I'm thankful for it, the
Star Wars Holiday Special.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
It's just given me so much joy. I watched it
last night and I was laughing, Please, I just need to.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
So the first time we decided to watch this, this
was my first run through of all things Star Wars,
because yes, I did not watch it until literally twenty twenty,
which I would have been forty about to be forty,
And I was like, you know what, because Annie loves it,
because my partner loves it, and because if I don't
watch this, I will be forever confused by the many

(04:16):
times we're going to address anything Star Wars related. Let's
go ahead, let's watch all of them. And it did
include this, and I watched about half of it. Two
thirds of it I can't remember. And I was so
disturbed by the entirety of the holiday special. I did

(04:39):
miss the author I do feel bad about that part, however,
watching the random was.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
It porn that the grandpa was watching?

Speaker 3 (04:50):
Watching the dancers come out of nowhere with I'm collusion,
the very high Luke, the very hi Leah, the very
uninterested hungry. Yeah, all of that made up for what
is happening. I've been drinking today. I think it was

(05:10):
one am at this point I was like, Okay, I'm done.
I'm done, and I left and I'm like, what is
going on? And I went to bed because this is
what I do. I'm like, I'm out, I'm done, tapping
out and I came back I think, like, was it
forty five minutes later? And you guys were rewatching it
for this second time? And all I could think was

(05:32):
what is wrong with you?

Speaker 1 (05:33):
And walked away.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
That's a fair question. Those people don't go out of
their way to watch it again. I have watched it many,
many times, repeatedly.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
Yes, But oh my god, the fact that you went
to a back to back run through.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
Was like, excuse me.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Well, your partner never seen it before, and he was like,
is this a fever dream I'm living?

Speaker 1 (05:54):
And I'm like, no, it's reality. Friend. I think we
just we got to talk talking. I think it played again.
I'm not sure we actually chose to do it, is
what I'm saying.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
Okay, that's what you'll say.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
I walked in.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
I was like, what, Well, at one point we were
watching like The Making Up the Empire Strikes Back, which
was amazing, but we definitely that was like an audit
play thing.

Speaker 1 (06:14):
We didn't seek it out.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
So I think like it just came on again and
we were like, well, who we are.

Speaker 3 (06:23):
I will say though, for any of the specials, and
I'm don't want to keep We're going to go back
to the Life Day because that is itself. Was like, yeah,
I'm cool with that. I will be down for any
of the e Walk specials that we watched. Oh yeah,
I was a fan of those.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
Okay, Teek, you really liked Teak.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
I really loved to Teak so much.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Like no one listens, so we're talking about that's okay,
that's okay. Yeah, So I did rewatch this last night.
And I also found Disco Lute recently, which I can't describe.
You have to look it up, but it's basically a
German special market Amimal did where he's dressed up in
his gold disco outfit, and I watched it last night
for the first time and I was dying laughing. So

(07:07):
I'm making that costume. I'm already working on it. It's
going to be like the jewel in my crown of Star.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
Wars look Skywalker outfits. And I didn't want to say.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
Recently a cookbook came out about I mean, I guess
it's not about Life Day, but most of the recipes
in there kind of Life Day inspired.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
It's called Star Wars The.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
Life Day Cookbook Official Holiday Recipes from a Galaxy Far
Far Away by Jin Fujikawa and Mark Sumerk, and our
friend and coworker Holly has been on the show. I
was trying to get Instagram ideas life a day ideas
for foods that I can make, and she did not
fall through, and she was going through this cookbook.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
So if you're interested, the food was great.

Speaker 3 (07:49):
Oh well wait wait, wait, not what the Wookie was
making because I have no idea what was happening there,
Holly was made looked great.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
And I think the Banta surprise is one of the things.
I'm not sure.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
I'm sure it's better from the cookbook than what is
happening on the show. All right, So briefly, Life Day
is a Wookie celebration of peace, harmony, family, joy, and life,

(08:28):
typically held at the Tree of Life on the Wookie
home planet, which in the Holiday special is, without explanation,
seemingly in the middle of the stars.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
Anyway, The tree.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
Was typically decorated with crystal Life Day orbs, and just
like Christmas, there are traditional foods, decorations, and gift giving practices.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
The Wookies wear red robes.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
And when the Empire enslaved the Wookie population, it took
on another meeting, and when the Empire fell, people across
the galaxy started celebrating Life Day. The holiday was first
introduced into the Star Wars Holidays Special in nineteen seventy
eight and has since been revisited. The Lego special came
out recently Watch on Disney Plus, though of note, the

(09:11):
Star Wars Holiday Special is no longer canon. Disney was like, nope, no, no, no,
so it's part of legends, So the holiday itself exists
in both canon and legends, and I believe b Arthur
her character is canon.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
Some of the things from the Holiday Special art they
pick and choosing.

Speaker 3 (09:28):
I'm very confused about the cannon thing, but keep going.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
Yes, well, this is also when Boba Fett was introduced,
which is probably most people's favorite part of it. And
it's really funny to me because you can't watch the
Holiday Special anywhere, like you have to search for it.
And George Lucas once said if he could destroy every
copy with a hammer, he would, but they.

Speaker 1 (09:45):
Have pieces of it on Disney Plus.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
And the one that I'm thinking of is the Boba
Fett introduction.

Speaker 1 (09:51):
So they're like, not the whole thing, but this part,
this part's okay. So yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
The Holiday Star Wars Special debut in nineteen seventy eight.
It's a variety show that really defies explanation. I always
tell my friends, just as was told to me, you
cannot describe how bad it is. You really have to
witness it for yourself. Do you understand.

Speaker 1 (10:14):
It's bad? It's really bad.

Speaker 2 (10:15):
And one of my favorite text messages exchange I've ever had,
I actually took snapshots of it. It was the first
time I was watching this and I was texting my
friend Katie like what and she was like, yeah, I know,
I actually did. Last Christmas. Me and my mom watched
this together with my little brother and it was one
of our the most fun memories we've made together, in

(10:39):
my opinion, in a long time, because it was so
funny and she was just laughing and laughing.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
She's like, what is this and I'm like, no one knows, all,
no one knows, but yeah.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
So these variety shows are really popular at the time,
and I was reading interviews with some of the people
who made it and they're like, no, it was good
at the time.

Speaker 1 (10:57):
I'm like, hmmm.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
They are making a documentary about it, which I cannot
wait to watch. It features Jefferson Airplane Circasila, the first
appearance of Boba Fett, yes Art Carney b Arthur, a
shockingly different Mark Hampbell in appearance, a visibly high Carrie
Fisher who sings I'm a visibly angry Harrison Ford and
so I'm really creepy Wookies because it's centered on Chewbacca's family,

(11:23):
his wife Mala, his son Lumpy, and his dad Itchy
and he's trying to get home to celebrate life day.

Speaker 1 (11:31):
But mostly it's just this family. In fact, the first
ten minutes is just them speaking Wookie with no translation.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
Nor Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, according to the creators. Yeah,
I've heard some people said it was enjoyable at the time,
like when they watched on TV. I've heard other people say,
like even as a kid, they're like, what is this?

Speaker 1 (11:54):
But yes, George Lucas hated it.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
To the point some people think that's why he financed
Empire Strikes Back without a studio.

Speaker 1 (12:01):
AKA.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
Perhaps the Holiday Special gave us that amazing movie, so
maybe we should be thankful for it. So my big
thoughts when it comes to women from this Holiday Special
is number one, Mala, who is Chewbacca's wife, is underappreciated
and she needs She could be better than Chewbacca.

Speaker 1 (12:20):
Oh justice for Mala for sure. Oh yes, she is
at home.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
She's trying to make these She's like watching this Julia
child thing and trying to make a pand surprise, She's
making the cookies.

Speaker 1 (12:31):
She's doing all this stuff.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
And once she get she has the grandfather who is yes,
watching porn in the living room, and then the son,
who I'm sorry but is really annoying, kind.

Speaker 1 (12:44):
Of scary looking too. His face is a meme.

Speaker 3 (12:48):
His actuals are a gift in itself.

Speaker 1 (12:50):
Yes, I believed played by a young woman.

Speaker 2 (12:54):
But yes, yes, she's at home doing all this, and
Jewbacca is just never around.

Speaker 1 (12:59):
He abandons her.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
He does, and you have to think when you're watching
these movies, like I loved you Abaka.

Speaker 1 (13:07):
Sure, but he's got a family at home. He's not
ever talking about them or checking it out. I'm just saying,
m hmm, I'm filled with rage.

Speaker 2 (13:16):
Me and a friend we have a joke fan fiction
where Mala, you know it, gets attention from Lando and
then because apparently originally Harrison for Han Solo was supposed
to date a Wookie, so get some attention from Lando
and then later from the Mandalorian and you got the

(13:38):
Mando name.

Speaker 1 (13:39):
Like right there, Mala Lando Mando. See makes sense.

Speaker 3 (13:44):
Does it?

Speaker 1 (13:45):
But yeah, yes.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
Samantha, yes, but yes we could have had a romantic
situation between Han Solo and a Wookie.

Speaker 1 (13:55):
So I guess we should also be thankful that that
didn't happen.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
I don't know she needed that. I don't know if
we should be thankful for us not seeing her getting
some affection.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
You're right, you're right, you're right. That would have been
an interesting triangle love triangle. And then there's some brief
like moments that I just thought were interesting where there's
kind of this assumption of he throughout of like I
can't tell if that's just bad writing, very well could
have been, but just sort of always going for he.

(14:25):
There is a moment in the Boba Fette part where
there's an advertisement for this medication that they need.

Speaker 1 (14:32):
I know it sounds wild, but yes, this is a
plot line in it.

Speaker 2 (14:35):
And there's a woman in a bikini on the advertisement,
which always catches my attention. Of course, the porn is
longer than you would think. Yeah, and it's yes, perhaps
enough set on that one.

Speaker 1 (14:52):
And then yes, b Arthur is, in my opinion, the highlight.

Speaker 2 (14:57):
She is running this bar, this can Tina and Tattooine,
and she is just so good at closing stuff down.
Like this guy comes into the bar and he's flirting
with her and like being really like handsy, and she
just has like a quick comeback for everything he says.

Speaker 1 (15:15):
And is so kind of dismissive of him.

Speaker 2 (15:17):
Because he thinks that because she says, you know, like
thank you come back soon, that that was it meant
she was in love with him. But she's like, no,
I'm sorry for whatever you think that I meant that
you think she's really good And then just to run
this like unruly bar and she does it so well
and she knows all the names. But then yes, she
also sings for about five minutes as she's trying to.

Speaker 1 (15:41):
Close the bar down.

Speaker 2 (15:44):
But yeah, I mean, it's definitely I'm glad that she
is portrayed as like, yes, she this is annoying behavior
and she's shutting it down. But it is one of
those things where I'm like, wow, this isn't too out
of place today men being all.

Speaker 1 (15:59):
Creepy up a bar. Uh.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
Yeah, but those are my thoughts some of my thoughts.
I had to limit my time on this one. On
Life Day, holiday, special, happy whatever you are celebrating. If
you're celebrating anything happy, maybe just random day, who knows
if happy fall for life day? Oh happy rain, happy rain,

(16:25):
happy whatever it is.

Speaker 3 (16:27):
If it's unhappy day to you as well, stay inside hi.

Speaker 2 (16:31):
If you need to be safe, take care of yourself.
We love you We're thankful for you. I was very
appreciative this life day of you the listeners. Yes, cheers.
