Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hey, this is Annie and Samantha and welcome to stuff
one Never Told You production of iHeartRadio. And because I
can't help it, and because there are a lot of
Star Wars things happening right now, we're bringing back some
(00:26):
more Star Wars classics, including this one, which I wasn't
going to bring back, but I caved because it's more
this is more recent. We usually try to wait longer
before we bring back a classic. This one's a year old,
but it is on the Sabine Wren and I wanted
to bring it back because the trailer for Soka just
came out. Oh yeah, and we saw Sabine in it,
(00:47):
and we got to see some of her lightsaber skills
that she learned. Oh, and rebels Sabine, it's not Mary
Elizabeth Wednesday. It's we've talked about her in this episode.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Okay, it's not the half Asian woman, is it?
Speaker 1 (01:02):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Oh? Is it? They are?
Speaker 1 (01:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Oh, I'm so excited.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Yeah, I'm sorry.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
I know obviously need to go back and listen to all.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
That's so exciting. Yeah, it is exciting. It's very exciting.
People were very excited about the trailer, so in preparation
for that, which is I think August, so you've got
some time, please enjoy this classic episode. Hey, this is
(01:33):
Sandy and Samantha and welcome to Steffan Never Told You
production of iHeartRadio. And welcome to another sub sub segment
of Women Around the World, fictional women around the World
and further Women Around a Galaxy Star Wars edition. Yes. Yes,
(01:59):
and it's you know, good timing because as we record
this as you hear it, if you're listening to it
when it drops, as they say, we're entering like May
the Fourth Be with You, Revenge of the Fifth all that.
But we're recording this on April twenty sixth, which is
Zeno Morph Day. So happy Zeno Morph Day. I don't
know what that is, but I'm gonna nod. Thank you Alien. Okay,
(02:22):
it's Alien Day. Oh okay, so excited. The woman we
are talking about is Sabine Wren, who we mentioned in
our episode on Stine as a past wielder of the
Dark Saber. So you can see that episode for more
(02:42):
context about the Dark Sabers whole deal, because she did
play a role, right and that whole thing. As per Hush, Samantha,
I'm gonna run through this and you know, Paul, if
you have any questions, thoughts, concerns. This one did get
complicated and it's kind of out of order, but I
think it will make sense. I just got confused. Oh no,
(03:03):
I was tired when I did the first draft.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Sabin is someone I kind of know because I did
watch all Rebels as opposed to anything else. So that's
she's the one that I do love because she has
some Asian representation.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
And I love it.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
But okay, confuse me now that I feel like I
know it.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
Yeah, that's my goal. No, I think it will make sense.
I think I just got a little That whole dark
savory thing can really bog you down if you try
to keep track of all that stuff. But anyway, okay.
Sabine was voiced by Tayas Takar, and it was just
recently announced that Natasha U Bordizzo has been cast to
play Hair in upcoming Star Wars live action stuff. My
(03:46):
theory is she's going to train the Mandalorian how to
use the dark Saber, but we'll see. Sabine Wren was
a Mandalorian woman first introduced too many of us in
the animated show Rebels, which took place in the Star
Wars timeline a few years before the events Rogue One
and a New Hope, and then a little after Return
of the Jedi, just like a little peak. So Sabine
(04:07):
is really into art and spray paint and went on
to provide some inspiration for the symbol of the Alliance.
She briefly became the owner of the Dark Saber. Yes,
but let us step back. Sabine was born on Mandalor
to Clan Wren of House Visla. Her mother Ursa, was
a member of Death Watch during the time that Mandalor
was in chaos after Satene's murder in the collapse of
(04:30):
the new Mandalorian government towards the end of the Clone Wars,
which we talked about in that Seteene episode, and it
was a whole thing, So go check that one out
if you want to learn more about that. Sabine's armor
that she forged when she got older was very unique,
and she inherited a night owl's helmet, which if you
haven't seen Rebels, you saw it on the Mandalorian It's
just kind of got like a distinct pattern on the helmet.
(04:53):
She started her career at the Imperial Academy of Mandalor,
where she followed orders without question, though she did study
up on some distractor, which got her into some trouble.
As part of her time there, she built weapons that
she believed would be used for peace. It's kind of
more complicated than that, but we'll say that she named
one the Duchess after Satene and used best guard to
(05:14):
reinforce it, which is a big no no. And this
allowed for it to destroy best gar armor and thus
the people wearing it Mandalorians, something that was viewed as
blasphemous to Mandalorians and yes to her herror, these weapons
were used against her people, including her family. This left
her racked with guilts and she left Mandelor, an action
(05:36):
that led to her being branded as a trader by
the Empire and by her mother, father, and brother, who
her mother was the leader of Clan Wren. Her family
paid a price for her desertion. Her father was held
hostage by the Empire, while her mother and brother had
to prove their loyalty by serving the Empire. Sabine was
able to destroy the weapon she created, but the Empire
(05:58):
was able to rebuild it using her research. For a while,
she worked as a bounty hunter alongside Catsuit on Youo,
but she was eventually recruited to be a member of
the Ghost Crew by Harris and Doulah and Jedi Canaan
are Caleb from Bad Patch? Why is Yeah?
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Why is he Caleb and Canaan? Because I was very confused.
I keep saying the two different names, and I was
very confused.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
He's he kind of did a whole like, I'm leaving
this identity behind. I'm becoming someone else.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Uh oh, okay, So he just changed his name.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
Yeah, uh yeah, pretty much. Simple. Yeah, I know that
confused me too, don't.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Is it the same person or is it not?
Speaker 1 (06:36):
Okay, yes, it is unless they're going to pull some
wild twists. Spoiler dead It's it's tragic. I mean, we're
going to talk about that. I guess I should have
put a spoiler alert. I spoiler alert for rebels because
some men wori and stuff. But yes, Harrison, Doula and
(06:56):
Jedi Canaan Jerris. She joins up with them after her
and Anyo had a falling out. Through this the being
fought with them against the Empire, and she used her
art to inspire hope and rebellion. She was on the
Empire's Most Wanted List and was known as the Artist,
and on the Ghost she was spect her five. So
it's interesting because a lot of these characters we were
talking about from these shows everybody hated in the beginning.
(07:21):
Everybody hated Ahsoka in the beginning. People didn't like it
Saban because they thought she was like, I don't know,
like being into art makes her not interesting or it's
very silly. Yeah, it didn't make any sense. But most
of these characters did end up becoming fan favorites. But
I just thought that was interesting because I hadn't heard
(07:41):
actually of that kind of controversy of like, but she's
a painter, Okay, interesting, interesting critique. Sabin and the Ghost
(08:05):
Crew went on all kinds of missions and caused all
kinds of mischief, framing some enslaved peoples, going undercover as
an imperial to recruit pilots like Wedge Antilles, inspiring people.
So being surprised, Yeah, she really did inspire people with
her art. There were reunions, betrayals. Working with Leah or Ghana.
That was cool. Running into IG eighty eight when she
was attempting to track down Darth Maul. The one time
(08:27):
ruler of Mandelor. She comes across the Dark Saber on Dathimir,
the planet of the Knight Sisters. At first, she avoided
the responsibility that comes with the Dark Saber leading a
planet and a people, because again, have you win some combat,
then you're supposed to rule this planet and lead the
people of Mandalor. But another Mandalorian and Canaan, convinced her
(08:48):
to train with it to unite the Mandalorians and convince
them to join the rebellion against the Empire. She convinced
her family that the Empire screwed them over and helped
them kill the Imperial by story of Mandelor Gar Saxon,
though she's said this in the exchange. He said, I'll
never yield to you, girl. You'll have to kill me,
And she said that might be the Mandalorian way, but
it's not my way, not anymore. It's true dramatic. It
(09:11):
was dramatic stuff. She supported her family during the Mandalorian
Civil War before returning to the Ghost Crew just in
time for Yes Caanaan to die, though she still helps
free the planet Lothal where he died. Before Canaan died, Yes,
she did train with him in Ezra in order to
wield the Dark Saber, something she resented due to the
(09:33):
baggage of her family and Mandalore, and she's just besieged
with self doubt. She is gifted with some anti Jedi
weapons and is able to beat Ezra, but is defeated
by Canaan, who tells her that while those weapons might
help her, then my binies. She needs a lot more training.
She admits to Ezra she doesn't want responsibilities of the
Dark Saber, that she was disgraced to her family. Canaan
(09:54):
and Sabin are able to work more effectively on her training,
and she confronts long hidden emotions back she felt about
working the Empire, abandoning it, her family's estrangement, and how
she hurt her planet through this. She is able to
master the Dark Saber. So again, as we said, that's
a teen one, the Kyber Crystal, you have to work
with it. You have to otherwise you're just fighting against
(10:15):
it and it's never never gonna work correctly for you.
After her success, she reunites and reconciles with her family,
though they first attacked her. Her mother was a hard cell,
expressing disappointment that her daughter joined the rebellion, and that
the Dark Saber is just a symbol. And on top
of that, because she found it and didn't win it
in a fight, she doesn't have a rightful claim to it,
(10:36):
which is that whole thing that's going on right now.
She said she was disappointed in how Sabine had turned
out who. Sabine discovers her mom is planning on selling
out her Jedi friends and the Dark Saber to the
Empire and Clan Saxon. However, Clan Saxon sold her, her mother,
and the family out for being traders. With the help
(10:58):
of the Jedi and some allies, the family come together
to fight Clan Saxon. Sabine briefly wielding a lightsaber. This
is when she refuses to kill her challenger in the
dramatic quote from above, as is Mandalorian tradition, but her
mother does it instead to protect her. Through this, she
gained the respect of her family. She stayed behind to
help find the true leader of Mandalor. Clan Wren later
(11:21):
provides support to the rebels, in part because her mother
was moved by the loyalty the friends had to each other.
Sabine and her brother rescue her family in Sabine Joy's
forces with bau Katan krees Ah to destroy the weapons
Sabine created once and for all. Sabine is captured and
pressured to instead enhance the weapon, but she programs it
to target stormtrooper armor instead. Sabine gave Bokatan the Dark Saber,
(11:46):
assuring her that she was the rightful leader, and the
Mandalorians who witnessed this pledged their allegiance to Theo Katan.
After that, the crew of the Ghost joined up on
Yavin with the Rebellion at large. They partnered with Sagara
for a minute, uh and they were involved in that
whole battle. And then at the end of Rebels, she
(12:06):
joins up with Ahsoka to go look for Ezra who
went missing in wild Space with Throng. So yeah, see
how that goes.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
So this is supposed to be right before we see
Darth Mall.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
No, Darth Gideon.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
Who is that dude from Mendelorian Moth Gideon Ythskidia so close?
Who has the Dark Sab? So this is after that
is before then, right because Bogaton lost it to him, yes,
and Bogaton was trying to go back and get it
for the Mandalorian.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
Guide instead, Yes, exactly, And I believe they actually haven't
really detailed how she lost it. They've talked about it,
but I don't think I think they're going to do
a bigger thing.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
So they tinted at it, but they never really fully say.
We just know she's really angry, and then she fills
the after a man Lurian gets it and didn't know
what to do. Yeah, you can't take it a second
time as a gift because she already took it one
time as a gift.
Speaker 1 (13:08):
Right, So that's kind of the bigger why she was
so mad is because so being gave it to her,
you're supposed to win it in combat. Technically, Sabine didn't
win it in combat either. She found it, I believe,
and it was a further insult to injury that she
lost it to an Imperial moth Gideon in a fight.
(13:28):
So he won it, but she kind of there's kind
of this talk around like the reason that happened is
because they didn't do it correctly in the first place,
and so that's why she was so determined it has
to go this way. I will not do this again.
No one will respect me, you know, one will follow
my leadership and then what's already happened right then the
Mandalorian gets it. I think, I don't know, it's gonna
(13:52):
be interesting. There's a lot, a lot of threads that
play here, right give it to Groogu. No, no, no, no,
that would be interesting though. That's how he did.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
For a second, Yogu has his own lightsaber, right, but
then he gave it out, he.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
Gave it up. I think I have a theory that
because I said the person tarbi Isla who made the
Dark Savior was the first Jedi Mandalorian. So I think
they're going to do something like that with Grogu. But
I really don't know going to be a Mandalorian. Now, Hey,
he took the he took the armor. God, is that
(14:29):
what that means? Yeah? I think I mean he shows
that path. I don't know that means they're gonna like
teach him to be or going to die. He's gonna
die either way, because no, onen't really no, it doesn't
turn out well for anybody's about That's.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
Why so many, so many spoiler alerts. I apologize this
has been a conversation that Annie and I have had before,
so therefore I'm trying to catch up again.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
Yes, so.
Speaker 2 (15:02):
My bad for that ending.
Speaker 1 (15:04):
No, it's not good. I have so many thoughts I
want to like really vent about some of my theories
and thoughts. So I'm into it. I will say one
thing I love about Sabine. She's pretty, like, she's cool,
and she's easy to She's very friendly and easy to
talk to you. I really love for her in Ahsoka's friendship. Yeah,
I like that they had each other's backs and she
(15:27):
liked Sabine was like, no, I'll go with you.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Sabine was one of my favorite characters thus far. Again,
good representation. Yeah, b she wasn't just waiting for Ezra
to come about. She was kind of leading that movement
on her own.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
So I appreciated that.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
Yeah, she's a badass, And just because she's just s
graffiti doesn't mean I don't know why that in the
Gates her anymore would have been different if she had
been the brother who had been that character.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
I think so, I personally think so. The people were
complaining about how she changed the hair hair color, and
of like, Okay.
Speaker 2 (16:05):
She's galgalctically punk.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
So I think she's got a lot of good character arcs.
I mean, we really ran through a lot of stuff
in there, a lot of drama. So yeah, I am
interested to see the live action representation of her and
how it goes and see what happens in the story.
But well, in the meantime, Ahsoka is next. I promise,
(16:27):
I promise, But this is the end of our sub
sub sub segment. If you have any suggestions, I promise,
We're gonna move out of Star Wars territory soon. I promise,
not in May, though not in May, but after that,
please send them our away. Our email is Stephania mom
