Speaker 1 (00:02):
Hello again and welcome back to kids Bible stories. Today's
story is called Fireflies and Fish, Good Light or bad Light,
And this comes from Psalm chapter one, nineteen, verses one
hundred and five through one hundred and twelve and John
chapter eight, verse twelve. Our first Bible reading will come
(00:25):
from Psalms. In this Psalm, the writer takes each letter
of the Hebrew alphabet to write about God. It would
be like saying, I'll write about God's word from A
to z AVCD, E f G, A, amazing B. God
(00:49):
is big. You get the idea. Okay, let's jump right
into today's episode. Your word is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path. I will do what I
have promised and obey your fair laws. I have suffered
(01:14):
for a long time. Lord, give me life by your word. Lord,
accept my willing praise, and teach me your laws. My
life is always in danger, but I haven't forgotten your teachings.
Wicked people have set a trap for me, but I
(01:36):
haven't disobeyed your orders. I will follow your rules forever
they make me happy. I will try to do what
you demand forever until the end. Now we turn in
our Bibles to the Book of John and it says
(01:59):
when when Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, I.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will
never walk in darkness, but we'll have the light of life.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
Well, that is it for our story today. But before
we go, let's think but what we just heard. So
today's Bible readings were shorter than our usual stories because
we need more time to talk about them. Let me explain.
At school, one of our teachers was teaching about fireflies.
(02:40):
Say out loud, what is neat about fireflies? Stay light up?
That's right. On a warm summer evening, you can look
out and see magical flashing lights around the trees. The
fireflies begin their beautiful light show. We enjoy watching. Do
(03:03):
you ever try to catch some? We do too. Do
you know why they light up? Well, one reason is
for the male, the boy firefly, to attract a female,
a girl firefly. The light is used to draw something
to it and not cause harm. Even humans, we enjoy
(03:28):
seeing such dazzling lights. Think about it. At Christmas. We
delight in seeing red and green Christmas lights pierce through
the dark night, twinkle on the tree, or we enjoy
watching it glowing fire. So light usually is good and
(03:50):
we like seeing it. But after we learned about fireflies,
my daughter spoke up and asked, a light, hmmm, what
do you guys think? Maybe, well, there are some that
(04:11):
are not good because they aren't true. They are a
trick and lure us into things that can be harmful.
Let me show you. Have you ever read The Poutfish. Well,
in that book, there is a fish that lives deep down,
(04:32):
down down in the dark ocean. He is an anglerfish.
The anglerfish has a long growth that sprouts from its
head and curves down towards its face, and on the
end of it is a light. The anglerfish uses this
(04:56):
light to lure other fish and sea creatures to war
towards him, and then chump oh, they become his lunch.
So this light is a trick. It's good for the
anglerfish and what he wants, but it is not good
(05:20):
for any of the other sea creatures. In today's readings,
we heard Jesus say.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me
will never walk in darkness, but will have the light
of life.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
He is the ultimate best light, real light, unlike the
anglerfish's fake light that helps him but harms everyone else.
Jesus's light is always true, always good. His light draws
us to him and offers peace, love, forgiveness, and guidance.
(06:07):
We also heard the magnificent light Jesus offers us helps
guide us. It said your word is a lamp for
my feet, a light on my path. Did it just
say the lamp that lights our path are the shows
that we watch? No? No, is it our friends? No?
(06:36):
Is it God's word? Yes? Yes, that's right. You can
always test if it's a good light by seeing if
the Bible says the same thing. I want you to
remember that in this world, you will come across things
(07:01):
that want your attention that try to be a brighter
light than Jesus. Maybe it's the toy commercials telling you
to buy their shiny new things, or the TV shows
encouraging disrespectful behavior. Sometimes these lights want to guide you
(07:24):
and act like they are the best light, but they aren't.
Only Jesus is the one true light who wants what's
really best for you. Well, that is it for our
story today. Thanks again everyone, and as always, buy for now.
