Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is long Shots. Here's Wes Reynolds.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Welcome in. It's long Shots with Kelly Boglin and Wes Reynolds,
your Tuesday edition of Around the World. But it's a
bit different because we're not going far west. We're just
going out to the East Coast and Myrtle Beach, two
PGA Tour events. We do have a signature event this
week with the Wells Fargo Championship and the brand spanking
new Myrtle Beach Classic, with an alternate event going on

(00:32):
this week since there is a signature limited field at
the Wells Fargo, so we thought we'd get this one
out for you on Tuesday. Matt and myself did not
make any bets here, Wes, I know you did make
a couple. How you doing though, first, my.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
Friend, I am doing well. Kelly, good to be with you.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
Yeah, Around the World, even though it's one hundred and
seventy five miles away from the other PGA Tour stop
is Wells Fargo of course in Charlotte, and this and
Myrtle Beach for what is called now by the Tour
in additional of that, Yeah, I always call it the
alternate event, but either way, it's the same principle. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
Yeah, as if they weren't screwing me up enough already
with signature elevated, what were the other there was another
term I'm missing from you. Yeah, we'll signature now, right,
signature and at it is that, that's what you're saying.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
Yeah, additional and yeah, and because of all that, you've
obviously had a lot of field changes this week in
one hundred and thirty two player fields. Some of the
guys withdrew because they got into the Wells Fargo like
like Taylor Pendrift did last week winning the CJ Cup Byron.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Nelson Ben Coles, same thing.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
So some of these guys got in a Wells Fargo,
so obviously they withdraw from this and then other different Yeah,
like a very a lot of movement, I would.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
Say, in this field.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Yeah, yeah, definitely if you're betting golf this week, be
aware for both fields because, like Wes is talking about one,
any additions or guys withdrawing from one means usually more
that are going into the other possibly, So definitely, if
you were looking at stuff, especially before this week, but
even in the past couple of days, make sure you
are double checking fields. At the top of the odds

(02:12):
board over at DraftKings we have Aaron Van Royan, Daniel Berger,
and Ben Griffin all at twenty five to one. This
is definitely an interesting odds boord to look at. Davis
Thompson twenty eight to one, bo Hostler thirty to one.
Then we drop down to thirty five to one, where
you'll find Matt Wallace, just Allower, Alex Smally everybody else
forty to one or longer West. Where do you want

(02:34):
to start brand new event? I think this is it's
probably a good opportunity for us to just talk about
handicapping process. This is, you know, brand new event. So really,
I know you didn't go heavy with it. Matt and
I kind of stayed away completely. As you hear us
talk about every week on long Shots, we are very
dedicated to strokes gained stat information and stuff like that,
and we don't have for a course. Usually my first

(02:55):
instinct is to stay away, especially if it's not a
you know, a AG or a big field event like that,
but even just I think for some golf betters out
there West, when you see a brand new event like this,
how are you approaching it?

Speaker 3 (03:10):
Yeah, if you're gonna bet at a lot of it
is kind of like hunches, and you'll see that when
I get to my selections. I went, I went a
lot of like, you know, maybe some signs in recent form,
because you know, you don't really have any data to
really model where you have several years an event and say, okay,
you know this is gonna matter here, this is not
going to matter. But new event, so obviously a new

(03:32):
course the Dunes Golf and Beach Club seventy three, Go ahead.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
You're modeling recent form still or did you not really
do any of that because I.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
Looked at it. I just looked at recent form basically
is what I did.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
And there's a lot of what we do for people
out there that don't know it is. It's kind of
I always call it scouting the course first. It's scouting
the course. It's reminded a lot of the BGA War
courses we see every year, so some of it we
kind of already have notes saved on and everything like that,
but there are changes to the I mean, there's changing
these courses almost every year, it feels like now. So

(04:05):
I mean a lot of my processes first kind of
scout the course. What do you think is gonna matter here,
what type of player fits best here. Then we kind
of go and run our different stat models and stuff
like that. Then we kind of gives us a recent
form idea. Then we're usually comparing that to a course
history and stuff like that. That's the part that you
don't have here, Eddie, course history information for where these

(04:25):
guys have played, you know, played at the past. You're
not really dealing with much, right.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
Yeah, not really.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
You know, you're just kind of looking at the course characteristics,
which I'll get to here. Dune's Golf and Beach Club
seventy three, forty seven par seventy one, Robert Trent Jones design.
Reece Jones's son did some recent renovations over the years.
That is down there in Myrtle Beach. Second golf course
ever built along the grand strand of Myrtle Beach.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
It's hosted some.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
Champions Tour events and you know, a Women's Major way
back in the nineteen sixties, so first time hosting like
a real PGA Tour event. If you look Bermuda Greens,
six thousand average square feet, it's going to run eleven
and a half to twelve on the stint meters to
kind of middle. It is along on the Atlantic coastline,
but there's only like one or two holes really like

(05:14):
right off the water, like right off the beach here.
The signature hole is the thirteenth par five called Waterloo six,
six and twenty five on the yardage.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
So it does play it at par.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
Seventy one here for the pros par seventy two for
the members. If you look at it, you know it's
it's kind of like maybe a longer harbor town, I
guess if you want to call it that what we
see in Hilton Head with narrowish fairways, but you don't
really have to club down as much off the tee,
so you can use the driver a little bit more,
you know, just the just the three part or just

(05:48):
the two par fives or three part fives, I should
say rather I mentioned the big long one at number thirteen,
so you know, new course here. So we obviously don't
have a ton to model. I would think you know
that the approach numbers are going to be important every
single week, so if you want to look at that.
I didn't really delve too much into that. I just

(06:08):
kind of went off feel a little bit and a
little bit of uh, you know who's been making cuts recently,
because this is obviously a lesser quality field with you know,
all the highly ranked guys at the Wells Fargo this
week in Charlotte. You know, still some good players in
this field, but a lot of guys looking for an
opportunity here because this might be the last chance for
some of these guys, and it will be the last

(06:30):
chance to get in the PGA Championship because they're still
they released the official field today, but there's still a
couple of spots left open, like whoever wins the Wells
Fargo if they're not already exempt, and then whoever wins
this event down in Myrtle Beach.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Right, Yeah, I like that. Yeah, I'm just kind of
looking at the course a little bit right now. I
do think it's it's interesting. This is it'll look appears
to be a bit more of a of a coastal course.
It is. I'm glad you brought that up, though, because
I think that is tough. I think it's tough to
to really factor in coastal conditions sometimes. I mean it's
when you when we know we have a pure coastal course,

(07:07):
it's really easy to just know that it's going to
be like, you know, allow for some chaos in your
handicap because you know there's you know, there's some crazy
stuff that could happen. I always find the ones where
I think people get tripped up on, Like I think
PGA National is a perfect example. And you know I
covered the Honda for a long time.

Speaker 1 (07:23):
Yeah that was.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
You know, you're a little bit further inland, so you
don't you're not getting the true coastal effects, but it's
still close enough that you could get some of that.
So I think it's just something to always be careful.
I think if you are handicapping golf out there, that
you really know the true location to some of these
courses like West is talking about that. You know, you
do get some get some of that are right on

(07:45):
the water, and then you're gonna feel those conditions way heavy.
Some are you know, even just ten miles in when
can make a big difference.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
Yeah, there are tree line holes here, so you know,
it's not like a pure coastal course by any stretch
of the imagination, or like you have most of the
holes on the water. If anything, most of the holes
are not on the water here.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
Yeah, So did you watch much a burger last week.
I mean, I know he ended up actually playing one
of his better tournaments so far. He's at the top
of the odds board. Any consideration for you this week
I did.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
I wanted a little bit better price, but a lot
of the market seemed to gravitate towards him, thinking Okay,
this may be the ideal spot where he can win,
and I certainly considered him, did not end up playing him,
though this week. I was hoping maybe he'd be in
like the fortiest range, even though this field really does
not have a true favorite.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
I was hoping that, you know, he would be there.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
But I'm not surprised that like Van Royan is up
there near the top of the odds board. He's won
these alternate events before, obviously won an event last fall
in the Fall series, so I wasn't surprised to see him.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
Or you know, Matt.

Speaker 3 (08:55):
Wallace, who ended up T four last week at the
CJ Cut Byron Nelson wasn't surprised to see him. One
of the shorter guys either, But yeah, this is a
wide open thing, so this is a little bit of
a dart throwing event. You're not going to be able
to do a lot of modeling or any type of
stat analysis here. So you just kind of throw darts
and maybe go on hunches and see if you hit one.

Speaker 2 (09:15):
I might throw a few, but I might throw a
few bucks on on Matt Wallace Man, that guy always
seems to play well in these fields that are just
the crappier.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
Yeah, won the Corrales Punakana last year.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
So yeah, yeah, perfect sample. I'm actually evr actually at
that long. It feels a little long. For twenty five
to way, he seemed he feels like by four the
class player of this field actually, of what guy's done
this season. But all right, I digress. West Wood actually
ended up on your car for this.

Speaker 3 (09:43):
Yeah, and look, playing these obviously smaller than what would
normally and usually do that for alternate events anyway, because.

Speaker 2 (09:50):
The will have our full Wells Form podcast out.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
Yeah that's why.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
Yeah, it's a little bit heavier this week yet.

Speaker 1 (09:55):
Yeah, it's a.

Speaker 3 (09:56):
Little bit of a crapshoot at this event. But I
started with Justin Lauer at forty five to one. He's
drifted a little bit or shortened a little bit. I
should say, twenty eighth are better in each of his
last five starts. T four at the last opposite a
field event back in the Dominican Republic at the Grauispooniicana,
was third and a weaker field this year at the
Mexico Open, fourth and strokes gain total six and strokes

(10:16):
game putting over the last twenty four rounds, so justin
lower forty five to one Matty Schmid fifty to one,
third in this field. Actually for stroke gaining total over
the last twenty four rounds, he was tenth in Puerto Rico,
eleventh in the Dominican Republic. Those were the two alternate
or additional events, whatever you want to call it, earlier
this season, so he can play well in these fields
that are drops in class. Also played his college golf

(10:38):
at the University of Louisville, which is the host next
week of the PGA Championship at Valhalla. So maybe a
little narrative play on Maddy Schmid. They're at fifty to one.
Another twenty three year old, Tiga Simikawa of Japan, former
number one world ranked amateur, has already won four times
on the Japan Golf Tour, twice as an amateur over
the last couple of years. Ninth last week at the

(11:00):
Iron Nelson, and that's what got him into this field
with the top ten finish, So Tiger Simakama fifty to one,
and then a couple Clemson boys. Since we are in
North Carolina, we're gonna take a couple of Clemson guys.
Jacob Bridgeman at sixty to one, rookie on the tour,
made six to eleven cuts this season, ninth in strokes
to getting total over the last twenty four rounds, and
then Ben Martin at seventy to one, another Clemson guy

(11:22):
who actually lives in Greenville, South Carolina. Fourth for approach
over the last twenty four rounds is Ben Martin, and
then kind of a hunch, Kelly Kraft eighty to one,
who hadn't played a lot this year, actually had an
injury in the offseason. Made his debut in March at
the Puerto Rico Open, missed the cut. Doesn't have his
full status on the PGA Tour, but two top fifteen

(11:44):
finishes in his last two starts. T eleven at the
Zurich in New Orleans. T thirteen at the CJ Cup
and the Byron Nelson. Second on approach last week and
also second tee to Green. So I thought Kelly Craft
eighty to one was worth a stab.

Speaker 2 (11:57):
Yeah, great, first name, might tail you on that one,
you know, I mean got male Kelly's That's that's where
you gotta look. Semmi Kawa Man's he's uh, he's had
some impressive moments from some you know, some of the
different tournaments so far this year. He's he's shot low
a couple of times. I just wanted to watch for sure,
fifty to one right now at DraftKings. I think that's

(12:19):
a good play like that. I might actually get involved
with a couple of these. Mike tail West on a
couple of these. I like some Kala, like Kelly Kraft.
I think those are good calls there. I'm gonna shop
around for VR numbers too. I might dig into that
a little bit. Him sitting mid twenties in this field.
I know the guy. I know the guy doesn't go
out there and win very often, but man, this field
is weak. He's at least put together some good tournaments

(12:42):
here this season. All right, cool, we run through them
all one more time, just quickly. What you bet what
you got on the outright card?

Speaker 1 (12:49):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (12:49):
Justin Lauer forty five to one, Maddy Schmid fifty to one,
Tigers Mikala fifty to one, Jacob Bridgeman sixty to one,
Ben Martin seventy to one, and Kelly Kraft eighty to one.
You know, could have maybe dug down from some real
deeper bombs here, but I kind of went just like
middle to medium longer shots this week.

Speaker 2 (13:08):
Yeah, I like it all right. Cool. That will be
your Myrtle Beach Classic preview tomorrow morning. As always, we
will have our full long Shots episode up. Make sure
to check back for that. Matt, Wes and I will
break down the Wells Fargo Championship. Check in for that
on Wednesday Mornings. Always is where you'll get the full
PGA Tour podcast from us. And this is Tuesday Tuesday

(13:31):
Fun Day with Wes and Kelly where we jump all
around the world and hit up some of these additional
events now additional Okay until tomorrow. Thanks for checking out
