Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio. We'll get to phone calls coming up. More
over unders. According to DraftKings, I gave you the Falcons
nine and a half. I don't think it changed after
last night. But we have the Texans, Patriots, Vikings, Chiefs, Broncos.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
They're over unders. We'll have that for you coming up.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
We did find somebody who had the Falcons taking Michael
Pennix Junior eighth overall in his mock draft. Hilt join
us coming up at the top of the hour. Joining
us now is the star of NFL Networks coverage of
the draft last night, The Rich Eisen Show on ROKU.
Also run Rich Run the charitable campaign raising awareness and

(00:45):
support for Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital. He's been doing
it for twenty years and you can be involved in
it as well. Fans are encouraged to submit their forty
yard dash videos on social media using the hashtag run
life like Rich. Well, I'd start with the Falcons there, Rich,
did the Falcons have a good night last night?

Speaker 3 (01:08):
I have no idea the Falcons GM did a mock draft?
Is that who you have?

Speaker 4 (01:11):
On?

Speaker 5 (01:12):
Later?

Speaker 1 (01:12):
Now? I found a reporter who had Michael Pennix Junior
going to the Falcons, and he came out on April fifth.

Speaker 4 (01:20):
So it's a.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Head scratcher to say the least, dan that they would
sign Kirk Cousins to a monster contract, owe him ninety
million bucks over the next two years, and then gets
somebody who clearly is going to be a starting quarterback

(01:43):
well before kirk cousins plan to retire as an Atlanta
Falcon could be realized. So it's a wild scenario done
this now twenty one drafts eighteen in person, never seen
anything like this one, Never seen anything like that because
we're always told by front offices, don't judge us on

(02:04):
our entire off season until you get to the draft.
You can't judge everybody just on free agency. Let's see
what the draft looks like. That is definitely something that
Dallas Cowboys would tell every single fan that they have.
And I don't recall a time where a team goes
and signs a quarterback, a veteran, to a contract that large,

(02:26):
with a no trade clause to boot and at the
same time clearly is falling in love with his replacement,
and that is truly unprecedented.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
What was the reaction one I was watching and Ian
Rappaport was like, they might there's a chance they're they're
considering Michael Pennis Junior. And I'm watching, I'm thinking, oh,
I think he means that their trade. Maybe somebody's trading
up to get Michael Pennix, Like why would the Falcons?
But your guy's reaction was.

Speaker 3 (02:59):
Yeah, it went from a dumb and dummers You're saying
there's a chance to reality and split second like that
was wild. We were all looking at each other as
it happened, sort of like really okay, And it's one
of those moments obviously on a broadcast where the needles
ripped off the record. But you have to also be
as respectful as possible, because you know, Michael Pennix Junior

(03:21):
didn't decide to be drafted under these circumstances in the
same way Kirk Cousins didn't decide to be drafted under
in the same way that he was drafted in DC
just a couple of rounds later, after the Commanders chose
a quarterback second. Overall, that's the only moment that could
even be remotely close to something like this In the

(03:43):
twenty you know, some odd years that I've been fortunate
to have the chair. That's the cousin's been involved in
both where he was the other quarterback in but the
first quarterback wasn't a veteran signed to a monster contract.
It was a second overall selected guy. In RG three,
we were all just again just knowing, all right, this

(04:04):
is the moment. But Pennix is so talented he's worthy
of the eighth overall pick in the draft. I mean,
Kurt Warner thought he was better of a prospect than
Drake May and he had him, I guess, rated higher
on his draft board. If there's such a thing for
Kurt and so you have to understand why Pennix is

(04:26):
being drafted eighth overall. He is worthy of that pick.
While also talking about the unique circumstances in real time.

Speaker 1 (04:33):
Give me the other head scratcher that jumps out, I don't.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
Know if they're they're really well. I mean, it depends
on how JJ McCarthy performs. So if JJ McCarthy performs
well in Minnesota, has a season, if he does get
a shot to start Week one with Sam Darnold being there,
has a season that we think he at least I
could you know, I am talking through a cell phone

(04:58):
right now, is zooming with you, and the the phone
protector cover says, Michigan beat everybody on it. So obviously
I'm a little biased when it comes to JJ McCarthy.
But if he gets a shot Dan, and he's got
his own JJ and Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison and
Aaron Jones and a coach and quarterback coaches, Josh McCown,

(05:20):
that's set up to have him succeed, then you're gonna
look right at the Giants and go, really, Okay, you
sat there at six, you stuck and you picked. And
obviously Malik Neighbors is insanely talented. Again, that's nothing against
that kid. But if Drew Locke is going to be
the Week one starter, which I expect he will be now,

(05:41):
and then Daniel Jones comes back and is somewhat similar
to the quarterback we saw prior to him getting hurt
last year, then there no doubt will be a lot
of long time listeners, first time callers from Staten Island
basically saying, what was up with you taking a wide
receiver for this quarterback group? When JJ McCarthy, who's dominating

(06:03):
in Minnesota, that that that is that is going to
be a possibility for the fall. But in terms of
anyone else, I mean, nothing comes close to Pentex being
drafted by Atlanta. And why a team that does appear
to be set right now to add a big piece
on defense or trade out and get more draft choices

(06:24):
lower down to get the same defender that they could
have chosen at eight uh in the middle of the
first round. There's nothing that there's nothing close to that
that they they they didn't add something to make their
roster better last night. What they did his plan for
the future with a with a at a position that
they have already handsomely paid somebody.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
What are the Bills doing?

Speaker 3 (06:49):
You know what they're doing is I think they're amassing
more picks to get lower in in a draft to
take wide receivers that they're they're equally as happy with
at the top of the second round. It is possible
that Brandon Bean bought himself a full overnight and an

(07:09):
all day to hammer something out with San Francisco, perhaps
for Brandon Ayuk as opposed to doing it on the
draft board when the Niners are figuring out what they're
doing themselves. Thirty first overall. Now you can really set
to it. If there is a veteran out there that
may not be Ayuk, you can try and figure that out.
But otherwise, you know, and I know them making a

(07:32):
trade with Kansas City particularly sticks in the crawl of
Bills fans. But I mean, if they were going to
get ad and I Mitchell last night thirty second overall,
and they hopped out of that spot so the Panthers
could take the kid to get from Florida State, who
verbally said in the process, Caroline had told me they're

(07:55):
going to get me with the first pick in the
second night. And so the free football old knew who
Caroline was trading into that spot that looks includes Buffalo.
So it's what's the big deal? I guess you're only
casting yourself a fifth year of contractual control with the
kid you're drafting first up tonight, while giving you a
shot to make a blockbuster deal. That's that's pretty much

(08:16):
what I think. And maybe they also weren't interested in
Xavier Worthy and they knew the Chiefs were, and and
just keep amassing picks, obviously for a team that made
some big salary cap decision moves on the defensive side
of the ball. They need to They needed to get
more kids and supplement and second night picks in this
draft isn't such a bad thing.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
How would you rank the atmosphere last night in Detroit?

Speaker 4 (08:39):
Awesome?

Speaker 3 (08:40):
Awesome? It was freezing cold, so even with all that,
a quarter of a million people coming to this spot,
you know, and and it was it was lit. It
was a great atmosphere last night. And I'm keen to
see what the next two days bring, because they are

(09:00):
they're often running to beat Nashville's record of six hundred
thousand people. And Nashville at least had, you know, lower
broadways so people could step in and out of outstanding
establishments to sample the draft. This was in Cadillac Square,
so and it was really you couldn't go in and out.
As a matter of fact, they closed down the entryway

(09:24):
about an hour before the draft. They basically said sorry,
and that turned into Times Square. There were kind of
like people spilling on the outskirts of the draft. It
was great, It was awesome, and tonight should be hopefully
equally as lit. How's your energy? Oh Dan, I appreciate
you asking. My energy is great. How's yours?

Speaker 2 (09:45):
Spectacular.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, what'd you think of the Pennix pick?

Speaker 1 (09:52):
I like him. I was told he was moving up
I didn't know that he was moving up there and
that that team and it would work out. But it's
like when people say, well Jordan Love worked out, well
did it because in the moment you didn't help Aaron Rodgers,
but you did help your future and he had a
really good year. Now you got to pay Jordan Love

(10:13):
forty five or fifty million dollars, so he could have
been the right quarterback. It just wasn't the right time
for him to be the right quarterback. And I think
that's what I thought with Pennix. Now, I never would
have brought in Kirk Cousins for one hundred million dollars.
I just wouldn't have done it. With the number of
quarterbacks in this draft. Maybe you know, I like one

(10:35):
or I like two, but I just wouldn't coming off Achilles,
I just wouldn't have done He's thirty five and you're
drafting Pennix, who's probably going to be twenty seven by
the time he gets an opportunity to play on a
regular basis. He's twenty four. You know, it just seem
Jordan Love is now turning twenty four.

Speaker 2 (10:54):
I think so. I don't know.

Speaker 3 (10:56):
It was a hell I mean, but I think you
bring up Jordan Love's situation. Is no doubt what looms
over this decision. For the lack of a better phrase,
that at least Green Bay was fortunate enough to see
the year Jordan Love had before they're going to make
that large financial commitment to him, so they know who

(11:20):
they have in him. That is going to be the
question as to when Penix does get in there twenty six,
twenty seven years old. As you point out, and Atlanta
is looking at the fact that in the back end
of Penix's deal that they are, yes, fourfeiting half of
a rookie contract, four forniting half of a rookie contract

(11:41):
and the financial gains you get by having one. And
also that is the mantra in the NFL right now,
is winning a super Bowl within a rookie contract for
a quarterback drafted as high as Penix was. They're fourfeiting
half of that. But they're looking at the back half
of that where I looked it up this morning, He's
going to cost them six and a half million dollars
over the final two years of his deal and then

(12:04):
a fifty year option, which is dirt cheap. So they're
looking at that, but they're also, as you pointed out,
they're not supplementing the guy they have just spent insane
generational money on. And that guy shows up, He's thrown
out first pitches at baseball games saying I'm an Atlanta guy.
Now I'm going to retire here, and you've now robbed

(12:25):
him of that at whole, you know, public persona right
off the before you even he barely showed up for
the offseason workout program. And that's gonna be the question
too that he's going to have. Is he's walking through
the buildings, like when did they fall in love with Pennies?
Was it, like legitimately during the college football playoffs and

(12:46):
he still signed me and didn't say that they were
thinking of him. Was it during the top thirty visit
that they took to him, was it during a pro day?
What when was it? And how come it didn't filter
to me until thirty seconds before they picked them?

Speaker 5 (13:02):
Right?

Speaker 3 (13:03):
I mean that basically what the what the Falcons did
by calling him before they picked him is kind of
like when somebody reaches for the check, and they don't
intend to pick it up. They're just doing it as
you're purchasing it, like let me, let me, let me,
let me get that, you know, Like that's essentially what
they did last night. And I don't know how it's
gonna manifest.

Speaker 1 (13:23):
I tell him, give me the name that you're nervous
about pronouncing over the next two days.

Speaker 3 (13:30):
Oh gosh, you know what, I'm just taking it one
pic at a time and hoping for the best. They
got a great crew. They spell things phonetically for me, Dan,
and that's when you also goes, what do you think
of this one, Daniel? You know, like that's when you
do one of those, you releean on Clad or Schrager
or Charles Davis. And I appreciate you mentioning the run

(13:51):
Saint Jude dot org slash run Ritron to donate any dollar,
any penny matters for Saint Jude. So I appreciate you
doing that too, And I appreciate the video.

Speaker 1 (14:00):
You shot and you're welcome, Paul, and.

Speaker 2 (18:00):
No counter right now, Dan, We've got up there. We've
got two.

Speaker 7 (18:06):
Okay, best non quarterback pick made last night in the
first ten Marvin Harrison Junior going to the Cardinals, Joe
Allt and the Chargers. It's not sexy, but that's a
great pick that makes them better. Yeah, Roma Dunda going
to the Bears.

Speaker 1 (18:23):
Yeah, I love that was That's a fun pick. That's
a lot of fun. Yes, And then you have neighbors
going to the Giants. But then you're going to the
Giants and who's throwing it to you?

Speaker 2 (18:33):
Right?

Speaker 7 (18:33):
And Marvin Harrison Junior plug him in. He's ready to
play superstar. Yes, and I thought that that was going
to happen. I didn't buy into the JJ McCarthy hype,
although I'm told this morning by a source that teams
they did want to go up to where Arizona was,
they just weren't giving enough, and teams were. I said

(18:54):
there'd be a team that would get squirrely. It does.
It happens every year.

Speaker 1 (18:58):
Now, I didn't know that team would be at and
there were other teams that were interested in Michael Pennix junior.
Seattle reportedly the Raiders Denver. But Atlanta gets their man,
and our man, de Orlando Ledbetter has been covering the
Falcons for twenty years, I believe, and you and your
mock draft back in early April had them taking Michael

(19:21):
Penix junior. I'll let you take a victory lap here,
but why did you think Michael Pennix Junior was going
to the Falcons?

Speaker 8 (19:29):
Well, thank you so much, Dan, Yeah, I moved off
of it. So, yeah, I won't take the victory lap.
But they have went out to Seattle so to work
him out last year, the whole Artur Blank plane, the
general manager, the whole coaching staff, and so they did
the same thing last year when they went to Austin
to do Jon Robinson. So I'm like, oh, this is

(19:53):
the full entourage trip. So that's a tip that this
is the pick, and so I wrote it and I went.
I went and said, hey, you know this is the
pick because they went full of Monty on the visit.

Speaker 1 (20:06):
Okay, I'm just trying to understand. Now, let me ask you.
Do you like the pick?

Speaker 9 (20:13):
I understand the pick. I'm in the mind.

Speaker 1 (20:16):
That's not liking the pick.

Speaker 8 (20:18):
Yeah, yeah, No, I think you help your team out immediately.

Speaker 9 (20:24):
But I understand what they were doing. Yeah.

Speaker 8 (20:26):
Yeah, you could have got a more impact player, maybe
a defensive uh star Wars that's gonna be on the
field for you for ten years. Where you pick the
guy that's gonna clearly sit for a couple Yeah.

Speaker 1 (20:39):
I don't get it because he's twenty four, he's probably
gonna be twenty seven by the time he's the full
time quarterback. And you're invested in Cousins for I think
you're tied up at least for three years here.

Speaker 8 (20:52):
Yeah, the hit would be massive. If it's a two
year deal, you're okay after three and certainly fine after four.

Speaker 1 (21:02):
Oh my gosh, how do you think Kirk Cousins is
going to take this?

Speaker 8 (21:08):
Oh he hasn't taken it. Well, we've talked to his agent.
We've heard from confused. Confused, shock is what we heard, dismay,
you know where some of the reactions of Kirk cousins.
He hasn't come out publicly, but on his agent, Mike McCartney,
he has expressed those emotions on behalf of his client.

Speaker 1 (21:32):
How does this work out?

Speaker 4 (21:35):
You know, there's a.

Speaker 9 (21:36):
There's a couple of different ways.

Speaker 8 (21:38):
You know, Hey, Kirk comes in, they win, they develop Pinnis,
they have a transition plan in place.

Speaker 9 (21:45):
The other scenario is Kirk you know, they don't win,
they lose.

Speaker 8 (21:49):
They put the kid in there too early, and they're
back here in the draft and number eight picked him.

Speaker 9 (21:54):
Trying to pick another quarterback in a couple of years.

Speaker 1 (21:57):
Let's go back a little ways when we thought Belichick
was going to Atlanta and we found out some more details,
maybe Robert Kraft telling his friend Arthur Blank that don't
do it. What was your thought when the Falcons decided
that they weren't going to hire Bill Belichick?

Speaker 9 (22:14):
Yeah, they I was caught out what most people were.
I thought it was a lot.

Speaker 8 (22:20):
You know, when you got rid of a coach that
you know, Arthur Smith had done a credible job given
the set of circumstances that he had, and you're gonna
cut him short early. That was indicating that you already
had something in place with Belichick. So we were stunn
that that didn't happen. He couldn't win over the building

(22:41):
and so the owner had to move in another direction.

Speaker 9 (22:43):
There. Raheem had support within the building and ended up.

Speaker 4 (22:49):
Getting the job.

Speaker 2 (22:51):
Yeah, this is wild.

Speaker 9 (22:54):
It's the fathom.

Speaker 1 (22:59):
You've seen a lot over twenty years.

Speaker 9 (23:01):
Yes, I have the federal dog fighting trout to this.

Speaker 1 (23:06):
Yeah, yeah, you've seen it all. But you know it's
still I wouldn't have brought in Kirk Cousins thirty five
coming off Achilles surgery and it's gonna cost me one
hundred million dollars guaranteed. No, I just now I know,
maybe he's the final piece here. We're assuming he's going
to be healthy to be able to play. But man,
I just I'm puzzled by this. I'm puzzled. I'm not

(23:29):
easily puzzled in this business. This this one the whole thing.
In the off season. No, Belichick, you got Kirk Cousins
and now you take Michael Pennix.

Speaker 8 (23:38):
Yeah, I think you gotta go back to them going
after the Shaun Watson uh in h two twenty one
when they decided that Matt Ryan couldn't keep going, and
you know, they found out the price tag was too
hot for him.

Speaker 9 (23:53):
Then the two thirty guarantee was too high. So then
you end up.

Speaker 8 (23:57):
Playing with Mariota and Rinter for years and I didn't
work out. So now you're in desperate quarterback move. So
you don't want to be one of those teams like
Denver playing sixteen different quarterbacks for the next ten years.
So you make a move and get Cousins, and now
you make another move and get his apparent success. And

(24:19):
so that's the backdrop. You kind of got to start
at them trying to get to Sean Watson and that
failing and then the subsequent move being bad.

Speaker 1 (24:30):
Well, you got a lot of things to write about
down there, So we do make your job easy. Hey,
thanks for joining us.

Speaker 9 (24:40):
You're welcome, Dan, thanks for having me.

Speaker 1 (24:42):
De Orlando ledbetter. He initially had the Falcons taking Michael
Pennix Junior, had him among the final five players in
the Falcons radar, and what he did is basically apply
logic of they went all in. Everybody went out to
see Bjeon Robinson and then he used the same logic

(25:03):
of Arthur Blank and his private jet and everybody is
going to go out to the workout for Michael Pennix Junior. Yeah, Paul, it.

Speaker 10 (25:12):
Makes more sense now when you hear him say that
they went out looked at him and fell in love
with him. They also got cousins to them, They're like,
well we got both, we got two things. Yeah, it's
a generation to go. But Steve Young set for four
seasons for the forty nine ers. I don't think he
took over till he's twenty nine.

Speaker 1 (25:28):
Yeah, mean you had the one of the greatest quarterbacks
of all time in front of him, just like a cousin.

Speaker 10 (25:33):
Sorry, I thought you're setting me up.

Speaker 1 (25:34):
Yes, I get it. If I got the one of
the greatest court he was the greatest quarterback in the
in the league at the time, and you got Steve
Young and you were able to have him.

Speaker 2 (25:45):
Wait, I get that.

Speaker 10 (25:46):
It's like we're trying to find reasons that this could
work out long term, not shortter.

Speaker 1 (25:51):
Well, it can work out. It doesn't mean it was
the right decision right now. But look, would I have
hired Belichick? I guess. I gasp, But look, it's the
front office is going telling the owner, we don't think
you should hire him because they don't want to lose
their jobs. Philadelphia should have hired Bill Belichick, absolutely, but okay,

(26:16):
and then you bring in Kirk Cousins. I like Kirk
great guest. I wouldn't have paid him that money coming
off of achilles surgery and he's thirty five. And then
you take Michael Pennix. Okay, it might work out, just
like Jordan Love worked out, but it wasn't the right
decision in the moment in my opinion. And you're lucky

(26:39):
he did, you know, came out of Michelle when he's
played well. He played really well second half of the season.
And I've been a Jordan Love fan, said that he
was going to be a franchise quarterback. But in the moment,
you had the best quarterback in the NFL and you
didn't get him any weapons in Aaron Rodgers. All righty,
we'll talk to Lewis Reddkill join us coming up. Let's

(27:02):
see James and Virginia is back. Hi, James, what's on
your mind today?

Speaker 11 (27:07):
Ah?

Speaker 12 (27:07):
Thank you for taking my call. Brother Aty Friday DP
Dan that salute the Commanders. Man, it's a new Aaron Washington.
But I'm calling about Michael Keennick Jr. Man, I love
this guy and I love this pitch man.

Speaker 5 (27:22):
You the coboard is not there.

Speaker 12 (27:24):
In Atlanta. You got Vzon Robinson, Drake London, Kyle Pitt. Offensively,
they got a solid o line. They're gonna be good.
And if Kirk Cousins does what Kirk Cousins is supposed
to do, when is the next time Atlanta's jazzing in
the top ten. Meanwhile, you got a young rookie sitting
Timmering learning the playbook. He's uber smart. And when he

(27:46):
comes into play, if he's twenty seven, if he plays
for thirty.

Speaker 1 (27:50):
Four, James, James, you're a Commander's fan, and here you
are falling in love with the Falcons.

Speaker 12 (27:57):
I love football, but my heart is Burgundy and gold.
But I love football, man. But I'll be honest with you. Man,
if he played seventy zerus in seventy severs watching in
his head, fifteen.

Speaker 1 (28:09):
Quarterback, Okay, If I said you could have Michael Pennix
Junior for the Commanders or Jadeen Daniels.

Speaker 12 (28:19):
See, I'm biased, man, because I wanted them to trade back.
The thing that about Daniels that worries me is that
he's like but he is bigger than I thought at
six flour and his speed does give him an ability
to move around the pocket and make plays. It's just
that that's stat yesterday.

Speaker 1 (28:34):
You didn't think you didn't answer the question.

Speaker 12 (28:38):
I got to take number five, Jaydon Daniels because he's
on the team.

Speaker 5 (28:41):
Man. But I.

Speaker 1 (28:45):
All right, thank you, James. Have a good weekend. Uh
can in Atlanta? Who Marvin hung up on before Ken
could say something about the Falcons. I can sorry about that.

Speaker 5 (28:58):
No worries, just a little brother and brother Clarnton.

Speaker 13 (29:01):
But I'm sorry, Hey, no worries, No worries.

Speaker 5 (29:06):
You know, I got to see who was who and
what was what.

Speaker 13 (29:08):
But but being in Atlanta, and especially being a season
ticket holder, our two trips to the Super Bowl with
the Eugene Robinson scare scandal and the twenty eight to
three thing. The twenty eight to three was the closest
thing to a death, like losing that Super Bowl and

(29:29):
having the year after Mike Vick left and having a
year without Matt Ryan, with two years without Matt Ryan,
This is the first time that ches and old hugs
and kisses kind of franchise was very shrewd. And of
all the sports, nothing, no sport is more shrewd than football.

(29:49):
And this was one.

Speaker 5 (29:51):
Hundred percent about business.

Speaker 13 (29:52):
It may not make sense to anybody that's on anywhere,
even us, but those guys tear and Raheen looks like
they are dug in and it makes sense to make
sure that we don't have anything about.

Speaker 14 (30:08):
I get it.

Speaker 1 (30:09):
I get it, and thank you Ken for calling back.
I get it. But it's just you deal. Now. The
NFL is now, it's the now Football League. You know.
The Chiefs have this window. What they do They traded
up a couple of spots and they get the fastest
guy in the draft. You're thinking now, and that's where

(30:33):
you know. I'm confused with this because Atlanta can be
they can win that division. They can, but I'm not
helping who they have now. They have young talent. Now, okay,
it's not enough to win, like you can win the division.
What's your goal. I would think it would be to
win a few games in the playoffs, not just win

(30:55):
your division. John and Hartford, Hi, John, what's on your mind?

Speaker 4 (30:59):
Today.

Speaker 15 (31:00):
Right, I'm five ten, two hundred and.

Speaker 5 (31:06):
Let's move on.

Speaker 15 (31:08):
I literally have news about the word literally, okay, And
so because young people were using it incorrectly for the
past I don't know, a few years, Merriam Webster's Dictionary
had to add an additional definition of the word literally
and it includes the word hyperbolic. Okay, So literally, the

(31:37):
word literally doesn't mean not anymore.

Speaker 7 (31:41):
Literally, the word literally doesn't mean literally anymore because so
many people use it incorrectly, they had to change the
meaning of the word just so that many people aren't wrong.

Speaker 2 (31:49):
Okay, thank you, John. That's crazy.

Speaker 1 (31:55):
I know my kids will say that literally like oh,
you know, blah blah blah literally, and then you go no, no, no,
no figuratively then like huh go never mind.

Speaker 2 (32:07):
That's mine.

Speaker 7 (32:07):
For me is the one that really gets because everyone
that's dropped l y from words like no, you took
that personal. No, you took it personally. You took it personally.
You didn't take a personal That's that's a different word.
It's personally.

Speaker 1 (32:21):
Yes, Marvin, did you ask the school that you paid
for for their money back?

Speaker 5 (32:26):
Like?

Speaker 1 (32:26):
Wait, literal, Well, if you have a conversation with somebody
under twenty five, count the number of times they say like,
like and then like and then like, And I'll go,
how many likes do you need? Like my daughters all
the time. Okay, how about we drop the like or
the slang words?

Speaker 2 (32:45):
Yeah? Literally all right.

Speaker 7 (32:49):
My wife just said Riz yesterday and we were like,
what are you doing? She said it tongue in cheekly.
She said it like, uh, which is is funny when
you're starting to notice these moments where you're like, I
can't believe this is how old you're getting.

Speaker 2 (33:02):
But what if we say Riz, we sound so much older? Yeah? Uh?
It was hilarious. The cringe factor was hilarious because you're
just like, oh no, it.

Speaker 1 (33:11):
Wasn't cringey now, that's calv Yeah, no cav Now. I
heard that one time and one of my daughters said,
oh man, that album it's so Riz. It's got so
much Riz. And I go what yeah, Chrisma And I
go what yeah? Riz? I go okay, Riz, you got Riz.
All right, let me take a break. We'll talk some

(33:33):
more about the NFL draft, Lewis Riddick and the on
deck Circle.

Speaker 2 (33:35):
More phone calls as well.

Speaker 4 (33:36):
Back after this.

Our good buddy Lewis Riddick covering the NFL Draft, and
he'll be on site again in Detroit. It'll be day
two of the draft, starting on ESPN two at seven
Eastern and then Saturday back on the mother ship, Lewis,

(35:27):
if the Falcons had called you last week, let's say
Terry Fonta called you and said, hey, we're thinking about
taking Raheem Morris all right, Or if Raheem Morris had
called you, we're thinking about taking Michael Pennox junior.

Speaker 2 (35:39):
Your reaction would have been what.

Speaker 1 (35:44):
First?

Speaker 14 (35:44):
I would have said, well, well, why.

Speaker 16 (35:48):
Concerning where you're at in your program built where meaning
you're right there, You're right there as far as being
able to win the South, get into the playoffs, and
then who knows what happens, especially if Rahim you can
get somebody to fix or help fix what has been
a year's long problem as far as rushing the past.

(36:08):
You guys have this organization has thrown draft capital, free
agent capital at it.

Speaker 14 (36:13):
It just hasn't worked.

Speaker 16 (36:14):
And you have all of them sitting there at eight
at your disposal. You can pick whichever one you want.
Whichever one you want, And with Kurt, I'm assuming he's
good to go, right. You gave him a hundred million guaranteed, right,
So I mean, so, what's what's the deal there?

Speaker 5 (36:30):
Now?

Speaker 16 (36:31):
I know, as the Great ron Wolf always said, Andy
Re used to tell us, the best time to pick
your franchise quarterback is when you don't need your franchise quarterback.

Speaker 14 (36:39):
I get that. I mean, you're not gonna get anything.

Speaker 16 (36:42):
You're not getting any return on your investment this year
with that guy. So if you're willing to say, hey,
look we're okay with that, we'll get well, we'll hit
it the rest of the draft well, and we'll be
able to address that pass rush position and we'll still
be okay even if we don't get a return on
that first round pick.

Speaker 14 (36:58):
That I guess. I would say, more power to you,
but good.

Speaker 16 (37:00):
Luck, you better hit because, as we know, like patients,
isn't something that the NFL owners have a whole lot of.
So you better be winning regardless, and I get learned.

Speaker 14 (37:12):
I get thinking about the long term because.

Speaker 16 (37:15):
Michael could be fantastic and if you believe it, hey,
I'm never one to like ever kind of talk somebody
out of believing that they may have found a franchise quarterback.

Speaker 14 (37:24):
That's why I don't. I never had any issue with
the Patriots taking.

Speaker 16 (37:28):
One if the Giants felt like they needed one, I
never have an issue with that.

Speaker 1 (37:32):
But best case scenario is he doesn't play for three years, right,
because you'll have Cousins playing well, you're paying him for
three years guaranteed, and then he's he's going to be
twenty seven when he probably gets a chance to start
in the NFL. I want to take advantage of the
rookie contract at that position, so that I didn't understand

(37:55):
it now. I've said before, I wouldn't have brought in
Kirk Cousins for that kind of money coming on off
Achilles surgery, So I wouldn't have done that. Now, would
I've gone all in for a quarterback? Yes, But I
just think you got to address needs, just like you know,
green Bag it now looks like they did the right
job with Jordan Love, but in the moment, they didn't

(38:15):
do the right job because the right thing, because they
didn't add to a team that was his Super Bowl contender.

Speaker 14 (38:24):
Again.

Speaker 16 (38:25):
But as you know, I mean, it's also trading back
into the first in the bottom quarter of the.

Speaker 14 (38:28):
Round to get that quarterback instead of taking him eight. Yeah. See,
that's the that's the rub right there. That's where you're
going to look.

Speaker 16 (38:36):
You could get I mean, arguably you get a Day
one impact player. You could have got a Day one
impact player that steps in and helps your defense, maybe
get people off the field. So you're a new offense
led by Kirk Cousins, who you gave a hundred million dollars,
who can have more cracks at Now you don't have
that guy. So look, it's one of those where I
saw some video of Terry Foutenough talking to Arthur Blank

(38:58):
in the draft.

Speaker 1 (38:58):
Room, like wait a minute, wait, what are you telling me?

Speaker 14 (39:06):
Yes, the wall.

Speaker 1 (39:13):
Who had a great.

Speaker 2 (39:14):
Night last night?

Speaker 16 (39:18):
You know, I think I think Baltimore always winds up
having great nights because they look Nate Wiggins. The selection
of him at thirty. Nate was probably when Quinnon Mitchell
was probably my was my number one corner, But like Nate,
him and Nate Wigans were like one in one a
because of the because of the way they play, which
is so competitive and tough and physical. And you always

(39:40):
hear down in Baltimore, you know, John Harvey is always
talking about play like a raven. Well what does that mean? Well,
I think if you turn on the table with Nate
Wigans at Clemson, you'll see what it means. You watch
the North Carolina game where he run he tracks a
dude down from fifteen yards behind when he could have
easily given up.

Speaker 4 (39:54):
On the play.

Speaker 14 (39:55):
That's what it means.

Speaker 16 (39:56):
When you watch him covering Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson
at Florida State, and then he'll go into slot and
cover guys like Ted Walker from North Carolina, totally different
bodies and shut them all down. That's playing like a rick.
So that to me, that team, that organization probably knows
who they are as well as anyone in the national
football legue. And now I know people say, well, they
ain't win any Super Bowls. I mean, they didn't pass

(40:17):
Patrick yet, But that's besides the point. They understand the draft.
They understand how to find their guys and for them
to sit there with cornerback being a top two kneed
and sit there at thirty and watch a guy like
Nate Wiggins fall all the way down because of all
those offensive players who want above them. That's a great
night if you're at the Costa, if you're Steve Bashatti,
you went home last night going and we're pretty good

(40:38):
at this thing.

Speaker 1 (40:39):
The Chiefs know their identity, yep. But I'm wondering if
Buffalo knows its identity because Buffalo trades with Kansas City,
and Kansas City says, uh, okay, we'll take Xavier, We'll
take the fastest guy in the draft. Let me start
with Buffalo. What do you make of what Buffalo's trying
to do.

Speaker 16 (40:58):
Yeah, it's interesting because like the two quarterback, I mean
the two wide receivers, like late in the draft, of
two exaviers that went Worthy and then Lagett who went
to Carolina, who trades with Buffalo, and Buffalo trades out
of the first like both of those of those two
Leaguett is the one that if I'm Buffalo, I would

(41:18):
have wanted the bigger guy. Six twenty, a true ex
ride receiver on the outside who has four to three speed.

Speaker 14 (41:27):
He looks like a j.

Speaker 4 (41:28):
Brown.

Speaker 16 (41:29):
That's my pre That's who I think he'll be. Wo
he'd be that catch and run guy who will just
go ninety because he's four to three or at two
hundred and twenty pounds. He's gonna run over your small
linebackers and your safeties and corners and he can return punts.

Speaker 14 (41:42):
He's all. That's the kind of guy. Like, like, that's
that guy that Josh Allen.

Speaker 16 (41:45):
You could picture Xavier to get up there in Buffalo
with Josh Allen and Khalil Shakir in the slot. You
I mean that that just makes so much sense to me.
And I was like, man, like they they just gave
away those two dudes. Like if they want Xavier worthy
the same thing, they just gave him away. Hey, now
there's other good receivers coming up here that are going
to go off the border early like a guy like

(42:06):
a guy like ad Mitchell from Texas. Body type wise
fits what I think Buffalo needs in terms of how
you construct the.

Speaker 14 (42:13):
Wide receiver room. We'll see they may draped down again.

Speaker 5 (42:16):
I'll sit.

Speaker 14 (42:19):
Maybe you have some other.

Speaker 1 (42:19):
Plans who had a better night last night, Denver or Minnesota.
From the quarterbacking perspective, Wow, that's a.

Speaker 14 (42:26):
Real good one, man.

Speaker 16 (42:27):
I would say Minnesota simply because I think that.

Speaker 14 (42:33):
One.

Speaker 16 (42:33):
Minnesota has the best, I think situation to offer any
of these young quarterbacks. Solid offensive line, two bookend tackles,
running back in Aaron Jones, who has proven in the
NFL he can do it all. Cats out of the backfield,
end run it.

Speaker 4 (42:48):
TJ.

Speaker 16 (42:48):
Hawkinson comes back healthy. You have a top three tight
end in the NFL. You have maybe arguably the best
wide receiver in the NFL, maybe the best two in
the NFL in Jordan Addison. And you have Kevin O'Connell,
who who I've been told, look Josh McCowan, who went
up there, who you know gets released in Carolina, goes
up there to be the quarterback coach. When I saw
him at the combine, he said, you know, you know

(43:09):
one of the best things about our situation for a
young quarterback is that Kevin has answers For young quarterbacks
when they see something they don't quite understand, or they'd
see a situation they go, how am I supposed to
handle this? There's no there's no gray area, their rules,
their methodology, their philosophy is so air tight. I shouldn't

(43:32):
say air tight, has so many different things that it
can go to to answer anything defenses can do that
there's nothing the young quarterback will be able to say, Hey,
you know what, my guy, my quarterback coach, my offensive
coordinator doesn't have an answer for me. And that's why
Kirk Cousins I believe took his game to a whole
nother level when Kevin got there and played the way
he did so for you know, for a guy like

(43:54):
JJ McCarthy to go in there now and be able
to sit behind Sam who also was played in this
styleless system out there in San fran that holds Sean McVay,
you know, type of system. I think it's just perfect
for him. It's perfect for him to sit there, bide
his time, and when he's ready to go and they're
ready to put him in there, look at all the

(44:15):
things he has to work with.

Speaker 4 (44:16):
Now.

Speaker 16 (44:16):
Look, Sean Payton is someone who I don't think as
much as people respect him as a coach, I don't
think people really understand unless you've talked to him for
a little bit, just how smart this dude is. When
it comes to being able to assess strengths and weaknesses
and offensive.

Speaker 14 (44:31):
Players and put them in good spots.

Speaker 16 (44:33):
And if he believes in bow knicks the way he
obviously does to draft him where he did, you can
best believe he's going to have bow knicks in positions
to really take take advantage of his strengths. And I
think bo is a darn good quarterback and I think
he'll excel given the way Sean coaches that position and
how multiple he can be in.

Speaker 14 (44:51):
Terms of utilizing guys.

Speaker 16 (44:53):
Whether you have a big, giant arm and can throw
the football down the field like Jamis, or you're someone
who was like Drew who is much more seren, which
I think Boonix is like right in between there, and
I think we're going to see that.

Speaker 1 (45:04):
I know you're busy. Always great to talk to you.
Have a good weekend, you bat Man. Thanks a lot
for having me. Lewis Riddick ESPN NFL College Football analyst
and also worked in the front office with Washington and
the Eagles part of the draft day coverage and ESPN
has that for you tonight ESPN two at seven Eastern
and then Saturday on the mother Ship beginning at noon Eastern.

(45:26):
I had a source who reached out this morning. You know,
he knows that we're talking about Michael Pennick Junior. And
he said, you know, here's the one problem that I
have with Michael Pennix. He goes and it's not injuries,
it's he doesn't make plays out of the pocket. And
in the NFL, you can't just stay in the pocket.
You got to be able to make plays outside the pocket.

(45:47):
And he is not somebody who makes plays out of
the pocket. Now, I did text back and say, well,
he's got three years to learn how to do that,
because I don't think he's playing anytime soon. Your best
case scenario is Kirk Cousins comes back, plays well for
three years, you give him his one hundred million dollars guaranteed,
and then you say, all right, Kirk, thank you. You're
thirty eight and we got your backup ready to go.

Speaker 10 (46:10):
Yes, Pauline, see when I hear what you just said,
I think that's a positive thing. All I hear is
guys like heard Collinsworth last night and another's going we
need more quarterbacks to stay in the pocket and make
passes on time. There's a scheduled offense that they worked
hard on in timing, and he goes too. Many of
these guys are freelancing and running around. To me, that
sounds like a positive about Penis.

Speaker 1 (46:29):
I just think there are plays that you have to make.
There be plays when you have to make them out
of the pocket. You're going to be forced out of
the pocket. You know, the talent level you're going up
against is going to force you out of the pocket.
Everybody has an edge rusher, at least one. He's going
to have to make some plays out of the pocket.
I was watching Nick Saban. I thought Sabin did a

(46:50):
really good job. Bill Belichick did a nice job with McAfee.
You know, you're never quite sure about either of these
guys because of their personality. Like Nick seems like he's
got a sense of humor. You know, it's dry. Where's
Belichick is just dry? And I doesn't. I know everybody says, oh,
those who play for him, and he's got a great

(47:11):
sense of humor. Okay, you know who's always funny, the
guy who's in power, you know, the guy who wins
the Super Bowl exactly. Yeah, you're right, Dan, You're right
about that. And what happened last night on the mother
Ship set. No matter what Nick Saban said, and I go,
it's not that funny. How about we pick our spots.

(47:34):
But they were they they wanted to please him and
make him feel comfortable with everything that he said. And
he does have great insights, but he's not a stand
up comedian. And Belichick was more of just like McAfee
and you know his band of misfits. They're like, you know,
saying silly stuff. And then Bill would come back and
he'd be like, well, I don't see the comparison between

(47:56):
Drake May and Josh Allen.

Speaker 2 (47:58):
It's footwork and he leaves a lot to you desired, but.

Speaker 1 (48:01):
It's like they'd hired Stephen Wright to be the draft okay,
and then McAfee and his crowd, you know, they're all
caffeined up in there. But I thought Saban did a
good job. I thought he did a nice job, brought
us and he involved people. A lot of times. You
play to that person and and that's not a good

(48:21):
thing to do that you want that person to then
play to everybody else on your panel up you know
on the set that it's not just hey, let's go
to you and then everybody else has to kind of
fill in. After that, Saban would get it and then
Saban would say, what do you think, Kirk, and and
he would send it to Herbstreet. Then I thought that

(48:42):
that was great, But you know, it's it's fun to watch.
I'm watching my boy rich Eisen, Daniel Jeremiah, Charles Davis,
and I'm watching those guys last night, and I'm loyal
to Richie rich even though you know the mothership that
they still got friends there. But yeah, you know, flipping
back and forth, and it felt like did the NFL

(49:03):
network were they five seconds ahead of the mother ship
or was that just my direct TV?

Speaker 17 (49:09):
I experienced the same thing as it was solid like
five seconds getting it faster from NFL network. But maybe
different cable systems are different.

Speaker 14 (49:15):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (49:16):
And I don't like tipping, you know, the picks, and then
Cheft was tipped. I don't want that, and and you
know what, don't do it on TV, do it on
so show. I'm fine with that, but I had a
problem with that, and I turned back to the NFL network.
I don't want you tip in your pitches, your picks
or your pitches. Yes, Hunt, No, it was just I.

Speaker 11 (49:36):
Don't know if it was frustrating, but I just found
it odd.

Speaker 17 (49:38):
But like we're going back and forth discutage to see why,
like why one would be a good five.

Speaker 11 (49:43):
Six seconds ahead of the other one when they're just
two major.

Speaker 1 (49:46):
Network Yes, pone.

Speaker 11 (49:47):
It happens like that.

Speaker 10 (49:47):
Also with the Red Zone on different channels, like the
Red Zone on both DirecTV and on NFL network, it
doesn't match up to network broadcasts. It's actually faster. So
let's say you have a few TVs on, you have
CBS and and Fox on a weekend, and you have
live games, and then you have one of the red
zones on. The red zone is about seven seconds faster.

Speaker 1 (50:07):
Plus Todd got an email that had the top ten
picks and JJ McCarthy was already picked, even though he
hadn't been picked on TV.

Speaker 17 (50:15):
It was listed as a pick in an email that
I got and it was not.

Speaker 11 (50:18):
Announced just yet on NFL network or ESPN.

Speaker 1 (50:21):
Do you have that email?

Speaker 2 (50:22):
Almost no ways possible.

Speaker 14 (50:23):
Do you have that email?

Speaker 11 (50:25):
I may have deleted it, but I will check.

Speaker 2 (50:26):
Well, that's in your deleting get to be in your trash.

Speaker 10 (50:30):
Why do I think this is not a conspiracy and
more is about todd and email system.

Speaker 7 (50:34):
This is like Oliver Stone's going to be like, how
was the JFK assassination announced in Australia twenty four hours
before it actually happened.

Speaker 11 (50:41):
I got something at nine to eighteen pm last night.

Speaker 17 (50:44):
It says tonight's NFL drepped so far and at number
ten it said Vikings traded up JJ McCarthy and it
had not been announced yet by the Commission.

Speaker 11 (50:53):
Very soon after it did. But I got this email
before the announcements.

Speaker 1 (50:56):
Man, you know what, Let's get the ITM on that,
Pauli Fritzy, send it over to Paulie.

Speaker 2 (51:01):
Let's get the ITAM on it. All right, We'll.

Speaker 1 (51:03):
Take a break back after this. Thanks for listening to
The Dan Patrick Show podcast. Be sure to catch us
live every weekday morning nine until noon eastern six to
nine Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, and you can find
us on the iHeartRadio app at FSR or stream us
live on the Peacock app. Our good buddy Ross Tucker
joining us in a moment. I did out glout and

(51:24):
inspect the tragger grills, just to make sure that everything
looked on the up and up. Pretzel buns, sliders, mini
pretzel dogs and baked pretzel bites and beerd cheese dip.
This is how it sounded last night when the draft
all of a sudden changed.

Speaker 2 (51:41):
Here's the commissioner with.

Speaker 18 (51:43):
The eighth pick in the twenty twenty four NFL Draft,
the LANFL can select Michael Pennix, junior quarterback Washington.

Speaker 1 (51:55):
You just hear the laughter there. They're like, WHOA, at
least it's on us, you know that. Just the shock
value there, And I kept going, wait, there has to
be a trade. Did they take somebody to maybe be
able to trade to somebody? And then we realized no,
they were taking Michael Pennix, junior third. He's Ross Tucker,

(52:17):
our good buddy Westwood one CBS Sports, NFL college football
analyst and host of the Ross Tucker Football Podcast. Give
me some logic behind what the Falcons did last night.

Speaker 4 (52:28):
Well, I would say Dan went in doubt in the NFL,
and my experience look for the decision makers to make
decisions that they believe is in their best interest for
their job security and or job preservation. And I believe
at some point the Falcons GM Terry Fontineau and the

(52:49):
head coach Raheem Morris were talking and they realized, hey,
we're probably going to be pretty good the next couple
of years with Kirk Cousins. The NFC South's not that great,
will be in the mix. Maybe we'll win the division,
be in the playoffs. But if we get a guy
like Pennix now, then year three, maybe year four, we

(53:12):
have a succession plan in place to the point where
Arthur Blank isn't going to fire them before Pennix at
least has one year, maybe even two. So I think
those guys, essentially Dan bought themselves a four year runway,
maybe even five, but a four year runway with a

(53:33):
couple of years of Cousins, probably a couple of years
of Pennix, and I think that's a big reason why
they did what they did. Frankly, I think it's selfish,
and this is coming from a former players perspective. I
think it's borderline disrespectful to guys like Jake Matthews at
left tackle, Grady Jarrett defensive tame, even Kirk Cousins, who

(53:54):
probably won't even still be on the team and playing
by the time Pennicks played. It really really bothers me.

Speaker 1 (54:03):
Yeah, but Arthur Blank has to go hold on, explain
this to me, and I would imagine he would have
veto power in the war room, because if you said
to me, maybe we just signed this guy for one
hundred million, and granted we showedn't He's thirty five coming
off Achilly surgery, and we're going to fall in love

(54:24):
with Michael Pennix Junior and we're going to take him
and we need defense, and now we can be that
surprise team. Maybe we could be the Detroit Lions. Maybe
we're that next team to step up. I just can't
imagine that they convinced Arthur Blank. You know, hey, this
is the right guy for three years down the road.

(54:44):
We don't know if Arthur Blank's going to be alive
in three years. He's eighty one.

Speaker 4 (54:48):
Like I just.

Speaker 1 (54:51):
From every angle, as much as I liked Pennix, I
didn't like him that much and I don't want him
to sit for three years.

Speaker 4 (54:59):
Well and Dan at a minimum, Okay, even if you
liked the move, it is an over allocation of resources
in the same offseason. You know, they say they liked
the green Bay Packer model. Well, first of all, the
Green Bay Packers already had their franchise quarterbacks. They didn't

(55:20):
just sign them the four year deals. And also those
guys Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love fell to them in
the twenties, which, by the way, eviscerates the falcons whole
argument that you can only get these guys in the
top ten and we're not gonna be drafting here and
you gotta get them now. First of all, Pennix was
the fourth quarterback to go off the board. Okay, let's

(55:43):
not act like this was Jaydon Daniels or Kayleb Williams.
He was the fourth guy off the board, and the
Packers were able to get franchise quarterbacks in the twenties
to do it, they say, then they gave Kirk Cousins
a no trade clause, Like where is the force If
you liked Pennix this much and you signed Cousins the

(56:05):
second week of March, you know, if you thought there
was any chance that you would draft Pennix at eight,
you don't give Kirk Cousins that contract and a no
trade clause so that you can't even get any recruitment
of the assets when you move on from Cousins. He's
not gonna let you trade. I mean like, nope, nope, veto, Nope,
you're gonna have to cut Cousins and give him the

(56:27):
ten million dollars that's still guaranteed in twenty twenty six.
I think it's one of the worst moves I've seen
in a long time. I know some Falcons fans feel like, hey,
it means we're gonna be good for the next ten
to twelve years. Yeah, well maybe, but Michael Pennix might stink.
And not only that, there were a bunch of teams
that wanted to trade up to get him, like the Saints,

(56:49):
like the Raiders. Reportedly, the Falcons could have traded down
still gotten the number one defensive player in the draft,
whoever they thought that was, and on other assets and
cemented themselves as the clear favorite in the NFC South
to actually get to the playoffs for the first time

(57:09):
in seven years since twenty seventeen and host a home
playoff game. But no, they didn't want to do that.
They're worried about their own job. I think it's a
selfish move by the GM and head coach. That's my
read on it from a player's perspective.

Speaker 1 (57:25):
What else bothered you last night?

Speaker 6 (57:29):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (57:29):
That anything else really bothered me. I guess the thing
that surprised me, And maybe surprisedn't the right word. But
I've had so many guys come on my show Dan
the Rosstucker Football Podcast, just like you have on your show, right,
And I'm telling you, the only unanimity, the only consensus,
was what all the quarterback gurus I spoke to said

(57:53):
about Jayden Daniels and Drake May. Every guy, Greg Cosell,
Phil Simms, Chase Daniel, we all love Jadan Daniels. He's
the best pure progression reader of the group. He's the
best pure pocket pass we know about him as a runner. Dan.
None of them said positive things about Drake May. I

(58:14):
mean he was called raw. Phil Simms that his tape
was disappointing, misses too many layups, doesn't have the throw
to throw accuracy. It just wild for me. I don't
pretend to be a quarterback guru. I don't sit there
and watch five games and talk about the guy's footwork.
But I have all these guys come on my show.
They all loved Jadan Daniels, they all had major concerns

(58:36):
about Drake May. I just think it's very interesting kind
of wild that those guys went back to back. Yeah,
given you know the feedback I had gotten on both players.

Speaker 1 (58:46):
Well, we had somebody from Pro Football Focus, Trevor Sikima,
and he said, look, I went back and looked the
throws by Jaden Daniels. He goes, he's the quarterback I
have more questions about. He said, he doesn't throw it
over the middle, and the throws that he was really
good at in college are going to be really hard
to complete a high percentage. And he said, so I've
got real concerns about him, which I found interesting. Tim Hasselbeck,

(59:11):
the former quarterback, he loved Drake May loved and you
know from the last couple of months here Orlovsky loved him.
It just feels like there's people who are in your
camp and realize that, okay, maybe you are raw, but
you have that potential to be something a little a

(59:32):
little more special. My problem with this is I would
rather go to Washington than I would in New England
because at least I have some offensive weapons. That's why
Caleb Williams will succeed. I mean, they already have pieces
in place. You get a dooneesa, which I go. I
said to Paulie, I go, you guys are contenders. The

(59:52):
Bears are contenders after last night. But I can't say
that about New England with I wouldn't have taken a
quarterback there, no matter how much I liked him.

Speaker 4 (01:00:02):
You know what's so funny to me about that, Dan,
The people that support Drake may right, and again I
don't pretend to be a quarterback guy. But the people
that support him say, well, he didn't have any receivers
last year in North Carolina. The offensive line wasn't good.
Now you're gonna send them to the Patriots. Have you

(01:00:22):
seen the Patriots?

Speaker 1 (01:00:23):
He could have stayed another year wide receiver, Yeah, stay
at North Carolina another year instead of going to New England.

Speaker 4 (01:00:30):
Yeah. I mean that's not a good fit. That's not
That's maybe maybe the thought process is he's used to
having bad receivers in a bad old line. Maybe that's
why they to him. And I hear these Josh Allen comparisons,
I'm like, Okay, well he's not six five, two fifty.
He's not. He doesn't run over people like Josh Allen.
He doesn't have Josh Allen has like the strongest arm
I've ever seen. You know, like I don't like the

(01:00:53):
Josh Allen comparisons for Drake May. Just because a guy
struggles in some areas, don't tell me he's Josh Allen.
You know how many guys have really improved like Josh
Allen did? Josh Allen Jalen Hurts. Those are the two
guys I can really think of right now that greatly
improved from college and during their NFL career in terms

(01:01:13):
of throwing the ball in accuracy.

Speaker 1 (01:01:15):
The Giants had the opportunity to take their quarterback now.
I was told that they wanted Drake May, they or
they were going to stay put and then they were
going to take a wide receiver. I didn't buy into
the JJ McCarthy we're going one through four. Didn't buy it.
Minnesota got him and it's a good situation for him.

(01:01:39):
So the Giants passed on a quarterback. Your reaction was
what job security?

Speaker 4 (01:01:45):
Yeah? I mean, it just goes back to the same
thing I was talking about with the Falcons. I think
Joe Shane, the GM, Brian Dave All the head coach.
They know last year was a disaster. They know they
have to win this year. Do you have a better
chance to win with JJ mc karthy as a rookie
and all these pedestrian receivers they have, or can you

(01:02:08):
hope that Jones comes back from the injury plays like
he did two years ago and now that you actually
give him a legit explosive receiver. I mean molite Neighbors
is a dude. You watch him. He is fun to watch.
This is their best chance to have a winning season,
to maybe make the playoffs. Wait wait, wait for Gaball

(01:02:29):
and Joe Shane. Let him have those jobs.

Speaker 1 (01:02:31):
No, let me use your logic. If I wanted to
keep my job longer, I would have taken JJ McCarthy
because now you're going to give me the opportunity to reset,
and now I get three or four more years. That's
what you just said. The Falcons are doing. They're ensuring
you get to keep your job because you just drafted
Michael Pennox. So why wouldn't the Giants if the you know,

(01:02:52):
the coaching GM want to hold their job, you take
the quarterback of the future.

Speaker 4 (01:02:56):
Well, I think you would have to go well for
the Giants, otherwise they would move on from them because
they would say, you gave Daniel Jones all that money
and then you moved on from him after a year,
and the rookie quarterback's not looking real promising. I think
the difference. And by the way, the Falcons management they
might only get one year with Pennix, so they might

(01:03:19):
have only bought themselves for sure three years because Cousins
has one hundred million guaranteed the Cousins is their quarterback
the next two years barring injury. Although even that part
of it bothers me. Dan, what he's a top ten pick.
What's gonna happen when Cousins throws three picks on the
radio in Atlanta, They're gonna say, maybe it's time to

(01:03:39):
put the kid in there. Maybe they should put Pennix
in there. They set themselves up for a terrible, terrible situation.

Speaker 2 (01:03:49):
Are you okay?

Speaker 1 (01:03:50):
I think somebody, did you guys say something negative about
Ross with my retirement and if Ross was going to
put his name in the hat Jacob, you know.

Speaker 10 (01:03:59):
His name was thrown around in the room and someone
said something.

Speaker 1 (01:04:01):
Who said something? Ritzy, Fritzy, did you say something negative
about Ross?

Speaker 5 (01:04:06):
Tucker?

Speaker 4 (01:04:06):
LEST think so, Yes he did. Fritzy said I would
spike your drink.

Speaker 11 (01:04:11):
I did say that.

Speaker 17 (01:04:13):
I said that in jest, but I did in fact
say that he'd be most likely to, uh, you know,
try to end things for you.

Speaker 2 (01:04:18):
So I didn't take it in jest.

Speaker 11 (01:04:20):
It was meant to be tongue, and that means.

Speaker 1 (01:04:23):
I know Ross would not do that.

Speaker 9 (01:04:26):
I really hurt.

Speaker 11 (01:04:27):
I apologize.

Speaker 4 (01:04:28):
I was supposed to be a joke ever since I
saw the clip.

Speaker 11 (01:04:30):
Don't do that. You know I'm sensitive and that was
totally a joke.

Speaker 1 (01:04:33):
Although it's hurt, he's sensitive.

Speaker 4 (01:04:36):
My mom was crying about it.

Speaker 11 (01:04:38):
It hurts mother's days as coming up. That was just
very bad time.

Speaker 10 (01:04:42):
And if Ross were going to do something to take
you out, it wouldn't be poisoned. Be something physical, a
pile drive you ddt something like that.

Speaker 4 (01:04:49):
No, but if you I would poison the spicy mustard
on Meat Friday.

Speaker 2 (01:04:53):
I take us all out in one fell smooth. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:04:56):
So you do want to put your name in the
hat with Chris Mannix, Uh you know, public Clay.

Speaker 2 (01:05:00):
I mean, now's your time.

Speaker 4 (01:05:03):
Three and a half years from now sounds like a
long time.

Speaker 1 (01:05:07):
Oh hey, listen, just just tell that to the falcons
and use.

Speaker 4 (01:05:15):
Hey, I will say this, Dan, and you know this
because I've told you this, there's nothing more. My two
favorite things to do in all of my career all
media are call game and fill in for you, my
two favorite things by far. They're just so fun. It's
it's an incredibly good time. So the chance to do

(01:05:36):
that every day, that would be that would be insane.

Speaker 1 (01:05:38):
Somedaysright in three and a half years, what happens first though?

Speaker 4 (01:05:43):
Am I can I be here?

Speaker 1 (01:05:44):
Michael Pennix, Junior Dan, you would be yes, You'd wait
for three and a half years. Thank you, Ross.

Speaker 4 (01:05:52):
Of course great talking with you guys.

Speaker 1 (01:05:54):
That's Ross. Tucker got his own football podcast Westwood one,
