Speaker 7 (03:51):
One those classics Daily Grub on m Moby Bros Podcast.
It's those Classic Kids the Daily Grub on M mob
Brose Podcast.

Speaker 10 (04:13):
What's up, everybody. I'm David Grubbin. It's time for another
edition of Classic Kids on the MLB bro Show podcast
the Mixtape. This baseball season is just over thirty one
percent complete, while over in the NBA the playoffs are
in full swing.

Speaker 11 (04:26):
So to speak.

Speaker 10 (04:28):
We've talked about two sport athletes on Classic Kids. A
few times, Dave Winfield, Bo Jackson, Dion Sanders, and Michael
Jordan come to mind. Jackie Robinson, of course, who excelled
in multiple sports before coming a Hall of Famer. We've
got another one for you today, NAT's Sweetwater Clifton. It
was fifty four years ago today that the New York

(04:48):
Knicks purchased Clifton's contract from the Harlem Globetrotters. Maggy Sweetwater
just the second black player to sign a contract to
the NBA, helping the Knicks kid to the finals as
a twenty seven year old rookie. Clifton would go on
to play for eight seasons, seven in New York and
one with the Detroit Pistons, averaging ten points and eight
rebounds per game in his career. In nineteen fifty seven,

(05:09):
at the age of thirty four, he was named an
All Star, making him the league's oldest ever first time selection.
So what's the connection to baseball, then, Well, During his
offseasons from the Trotters, Nat Clifton spent his time playing
first base for the Chicago American Giants of the Negro Leagues.
He also spent two seasons playing in the minors for
the Cleveland Indians, posting a more than respectable three to

(05:29):
zero seven average. Eighty four of his two hundred and
thirty seven hits went for extra bass, and after retiring
from the NBA, Sweetwater still had some baseball in him
to play.

Speaker 9 (05:39):
He, along with former.

Speaker 10 (05:40):
Globe Trotter's teammate Goose Tatum, returned to the Negro Leagues
and joined the Detroit Clowns for one more season on
the diamond. Clifton would be inducted into the Basketball Hall
of Fame, and his impact on that game is undeniable.
His love for the game of baseball was undeniable as well.
So shout out to another one of the pioneers, Nat Sweetwater.

(06:00):
I'm David Grubb and this has been classic hits. Now
back to the mix. Og Margray always got some to.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
Say going deep with Og Margray every year.

Speaker 12 (06:21):
The mythic romance of the Negro League lives on through
places like the Negro League Baseball Hall of Fame. However,
when you get a chance to watch the few, the proud,
the remaining grows get their shine, well you just gotta
sit back and soak it in.

Speaker 9 (06:34):
So what's the deal?

Speaker 12 (06:35):
Just the mlbog Mark Gray and we get knowledge from
several legendary Negro League grows who you may not know
while I'm going deep for the mixtape. Camdy Yards and
Baltimore holds a unique place in baseball history because of
how it changed the look of venues around the league
back in nineteen ninety two, but earlier this season, the
Orioles gave props to several living Negro League players who

(06:58):
changed the game long before then. Sam Allen split three
years between the Kansas City Monarchs and the Memphis Red
Sox between nineteen fifty seven and nineteen fifty nine before
he's called to serve in the US Army. While there
was no celebration when he finished his time in the military,
to get his flowers at the Yards meant the world
to him.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
Not late did never happens.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
He's always going to be honest the time while you're living.

Speaker 12 (07:24):
Pedro Sierra was part of the Afro Latino invasion that
has taken over the show. He played for the Indianapolis
Clowns and Detroit Stars between nineteen fifty four and nineteen
fifty eight before a long minor league career in the
Washington Senators and Minnesota Twins organization. He too, is glad

(07:45):
that the Negro leagues are finally getting their problems.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
Well, this is something very special because that way people
would recognize it.

Speaker 12 (07:52):
You know who we were, what we did with time passing.
Both Allen and Sierra can now look back and see
how the game is being played today, which is a
lot like the way they did it back.

Speaker 10 (08:03):
In the day.

Speaker 13 (08:06):
The game.

Speaker 12 (08:11):
The game, even Major League Baseball now shown its respect
for the glory days when the players played for the
love of the game as they host the first Negro
League Classic in Birmingham this June. As always, I'm the
MLB og Mark Craig, and I'm going deep for the
mixed team.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
Going og Mark.

Speaker 9 (13:26):
Now back to the mix.

Speaker 16 (13:35):
A couple of bros made a return back from the
IL and already making an impact on the team. Minnesota
Twins in the field of viral Buckson return back to
the lineup on the eighteenth of May, making a noticeable impact.
Bucks his third game back Tuesday versus Washington Nationals, he
helped the team get off the seven game lose the streak,
having an incredible game going two to five two home
runs with d rb on the next He's playing extremely

(13:58):
well since his return seven team that backs five hiss,
four runs two home runs for our be out of
the two ninety four bat and average. Buckson hasn't played
in one hundred games since twenty seventeen due to injuries.

Speaker 9 (14:09):
If he can play in seventy percent of the games this.

Speaker 16 (14:11):
Season, the Twins are being playoff contentions again.

Speaker 9 (14:14):
Headington the American League.

Speaker 16 (14:15):
Was shortstop JP Crawford returned from the ial it Mads
appears back into the lineup May twentieth in a win
versus New York Yankees.

Speaker 9 (14:23):
JP is a very good athlete at the shortstop positions.
He has the.

Speaker 16 (14:27):
Instincts of a cat and very rangey have the six
to two heights, So bringing back a great defender to
a team who's starting to emerge as the favorites in
the division.

Speaker 9 (14:34):
The Manners are a top.

Speaker 16 (14:36):
Ten team and pitching and getting the home runs on
the board, and they were tested early playing against some
great teams the Orioles, the Yankees, the Royals, and responded very.

Speaker 9 (14:44):
Well and win the majority of the series.

Speaker 16 (14:46):
A very tough team in the return of Crawford, who
can get contact on the ball and very dependable on
the defensive end, is a problem.

Speaker 9 (14:53):
But as always, we'll be serving it up all season
long right here.

Speaker 16 (14:57):

Speaker 2 (17:46):
As What's up everybody?

Speaker 18 (17:49):
This is justin B. Truley with the Black Asport on
the MLB Bro Show podcast mixtape. Here's where you get
the latest on the melody the Mount Marauder's course, shopping
with precision and popping out all across the big leagues.

Speaker 9 (17:59):
So let's check the rapport.

Speaker 18 (18:01):
The Stro Show was electric on May twentieth, dazzling the
crowd with his dominance. Marcus Strowman went seven in the
third innings, allowing three hits and one run while sending
six batters down on strikes. He's credited his smooth transition
and success in the Bronx to the chemistry he has
with his other pitchers and how they all genuinely like
each other. And it's showing as they have the best

(18:23):
team ERA at two point eighty seven, with one of
the best pitchers in the MLB and Garrett Cole coming
back to the rotation sooner rather than later. Hunter Green
was back in his hometown in LA pitching against the
Dodgers in front of his family on May nineteen. He
went six and a third innings, allowing only two earned
runs and now has an ERA of three point two

(18:43):
to two. Green was drafted out of Notre Dame High
School in Sherman Oaks, a high school phenom drafted number
two overall in twenty seventeen by Cincinnati. Jordan Hicks showed
his inter ultimate Warrior on May nineteen when he went
on the mat against the Rockies. He ended up throwing
up his pregame meal about an hour before his start,
and his pitching was affected as his velocity was down

(19:05):
in the first few innings. Still, he managed the last
five innings, only allowing one run on three hits and
earning the win and a big congratulations to nationals Ace
Josiah Gray, earning his degree in business and economics with
summa cum laude honors. He left Lemoyne College six years
ago to the MLB, but managed to take classes online

(19:27):
to finish.

Speaker 2 (19:27):
What he started.

Speaker 18 (19:29):
Gray is currently on the IL since April fourth with
a right flex restrain in his elbow, but is expected
to be back between late May and early June. That's
the black age support for this week. This is JP
the rook now back to the mix.

Speaker 9 (19:46):
Or wings obvious A plus.

Speaker 14 (19:49):
Baseball is a game of stats.

Speaker 2 (19:51):
I'm sevestiantball and I'm the numbers of picks.

Speaker 14 (19:58):
Mason Wind has gone off to your host in his
first full season in the major leagues, showing many signs
of superstar potential and at the young age of twenty two,
it's only up from here. Mason struggled to get the
back going in the first tint in the majors last year,
but he has fixed that issue to begin the twenty
twenty four season. So far, he has notched an impressive

(20:18):
one to twenty five water runs created plus early in
the year, while improving his walk and strikeout percentages from
last season. This, paired with his impressive seven defensive runs
saved and zero point seven base running runs above average,
show how all around win can be. With a zero
point eight Fancrafts worse early in the year. Win is
putting together a strong rookie season and he's proven that

(20:40):
he has the tools to do it all with one
of these strong arms and all baseball. Win is electrifying
to watch, and with him being so young, there is
no telling how high the ceiling is.

Speaker 2 (20:50):
Flying rings obvious Plus.

Speaker 14 (20:53):
Baseball is a game of stats. I'm se basketball and
I'm the numbers fans.

Speaker 2 (21:03):
Ryan, keep firing, You're really.

Speaker 9 (21:06):
The best bet.

Speaker 8 (21:08):
This is your man, Ryan Hope from mbbro dot Com
coming at you with Ryan's rationale from the clubhouse, where
I'll pick three winners for this weekend in Major League Baseball.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
Ryan, keep firing.

Speaker 8 (21:21):
Our first matchup takes us to the South side of
Chicago on Friday, but we got Chicago White Sox versus
the Baltimore Orioles. This matchup features Bros sedgis wellon who
will start to heat up after a slow start to
the season, and also Tommy Famo of the White Sox,
who has been on a terriblate with ten hits over
the last twenty. At VATS on Friday, we have Corbyn
Burns versus Chris Flexen on the bump, Burns holds it

(21:44):
down Orioles line up too strong for flexing. As the
Orioles roll.

Speaker 2 (21:48):
On Friday, Ryan keep firing.

Speaker 8 (21:51):
Our next matchup takes us to Denver, Colorado on Saturday,
where we have the Philadelphia Phillies versus the Colorado Rockies.
These two Paul club have two young future star bros
and the Rocky Mountain High.

Speaker 2 (22:03):
On Saturday, Ryan, keep firing.

Speaker 8 (22:06):
Our last matchup takes us to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Old Sunday
or you have the Atlanta Braves versus the Pittsburgh Pirates.
This matchup features bros. Michael Harris was about a two
point fifty on the season with five home runs a
seven stolen bases. Sunday, look for Chris Sale to continue
his sid young campaign season. He's off to a seventy
one start with a two point two ERA. He will

(22:28):
lead the Braves to victory on Sunday.

Speaker 2 (22:31):
Ryan keep firing. You're really the best bets been rational.
Now back to the mix.

Speaker 19 (22:43):
Just spread one time with Brett's reps for MLB bro
Show podcast the Mixtape. Let's talk about number fifty on
the Los Angeles Dodgers, and that's Mookie Betts. We've seen
what he can do. And what is now his eleventh
big league season. His resume speaks for itself. What the
Dodgers have asked him to do, however, is tough. In

(23:03):
the prime of his career, he has moved from the
outfield to become the team starting shortstop. He's not the
first to do it, but what I like about what's
happening is he has welcomed the move.

Speaker 9 (23:14):
He is truly a team player.

Speaker 19 (23:17):
There is a lot of work involved in this though.
He's out there hours before games taking ground balls, and
because of his athleticism, he's going to get better at
that very very quickly. He's going to field. He moves
extremely well. He hasn't played the position regularly in a
long time, so he's relearning and redeveloping some of the
habits that come to guys who naturally who came up

(23:38):
as shortstop and the minor leagues already have The challenge though,
is the throwing. In a recent series against the Reds,
he wasn't as sharp as we'd like to see him.
You gotta make the routine play the first, you gotta
get the fource sided second. Those miscues were bad throws.
He's on the other side of the diamond. Now he's
not at second base, he's not in the out field.

(24:00):
It's a different look and that's where the adjustment has
to be made.

Speaker 9 (24:04):
Bets.

Speaker 19 (24:04):
He'll be the first to tell you that he has
to improve. The good thing is the Dodgers don't need
him to be Ozzie Smith out there. Smith won thirteen
goal gloves. Betts has six, all in the outfield, so
we know he can field. What does have to change
is his fielding percentage. You really don't want to see
him at nine sixty where he currently is as a shortstop.

(24:26):
He's got six errors so far and we're about a
third of the season in, so you're looking at eighteen
nineteen errors for the season. Those numbers have to get
better at the shortstop position. Overall, though, attitude plus athleticism
equals a good Dodger shortstop.

Speaker 10 (24:47):
Al Key, why you're kicking up dust on the ump
and again this lead.

Speaker 6 (24:52):
Don't call me a hater, but you can call me
a pooh poor because I'm crying foul on red shortstop
Ellie de la Cruz's quest to steal one hundred bases
this year.

Speaker 9 (25:05):
Right now, he's on pace for ninety nine. We tip
our cap to him.

Speaker 13 (25:10):
But let's be real, the only reason he's going two
weeks that mark.

Speaker 6 (25:15):
Is because guys are now sliding into pizza boxes.

Speaker 9 (25:19):
That's how big the bases are.

Speaker 13 (25:22):
Baseball made some great rule changes with the shift, with
the pitch clock and with the bases in an attempt
to keep players safe and also increase stolen bases.
