Speaker 3 (00:42):
Welcome to the VC Show. I'm your host, Vince Carter.
We are back at it this week. I have a
very special guest, no teammate, most importantly a great friend
of mine. So get comfortable, kick your feet up. The
VC Show starts now. My guest was a John Wooden
(01:05):
Award winner, a Nate Smith Award winner, consensus All American.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
I'm not done yet.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
As Jersey retired at Saint Joe's two thousand and three
two thousand and four AP Player of the Year, also
to add the twentieth pick in the two thousand and
four NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets. Played fourteen seasons
in all, starting nine currently the GM for the g leagues.
Delaware Blue Coats, Chester High School's own Jamier Nelson.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
Yeah, I know, bro, I know Chester himself. What's going on? Man?
What's up? Man? How you?
Speaker 4 (01:43):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Man, I'm good. How are you doing?
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Man?
Speaker 3 (01:45):
You're You're the guy that's busy. I'm working, but you're working,
working like you. I mean you you have a lot
on your plate with obviously being a GM. Now congratulations
to you know we've talked to Obviously we've talked, but
still congratulations front of everybody else. You're doing work with
the sixers and obviously following your son as well, so
I should be asking how are you.
Speaker 4 (02:06):
I'm good, you know, man, like obviously you know you know.
I have four kids, got three daughters and my son.
My son is the oldest. I have a daughter playing
softball the University of South Florida as a freshman, I know, crazy, right,
daughter in the high school sophomore year, and the sixth grader.
Obviously my son so so busy with that, I mean,
(02:28):
trying to be the best dad, best husband is possible,
but also trying to grow in the world that I'm in.
On the other side, like former players, you know, we
get a bad reputation.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Of whatever you want to call it.
Speaker 4 (02:41):
Like as former players, working there, I got my head down,
I put my hard head on, and I get to work.
And one of the most important things that I understand
is like I don't want anything given to me.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
So I've been like that as as a player, and
I'm like that as a human being.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
So just being transparent, Like I really enjoy working with
the G League guys and the staff. I feel responsible
for those guys and girls just in terms of getting
opportunities to get to where they want to go. And
we've had a great or nice amount of call ups
this year. Actually for me, like winning and development is
(03:19):
like one A one B. So just being able to
see five six guys get either two ways or NBA contracts,
or we even had a guy get a pretty lucrative.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
Deal over in Europe.
Speaker 4 (03:32):
So it's just seeing those opportunities being in front of
these guys and them being able to showcase their talents
when opportunity to come here in the g It makes
me happy because that's exactly.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Why I'm doing it.
Speaker 4 (03:46):
And obviously I want to bring as much talent as
I can to the six years organization into the program.
And you know, over the last three four years I've
been able to help out in that way for you being.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
A point guard, and obviously you're seeing the way the
new NBA if you would, you know, to us, it's
kind of the new NBA. Is it different for you
seeing like bigs now stretching the floor?
Speaker 1 (04:10):
What shoots?
Speaker 3 (04:13):
That's fair too, that's fair, you know, yeah for but
even yeah, that's fair, Like you stop me that.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
I don't know where to go with that.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
But like some of the guys that were considered that,
I mean six ten, I mean you could look at
six ten now and those guys are threes. But we're
talking about like the bigs now we had stretched forwards.
We had like Rashard Lewis type guys who was stretched forwards.
But now you're seeing if you would stretch five. Is
it different for you? I mean, obviously you're justed because
of your role, But is it different for you because
for a very long time you played with a young
(04:43):
yo kitch. You also played with a dominant big like
Dwight who was strictly in the post. Is it different
for you now on the other side kind of scouting
for or you've adjusted.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
So the funny thing is, I tell you all the time,
Joker is one of put like, yes, I'm very fortunate
to have a ton of great teammates and Joker is
one of them. And being on a team with that dude,
I learned how to not play pick and roll.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
Growing up in the league, I was a pick and
roll player.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
Give a lot of credit coach Chris Finch, who was
the officeive coordinator for a few years or maybe a
year or so in Denver. I was like, Chris, I'm
a pick and roll player. I need picking rolls. And
he just was like, I'm gonna say, He's like, shut
up and pass the ball and cut because you got
this big dude who can make every play, make it
easy for you.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
And this was his first to say.
Speaker 4 (05:37):
So this was probably Joker's second or third year. Okay, yeah,
so I brought him. Just go back, let me go back.
So I brought him just like you member. I used
to do the whole team bonding thing, bring everybody in
and all that. So I, you know, don't have team
personnel there other than the trainers, right, just just make
sure we're safe. He comes in, he's doing everything. He
(05:59):
doesn't really know English. Well, it's a language barrier. The
team calls me, it's like, hey, who looks good, Like,
you know, my idea of it was like to get
kick guys into like get in shape. I was like, man,
the foreign kid is going to be an All Star.
I just don't know when. I think maybe when he
understands English better. I said, but he is the best
player here right now. They were like, no way. And
(06:21):
obviously Use was there, he was already gone. Nirk was
not there. He wasn't here. He didn't come. I think
he had he was still on the team.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
Was on the team.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
Okay, so yeah, that's what I'm saying. He's still so he
was still on the team.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
Okay. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
So so it was, you know, like we had a
little logjam there at the five with the two young
European players, and I remember this, you know you I
give I give Nirk a lot of credits. NRK was
really good. I mean he still isn't really good. Joker
was special, special, like just call it what it is.
And he exactly He's exactly what Denver needed in one
(06:55):
of at the time. So that that dude, like he
changed my mind. He he changed my mind in terms
of like basketball, how it's going to be played moving forward.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
That's kind of when it became positionless.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
What's crazy is I remember us playing in Denver. I
think Denver was in Denver the first time I was
in Memphis and Mark Gasol. He had Mark so frustrated.
I mean he was still young. Like I said, they
had Nurkics there. But when he would check in the game,
he was a menace and he would just get out
(07:29):
of your skin. But you can just see the skills already,
and you know, and he didn't care. He throw his
body around whatever. He's like, man, who is this dude?
Like you know, because obviously he was coming off the
bench as a backup at the time for Nurkic, and
then all of a sudden, I mean, he would play
more minutes and I'm just like, oh, this guy's gonna
be pretty good. And then next thing you know, they
(07:51):
trade him, like yep, it is. It's his show and
then the rest is history. But like I said, so
you saw it from the beginning.
Speaker 4 (07:59):
I saw from the beginning. I'm not going to obviously
I didn't discover them, but I.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
Know what I'm saying. But you could see I can
see the talent like you can see the talent, and
like I.
Speaker 4 (08:06):
Said, where the game was going when it started to
become positionless. At the time, I evinced. I literally started
to end bounce the ball, throw to him, let him
bring it up. And I was I started like setting
screens for people back door cuts, and I'm in thirteen fourteenth,
you know, twelve thirteenth year, right, I'm trying to squeeze
all limit.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
Right. I just figured I just need to cut.
Speaker 4 (08:31):
I can get four points from cutting, I can get
two three's from standing in the corner, and I can
get another bucket doing something else. So my job was
easy and bounce the ball. And I figured out I
never was a cutter. So what I started doing, I
was like, man, I'm not as fast. I'm not as
quick anymore. I just need to like start higher, make
a football move and run by my guy.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
And somehow either he's going to hit me or he's
going to find an open man. And how crazy is
that for you?
Speaker 3 (08:56):
Being that was your expertise in something you would you
were the set up artist if you would, for players,
and now you're on the receiving end of that and
the guy who's doing it is is your center.
Speaker 4 (09:08):
Yeah, it's different, man, Like because I used my center.
It's like the guy who helped me get my guy
off of me. So now it's like, Okay, I had
to like retrain my brain and like thinking, it's like,
how do I help the team and not be the
veteran who's like distrontor or the.
Speaker 1 (09:25):
Lawyer in the locker room.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
And I just like, you know, I roll with it,
like I try to help lead the team in a
way where you know, I try to put him in
direction where Coach Malone wants to go. And I felt
like I did a good job. I think I did
a good job and mentoring the guys. But yeah, I
was happy to like give the ball to that dude
because I knew he was going to make the right
play every time, whether we completed the player or not,
(09:48):
or made the shot or not, he was trying to
make the right player.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
Yeah, and you see that.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
Now he's a walking triple double and I think he's
pretty much a lock to win his third MVP. You know,
obviously Joel going down, I thought Joel was playing some
of the best basketball, and obviously Joker was right there.
But right now he's he's he's the best player in
the world. Man, He's one of the best players in
(10:13):
the world. If not the best in the world, I'm.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
Gonna challenge that because I think Joel is right there too.
I think he's no, that's what I'm saying.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
I mean, I really believe that Joel can lead the
league in any statistical category.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
He will agree, you know, seeing it up close.
Speaker 4 (10:27):
He's just so talented man Like I like those two guys,
like we can discuss and.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
It's going to be back and forth and you can
day every day. And that's what I'm saying. Joelle going
down opened the door for it to be a clear
path for Joker in my opinion, because the way Joel
was playing in the beginning year before he got hurt,
it was nothing to talk about. In my opinion, I
thought he was the front runner for MVP and he
(10:53):
was going to win it hands down.
Speaker 4 (10:55):
Yeah, and he and he and you know, when you
look at the way he was playing, he was doing
it within the flow. He was just sofficient and so effective.
I mean, it didn't make a difference if teams double
team Beam, if teams did whatever. But you know, coach
Nurse did a great job of putting him in positions
to score as well. So you look, at the end
of the day, with those two guys. If they're healthy,
it's always going to be They're always going to be.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
An MVP talks and contention. They just tell me what
you think about Maxie. Man, he's one of my favorite players.
I hit him up some time ago, two years ago,
i want to say, and told him to keep his
head up. I think it was after the playoffs. I'm like,
you're on your way to be a star. I was
a fan and I thought he in due time he
(11:38):
was going to emerge to be an All Star and
obviously one of the better players. If not, you know,
one of the too go to guys on the sixers.
And here we are today, what are your thoughts on
on Maxi and you know where have you seen the
most growth from his game in the past year or two.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
Well, the first thing I'll say about Maxie is he
like up the room when he walks in, he's smiling,
he's he's always himself, and you need that. You got
an eighty two game season, you know, January February.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
You know that's when you're like, oh, man, I still
got how many games left?
Speaker 4 (12:16):
The dude is always in the gym, always working, always smiling,
and his energy is infectious, so that that, to me
is the number one attribute of or for however you
want to say, MAXI.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
But he keeps getting better because of that.
Speaker 4 (12:29):
I think his work ethic, like he's the first one
on the floor, last one off, works hard in practice,
shoot around.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
You know, we communicate here and there.
Speaker 4 (12:37):
I tend to leave guys alone like during the season,
you know, but he also listens.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
I'll say, hey, you know this, this and that and
the other.
Speaker 4 (12:46):
And it doesn't even have to be like making shots,
mission shots, moves or whatever, could be body language. And
he listens. He understands. He wants to be that guy,
he wants to be embraced as that guy. And he
continues to get better every year. You see improvement. Every year,
you see him taking on a bigger challenge. And it's cliche,
but like, honestly, this guy is the limit. For this kid,
(13:07):
Like he's fast, he's athletic, he can shoot, he's become
a better defender, he's a better passer, and he's a
phenomenal person. So that boy can finish with the best
of them. Yeah, like his touches. I don't know if
I've ever seen somebody go as fast as him, and
have the touch that he has around the basket, So
I know I didn't. I mean, I, you know, had
(13:29):
I was more of a power player. But that dude
is special and he's showing the world that he's special.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
And he's one of the young talents of today's game obviously.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
SGA. I mean, there's there's so many, but I mean.
Speaker 3 (13:44):
You just look at you know, if you think about
when we played, we always talk about veteran teams that
usually rise to the top, tops in the East and West.
But if you look at today's game right now, OKAC
first in the West, Timberwolves, third in the West, Pelicans
fifth in the West, Sack sixth in the West.
Speaker 1 (14:05):
That's that's four or.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Five teams, four teams right there that have young talent,
you know pretty much. I mean when I say young,
when I say young people, I'm talking about in early twenties,
early to mid twenties, like not just mid to you know,
still in their twenties, mid to late twenties. We're talking
about early in their twenties, led by you know, and
are the leaders. And there are tops of the of
(14:26):
the West and in the East, Calves third, Magic, fifth, Pacers, seventh,
you know, like a Halliburton. So have you been impressed
of What are your thoughts of what we're seeing in
today's game now there's not a lot of defense, a
lot of scoring.
Speaker 1 (14:41):
Well, what have been your thoughts?
Speaker 4 (14:43):
I enjoyed, man, And you know, I love seeing this
competition in general, seeing these young guys compete.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
I mean, they are a little more friendly than what
we were back in the day.
Speaker 4 (14:55):
I was always a dude who liked to last and
joke on the floor, but when it came down to
like I was serious, I wanted to win, would do
the same thing.
Speaker 1 (15:04):
I mean, you can't knock a person for who they are, right.
Speaker 4 (15:09):
But at the same time, the level of talent that
we're seeing in the NBA, the scale level in terms
of the scoring packages and passing packages. Again, defenders are taller,
more athletic, long like, it's just.
Speaker 1 (15:22):
I mean, look at the magic what they start they
start six did like or better.
Speaker 4 (15:28):
It's crazy the amount of length that's on the floor now.
But then you look at you like, well, such and
such score forty. I'm like, I don't know how he
scored forty other than just making shots. No guys learned
how to create space better than we knew how to
create well for you, it was easy. Like one thing
about you. I was like, yo, I can get to
do the ball. He can get a shot off ards anybody.
(15:50):
That's just how natural or a score you are. For me,
I needed to pick and roll. I needed something, you know,
different things, But like these guys only need anything. It's
there's so many guys that can score the ball in
such an easy way. Is it's scary, Like I'm scary and.
Speaker 1 (16:06):
I'm gonna say this, bro.
Speaker 3 (16:07):
They to add to that, these young guys understand how
they can either draw files or what a defender cannot
do meaning can't touch them.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
They can eat up the space.
Speaker 3 (16:18):
They know how to manipulate situations, and it's just it's
a hats off to them, you know. And there could
be the great debate on Obviously I'm all for the
old school because I mean, you think about what we
came from hand checking, you know, blah blah blah to
where it is now.
Speaker 1 (16:33):
It's a different game.
Speaker 3 (16:34):
But at the same time, whatever the rules are, these
guys are able to take advantage of it to put
up numbers that they're putting up. So I'll never knock
the hustle for that, so, you know, shout out to
these guys because they're getting it done.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (16:47):
I never I never get into comparing errors because we'll
never know.
Speaker 1 (16:52):
I don't. I don't compare Lebron Mike.
Speaker 4 (16:54):
I mean I can kind of like compare Kobe to
both of those guys because he played against both. That's
ultimately like he's my favorite player, you know, like people like, well,
if Mike played in this area, he'll get this. I'm
sure he would if Lebron pay in that air. You
don't know any of that, right, But at the same time,
it's like, I really enjoy watching these guys.
Speaker 1 (17:14):
They're like, listen, I'm talking to Vince Carter. You're one of.
Speaker 4 (17:17):
Them, Like, you know what I mean, just one of
these guys. I'm like, Yo, this dude is one of
these dudes. Who man, you know what I mean. So
it's fun to watch these guys play. And like I said,
their scoring package is different than.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
What we had.
Speaker 4 (17:32):
They have all the moons, all the footwork, just the
footwork in general is different. Obviously, Yet, like you said,
we played together. You know, let's talk about Orlando.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
What are some fond memories that you had obviously playing
for the Magic. I know, correct me is a month
a month or two ago you were honored for the Magic.
I wasn't invited, but I heard about it. No, it's
all good, but I heard about it. I heard it
was nice. Uh, you know, I was chilling. But uh,
(18:13):
you know, what are some fun memories for you playing
in that Magic uniform? I mean playing in the finals
and then obviously us the next year, you know, but
but you know, share some of those.
Speaker 1 (18:26):
Memories, man.
Speaker 4 (18:27):
Man, Like I said, I had so many great teammates.
You you are for sure at the top of that.
It's just appreciate that. You know you're saying that because
we're here.
Speaker 1 (18:36):
You already know you know how we are.
Speaker 4 (18:38):
Man, it was fun man Like, Like I said, we
didn't win a championship, but we came damn close.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
Man.
Speaker 4 (18:47):
No, I don't care what people say. Nobody wanted to
play us. We were dominant on both ends of the floor.
Stay had us prepared. He had us over prepared times
three right and read. Everything on the board was filled
with letters. And I appreciate that now because I see
the game, I see the game a different way because
of that, I see the game a different way because
(19:08):
of that, because of the way stand prepared us. But
just just like how to, how to, how to, fans
in the city embraced us, man, like you know, we
walking around like, hey, it was fun. When I say this,
you're gonna laugh because you're gonna remember it like like
it was yesterday.
Speaker 3 (19:22):
But I mean, like you said, the city embraced us.
We gave them a show. We played hard, we had fun.
We literally you know, for you guys.
Speaker 4 (19:30):
That for you guys that didn't really see us play
or didn't well, I hope you guys would see us
when we would come to your your arena.
Speaker 3 (19:39):
But we had the Magic Show, all right. And the
Magic Show was led by A Yeah, Anthony Johnson, A
J and Jason Williams, mostly Anthony Johnson first. But this
this is when you know, I've known jay Will White
Chocolate for a very long time, but I think for
me that was the first time really get and to
(20:00):
see the real personality of Jay Will. Because some of
the stuff that we got him to do, I will admit,
I don't know if you will admit it. There was
times that we took the Magic Show a little.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
Too far, way too far.
Speaker 3 (20:14):
Oh my goodness, I mean, like literally, so the Magic
Show for you guys who don't recall it, we would
come out for layups and it's really.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
Starting to like it was. It was like a it
was a performance. It was like.
Speaker 4 (20:29):
It was literally a five minute performance. Everybody would get
introduced and had to do something. And it went from
layups to where white Chocolate ended up in the stands
shooting jump shots to jump hooks, jump hooks, like in
the stands.
Speaker 1 (20:43):
This is before the game. This is before the game.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
And I knew and I can I can hear, you know,
I mean I can see if I'm on the other
side being on TV now, like man, they take they
don't take the game series.
Speaker 1 (20:54):
I know that's what people will say.
Speaker 3 (20:55):
Like if you look at because it got to a
point like, yo, we're going way too far with this.
But once the game started, like you said, we laughing, joke,
had a good time, but we had guys that locked
in and got it done, you know what I'm saying.
So because we're a very good basketball team, I blame
you, you and the captain that.
Speaker 4 (21:12):
Too, because I started it. I started it, and like everybody.
Speaker 1 (21:17):
Ran with it.
Speaker 4 (21:17):
I was like I was like, I can't like, after
like the fifth time we did it, I was like,
I can't believe we're doing it.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
And you look down at the other team. They stopped
layups and watch this. Watch it.
Speaker 3 (21:27):
Because it got to the point we were lifting j
Will up for him to do windmill dunks.
Speaker 4 (21:32):
Listen, somebody, it got crazy when somebody like basically carried
him in the air from the fifth Yeah, that's how
crazy it was. That's what that's what it got. Well,
him shooting out of the tunnels and in the stands
is winning. That's when coaching staff was like, all right, nothing,
we need to doubt list back a little bit.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
But we were winning and we took care of business. Obviously.
Speaker 4 (21:54):
That year, we ran through Charlotte, ran through Atlanta to
where like literally won't name the players, but the players.
Speaker 3 (22:02):
Like just they told just to go ahead and get
this over with. You remember, Yeah, it's like, just go ahead,
get this over with. And then we went into a
tough Boston team that put us out in six and
so be it. We also played with a guy who's
doing great things right now by the name of JJ Reddick. Yeah,
you know he has this podcast with Lebron right now.
(22:23):
Rookie JJ Reddick. I know he told us a couple
of stories, but what was rookie JJ Reddick like?
Speaker 4 (22:30):
So rookie JJ Reddick, he's different than right now, totally different, bro.
But I took a liking to JJ early and we
remain friends.
Speaker 1 (22:45):
And he was just lost.
Speaker 4 (22:48):
I think I think he was just lost man coming
into a situation where probably his first time.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
In his career, he didn't play much.
Speaker 4 (22:54):
You know, he was he was the dude in college
basketball and I kind of went through a to my
rookie year. I just didn't get on the floor as
much as I would like to have gotten on.
Speaker 1 (23:03):
But he was a character. He was a character.
Speaker 4 (23:06):
I remember he said he just take a backpack and
go climb mountains or something.
Speaker 1 (23:11):
Yes, So you know, he and I and I think
this went it happened.
Speaker 4 (23:14):
I think he and I had a long talk and
I was just like, yo, if you keep this up, bro,
like you might be out the league. And not saying
I deserve credit for anything like that, because I don't.
He deserves every bit of credit for changing and becoming
who we all knew who he could be as a
professional basketball player person and now analysts like the dude
(23:35):
is like.
Speaker 1 (23:37):
You know what I mean real quick, and we're going
to move on.
Speaker 3 (23:40):
What do you remember about getting the opportunity to play
in the finals.
Speaker 4 (23:45):
Yeah, so it was a situation. Obviously, I got hurt,
and I'm a hard worker. So I did my rehab
triple time, quadrupleton. I remember how many times I can
do it. I'm like, you remember my guy, Ed. I'm like, Ed,
we're back in the gym. We're back in the gym.
Speaker 1 (24:00):
It was tired. It was like, man, it got to
the point of me. It got to the point me
Ed practice going on.
Speaker 4 (24:06):
We in there shooting darts because we id we have
so many times like he like, yo, you gotta rest.
So we had we had a blowgun. We're doing all
types of stuff in that jone. So I come back.
But again I asked all my teammates. I said, look,
I can play, but I won't play unless you guys
think I should play. And each and every player said
(24:26):
coach said I should play. So I played like if
one person would have said no, I wouldn't have played.
That's how how I took it. You know, do I
regret it.
Speaker 1 (24:35):
I don't. I don't regret it. I don't. I don't
look at it any different.
Speaker 3 (24:39):
It's a chance of a lifetime, bro, And I understand, like,
I mean, it's and I really thought that following year.
You know, we've had the conversation, so I know how
you felt about it, and I thought we really had
a legit shot to get back.
Speaker 4 (24:51):
There and you know, go forward again. I mean, very
good basketball team that we had.
Speaker 3 (24:56):
So I'm gonna ask you this about we talked about
you and the GM Blue Coats. Do you have aspirations
of being a gym in the NBA and or a coach?
Speaker 4 (25:05):
So right now I'm taking the track of being a GM.
I'm never gonna schet the coaching door. I've been offered
coaching jobs every year every year, and I'm like, I
really enjoy what I'm doing. I'm continuing to help people.
But if you look at it and you understand the
role I am coaching, just not the way an actual
coach doesn't. So I'm involved in like as much as
(25:26):
I want to be involved in. I mean, I again, like,
I help coach longerbardy out as much as I can
without stepping on toes, the players, medical staff, whoever. Just
bringing my experience to those guys. And girls to help
them grow. But yeah, one day my goal is to
be running NBA team.
Speaker 1 (25:44):
That's dope.
Speaker 4 (25:46):
Hey you know it's March madness, right yeah, man, okay,
just check it.
Speaker 1 (25:50):
And do you watch I.
Speaker 3 (25:53):
Asked this in really joking more than anything, But do
you watch a lot of college basketball other than and TCU?
Speaker 1 (26:01):
Yeah? Man, that's my job in Saint Joe's maybe, But
like seriously, like.
Speaker 4 (26:05):
I watched, I watch a ton of college basketball, but
I always like again, like I said, I love no,
I know, I know it's a joke, but I gotta
be real, Like.
Speaker 1 (26:13):
Do you watch this play?
Speaker 4 (26:14):
I don't want you to get me I don't want
you to get me fired saying you know what I mean.
I do watch a ton of college basketball. You watch
Carolina play? Yeah, I watched Carolina play. So that's a lot.
Speaker 3 (26:24):
Okay, So you watch TCU and you watch you watch
college basketball, but you don't watch this play.
Speaker 1 (26:29):
That's cool, But that's cool. It's cool. You're talking about
that Sky Blue team? Yeah, yeah, that one. How has
it been for you watching me?
Speaker 3 (26:40):
And I know like you've you've been watching, you know
obviously now for some years.
Speaker 1 (26:44):
Now, But like I watched I have his team.
Speaker 3 (26:48):
I have TCU in my app or one of my
apps where it pops up when they play, so I
make sure I'm always watching them. How has it been
for you watching him play? And do you get caught
up in it? I mean, we're parents, so and we've
played in this league, so it's easy to like, why
don't they do this?
Speaker 1 (27:05):
But has it been fun for you watching?
Speaker 3 (27:08):
Understand what I'm asking when I'm asking this question. Has
it been fun for you watching him play? Because I
tell you what, he way more athletic than you, bro,
don't take it personally.
Speaker 1 (27:17):
It's been.
Speaker 4 (27:18):
It's been because I remember you sent me pictures of
your video of him dunking in high school and I
watched him play. He was on the road somewhere on
the break. It just took up. I was like, Yo,
he way more athletic than you. How's it been for
you watching him play?
Speaker 1 (27:33):
Yo? Listen, bro, let me tell you one thing.
Speaker 4 (27:36):
It's been surreal, man, like knowing where he came from,
baseball player, put the bat down, played backball his junior
year and senior high school. Didn't play much those two
years because of like small little injuries, and I like
me and the dad I am gonna protected him and
then going to college. I'm like, I didn't think I
say this Honestly, I didn't think he was a Division
one basketball player, but I knew he was a Division
(27:58):
one baseball player. So he's working out in the summer
five six hours a day on something. He's in a
gymp like last time, I'm like, hey, man, you need
to take a break. Bro, He's like, no, I got
to keep going. So he's hungry for success and him
playing in the best conference in the country, the Big
Twelve word, I mean got nine teams in it, and
(28:22):
nine teams and that Way Tournament. Right man said that
was a straight face, Okay, I mean cool, can are
you that?
Speaker 1 (28:30):
Listen?
Speaker 4 (28:31):
Nine teams in NC the Way Tournament. So I didn't
know what to expect. But he's held his own. He's
done a great job of helping that team get to
where they are now. I'm happy to see where he is,
and I still think the best basketball is in front
of him, just because he has so much to learn.
Speaker 1 (28:48):
He's not an AAU kid.
Speaker 4 (28:50):
He played a year and a half of AAU basketball
his entire life, you know, he so he has way
more games to go like a lot of guys have
more games than him, he has more workouts, So people
see the potential.
Speaker 1 (29:01):
I see it.
Speaker 4 (29:01):
I see it now. I didn't see I'm not gonna lie.
I don't see it in the beginning. But this is
me being transparent. But the one thing I can say,
a couple of weeks ago, I got to see my
daughter on ESPN plus play softball and living my son
on ESPN.
Speaker 1 (29:16):
I was like, this is.
Speaker 4 (29:16):
Crazy that you but listen, I didn't know whether to
be happy or like, damn, I'm old, Like now this
hell and it doesn't bring back fond memories for you
because obviously twenty something twenty years ago, you were the
best college basketball player.
Speaker 3 (29:35):
You know, we read your accolades earlier and contensu Soul American,
you know, AP player the year so and forth?
Speaker 1 (29:41):
Like does that like?
Speaker 3 (29:42):
You know, man like, I was once in his shoes
playing at Saint Joe's doing what I do, and now
your kids are in college playing on TV consistently.
Speaker 4 (29:53):
It's crazy, man Like, it's crazy to like click on
the TV after a good, you know, long day of work.
Speaker 1 (29:58):
I'm like, all right, me grab a glass of wine
and watch my kid on TV. You know what I mean.
It's like.
Speaker 4 (30:04):
It's definitely in the beginning, you know, I'm like, all right,
whatever because he you know, he was close closer to home.
Speaker 1 (30:10):
I can drive and everything. But it's different when you
hear it on TV.
Speaker 4 (30:13):
Here announce atum and this upcoming weekend, like you know,
them playing in and ce do Way Tournament.
Speaker 1 (30:21):
My favorite coach is going to do the game. So
I'm like, this is crazy, you know what I mean.
Speaker 4 (30:26):
Like he's like, yo, I I you are you in Indianapolis.
I'm like yeah, He's like, I'm doing the game. That's
staying in Gundy, right. I'm like, I'm like, man, this
is crazy. Stands all this dude when he was a
you know, baby baby. Yeah, like crazy. So I can
imagine like when people say things to me like I
remember him at of that age, that's when I start
like getting chills come like this is the same little
(30:47):
kid who I used to smack in the back of
the head when you do something crazy in the house,
you know what I mean. So I'm definitely happy and
proud of him, proud of all my kids.
Speaker 1 (30:56):
Man.
Speaker 3 (30:56):
And I mean it's just it's just saying I think
college basketball this year the team that I think that's
gonna win it. I think Carolina has a very good chance,
but I also think Yukong has a chance. I think,
but I also think anybody can lose this year. It's
just on the men's side. On the men's side, I
(31:17):
just think it's all it's up and up for Grass
and I like that.
Speaker 4 (31:21):
It's been like that all year for me, Like just
being on a road scouting certain players and just watching
certain teams, you can kind of see it unfolding where
like we're to get to where we are now at
this point of the year, where nobody knows who's gonna
win the championship. It's a lot of parody, it's a
lot of uncertainty. It's a lot of teams who can
creep up and become sleepers. And look, it's every game
(31:44):
is a one game series, so anything can happen. Anything
can happen, end of the game, beginning of the game,
team goes on a twenty old run, whatever can happen.
So I'm looking forward to it again. I'm obviously rooting
for my son. I'm rooting for him and his team.
I'm gonna be there with my purple long.
Speaker 1 (32:03):
You know what, I mean that's how on wave the tack.
Speaker 3 (32:07):
Hey, as you shaid, I watched Eddie house Man his
son hit the hit the Gamni game winner, and just
it's it's I mean, it makes me laugh because I know,
like I played with Eddie, Eddie house he was my
teammate and he's a fierce competitor as well, and you know,
play with you and to play with like a lot
of the dads that are going you know, seeing their
(32:27):
kids do Jermaine O'Neil played against them, seeing his kids,
like seeing all of our kids do well, and you know,
seeing excitement in them for their kids doing well. Uh,
you know, I'm I'm going through it myself. My daughter's
my oldest is a freshman, My youngest is, you know,
playing tournament.
Speaker 1 (32:43):
He's a he's a golfer. He's playing tournaments and stuff
like that.
Speaker 3 (32:46):
So it's just it's nerve racking for me because I
want them to do well because of the work, like
you said, putting in. But it's just awesome to see
friends or former teammates of mine, you know, enjoying the
moments of their kids' success. So man, shout out to
you and enjoy that for real. I just hope they
don't run into us. I don't even know if y'all
are not bracket, but you know whatever, I hope they
(33:06):
do well. But also, since we're talking about tournament women's
college basketball right now.
Speaker 1 (33:13):
It's crazy.
Speaker 3 (33:16):
Must see TV. Yes, I saw a quick quick blurb.
I didn't you know, I didn't read it. But how
their tickets and the demand for tickets to watch these
young women play this year is more in demand than
men the men's side, which is it's crazy because it's
(33:36):
never been that way, but now it is.
Speaker 1 (33:38):
So it's crazy to think.
Speaker 3 (33:40):
But when you sit back and think about it, some
of the names you throw out, like becoming household name
of some of these kids are freshmen, and of course
obviously Caitlyn Clark and you know, doing what she does.
But like it's just it's crazy and I will be
tuned in.
Speaker 4 (33:56):
No, me too, and definitely for me over the last
however many years. I mean, I have three daughters, right
so selfishly I want them to play sports. You know,
I love doing the girl dad thing.
Speaker 1 (34:08):
And what it is like.
Speaker 4 (34:09):
I enjoy going outside throwing the ball softball my girls
because all through them to play softball and they can
throw football like other than most guys. They can throw,
they can shoot basketball, So we get the bond in
a way that.
Speaker 1 (34:22):
I never would imagine being a growl dad. Right.
Speaker 4 (34:26):
So now, like watching women's sports for me, because I'm
a basketball guy, especially basketball, I enjoy it, man like
I've always enjoyed women's basketball.
Speaker 1 (34:36):
The level, just like the men.
Speaker 4 (34:38):
You look at, the skill level has gone up and
it's going to continue just because I think what they're
exposed to and the way they you know, with sciences
and the way these trainers are now like women basketball, and.
Speaker 3 (34:52):
The way they think too, they think different like they
train like. You know, look how pro teams like Don
Staley we've seen and not not just South Carolina, We've
seen other teams, they don't practice with the girls anymore.
They got they bring guys in now. It's it's a
different mentality. And you know, you talk about the parody
the skill level, Well let's also talk about the If
(35:14):
you look at the top earning athletes in college basketball
for n I L. You're seeing a lot of women
up there over over the men. Obviously, you know, guys
like Kayleb Williams and football, he's making the next next level,
but Caitlyn is cleaning up.
Speaker 1 (35:30):
I'm sure.
Speaker 3 (35:31):
Juju Angel rees like, I mean, it's I mean, it's
a laundry list of you know, correctly, I mean it's the.
Speaker 4 (35:39):
Thing though, This is the thing they should be because
if it's if it's no them, it's no college basketball.
Speaker 1 (35:44):
Said again, we.
Speaker 3 (35:45):
Wouldn't be talking about them right now if they were
who they are and doing what they're doing.
Speaker 4 (35:49):
They deserve a piece of the pie, and I hope
they continue to get more and more because it's always
it's always been my thing, like coaches being a coach, right,
you need Jimbi's and Joe's. People always think it's the
ex's and o's. Yeah, some coaches are really good at
their job, really good managing teams. But if you don't
have the players, you don't have the talent. Like why
(36:12):
would somebody put a team on TV where it's going
to generate a ton of money for whomever?
Speaker 1 (36:17):
Right, these kids should be getting the money.
Speaker 4 (36:19):
And of course, like, yeah, my son is out of
my pocket, like it should be like that, Like he's
playing a sport, he's doing a great thing for a university.
Speaker 1 (36:28):
Like these these girls have.
Speaker 4 (36:31):
They're more than deserving of what they're getting, they should
be getting more, right so and people can say what
they want, like, look, I didn't get a dime, but
I'm happy to like promote the sport for these for
these young men and women to get money.
Speaker 3 (36:46):
Okay, you did not get a dime, tis true, But
let's just go back for a second Jamie and Nelson
senior year, going into his senior year wave top five
in possible, you know, player of the Year, All American,
all of this stuff. Can you imagine you with the
(37:09):
nil back in your your junior year, Vince.
Speaker 4 (37:13):
You know, I'm a very humble person, man, but I'm
gonna tell you this, I would have been Scruce McDuff. Listen,
the amount of the amount of like just just like
thinking back the amount of notoriety that we got. And
it was no social media, right, I'm not like huge
(37:34):
on social media and doing like that. I'll post stuff
here and there whatever, but like I would miss McDuff.
I would have been I would have had a safe
in my house, big ol' sae. I would have been swimming.
I would have been swimming in some good change, you know.
But I'm happy that my career is or has been
what it has been so again, like.
Speaker 3 (37:54):
I know, but it's fun for us to talk about
it because I sit back, I get asked the question
all the time as well. Could I imagine being a
part of NIL during my time in Carolina? I was like,
even if it wasn't nationally, just locally, being in Chapel
Hill in the Triangle area and you know the surrounding
(38:16):
areas of like, I cannot imagine, and we're beloved already
obviously we weren't making a dime, So just imagine, like
for you, imagine you walking around like man, come.
Speaker 4 (38:29):
On stop, I mean if I had to put a
number on it like people, Okay, yeah, I mean even
back then.
Speaker 1 (38:40):
Let me see.
Speaker 3 (38:40):
I'm not sure I could be wrong when I say this,
but I think Caleb Williams USC quarterback pulled in somewhere
like nine ten million.
Speaker 1 (38:48):
I ain't getting that.
Speaker 3 (38:52):
That's crazy, Like I can say, I think he pulled
in last year, this past season or this year like
somewhere in there. You're saying, so you think about it
like this, Saint Joseph five, No, No, Saint Joseph's small, small.
Speaker 1 (39:06):
School, right so three. I mean.
Speaker 4 (39:12):
Just the thought of me transferring probably could have like
you know, oh yeah, collective and everything. I say high
high figures to low seven figures, I say, I say,
I mean.
Speaker 1 (39:26):
You're a guarantee.
Speaker 3 (39:27):
Like if I'm talking about like you were up for
National Player the year, even if you didn't, if you
started with low like a mill you know, at the
beginning of the year, about mid season alone with the
buzz that, Yeah, that changes, it changes a lot.
Speaker 1 (39:43):
Like it's going to change for everyone.
Speaker 3 (39:45):
Like it changed I'm sure for everybody else because either
people didn't know or was little hesitant or whatever the
case may be, or just dragging the feet to all
of a sudden, you know what, I need to be
on this train as well, because he has the potential
to be National Player the year. Yeah, when you know
when in the conference whatever. So I mean, I thank
(40:06):
you somewhere to three to five. And you might be right,
you might be I might be selling myself short. But
I look, I really couldn't imagine.
Speaker 1 (40:15):
I couldn't imagine. I mean I might have had a
billing something like that. Real, it's it's already happened, its due,
it's doing that.
Speaker 4 (40:24):
You saw, you saw, Yeah, what you're talking about. They
gotta get what they got, They gotta get what they can, man.
I absolutely, they deserve it.
Speaker 1 (40:34):
Man. They out there working like blood, sweat, tears, like
you know, they sacrifice it man.
Speaker 4 (40:39):
Like people think playing a sport at the collegiate level
is easy, Like, yeah, you still got to go to class,
you still got a parents, you still got a lot
of things, you still got a lot of things to
attend to. So you deserve to be compensated for everything you're.
Speaker 1 (40:54):
Doing for me. It was that. It was that ten
dollars mill money I was getting. I was just happy
for that. That's what it was.
Speaker 3 (40:59):
It was tim bud. That's what you're gonna tell everybody
ten dollars man. But you know, these people go back
and look that stuff up.
Speaker 1 (41:07):
They can, they can go back.
Speaker 3 (41:09):
And wait, it's before social media, so they he had
on his risks, uh man. Outside of all of the
n I l like I said, my only hopes with
nil and obviously you're you've already obviously confessed how you
appreciate and they should get more. My only hopes and
(41:32):
this is to all these young people, handle it with care.
Make sure you learn how to handle your money, to
deal with your money, pay your taxes. That's one thing
I want, you know, these organizations or whoever that are
giving these young people all of this money, help them
learn how to save it and treat it with care.
And I just I just want all of these super
(41:53):
athletes you're getting paid this money for a reason, and
continue to stay hungry as they athlete that you are,
because it's so easy to me, like when you're talking
about coming to freshman sophomore getting bank seeing the I
mean even like you said, six figures, maybe not even
seven figures, it's easy to kind of just get complacent.
Speaker 1 (42:15):
Now we see it in the league.
Speaker 3 (42:17):
Once people get their deal, they're good, Like, I mean,
you got paid this money, and you've earned this money
because of the athlete you are and the product that
you've put on the floor for you know, obviously in
high school and you know, or whenever you get these
big deals throughout your college career. And I just hope
that they continue to stay on the grind and stay hungry,
(42:38):
stay hungry, still have you know, being you know, for
those who want to become professional athletes, still stay hungry
while getting this money, because that's what your job is
going to be once you become a professional. Some of
these guys may be taking a pay cut from college,
you know, to pro. I don't know that's what you did,
but you know, some of these guys, you know, maybe
(42:58):
taking a pay cut. But because when you get to
the league and you make this kind of money, you're
still expected to produce. You're still expected to be the
player that you are. So you know, I hope they
do that now to where they don't have to learn
how to do that later and it hurts them in
their game or lose, lose, lose a spot as a
(43:26):
college player, you know, being on top of the world. Like,
what was that feeling like? Like I said, I played
three years, made to the final four twice we lost.
But you what was that feeling like for you when
you heard your name as the best player in college basketball?
Speaker 4 (43:43):
So I'm gonna give you a little background, which was
like it might it might be weird, right, but I'm
gonna tell you what you my man.
Speaker 1 (43:50):
So that school, it got so crazy. The school hired
a bodyguard from me. Right, So.
Speaker 4 (43:57):
I'm walking to class. I got my guy Dann with me.
He whipped me everywhere, take me everywhere, do everything right,
just because it was like it was so crazy. I
couldn't even like step foot on campus. Small school, forty
four thousand students, right, everybody, people like, can you sign this?
Speaker 1 (44:16):
Can you do that? Can you? I can't even walk
to class. So I'm frustrated because.
Speaker 4 (44:22):
I just want to be a normal dude, right, I
just want to go I just want to go to
like whatever class and go to practice and who just who?
Speaker 1 (44:29):
Right? I just really want to hoop. That's all I
wanted to do.
Speaker 4 (44:31):
So then I started getting frustrated, Like I get fifteen
hundred like things sent to the school for me to
sign every Friday.
Speaker 1 (44:39):
I got aurgraph session every Friday. I'm having an art
graph session. Fifteen hundred thousand thousand items for the school
or just people sending them in. So I'm like I'm mad.
Speaker 4 (44:51):
And then like just USA Today had a thing or
I was on a back page Usaity day I said
a three point five million dollar man, So I'm on
the back page of that USA Today says three point
five million dollar man. So I'm like, this is crazy, right,
three point five million See that's my whn im numbers.
Come on, man, what are we talking about here? So
(45:13):
I like, for me, like I never looked at myself
as like I'm the National Player of the Year or
anything like that. Always just felt like I was just
a good college player and people was blowing out of proportion.
Until later in life, about ten years ago, I was like, damn,
that was pretty cool, you know what I mean, like
cause you I can't reflect on it.
Speaker 1 (45:32):
Who was runner up?
Speaker 3 (45:33):
Do you remember Okah for I think the year that
they won it that year.
Speaker 4 (45:40):
Wanted that year because you guys lost to in the
eight elite Oklahoma State. I missed the game winning shot,
missed the game winning shot.
Speaker 1 (45:50):
That's right? Is that?
Speaker 4 (45:51):
Tha John Lucas No Lucas ta The Graham Twins. They
had like five NBA dudes, Yeah, yeh yeah, we had
a cup. We had three or four, So I mean
pretty evil, you know what I'm saying. And then I
looked at that game probably again like ten years ago,
seven years ago. I didn't even realize we were up
by like twelve or thirteen at halftime, ended up losing.
(46:14):
So then I start getting mad. I'm like, man, we
could have really like spect these dudes. But what they
did was we'd had no answer for the gram twin
and he was just like stronger than everybody.
Speaker 1 (46:24):
And athletic boys. Many exactly.
Speaker 4 (46:28):
I was talking to everybody, right, you know what I mean.
Like we were like one of the first teams to
play four guards. We switching everything, and he just was
taking advantage.
Speaker 3 (46:36):
So and then you had Delonte West who was a
monster in college.
Speaker 1 (46:41):
Married people, people could say what they want.
Speaker 3 (46:44):
You know, obviously, you know what you know about Delante,
But if you didn't know, if you didn't see Dalante
in college, just go look, man.
Speaker 4 (46:51):
You're talking about a dude who made me better. He
pushed me to be better because he was so good.
I'm like, I can't let this dude be better than me,
so I gotta I gotta work hard.
Speaker 3 (47:00):
And he worked hard. He go at he like he
just loved to hoo. He's one of them dudes, like
he just loved to hoop cal That's all.
Speaker 1 (47:08):
He wanted to do.
Speaker 4 (47:09):
Was just one o'clock in the morning, he in the gym,
and I'm like, damn, like am I missing?
Speaker 3 (47:14):
So you know what I'm saying, Gosh, man shout out
to to d West.
Speaker 1 (47:18):
Man.
Speaker 3 (47:19):
You know I love you brother, I love you man.
But anyway, man, mir I'm gonna let you go. It's
it's obviously always a pleasure to take a trip down
memory lane.
Speaker 1 (47:28):
Obviously, you've accomplished so much.
Speaker 3 (47:31):
Your kids are doing great now your GM and I
hope you get what you want. You deserve it. Man,
I appreciate you joining the show. Obviously, the VC Show
is back swinging. I couldn't not do season two without
having you on. So I appreciate you taking the time
out man, chat with us and taking a trip down
(47:52):
memory lane.
Speaker 1 (47:53):
Brother, I appreciate it. Man. It's funny. I'm gonna go back.
Speaker 4 (47:55):
I remember when you summertime. You called me like, yeah, man,
I think I think about it. Be traded to Orlando.
I was work and I'm like what, man, I was
so happy.
Speaker 1 (48:05):
That's so funny that story.
Speaker 3 (48:08):
I forget all about that because I was doing the
basketball camp here in Orlando when it happened. And I
get the call from my brother first and he's like, Bro,
you see it. But I was doing the camp, so
I have my phone like right beside me, so bring
me my phone up. The dude brought from the phone.
I walked out the gym while the kid was going on.
I left them in the gym on the phone. I
(48:29):
was like, yeah, I'll be back it was.
Speaker 4 (48:31):
It was you know, it was.
Speaker 3 (48:32):
It was one of the coolest moments obviously three plan,
particularly coming to the team after y'all had just done.
Speaker 1 (48:39):
What you you guys have did you know? Being in
the finals, I was like, wait a minute, Who's I
traded for?
Speaker 3 (48:44):
And like the core guys were pretty much there, and
I was like, oh, man, coming back home and like
a team like good times, man, we had some good
times for a good time.
Speaker 1 (48:58):
Funny times man, like some of the player runs playing
rights with this guy. With that group, it was unbelievable. Man.
Speaker 4 (49:07):
Yeah, man, it's always good to reminisce man, especially when
you had like a real bond with people.
Speaker 1 (49:13):
And yeah, you know what I mean. I think that
that team and just that the core group of guys
in the organization.
Speaker 4 (49:19):
We can look back on things now, but like, look,
we did it the right way no matter what people think,
whether we want a championship or not.
Speaker 1 (49:25):
You know, it's only gonna be one team that win.
Speaker 4 (49:27):
So but we we put everything out there and like
you said, that year Boston they beat us a six,
but I look, like I said, man, it was fun.
Speaker 1 (49:37):
I had a ton of fun man, going through it,
And I was I was really.
Speaker 4 (49:41):
Thinking that we could do it again and get back
there again.
Speaker 1 (49:45):
Obviously you know things were left, you.
Speaker 4 (49:49):
Know, but I really thought that, you know, we could
we could go back at it because we had you know,
the core group back again, you know. Not a big
year two with with with you guys obviously you and
Dwight and Rashard was already together now to kind of
have familiarity with me there second year.
Speaker 1 (50:07):
I thought good things could happen. But I agree, like
you said, the way life works, it is what it is.
Speaker 4 (50:11):
But man, you know, I see I see obviously staying
on the road every now and then I see aj
I golf with him every now, and you know when
I used to run into him in Atlanta. So it's
always good memories, man, always good conversation. All right, Man,
go enjoy your son, Man, go do what you do.
Man's away was a pleasure.
Speaker 3 (50:29):
Man.
Speaker 4 (50:30):
Y'all, y'all show some love obviously for Jamie and Nelson. Man,
I appreciate you, Brot appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (50:35):
Bro Man. Shout out to Jamiir. Always a great conversation.
Speaker 3 (50:44):
I knew he would drop some gems and give him
some good stories and just great catching up to him.
But now our next segment coming up is the Upper
Room Dunk of the Week. I chose Zion for the
Dunk of the week because you know, we talked about
injuries with him overweight. Does he love it? Well, guess what,
he's back. He's feeling good. Check this clip out if
(51:06):
you have not seen it, Marshall, you see here. Marshall says, Oh,
that's Zion back there, easy tossed. Oh look at that extension,
two hands, feeling good. I mean, Zion looks spry, springy,
(51:27):
athletic as ever. Let me look at that. Just throw
it up there, I got it going away from the rimming.
That's let me tell you something, as a dunker, some
guards may feel like that's a bad pass. That usually
makes for the best dunk. So Zion Wilson, Welcome to
the Upper Rooms some of the week. Our next segment
(51:53):
is who did I Run into?
Speaker 1 (51:55):
This week?
Speaker 3 (51:56):
So I'm always going to talk about who I ran into,
or if I ran into, if I did run into
a celebrity, to someone interesting that I ran into. This week,
I ran into Q rich aka Quentin Richardson and John
wall I did NBA Hoopervision, and I did it with
q Rich and also brought on John Wall.
Speaker 1 (52:16):
Had a great conversation.
Speaker 4 (52:18):
It's always good to run into former players, guys who
still love the game around the game. Obviously, I still
think John Wall should still be in the game, but
it is what it is. So those are two guys
that I ran into, had a good time, good conversation.
But while we're talking about them, that's what I ran into.
But yo, you got to check out their podcast, q
rich Knuckleheads podcast.
Speaker 1 (52:38):
With Darius Miles. I got a chance to be on there,
had a great time. Go check that out.
Speaker 3 (52:42):
And also John Wall now has his podcast out called
Point Game.
Speaker 1 (52:47):
Go check that out. It's easy to say, oh, man,
another podcast.
Speaker 3 (52:50):
Yes it's another podcast, but it's a podcast coming from
a former All Star, a guy who's been in the
trenches and can break the game down perspective, talk about
his life his way, and I always think that's interesting
when you hear professional athletes talk about the sport that
they played coming from their mouths.
Speaker 1 (53:07):
So go check that out as well.
Speaker 3 (53:15):
And our last one, but definitely not least, I will
always do my shout out of the week. Since we
had Jamiir Nelson on, we played together with the Magic.
My shout out goes to you, Jamal Moseley coach. Jamal Mosey,
Orlando Magic head coach, currently in fifth. There are two
and a half games out of third. I think he
has them and maybe a game game and a half
(53:36):
out of fourth place. He's taking a young basketball team
and turned it into a very good basketball team that
has a chance to make some noise in the East.
Paolo Bancaro obviously on Rookie of the Year. He is
playing great basketball.
Speaker 4 (53:52):
They have some young studs, and yes, I do think
Jamal Moseley deserves to be the Coach of the Year.
Speaker 3 (53:58):
Yeah, I said it minute. Good luck to you, Jamal Moseley.
Good luck to you and your team in the playoffs.
That will be my shout out of the week. And
with that being said, that is the end of the
show this week. I appreciate everybody for joining in, you know,
continue to follow the journey, continue to log on and
listen to the VC Show. We're back full throttle. We
(54:22):
will see you next week. The VC Show signing off,
Let's go. It's the VC Show. It's the VC Show,
It's the VC Show, It's the Vows two.
Speaker 1 (54:37):
Let's let's go home. Let's go home, let's go home.
