Speaker 1 (00:00):
Heyby, what are you up to? Oh? Hey Elliott? In
honor of today's Hashtag History Supercut episode, I'm trying to
create the perfect hashtag that explains what makes the game
so fun and yet it's totally memorable. I like it.
What do you have so far? Well, not to brag,
but I think I nailed it on the first truck.

(00:23):
Here goes hashtag words from the greats if they had
social media back in the time they were alive and
maybe started using social media to talk about stuff that
was on their mind, and you know they would get
tho little blue check marks. What does it gull have
to do to get one of those? Around here anyway?
I mean, isn't being the announcer on the World's best
podcast enough for you people? M G seriously wrote me back,
love always be. What do you think amazing? I have

(00:45):
just one note? I think it could be longer I
knew it. And while you work on that, let's start
the show. Eric play the theme song. What do you
think you know about rates for this story? Before the
game is on? To get some energy and buckle up

(01:05):
your brain because it's time to play It's the worst podcast,
Because it's time to play. Bags who live from Tongue
to Land or so Falled so called Los Angeles. It's
Who Was the History Quish show that for today, we're
listening to a super cut of all the hashtag history
games from our shows so far. I'm your announcer, Beat

(01:29):
and trust me, I never have a plan A. And
now here's your host. The man whose topebags have topebags,
it's Elliot Galen, Thank you be. They give them to
you at the store and I can't bear to throw
them out because Topebag is just so sad. I gotta
give him a home. And yes, for today, we're revisiting
one of our favorite games from the Who Was Podcast.

(01:50):
It's hashtag history, hashtag history, hashtag history, hashtag history, hashtag history.
In this game, we read our contestants a hashtag they're
famous person would have used during their lifetime if there
was social media during that famous person's lifetime, and the
contestant will tell us what they were hash on about. Now,

(02:12):
let's get right into it with our episode about Amelia
Earhart and our contestants Amelia and Max take it away.
Be okay, Max, this first question is for you. Our
first hashtag is hashtag friendship goals. I think that is
when she was talked to Netta. I think that's what

(02:35):
her name was her friend when she first learned about flying.
It's a very good guest, but unfortunately it's not what
we're looking forward this one. The friendship was actually the
airplane Amelia took on that first flight across the Atlantic.
Making it to the other side was definitely hashtag friendship goals,
but nice try. Next question is for Amelia. Our next

(02:57):
hashtag is hashtag now ninety nine problems. Okay, so was
the name of the group that Amelia had formed, and
the name was flopping from like eighty three to seven
and they finally settled on ninety nine. That's right. The
ninety nine was the group of over two hundred female

(03:18):
pilots that Amelia Heart became the president of. It's this
organization helped female pilots find employment and community with other
female pilots. That was great. Next question is for Max.
This hashtag is hashtag all the single Ladies. I think
that's when she turned down so many marriages from many
different guys. That's right. Amelia turned down several marriage proposals

(03:40):
to focus on her career, which was not the thing
that women were expected to do at the time. She
later married her manager, George Putnam, but they both agreed
that Amelia would put her career first. Take that, George,
great answer. Max, next question is for Amilia Amelia. This
hashtag is hashtag Snooky. Um. I think it was like
the name of her play or something. Oh sorry, That

(04:02):
hashtag refers to Amelia's first flying teacher, Netta Snook, another
pioneering female aviator. It's who Max was talking about earlier.
By strange coincidence hashtag hashtag. Wow, that was great and
less confusing than I thought it would be with two
people named Amelia in the same room. Indeed, me too.

(04:24):
How's that revision on the hashtag going to be? I'm
still working on it. How about we listened to another
episode in the meantime. This is, after all a super cut.
Let's listen back to our episode on one of my
favorite authors, Jane Austen, with two of my favorite contestants,
Charlie and Kaylee Charlie Europe. First, Okay, all the money

(04:45):
in the world couldn't buy my love. Hashtag all the
single ladies was Jane referring to the fact that she
a made each of her protagonists perform a solo dance
at the climax of her story. Or B that she
never gotten married or see that she only ever drank
single servings of teeth. Be she never got married. That's right.

(05:08):
The answer is B. Jane Austen was proposed to but
chose to remain single because she believed in marrying for
love and not for money, and certainly not for likes
on Instagram. But that's largely because social media hadn't been
invented yet. If they had at the time, who knows,
maybe should have got married for likes on Instagram. Okay,
the next question is for Kylie. I guess learning isn't
the only thing that's contagious here hashtag going viral. Was

(05:31):
Jane talking about a coming down with typhoid fever when
she was in school? Be being very good at science?
Or see One of her most beloved characters is named
Lady Violet Rawl, whose nickname is viral. Uh. I think
that's right. The answer is A. Jane and her sister
of Cassandra, caught typhoid fever and had to leave the

(05:52):
school they were attending. Jane didn't like the schools. This
might not have been the worst thing. But disclaimer for
everyone listening at home, we do not recommend catching typhoid
as a way to get out of school. There are
easier ways to get out of school, like do really
good at it and then you graduate. You don't have
to go school anymore. Back to you, Charlie for the
next question. My latest book, Northanger Abbey, may look a
little familiar. Hashtag throwback Thursday, skeptical emoji winky face emoji

(06:18):
was Jane talking about a the novel being historical science
fiction that took place centuries before it was written. Be
the book is all about Jane's childhood or see. While
it was the first book she sold, it was one
of the last to be published. Um is the answer, C?
That's right. The answer is C. The man who bought

(06:39):
her first book refused to publish it, and it wasn't
until she made enough money from her other novels that
she could afford to buy it back. And the final
question is for you, Kylie. On my nineteenth birthday, Daddy
brought me something to help me hashtag rise and grind
hashtag blessed. Did Jane receive a paper and ink b

(07:00):
a small desk see both of those things or d neither.
He thought she was a terrible writer and should go
and become a nun. He she received paper and ink.
I think we can give you half credit for that.
The answer is, see both of those things. Jane's father
thought she was talented enough to be able to make

(07:20):
a living as a writer, a profession very few women
were able to perform at that time. But whether you're
a writer or a nun successfully comes down to maintaining
good habits. Get it, have habits, get it. Charlie does not.
It's okay if you don't. It's okay if you don't.
And that's the end of hashtag history. Hashtag delightful. That

(07:44):
really gives you a sense and sensibility of Jane Austen's life. Oh,
Jane Austen, panz okay too, you can play that game
while we take this short break. Why don't we have peanut,
butter and jelly while we play high and go see B?
Just because something has an end and it doesn't make
it a Jane Austen book title. I can't here you.

(08:07):
I'm hiding. Well, I pretend I can't see that B
is right behind the microphone. Let's take a break, Eric,
please play us some social media music. Please Welcome back
to the Who Was? Podcast? Today is a special hashtag

(08:29):
history super cut episode and I'm still working on the
perfect hashtag to go along with it. And now back
to your host, Elliot Kalin. Thank you. B I must
say that as a long scroll of paper you've got there,
are you using that to draft up the hashtag? I'm
a visual learner. It's part of my process. Makes sense.
Now back to our super cut with our episode all

(08:50):
about Red Cross founder Clara Barton. Our contestants Ava Natalie
did a great job despite all our attempts to apply fresher.
That's a first age joke. Let's hear it now. So
the first question is for Eva, I wanted to go viral,
but this is ridiculous hashtag smallpox big problems? Is this

(09:13):
hashtag about a A young Clara helping the children in
her town through a smallpox outbreak. B Clara being told
the Red Cross was a virus to democracy or see
Clara's band compromised a petite women called Smallpox reaching number
one with their hit Healing Time. The best answer to

(09:34):
me would probably be a that's right. The answer is
a young Clara, fresh off nursing for brother after a
bad fall, helped take care of the children of her
town during a smallpox outbreak. She was only about thirteen
at the time, but already showing signs of courage and ingenuity,
as she would display throughout her life. The next question
is for Natalie attention at school House One. Your arithmetic

(09:59):
is all long six hundred dollars divided by two fifty
dollars equals I quit. Hashtag square root of unfair? Hashtag
wage battle. Now was Clara talking about a her tuition
fees for the college she went to being too high,
be wage inequality at the schoolhouse she established, or see

(10:23):
her father telling her battle stories from his military days.
I think the answer is you got it right. The
answer is being. Clara created Schoolhouse One, a free school
in Boardentown, New Jersey. It was a huge success, but
the board hired a male principle and paid him over
twice what they offered Clara. She was so disheartened she quit,
but the incident didn't deter her from helping others. Okay,

(10:44):
the next question is for Ava take it away, b
It's time to sway President Hayes my way let's not
be neutral about helping people. Hashtag Swiss smiths hashtag say
yeah to Geneva. Was she talking about A asking President
Hayes to legalize chocolate in America. B trying to get

(11:06):
the US to convert to the metric system, or see
getting the US to join the first Geneva Convention. That's right.
The answer is seeing. It took Clara over a decade
and three presidents in office until the United States finally
joins the Geneva Convention, a set of humanitarian rules that
tells countries at war how to treat captured soldiers and
enemy civilians, and pledged to establish the American Red Cross

(11:29):
for disaster relief. Good answer. The next question is for Natalie,
who can put a price on helping those in need?
Money doesn't make a difference. Clara Barton makes a difference.
Hashtag budget without Borders hashtag fallen angel. Was Clara talking
about A her critics saying she mismanaged money at the
Red Cross, B inflation during the Russian Famine of or

(11:54):
see the expensive gifts and jewelry heads of state gave her.
I think the best answer is probably a you're right.
The answer is a Clara was criticized for running the
Red Cross with an iron rule. It was accused of
stealing funds. Many people encouraged her to give up her position,
but she didn't resign until after a Senate investigation found
her completely innocent. That wasn't the end of Clara's career,

(12:15):
but unfortunately it is the end of this game. Hashtag
hashtag Wow, that episode was great, A real work of art.
Sounds like you're providing the perfect segue for our next
episode about the artist Leonardo da Vinci. Our contestants, Mira
and Baltazar go head to head to see who can

(12:36):
artfully come away with the win. Let's hear it, go
for it, be all right, Nera, This first question is
for you. The first hashtag is hashtag brush with greatness
with Leonardo us this hashtag because A, as a part
of his first job, he had to make paint brushes
for an artist or be Leonardo loved to brush his

(12:59):
hair dately A. That's right. The answer is a. Leonardo
was an artist's apprentice, which is basically a student who
learns a trade and does the more basic chores that
the artist he studies under doesn't want to do. So
that they can focus on creating. There were no art
supply stores back then, so apprentices learned how to make
both paint brushes and paint and for the brushes they

(13:21):
used animal hair, such as those from hogs and squirrels.
So to get that hair, I guess Leonardo was also
a squirrel barber. What a renaissance man. Leo's next hashtag
is for you, Baldassar. The second hashtag is hashtag supper
time with Leonardo us. This hashtag because a Leonardo had
his own food network show called Diners, Drive Ins and

(13:43):
Da Vinci's or be Leonardo created a famous painting called
The Last Supper. B that's right. The answer is be.
Leonardo painted one of his most famous paintings, one of
the most famous paintings in history. The Last Supper is
a huge mural of Jesus and his last dinner with
his followers. Leonardo worked very hard on the painting, doing

(14:05):
many sketches of it, and once he started painting, he
paint from sunrise sunset without even stopping to eat or drink. Kids,
don't do that at home. Feel free to stop painting
to need to drink things you need to do it.
Don't be Leonardo sometimes Nero Europe again. The next hashtag
is hashtag sketchy with. Leonardo used his hashtag because a

(14:26):
he always kept a notebook and was sketching in it.
Or be one of his many inventions was Saturday Night Live,
the sketch Show. That's right, The answer is a Neonardo
kept many, many notebooks because he couldn't stop filling them
up with ideas and drawings. He filled his notebooks for
thirty years, to the point that there were about thirteen

(14:48):
thousand pages. That's right, thirteen thousand pages. Today, only six
thousand pages are known to exist, and they are considered priceless. Okay, Baltazar.
This final hashtag is yours. The final hashta is hashtag
bird brain with. Leonardo used this hashtag because A he
studied birds and their ability to fly. Or be he

(15:09):
had a parent who loved making fun of him. Oh,
that's right. The answer is a. Leonardo was sure that
one day people would fly, even designed a flying machine
that was kind of like a helicopter. He would buy
birds and cages and set them free in an attempt
to understand how they flew and how they flapped their wings,
how they landed, safely. Now, of course we know that

(15:29):
he was right. People would fly, but the airplane wouldn't
be invented until nineteen oh three, hundreds of years later.
But the Wright brothers, who are also you know who
was podcast episode? Maybe go check out that episode after
this one. Leonardo was a visionary and visionaries aren't always
appreciated in their time, don't I know it? And that's
hashtag history, hashtag hashtagla, that's Italian I and that was

(15:57):
our last episode. Bet are you ready with that hashtag? Oh?
Most definitely here goes hashtag words from the great today
social media back in the time they were alive and
maybe started using social media talk about stuff that was
on their mind, and you know they would get those
littlelue checkmarks. But just like, how how do you do
come one of those? Around here? Anyway? I mean, isn't
being the answer in the World's best podcast enough for you? People?
I guess if you need me to verify who I am,
I shoul sell you the last produsion of my Social

(16:18):
arts seven two MK nine and my mom's baiden names
Caroline And why are you atta just give me to
check marks? Blaze Elliot? How is that that was perfect.
