Speaker 3 (00:08):

Speaker 4 (00:13):

Speaker 5 (00:14):

Michael Lombardi. Today the one and only Matt Brana.

Speaker 6 (00:23):
Surprise surprise, super yeah, look at that to have you.
I know it's been a good first hours. Second hour
gonna be even better, no question about it.

Speaker 6 (00:36):
To the horses this.

Speaker 4 (00:37):
Hour, absolutely no question about it.

Speaker 5 (00:39):
Jeremy Plank going to join us in a little bit
get his thoughts on the Kentucky Derby, just twenty four
hours away from the biggest race in horse racing all
year long. It was fun talking to your guy Mike
sawmich who you co host the Handle with every weekend.
He came on the Lombardi Line yesterday given some of
his thoughts and everything. But it is it's crazy how
you have people like Mike, who are grinding out this

(01:01):
sport all year long, knowing everything that you have to
know about it, and then you just get the influx
of text messages saying, okay, so what's about the Kentucky Derby?

Speaker 4 (01:09):
What are your picks this Weekend's like nobody's talked to
me in a year, but now all of a sudden,
you want me to give you my picks.

Speaker 6 (01:16):
So everyone everyone pretends to be into soccer when the
World Cup comes around every four years, you know, like
everyone's like, oh yeah, I'm in the soccer. And it's
really it's just because in an event, everyone pretends to
be into horse racing.

Speaker 4 (01:27):
It's pride of country.

Speaker 6 (01:29):
Yeah, first first week of May every yearveryone pretends, and
then they will forget about horse racing again for another
three hundred and sixty three days and then they'll come
back around.

Speaker 5 (01:36):
But there are the people though, they get drawn in
by the Kentucky Derby and they're like, Okay, maybe.

Speaker 4 (01:39):
I'll check out the Belmont, maybe.

Speaker 6 (01:41):
I'll check out you know you love to take it.

Speaker 5 (01:43):
Yes, all the things like that, the big Triple Crown
events are awesome, but yes, this this weekend at Churchill
Downs is going to be pretty pretty special.

Speaker 4 (01:49):
I am sad though we got the.

Speaker 5 (01:51):
News that the horse that I really loved is a
long shot move got to will not be in the field,
unfortunately devastating. You know how much I love the name
value there and you do as well. But again, we'll
talk about that coming up in just about fifteen minutes
or so, and then in a half an hour. Nick
Alberga covers the Leafs closely has for years. Get his
thoughts on that series with the Bruins as a Game

(02:13):
seven is upon us tomorrow and all things NHL postseason.

Speaker 4 (02:17):
But let's start in the NBA here, where.

Speaker 5 (02:19):
The seventy six Ers trailed by twenty two in the
first half. They rally all the way back to take
a halftime lead. The Knicks end up still pulling this
off to close out the series in six one, eighteen
one to fifteen the final There, Josh Hart atoned for
the misfree throw in Game five, wide open at the
top of the key for the game winning triple, and
that's all she wrote there for the Philadelphia seventy six

(02:41):
Ers out in the first round once again.

Speaker 6 (02:43):
Yeah, we take a look the Knicks eleven to one,
now over at DraftKings to win it all. It's Celtics
won thirty nuggets, two forty five thunder seven and a
half nine to one on the Timberwolves, and then you
find the Knicks there at eleven and one of those
quick little hey you can make up bet to get
more money on what it is. So it's it's so

(03:03):
that you can also bet on the finals MVP. And
there's approximately point zero one percent chance that if the
Knicks actually win the title, that Jalen Brunson isn't the
NBA Finals MVP, Like there's no way they win without
him being who he has been through the first round
of the deal. So you actually get twelve to one
on him to win, as opposed to eleven to one
for the next to win the title. Again, I think
there is almost a zero percent chance that they are

(03:25):
they are able to shock the world and win the title,
and Jalen Brunson is not your Finals MVP. So again,
just a way to make the same bet in my opinion,
and get more money out of it than just betting
on the knixt But he has been herculean. We talked
about this in our number one in which when you
are being mentioned in the same breath as Michael Jordan.
For things that you have accomplished on a basketball court,

(03:46):
you're doing things right. And Jalen Brunson obviously goes out
and just has monster game after monster game after monster
game in this series and is able to propel the
Knicks into again a series that they are now big favorites.

Speaker 5 (03:56):
In forty one points twelve assists last night, the first
forty two game on the road to clinch a playoff
series in NBA history that capped a four game stretch
as you reference, thirty nine, forty seven, forty and forty one.
First player with thirty nine plus in four straight playoff
games since Jordan, So yeah, awesome for him. And it
was the former Villanova trio that really catapulted this next

(04:17):
team last night. Dante di Vincenzo added twenty three points
in forty eight minutes. Josh Hart, who I referenced off
the top sixteen points, fourteen boards, seven assists, He hits
the game winner and considering like his regular season three
point numbers over forty three percent from three in the
first round, for heart, good for the Knicks, and I
feel for seventy six ers fans everywhere, who even had

(04:39):
ownership paying for extra tickets this week so that you
guys would be loud in that building that it weren't
able to pull it off. And Joel Embiid it's just
every year the injuries pile up.

Speaker 4 (04:49):
He gutted through it. I credit him for that.

Speaker 5 (04:51):
But between that the conditioning, Tyree Smax, you had forty
six the other night. He doesn't show up in the
same way. I mean, he did in the fourth quarter,
but wasn't his best game. And obviously you have two
starting players that go off on the night. So a
tough thing there, and we'll see how they ultimately reset
going into next season.

Speaker 6 (05:10):
Yeah, minus two thirty five for the Knicks currently in
the series Pacers plus one ninety five in that series.
So getting a big plus money price on this. And
we see this Pacers team, we know what they're gonna do.
They're gonna run, they're gonna go fast, They're going to
try to that's how they're going to try to play you.
They do not they do not get away from what
they do. This is like this, this is what got
us here, and we're gonna win or lose with it.

(05:30):
And that's the strategy. Is going to be in all this.
I mean, I think again, I think the numbers are
about right. I think they are about appropriate. That said,
I'm not willing to lay the two thirty five on
the Knicks. If anything, I would probably take the Pacers
at two to one, but probably not a bet that's
gonna end up my account.

Speaker 5 (05:45):
The first game coming up on Monday, the Knicks are
laying six at the Garden total two sixteen and a half,
and I think we are going to see those those
totals be high, even though the Pacers playing with a
lot of a very high pace into the Knicks. One
of the slower if not this Lois teams remaining here
in the playoffs. It'll be interesting. But I think that
that's about about right about fair.

Speaker 6 (06:05):
We have gotten to the point now, and it's hard
to argue we've got to the point now. Jalen Brunson's
player prop is oh god.

Speaker 4 (06:12):
What is it?

Speaker 6 (06:12):
Thirty four and a half? Yeah, yeah, thirty four and
a half points And it's very hard to argue with it.
But man, there's no way I could take an over.
I mean, he is he likely to at least have
the opportunity. He's probably he's going to take twenty five
plus shots in the game, so I mean, the opportunity
is going to be there. I just can't on principle,
I cannot. I cannot bet on it has to get

(06:34):
to thirty five points in a playoff game. I just
can't do it.

Speaker 4 (06:37):
He's been a monster, though, he's been a thirty point monster.

Speaker 6 (06:40):
The closest the next closest guy on the pro is
Siakham at twenty and a half. That's why it's like
the next closest guy.

Speaker 4 (06:46):
Good for him.

Speaker 5 (06:48):
And again, the Pacers are in this spot because of
the way that they ended up ultimately just dominating the
Bucks last night one twenty to ninety eight in the
closeout game.

Speaker 4 (06:55):
Dame did end up playing.

Speaker 5 (06:57):
No Yahnis, though, which is unfortunate for a team that
had such high expectations for itself despite being thirty thirteen
or whatever the record was when they made that coaching change,
elected to move on from Adrian Griffin, to bring in
Doc Rivers and things just to not pan out for them.
Hate that Jannis wasn't available to at least see what
really could have been when these teams are at their best.

(07:18):
Although I am glad to see Patrick Beverley out of
the playoffs after whatever he did with the freakin' basketball
last night, and then the stuff he was pulling in
the lockero.

Speaker 4 (07:24):
Have you ever seen it?

Speaker 6 (07:25):
We have the floor and everything else.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, throw all.

Speaker 6 (07:28):
That in it.

Speaker 4 (07:28):
Have you ever seen anything like that?

Speaker 5 (07:30):
Though? In a locker room where you say no, you
can't talk to me in the postgame scrum because you're
not subscribed to my podcast. That really happened in an
NBA locker room last night. A thirty five year old
man saying no, and she's not even asking questions. She's
just got the microphone in there, taken the sound like
everyone does in every postgame locker room ever.

Speaker 6 (07:50):
You take super personal offense.

Speaker 4 (07:51):
To this to do this, Yeah, goes in locker room scrums.

Speaker 5 (07:55):
That is the most absurd thing I've ever seen. Are
you subscribed to my podcast?

Speaker 7 (07:58):
No?

Speaker 4 (07:58):
Get your microphone out here?

Speaker 6 (08:00):
What you're like? Guess what? Not? Only am I going
to go to subscribe?

Speaker 5 (08:03):
Now?

Speaker 6 (08:03):
I'm going to subscribe just to give you a one
star how about you? How about that?

Speaker 3 (08:06):
Right?

Speaker 6 (08:06):
Yeah, I'm gonna subscribe just so I can rate and
review you and tell everyone how terrible you are.

Speaker 5 (08:10):
But this after you you like, do what he's going
to get suspended for that, Like you not only throw
the basketball once at a fan, but then you throw
it even harder a second time because he didn't hit
who you intended to hit the first time.

Speaker 4 (08:21):
Like what are we doing?

Speaker 6 (08:22):
The thing about the bucks? I mean, and I understand Damian
Lillard was not playing one hundred percent, but I mean
it's like you're going to if you're going to go
and you're going to play thirty five minutes, Like I
think you gotta shoot the ball more than sixteen times.
I understand he had twenty eight points because he went
ten to ten from the line, but like, you just
got to beat the dude, right, I mean, you gotta
be Giannis isn't out there like we're talking about like
Brunston shooting the ball twenty five, twenty six, twenty seven

(08:43):
times a game right now? You know, And because he's
the dude, and he's like, I'm going to be the dude.
I'm going to propel my team in the playoffs. And
I look at this box score and you sit there
and you see that, you know, Bobby Portas shot the
ball more than Damian Lillard did. In this game, and
you're like, that seems to be a fundamental problem, you know,
whenever you're when you're Damian Lillard, if you've decided you're
going to play in the game, I get your compromise.
But if you're going to go, then go, you know,

(09:05):
shoot the ball twenty plus times in this thing. That
was a little bit disappointing.

Speaker 4 (09:08):
I asked a similar question, is that Graham?

Speaker 5 (09:10):
But with this Knicks pacer series upon us, I feel
like the Knicks are the team that would give the
Celtics the best run for their money if there were
to be somebody to have Boston on upset watch. That said,
seeing what the Celtics did to the Heat, and granted
like they're without Jimmy Butler, they're without Terry Rogier, it
just feels very much so like it's the Celtics to

(09:31):
lose the Eastern Conference.

Speaker 4 (09:32):
Also, as we speak, we got breaking.

Speaker 5 (09:34):
News it is in the NBA the Lakers ultimately have
elected to move on from their head coach Darvin Ham.
We expected that we would get an answer one way
or another soon. And uh, does this feel a little
scapegoaty to you?

Speaker 6 (09:49):
Yeah? I mean what was he? What else was he
going to do with that team. That team played about
as good as they were just capable of playing. They're
just not as They're just not good enough. You know,
I don't you could put anybody you know in that
chair and it's just they're just not good enough. I
think they got I think he got bought the maximum
out of that form of that Lakers team that you

(10:10):
were going to be able to get. I don't know
what more you can, but you have to do something.
You have to do something. Everyone wants something to.

Speaker 4 (10:18):
So what are you going to do?

Speaker 5 (10:19):
Like you have to you you make this move only
if you think you're going to get someone better. So
who's that going to be? Well, is it going to
be jj Redick? Like that's the name that we keep hearing.
He would be a first time head coach. But yeah,
they do a podcast together.

Speaker 6 (10:36):
Like yes, it's just I mean you're not I.

Speaker 5 (10:39):
Think that Tyleru would be awesome, but you're not going
to get him to The Clippers aren't just going to
give you Tyleru either. Yeah, it's you might retain him
just so the Lakers don't get.

Speaker 6 (10:50):
Hush Shams already said so coach Bud Kenny Atkinson, JJ
Reddick and if he were to become available.

Speaker 5 (10:58):
Tyler, which again the Clippers would be petty enough to say,
we're not going to move on to you from you,
just so that the Lakers won't have you across the street.

Speaker 6 (11:09):
Lebron, Lebron right now is he's just he's making his lists.
He's just making his list, and he will forward it
long and he'll say, here.

Speaker 5 (11:18):
I shouldn't sound surprised because we all knew this was
gonna happen, Like the fact that those conversations are already
available in insiders mouths and being thrown out there across
the board immediately following that Game five loss, Like you
know that it's going to happen, but it still just
bothers me. This is the player's fault.

Speaker 6 (11:36):
I think that they got the max out of that team.
They just didn't have the talent whatever.

Speaker 5 (11:41):
Like I said, the one hundred and fiftieth run for
the Roses is coming up tomorrow. The Kentucky Derby will
talk it over with Jeremy Plank when we return. Stay

Brown at the desk for Michael today, Stormy Bond and
Tony with you. And now let's turn our attention to
a little horse racing because the Kentucky Derby about twenty
four hours away, the one hundred and fiftieth run for
the Roses at Churchhill Downs. To help us break it
all down, we welcome in Jerby Plank on the Progressive
guest line, owner of horse Player Now the Racing industry

(13:27):
is lead fan education and player development website.

Speaker 4 (13:30):
You can follow them on x at horse Player Now.

Speaker 5 (13:33):
Welcome in, and how excited are you that we are
just around the corner from Kentucky Derby day?

Speaker 8 (13:38):
Wow, this is like Christmas if you're a horse player.
I mean, we're all excited about this. I've been playing
em betting the Kentucky Derby since i was a kid
going around the cafeteria and middle school getting money for
my teachers to see who we'd put tickets together on
in the Derby in the eighties. So for me professionally,
I'm in my about thirty second year of covering the
Kentucky Derby, going back to the early nineties, and it
doesn't it doesn't lack for excitement every year. And we've

(14:01):
got a superstar this year in Fierceness. So anytime you
have a big horse coming into the big race, it
just feels bigger.

Speaker 6 (14:08):
Jeremy, Before we get into your picks, everybody's talking about
the weather, and I want to get your opinion on this.
How worried should we be about it? Are we getting
too much? We're talking about this too much at this point,
and how does it change, basically our opinion as we
move forward, if the weather goes one way or the other.

Speaker 8 (14:25):
Well, it always seems to rain on Derby day, right,
I mean, it just seems to be the way that
it is. But the horses who are at the top
of this class have already run on sloppy tracks.

Speaker 7 (14:34):
I mean, you guys in.

Speaker 8 (14:35):
The desert may or may not know, but it's been
raining all over the east and the southeast all winter long.
So a lot of these horses, in their preparatory races,
we call them prep races, have run on sloppy tracks already.
So really, the ones who have asserted their form on
a sloppy track, we're going to hold that form when
they run against on it again. And there's not a
lot of horses that are inexperienced over it, so I

(14:55):
don't think it really changes the opinion too much what
we could have tomorrow those trying out racetrack, and that's
a lot different a sloppy track. They kind of press
it down with a squeegee behind the tractor and all
the water stays on top, so the track's kind of
really hard and the horses skip over the top of it.
In a drying out track, they use the rake and
the harrows, they open it up and it gets very

(15:16):
tiring and deep, like running in the deep sand in
the beach.

Speaker 7 (15:19):
Then stamina comes into place.

Speaker 8 (15:20):
So if you have a horse who's a little bit
questionable at the distance, or doesn't finish their races with
a lot of vigor, it could be a tiring out racetrack,
and then you really want to lean on stamina and
horses who may have that, you know, sustained running style,
so it could have an impact that way. I think
we're more likely looking at the weather forecast of what
I've seen. You know, handicappers aren't any better than forecasters

(15:41):
a lot of times, as you know, but from what
I've seen, it looks like we have a better chance
of having a drying out racetrack tomorrow then we do
a really sloppy wet racetrack.

Speaker 5 (15:49):
So Jeremy, with that in mind, and you mentioned the
prep races, what are you looking for from specific horses
and jockeys ahead of the Kentucky Derby.

Speaker 4 (15:57):
What's most important before you're placing these bets.

Speaker 8 (16:00):
Well, typically style wise, you either want to be right
up in the first three, down the back stretch, right
up into the mix of the race.

Speaker 7 (16:06):
We're coming from way back.

Speaker 8 (16:08):
The horses that were kind of like fourth, fifth through twelfth,
they rarely win the Kentucky Derby.

Speaker 7 (16:12):
The race doesn't fall into their lap.

Speaker 8 (16:14):
It's usually a horse who just dominates near the front,
or a horse who comes from well well off the pace.
Fierceness is the favorite. I expect him to be up
near the front. He should be first, second, or third
down the back stretch. He may not be right on
the lead, but he'll be within a length or two
of it if he's going to run his race. So
he's the horse from the front, the second favorite in
the race of Sierra Leone. He's going to come maybe

(16:34):
from twentieth he's in post two, he's did the inside
and the entire field is going to come down on
him early in the race. He has no early speed
at all, so his jockey, Tyler Gaffleon is going to
go far back and just try to circle the field
work his path through. So it's really an interesting race
where the two best punters in this race, one is early,
one is late. We might not see them in the

(16:55):
same frame at any point until the last twelve to
fifteen seconds of the race, and then it could get
a but they have definitely completely different running styles. I
look for fierceness though, with his jockey John Velaskaz, who's
won the Derby four times, to be really effective near
the front of the pack. Because Velaska's four wins in
the Derby, three of them have almost been essentially wired

(17:15):
a wire. When he's on the best horse in the race,
he's not afraid to just go take the race to
the others. And this horse is really interesting with fierceness,
because I know a lot of people aren't necessarily horse
racing fans. When we get to the Kentucky Derby, the
comparison with fierceness is he's your starting pitcher, He's Roger
Clemens and for the closer, he's Mariano Rovera. He's as
good at the beginning as he is at the end,

(17:36):
and that's very difficult for most racehorses. Most are either
really good at the beginning and then lose starch, or
they're slow at the beginning and sustain their run the
entire race. He's good early and late, so if he
runs his race, they're in big trouble.

Speaker 6 (17:48):
Jeremy, that's all fine and dandy, but we can't make
any money off of this guy.

Speaker 3 (17:52):
Right, So what do we do?

Speaker 6 (17:54):
What do we do?

Speaker 7 (17:55):
How?

Speaker 6 (17:55):
Five to two? This is not sexy. We need something
sexy in our account. So we got to get into
the exact markets, right.

Speaker 7 (18:01):
Correct, That's exactly right.

Speaker 8 (18:02):
And I always say that's why God created the exotic
wagers right for situations just like this, where we get
into you can't make money. Look if you bet this
horse at five to two in the Kentucky Derby to
turn in your card, right, I mean, we don't. It's
not a great bet at five to two. But the
Superfecta is the right bet in the Kentucky Derby for
a lot of reasons.

Speaker 7 (18:21):
But it's a one dollar minimum bet for each combination.

Speaker 8 (18:24):
And when you look at a twenty horse field in
the Kentucky Derby, it's unlike any field size we have
in America.

Speaker 7 (18:29):
Unlike your sports where.

Speaker 8 (18:31):
You're playing against the house a lot of times and
fixed odds, you're playing paramutual here on horse racing, which
means the.

Speaker 7 (18:36):
Losing tickets pay the winning tickets.

Speaker 8 (18:38):
That's the way the system works well in the Superfecta.
With twenty horses in a race, there's over one hundred
and fifteen thousand combinations.

Speaker 7 (18:45):
That can come in for the Superfective.

Speaker 8 (18:47):
You would think just the top four, it can't be
that many, but do the math. Twenty times, nineteen times,
eighteen times seventeen that's all the different ways it could
come in, more than one hundred and fifteen thousand different ways.
That's how we get our value. So even if fierceness wins.
We could easily have a superfector that pays into thousands,
if not tens of thousands of dollars, and that's the
way I'm going to try to attack. I'm going to
look at it as Look, we got a free space

(19:08):
on top right now. I got to figure out who's
going to run second, third, and fourth, and now we
can make some serious money.

Speaker 4 (19:14):
I love it.

Speaker 5 (19:15):
See I'm a trifecta box person, but we can get
more bang for our buck with that superfecta.

Speaker 4 (19:19):
So I am all in on tailing you from that standpoint.
Is there, though, any long shot that.

Speaker 5 (19:25):
Speaks to you, any horse you feel like could potentially
upset the apple Cart.

Speaker 8 (19:31):
Resilience He's a horse who last time won in New
York the Wood Memorial's trained by a Hall of Famer
Bill Mott, one of the greatest horsemen in the history
of the game. Resilience is a horse I've been high
on all year. He ran against Sierra Leone down in Louisiana.
He got beat about three lengths by that horse in February,
but he came back since then to win when they
went their separate paths and their final prep race. And

(19:52):
he looks like he's improving at the right time. He's
training tremendously. Bill Mott's got a Philly named just Fyi
in the Kentucky Oaks today, training just as well. They
were training so well together they had to separate the
two of them so they didn't outwork each other in
the mornings. I really think Resilience is going to run
a good race at a big price. And the other
one is a horse named Domestic Product. He's a stablemate

(20:12):
trained by Chad Brown, the same trainer as Sierra Leone.
But he's going to be about ten times the price
of Sierra Leone, and I've got a feeling he might
actually out finish his stable mate in here. He's been
put away since March, since he won a race down
in Tampa Bay. He is training tremendously up to this race.
I think Domestic Product is a horse at a price
who could pop in there as well. So if I
get Fierceness on top and I get one of those

(20:33):
two prices in the second slot, now it starts to
get interesting.

Speaker 7 (20:36):
How many horses can we afford to use? Third and four?

Speaker 6 (20:40):
Jeremy, Let's say we've got let's say we're coming in
someone's parachuting in not being big time horse better. They
got about a hundred bucks, is how are we breaking
down one hundred bucks?

Speaker 8 (20:50):
I still want to play the superfective, right, And look,
this is a once a year thing and not the
belittle amounts of money or anything like that. But if
you got one hundred bucks to bet, what do you
need three hundred fifty four?

Speaker 7 (21:00):
You know, Like I just never like understand that the grind.

Speaker 8 (21:04):
I get it if you're a sports better and if
you're playing you know, multiple games a day a week,
that sort of thing like that. But if you're coming
into horse racing for a one shot deal, let's make something,
you know, let's go after it and see if the
Kentucky Derby can't you know, make your career.

Speaker 7 (21:17):
In terms of commented horses.

Speaker 8 (21:19):
I'd still go after the super effecta again with with
the one horse on top, you can take four or
five in the second spot. Sierra Leone's probably gonna rally
and finish third or fourth in this race, right, he's
gonna come from twentieth, but I just don't think he's
going to get there. So if you could use you know,
fierceness in the first spot, Sierra the owned third or
fourth couple long shots in there in the mix. You've
got a chance to put a lot of combinations on

(21:41):
your ticket for one hundred dollars and really have a chance,
I'm serious to make you know, a couple thousand to
ten thousand to twenty five thousand dollars even with the
favorite winning this race on one hundred dollars.

Speaker 4 (21:50):
Bet Jeremy, you're awesome.

Speaker 5 (21:52):
Thank you so much for joining us today and enjoy
all the action out there at Churchill Downs.

Speaker 8 (21:56):
Good look, everybody, We'll try to get some cash to
this weekend.

Speaker 7 (22:00):
We can be sure that.

Speaker 5 (22:01):
Yes, one of the phrases we are known for here
at the network is the Brent.

Speaker 4 (22:05):
Cash and tickets is what it's all about.

Speaker 6 (22:08):
I'm gonna have so many super effected tickets I don't
have paid for. I'm gonna have so many superfact tickets.
I'm gonna be the best Superfecta loser on this network.

Speaker 4 (22:16):
What would your top super Effecta be?

Speaker 6 (22:19):
What we haven't we haven't gone through the power rankings
of the name yet.

Speaker 5 (22:22):
Ths you so is that we're saving that for later
end of the hour. Okay, perfect, And by the way,
for anybody who missed it. Both Encino and Mougatu, who
would have surely ranked number one in the name Power
rankings for the Knductory, unfortunately scratched for the event.

Speaker 4 (22:37):
Fierceness again our favorite. There.

Speaker 5 (22:39):
We're going to return talking NHL with Nick Alberga on
the other side of the break.

Speaker 1 (22:47):
This is the Lombardi Line with former NFL executive Michael Lombardi.

Speaker 2 (22:51):
Now Here is your host story bonton.

coming up on Sunday. Matt Brown in his seat. I'm
Stormy Bond, Tony Mooble friendly. That site mobile friendly obviously. Yeah,
you just pull it up on your phone and it
just works properly. Look at that.

Speaker 4 (23:32):
It's great news.

Speaker 6 (23:34):
Yeah, that's great.

Speaker 4 (23:35):
Welcome back into the show.

Speaker 5 (23:36):
We're live from downtown Las Vegas, Circle Resort in Casino,
and we're going to be going.

Speaker 4 (23:40):
Cross country and over the border as we welcome in.
Great friend of the show.

Speaker 5 (23:44):
Nick alberga host and director of Leaf's Morning Take on
Nation Network, co host of the NHL Fantasy on Ice podcast,
on the Progressive guest line, and when it comes to
the Leafs, just when I thought I was out, they
pulled me back in forcing the best towards in sports.
Game seven coming up tomorrow, Nick, how are we feeling
about the Leafs.

Speaker 9 (24:04):
I feel like I've hacked a pack of cigarettes and
I don't even smoke. Guys, It's it's very leafy. I
called it when it was three to one in this series.
I said, the Leafs are going to come back. They're
going to suck us back in. It's good for life,
it's good for business. Obviously, I host least warning takes,
so it's good on that respect. But it just feels
different this time around. I'm always careful to say that

(24:25):
because it is the Maple Leafs. It is a Game seven,
it is against Boston. But it feels like all the
pressure is on the Bruins, whereas like nobody expected the
Leafs to do anything this year of consequence of significance
in the Stanley Cup playoffs, And it really is going
to come down to, like which coach is going to
get fired? I think if the Leafs lose, it's Sheldon Keith.
If Boston loses and does the same thing did last year,

(24:46):
it's going to be Jim Montgomery.

Speaker 6 (24:47):
Here, guys, our first putt drop today about seven ten
Eastern Canucks and the Predators minus won twenty five for
the Predators at home, plus one o five Canucks on
the road, five and a half the totalways this Predator
team that was I don't know if you got this on.
Your Predators were getting a lot of bus heading into this.

Speaker 5 (25:06):
You're just saying this because you work with Mike Salmitch,
who is obsessed with.

Speaker 6 (25:08):
The there was on. Every single person we talked to
had a ton of love for the Predators. Forced me
to put a ticket into my account, which doesn't look
so good right now. Is this ticket dead for me?
What do you think happens tonight? I hope it's not.

Speaker 9 (25:21):
I have a ticket on the Predators too.

Speaker 4 (25:23):
Hey, there we go.

Speaker 9 (25:24):
They've been one of the hottest teams the NHL for
the last four months, the polarizing story with the sphere
and the polled concert with you two. I think Nashville
forces a game seven. I think for a variety of reasons.
Among them, I think they've dropped like four in a
row to Vancouver at Bridge Stone Arena. That's a tough
building to win on win in, I should say for
the opposition, I think they're going to come ready to

(25:45):
play in this game. And I think the biggest factor
in storyline is that Tri Demko not playing the number one,
and in fact, it's not going to be the number two.
Casey to Smith, They're going back to Arthur. She loves
the third string net miner who's twenty three years of eight.
And I think you compare them to UC Sorrows. I
know there's a bright future there, but I still would

(26:05):
go in the direction of Sorrows. I think Nashville is
going to bear down and I think they're going to
force the game seven. So give me the Preds money
line in that game.

Speaker 5 (26:13):
Also tonight the Vegas Golden Knights back at home, So
how this thing started. For anybody who hasn't been keeping
complete tabs on this series, the Golden Knights go up
two games to none on the road against the top
seed in the Western Conference, feeling pretty good, proceed to
now drop three straight games. Rip by the way to
anybody who bet the under in Game five, because there
were four goals scored in the first twelve and a

(26:33):
half minutes, and then it still stays under.

Speaker 4 (26:35):
But neither here nor there when.

Speaker 5 (26:37):
It comes to tonight, does this thing end or do
the Golden Knights extend it?

Speaker 9 (26:42):
So I'm always careful when I come on this show
and this network because last year I was famously quoted
as saying that Vegas would miss the Stanley Cup playoffs,
and then I doubled down in the playoffs and said
they had no chance against Edmonton. Then they go on
to win a Stanley Cup. Having said all that, let's
triple down.

Speaker 6 (26:57):
I like the All.

Speaker 9 (26:58):
Stars out this series storming in game six. It's been
such a weird and fascinating series where through the first
four games the home team had yet to win a game.
I just think, ultimately, ironically enough, considering Aiden Hill's run
last year, it's going to come down to goaltending. And
while the series is continuing on here, I think Jake
Ottinger for Dallas is getting better and there's a lot

(27:19):
of question Markston rightfully so when it comes to Vegas's screase,
even looking at Aiden Hill last game and I think
he was particularly good. Ditto for Logan Thompson, who's been
inconsistent once again this season. So I give the upper
handed Dallas. They've won three straight games as you reference
the fact that Vegas went up to nothing on this
in the series on the road, with everything in front
of them on home ice, and they couldn't get the

(27:40):
job done. So I say Dallas wins four in a
row and they win this series, and I'm changing my
show pick here.

Speaker 6 (27:45):
I like it. Look at that.

Speaker 4 (27:47):
Words hurt, Nick, Just keep that.

Speaker 6 (27:49):
I'm sorry, guys, that's another ticket of mine because you
know Hockey Matt comes out this time of year. Yeah,
if Hockey Matt comes out this time, you're having a
having a Dallas Stars ticket as well. So let's fast
forward to Sunday Hurricanes and Rangers. Rangers look good in
their series, getting it done. We don't know exactly when
this is going to go because there's multiple games that
could happen on Sunday, so it might be the only

(28:09):
who knows one which.

Speaker 4 (28:09):
Hold on quickly?

Speaker 5 (28:10):
Can I just say, after not long ago, you and
Mike Palm were on this program telling me that the
Capitals were going to keep the series close with the Rangers.

Speaker 4 (28:19):
How'd that I've got at least I got something right
in the first round. Okay, I did one thing right
this this postseason go on.

Speaker 9 (28:26):
Hey, credit to you for throwing that in my face.
You're right, I thought that serioes.

Speaker 4 (28:30):
You're going against the Golden Knights. I had to throw
something out there now.

Speaker 9 (28:33):
Yeah, no, no, that's fair. Yeah, thoroughly impressed with the
Rangers in the first round. I still think the President's
Trophy is a curse. I still like Carolina in this series.
We all thought it was going to get to round
two and it was inevitable it was going to be
Carolina and the New York Rangers. By the way, it
sounds like that series is going to start Sunday night,
but we'll see on official confirmation. I just, you know,

(28:53):
for a variety of reasons, and I think the biggest
one is that Freddie Anderson is playing playoff hockey for
the first time in his career, and I think he's
a deciding factor if Carolina is going to win the
Cup this year is if they get the goaltending, I
think they win. I think they're deep on the blue line.
I love their forward crop, I love the veterans they
brought in. Even Jake Denzil's had a very underwhelming postseason
thus far. I think it's going to be a close series,

(29:16):
but I think homemice advantage will be crucial in that series.

Speaker 5 (29:20):
The Canes in the set A minus one sixty favorite
Rangers plus one forty four game one pretty even lying
here Carolina minus one fifteen Rangers mince one O five,
five and a half the goal total there. And I
want to go back to your leafs here in Game
seven that's coming up tomorrow, just general thoughts on how
things might play out. I know that it feels like
one of those series where the Bruins, coming off of

(29:41):
last year as you reference and the way that they
fall apart against the Florida Panthers, guys could be squeezing
their stick a little bit tighter right now than normal,
Like what do you foresee happening tomorrow night?

Speaker 9 (29:52):
A couple things to think about from a betting lens.
I think in this game number one. David Pasternak was
called up by his head coach Jim Montgomery following Game six.
He's been really, really quiet. I think you look at
any time goal in that. I think aside from that,
I think there's too much value. It's weird to say this.
It is a game seven, it's Boston and Toronto. There's
too much value at plus money not to take a

(30:14):
look at the Toronto Mape beliefs in this game. Just
more so because of the process. Down three to one
in the series Game five and six, the way they
I thought, thoroughly out played the Boston Bruins, didn't give
them much offensively. I think the Bruins are in their
head everything you just talked about, the fact that last
year was three to one. Game five goes to ot
Florida wins it. They go on this impeccable run, and

(30:35):
weirdly enough, it's playing out the exact same way now
with Joseph Wall. I mean, you want to take a
deep stab at a cons my future. Joseph Wall plus
nine thousand is the value I got it at last night.

Speaker 6 (30:46):
This guy's the real deal.

Speaker 9 (30:47):
I mean, it's you always have to be careful to
compare people to Carry Price, the great Carry Price from
the Montreal Canadians. But he's so calm, cool and collected,
and I think he is in the Boston Bruins head
so definitely from Pasternak, I could see him scoring. I
think I expect a low scoring game. It is Game seven.
And the one thing I've been hammering, you know for
the last couple of postseasons regarding the leaves is the

(31:08):
under two and a half in terms of team total.
Thirteen straight games that may Pleice have scored three goals
or less in the Stanley Cup playoffs. It makes no
sense and I just have to keep hidding that. Right now, Nick,
we're gonna parachute in. People have not been watching hockey,
they have not been betting hockey. They're just gonna parachute in.

Speaker 6 (31:26):
The Hurricanes four to one, Panthers plus four seventy five
Oilers plus four seventy five Avalanche five fifty. The Stars
are seven to one, Rangers seven and a half, so
a lot of teams all jumbled up there. Of course,
the longer shots fifteen twenty two, twenty five to forty
five and then seventy for talking to the Predators. I'm going
to give you a free hundred American one hundred and
thirty seven Canadian for you to put down on your

(31:47):
favorite on your favorite bett. It doesn't less I have
to be your favorite team, but your favorite bet to
make for someone to root for the rest of this playoffs.
Where does that one hundred and thirty seven Canadian go?

Speaker 9 (31:57):
I'm sorry, Matt, I only play Roulette number thirteen.

Speaker 2 (32:01):
Give me.

Speaker 9 (32:02):
It's weird to say this again because the Canadian team
hasn't won since nineteen ninety three. I'll take the Edmonton Oilers.
I know maybe the value is not there, but I
think you look at their pathway first and foremost. If
it's going to be Vancouver, that your demko is nowhere
close to full health. I think they're a better team
than National Predators that they play them. Go look at
the numbers of Leon Drive, Settle, and Conor McDavid against

(32:23):
the Predators. They own that team pretty much. I mean,
they should have residents on Lower Broadway at this point
in time, so I think Edmonton the pathway is there.
I think when you look at McDavid, we're still waiting
for that elusive first Stanley Cup. Very similar to some
of the greats who have played this game, namely Sidney Crosby.
It's going to come at some point in time. So
I would put my money on the Edmonton Oilers. They're deep.

(32:45):
I think if they get the goaltending and they get
the blue line play, I think they could in fact
win the Stanley Cup this year.

Speaker 4 (32:50):
Nick, you're the man. Thanks so much for your time.
As always my pleasure.

Speaker 6 (32:53):
You guys, take care.

Speaker 5 (32:54):
And if there's one thing that you can be guaranteed
to get if you tune into Leaf's Morning Take following
game seven, whether it is happy yelling or angry yelling,
there will be entertaining yelling on the program, so make
sure you catch it.

Speaker 6 (33:07):
But polite yelling, A very polite.

Speaker 3 (33:10):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (33:11):
I don't know yelling. Polite yell. You can't we need
I can believe.

Speaker 5 (33:15):
I don't know how much of it when you because
it's on like TV four for you when you have
the NHL on, But I couldn't believe the fanfare. I
get that the Maple Leafs haven't had a ton of
success in recent.

Speaker 4 (33:26):
History in the playoffs lately, but like show out for
your team.

Speaker 5 (33:30):
What is this wine and cheese crab situation is Chad Rangers.

Speaker 1 (33:45):
This is the little Marty line with former NFL executive
Michael Lombardi.

Speaker 2 (33:49):
Now Here is your host story Bonton.

Speaker 3 (33:53):

of the Kentucky Derby coming up tomorrow from Churchhill Downs, which.

Speaker 4 (34:34):
By the way, inspired us.

Speaker 5 (34:36):
Because Matt and I are not horse racing experts.

Speaker 6 (34:40):
We know, we know, we know what we know. We
know what we don't know. We're not going to sit
here and try to pretend like we are horse racing game.

Speaker 5 (34:46):
We do know a few yes, and we do a
great job tailing those guys. Love Mike Sawmich very grateful
to have Jeremy Plank on the program earlier today. By
the way, make sure you go back download this show
and podcast form to get any of his picks and thoughts.
But we thought what we would do here is our
Kentucky Derby horse Name power rankings, because that's that's how

(35:07):
we do. We bet what our friends tell us and recommend,
and then we also throw in the best.

Speaker 6 (35:12):
Name bet yees, So I'm gonna get We're going three
two onths or our best one will be last. My
number three in the number three spot on the podium here.

Speaker 5 (35:20):
Track Phantom O Mine is on the podium as well.
Track Phantom was my number two, my number two for me.
Catalytic I like.

Speaker 4 (35:28):
That it's got It just sounds nice coming off the y.

Speaker 6 (35:31):
It does it just like you know in a horse
catalytic and if you look it up, it's relating to
or involving the action of being a catalyst. Is what
catalytic is. Okay, very good, number one at the top
of the podium. Epic ride.

Speaker 4 (35:44):
Okay, we went on an epic ride.

Speaker 5 (35:45):
That one I crossed out of my power rankings. I
considered it, but I.

Speaker 4 (35:49):
Removed it from the list.

Speaker 6 (35:50):
Okay, let's go yours.

Speaker 5 (35:51):
Number three, just Steal. I feel like it sounds tough.

Speaker 6 (35:56):
Yeah it's true, you know, yeah.

Speaker 4 (35:58):
Like something about it, like a winner twenty twenty one way.

Speaker 6 (36:02):
I was gonna say, he will be in your Superfecta pool.

Speaker 5 (36:05):
I had to find some replacement long shots because Mugatu,
who far and away would have been the number one
power ranked name in the Kentucky Derby one hundred and
fiftieth run for the Roses, unfortunately scratched. He and you
know both scratched in this one, so they were out
of the running. Track Phantom was two and then just
a Touch, So I go from.

Speaker 4 (36:23):
Just Steal to just a touch. I don't know, I
just I think that there the names were a little
bit more lackluster than I was hoping for.

Speaker 5 (36:31):
We've had some really cool names in the past, and uh,
you know, this list wasn't really doing doing it for
me like they usually said.

Speaker 6 (36:37):
Here, you and I will both have track Phantom in
our pool. So let's let's go track Phantom. You know
we will at least we have common rooting interest.

Speaker 5 (36:44):
Throw it in there and fierceness in a superfecta love
it there.

Speaker 7 (36:49):
It is.

Speaker 6 (36:49):
That's how we win all the money.

Speaker 4 (36:50):
All right?

Speaker 6 (36:51):
Something else to be all the money.

Speaker 4 (36:52):
All the money, Dalla dollar bill.

Speaker 6 (36:54):
Y'all, lights are going to be off in this place
because to win all their money.

Speaker 5 (36:57):
Obviously the lights do go out in here sometimes not
because of that, we are going to close out the
show today, do it having a little bit of fun
combining the Lombardi line with your show. The handle something
that you and Mike Sammich do every weekend called the
Emoji game.

Speaker 4 (37:11):
So you want to tell people what we're gonna do here.

Speaker 6 (37:12):
Yeah, So basically, we decided to take three different team
futures and then three different Heisman odds on guys and
attach an emoji to it to see, you know, describe
how we feel about these bets and the numbers attached
through an emoji. Okay, so speaking to the younger generation,

(37:33):
to the.

Speaker 4 (37:33):
Young'ins out here.

Speaker 5 (37:35):
For Georgia to win the College Football Playoff National Championship,
there plus three twenty what.

Speaker 4 (37:40):
Emoji would you use to describe that wager?

Speaker 6 (37:44):
All right? So you would you would know better than me.
Is there an official name for this one that I have?

Speaker 4 (37:49):
I don't. I don't think there's a name. I don't
know the names for these emotions.

Speaker 6 (37:52):
The one worthy guy is like covering up, but he's
peeking through one eye, and so I we'll just call
it the peak peak peaking, peak peaking. And the reason
is because I look at it and it's like, oh man,
I don't want to see such short odds. But at
the same time, I have to look at them because
I think that this Georgia team is so ridiculously loaded
and stacked to where I'm counting. Don't show me that,
but then also kind of show me that because three

(38:14):
I know, I know we're going to a different format.
I know all that differ. I get all of it.
I get all of it. They just have five star
after five star after five stars.

Speaker 4 (38:22):
Oh oh, you lost some talent who cares.

Speaker 5 (38:25):
Number one recruited class coming right in. That's why Kirby
Smart got paid the big bucks. You see that thirteen
million dollars deal coming through. Good on, I went ahead
and did the like yawn, cover the mouth good, but
also to your point, entirely possible, rightful favorite as a program.
They are forty two and two with two national championships

(38:48):
the last three years.

Speaker 6 (38:50):
Entirely reasonable to you remember, no Nick Saban in Alabama anymore.
So you've got like you saw a bunch of kids
leave the Alabama program, and so their biggest competitor for
the last decade now is going to be a little
bit weakened. There's just so much going in favor of
the Georgia team.

Speaker 5 (39:07):
So then how would you describe via emoji the eighteen
to one odds on Michigan to repeat a lot of
changes in inan arbor.

Speaker 6 (39:16):
I went with the broken heart emoji. And that's for
the Michigan fans out there. I'm glad you got your time.
I'm glad you have to feel it. I know what
it has I know what it feels like. I've had
a couple as an LSU fan, but I have a
broken heart here because I think it's not going to
be for a while now. Same deal we're talking about
in Alabama. You lose your coach, you lose your quarterback,
and with all that, you lose some recruits as well,

(39:37):
and so I think it's going to be a little
bit of a road back here. So I did the
broken heart there.

Speaker 5 (39:42):
I did the monkeys covering the eyes because I don't
see it. It's just, you know, it's it's not there.
You lose a school record thirteen players to the draft,
You lose your head coach, you lose your quarterback, you
lose your star running back in Blake Korum, your wide receiver,
your entire offensive line, like need I go ont you know,
all kinds of stuff.

Speaker 4 (40:02):
Yeah, I do like that.

Speaker 5 (40:03):
You bring in Wink Martindale, big Shirre on more fan.
I hope that they're able to, you know, make something
out of this. But at eighteen to one, you're not
going to catch me place in that bed. But you
mentioned LSU, Yeah, beloved Tigers fourteen to one?

Speaker 4 (40:16):
What e mode you would you use for that?

Speaker 7 (40:17):
Bet?

Speaker 6 (40:17):
I mean I did for me. I did the little
hmm face, you know, the guy with the on his
the finger on his chin, the hand and finger on
his chin.

Speaker 4 (40:26):
I love that.

Speaker 6 (40:27):
It's an interesting number. I think there's a case to
be made, and there's a lot of teams that could
fit in this argument outside of George Georgia is head
and shoulders the most talented team in the country up
and down. But I think in the small handful of teams,
if you're looking at pure talent and what this, what
they are going to field, LSU is probably in that discussion,
is probably in the short is it's on the short

(40:49):
list anyway, and so if you look at it, it's
at least interesting to me because we have seen teams
run pure and you know, listen, they get ahead to
head with George at some point and if everything goes right,
and I think it's at least interesting. I think they're
in the conversation for one of the most talented teams
outside of Georgia.

Speaker 5 (41:08):
I'm glad that you're optimistic. My emoji is the holding
back a little laugh there. Again, I find it hard
to get on board with this considering what you lost
in the Heisman Trophy winning quarterback and two first round
wide receivers who are gone. You did lead the nation

(41:28):
and offense last year, but your defense was big bad.
So this all comes down to how much do you
trust Garrett Nesmeyer and how much do you believe that
the defense is going to be upgraded in a big way?
Because looking at your schedule right now, the three losses
that you had last season, Florida State scored forty five,
Ole Miss fifty five, Alabama forty two.

Speaker 4 (41:47):
That's not what you're looking for.

Speaker 6 (41:48):
On the defense side, er body gone. They were like,
you guys are terrible, Get.

Speaker 3 (41:52):
On out of here.

Speaker 6 (41:53):
We're getting someone in here.

Speaker 5 (41:54):
But I will say though Brian Kelly's twenty wins and
two seasons are more than Nick Saban won his first
two years at Michigan and say LSU or Alabama, So
like on the right track, absolutely, I just think you're
three asking for a national championship.

Speaker 6 (42:05):
Is a lot, got a lot of talent, but like
you said, might be a little bit too early.

Speaker 5 (42:08):
Going back to Georgia, Carson Beck favorite to win the
Heisman nine to one.

Speaker 6 (42:12):
I did the rocket I mean, this guy's on a
rocket ship. I mean this is to me, this is
a good bet, a likely bet. He's at least, at
the very least going to be in the conversation no
matter why. I mean, he's going to be in the
conversation all year long. Nine to one, probably going to
get shorter if I cannot imagine this thing getting longer.
So I have a rocket ship.

Speaker 5 (42:29):
I mean even Stetson Bennett worked himself into being a
finalist for the Heisman. Carson Beck is significantly more talented.
And if Shdor Sanders is a favorite to be the
number one overall pick next year, whatever, like Carson Beck
probably should be. We're looking at quarterbacks. So I'm I'm
with you there.

Speaker 4 (42:43):
I did the heart emoji, the little not not the
heart emogi, but the making the heart with your hand.

Speaker 6 (42:47):
Yeah, a little hard hand.

Speaker 4 (42:48):
Yeah, I did that one. I like that.

Speaker 5 (42:49):
I'm all here. He's really good. Solid first season at Georgia.
He's just going to get better this year.

Speaker 6 (42:55):
If they're one a reason to get the video subscription
to the VS and Pro.

Speaker 4 (42:57):
This is the time.

Speaker 6 (42:58):
It's because we're making we're doing the emoji. He's like,
we're acting them out.

Speaker 4 (43:01):
Speaking of Shudor Sanders, he's thirty five to one. Yeah
in the Heisman.

Speaker 6 (43:04):
So os for me, there's all kinds of craziness going
on without that, like, no, no way, no how sos
on that? Yeah? What about you?

Speaker 5 (43:13):
I did the girl going like this, no thanks, and
the bio has it exactly.

Speaker 6 (43:18):
We're on the same page with that one. Then, for sure,
no chance no change. They're not gonna meet a good
so just don't waste your money.

Speaker 5 (43:24):
They won four games last year. Yeah, we call that
a Saint Jude's play here on the Lombardi line. Last
one closed out any non quarterback to win the Heisman.
You got Travis Hunter also Colorado, sixty to one. Florida's
Trevor Etn seventy to one, Ohio States quin Shawn Judkins
seventy to one.

Speaker 6 (43:39):
Trash can. That's where that bed is going to go.
If you put in anything other than the quarter it's
going to be a quarterback.

Speaker 4 (43:44):
If the question was cash it or trash it, Matt
says trash it.

Speaker 5 (43:46):
Yes, I did the the mouth zipper emoji for you
shut your mouth.

Speaker 4 (43:52):
When you're talking to me.

Speaker 5 (43:53):
No, it just it's I mean, history is not on
your side. It's a quarterback award. There have been three
non quarterbacks that have won the Words two thousand. All
three of them played for Alabama. All three of them
won national titles.

Speaker 4 (44:04):
I don't see.

Speaker 6 (44:06):
Here's the deal. Whatever money you were gonna do, just
go in and buy a vcon Pro subscription instead. How
about that? There you go, so.

Speaker 4 (44:13):
Much better value. Thanks for hanging out.
