Freddy said something interesting just before the break. Welcome back
Hexes and Bros. And Monday through Friday six until nine
on the Michigan Sports Network and also streaming live on Facebook,
on Twitter, and on YouTube. He said, you know they
got you know, they beat the Rams, they beat the Buccaneers,
they go into San Francisco, they do what they always do.
(01:36):
Be careful. There there's the emotion, there's your frustration. I
get the sense that Freddy's not speaking just for himself,
that there's a lot of fans who feel like this
team feels like it has arrived. Yeh, because we're so
used to a lot of bad football in this town
that suddenly we see three consecutive two and a half
consecutive years, if you want to throw this year into it.
(01:56):
So far it's been good. It has been great, but
two really strong, long seasons that suddenly now we've turned
the corner, we have arrived, and everything's going to be
fine and dandy, because you know, this is just the
way it is. We're built to last. And I don't
think this franchise feels that way. Sometimes we get a
(02:19):
sense of that, but I don't think the franchise feels
that way. And I would say I don't think Brad Holmes,
Chris Pielman, Dan Campbell are that way. Don't confuse Applebee
commercials with a guy who isn't engaged with everything that
his team is doing on a regular basis. And let's
not confuse Brad Holmes is inability to be to get
(02:42):
a deal done on trade deadline as a guy who
doesn't care. I'm not gonna go quite that far. With
that said, I will agree that with Freddy that from
a fan base standpoint, from a media standpoint, we have
felt like because we've never seen this before in our lifetime,
and we haven't. I don't care who your general manager
(03:03):
was when you grew up watching the Lions. I don't
care if it's Russ Thomas or Chuck Schmidt or Matt
Millan or Martin Mayhew or Bob Quinn and now Brad Holmes.
Just because Brad Holmes is the best of the bunch
doesn't mean that he's the best we've ever seen in football. Okay,
because everybody else before him stunk, They sucked, they were
(03:27):
terrible at what they did. There's a reason they didn't
get another job. Russ Thomas didn't go anywhere else, Chuck
Schmidt didn't go anywhere else. Matt Millan didn't go anywhere
else except for the broadcast booth. Martin Mayhew, I guess
he did. Bob Quinn is not a general manager anywhere.
There's a reason for that. We always talk about what
(03:47):
Lions coach was fired and then got another job outside
of Dick Jaron and he was an interim coach here
and then became head coach of the Chicago Bears. Nobody
else has become a head coach. There's a reason for that.
They're not good. They became coordinators Schwartz, Marinelli, Patricia, but
(04:08):
they never became another head coach. Well, general managers same thing.
Whi's the best we've ever seen. It doesn't mean it's
good enough yet. That's important to remember when you're getting
compared to failure and ineptitude. It doesn't make you great.
Speaker 7 (04:30):
When the bar is low, It doesn't take much to
it just makes it just.
Speaker 5 (04:36):
Makes you better than what you what you took place of.
Speaker 9 (04:39):
Correct, Okay, that's all.
Speaker 5 (04:41):
It just makes it you're better than what you've replaced.
That's all that measures. Now, have we gone overboard as
a media and a fan base and a society of
Lions football? I don't think so.
Speaker 9 (04:56):
Maybe a little, maybe a little, I could.
Speaker 5 (04:59):
Say, maybe I mean, this wasn't even a thought two
weeks ago, was it.
Speaker 9 (05:04):
That's true?
Speaker 5 (05:05):
Yes, well maybe maybe three weeks ago after you beat
Tampa with a legion of whom were you even considering this?
Hell no, you weren't. And this is how quickly things
change in sports. And it's one of the many things
I love about sports. It can be frustrated, but I
love it. You can be super high one game and
(05:27):
then super low the next, ask Florida stayed at the
beginning of the season. Did anyone think they would start thinking, hmm,
we're going to fire our head coach after they beat
Alabama in Week one? Absolutely?
Speaker 3 (05:39):
Not.
Speaker 5 (05:41):
So when Jonathan Smith walked off that private plane wearing
green and white and doing a press conference, and how
excited he was, do you think he thought in a
year and a half people would be calling for his job.
It's how quickly things change in sports. So it can
change in a negative, and it sure is how can
change in a positive, asked the Tigers from two years ago.
(06:05):
So maybe we've gone a little bit overboard when it
comes to Brad Holmes, and we have focused primarily on
the success stories that we've given you just because we
didn't see a'man ross Saint Brown being a star in
the fourth round means he did just because we never
would have drafted Jack Campbell, Sam Laporta or Jamir Gibbs
(06:27):
because running backs around as important as they used to.
But he did see that brilliant move and it was
successful and has been very successful that suddenly we've got
to believe everything he does turns to gold. Absolutely not,
no way, it can't happen that way. And now you're
going to Washington. You may not have Decker, you definitely
(06:48):
don't have Mahogany, you may not have Sewel. I think
he's gonna play, but I mean that's the possibility. Suddenly
that game becomes a winnable game to a scary game,
doesn't it.
Speaker 7 (07:02):
Well, Yeah, all anyone's talking about is that Jadon Daniels
is hurt. But you what about the injuries you've got?
Speaker 5 (07:07):
Yeah, exactly right. And then suddenly you start to see
a trend or a pattern that could easily take shape
where you're pretty nervous. We just lost to Minnesota, a
team we thought would be better with a quarterback who
had two games prior under his belt and really wasn't
(07:29):
all that special. On Sunday afternoon. Was he No, he wasn't.
He made three or four really good throws, and I'll
give him credit for that, but his stat line was
nothing special. He made the plays when he needed to.
Suddenly you got Washington, then you got to go to Philadelphia, who,
at the beginning of the season not many people thought
(07:51):
looked like the defending Super Bowl champs. But guess what,
they've made some adjustments. They've made some additions. And rather
than crying in their soup because Zadarius Smith, who they
picked up and you freaked out, was decided to retire,
what did they do? They coax Brandon Graham out of
retirement and then they go trade for Jalen Phillips. Remember
(08:15):
Jalen Phillips has been injured the last two years. Let
me go back to the phone lines, the Myer hotline
eight sixty six eight three eight forty eight forty three.
Don't tell me you're tired of them drafting injured players,
Then go tell me I want a guy who played
four games in two games the previous two years.
Speaker 7 (08:31):
Go ahead, we got Jeff listening on our flagship ninety
six point one has lions thoughts.
Speaker 5 (08:36):
Hi, Jeff How are you today? Good?
Speaker 10 (08:39):
How are you doing, Chip good?
Speaker 5 (08:41):
What's on your mind?
Speaker 10 (08:42):
You sound a bit emotional this morning.
Speaker 9 (08:44):
I can be a.
Speaker 5 (08:45):
Little emotional, Yes, I can be. Yes, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 10 (08:50):
I've been a fan since I was five years old.
I've been emotionally involved in this team, in this franchise.
But when is when is enough? When is it going
to be good enough? I'm enjoying just having a winning
team right now, after all the losing and the horrible
(09:10):
coaches and like you said, the general managers, the ownership,
I'm enjoying a winning team. We went fifteen and two
last year, and I've never seen people cry and just
act like the end of my son. I have a
seventeen year old. He was just beside himself. I'm like,
you have no idea what it is about suffering. I'm
(09:30):
just enjoying the winning. Of course, the goal is the
super Bowl. But I absolutely one hundred percent believe in
this GM. I don't know of another team, and I
don't really care about the other teams, but we've got
so many starters that we drafted, and there is no
doubt in my mind. The price for offensive lineman yesterday
(09:51):
was too steep when he doesn't have a third round
pick next year. Keep those picks. I want to keep winning.
I don't want to two or three years and then
we're back losing again. I want to why he believes.
Speaker 5 (10:06):
In that, Jeff, why do you think they would suddenly
go back to losing if they traded away a fourth
or a fifth round draft pick for an edge rusher.
Speaker 10 (10:14):
I don't. I don't think. I don't think it would
have been a fourth fifth. I don't think I think
they wanted they wanted more than that yesterday because we
don't have a third next year, and I don't think
he wants to give away those first or second. Yeah,
and you were more injured last year. I think we
were more injured last year on defense and went fifteen
(10:35):
and two. And I think part most of the reason
I think we lost last year is that we had
two coordinators with one foot out the door. I'm more
concerned about why we came out of our bye week
and got rolled by a team with way less talent
than we had. That's my concern is about that coach. So, Yeah,
but I don't don't.
Speaker 5 (10:56):
I don't think those I don't think those coordinators had
foots out the door. At all, because I don't think
they knew that they were getting those jobs specifically right away.
Number one, they had interviewed the year before too, and
they won two Super Bowls. So just so you know,
and thanks for the phone call, Jeff, I'm with your
(11:16):
seventeen year old son, because as I say, as I
say all the time, expectations change. If you were happy
after the loss at home to Washington, a wild card
with a rookie quarterback, when you had home field advantage
and you had one of the best offenses, the best
offense your franchise has ever had, then we just differ
(11:37):
on our expectations. I'll pick it up after this. It's
a really good call and I appreciate it. We'll pick
it up after this. More on the other side.
Speaker 10 (11:44):
We're.

S eighteen after the hour, Welcome back. Trent and I
(19:31):
were just talking during the break. I appreciate Jeff very much.
I'd like to hear from a seventeen year old son,
quite honestly, but so Jeff said. Jeff said prior to
the break, and I hope he's still listening. He said, Look,
I don't think it was I think it was a
first or second round pick. Let me just remember that.
Remember this is what I said. They need depth. I'm
(19:54):
not looking for someone to come in and be a
savior here. Jaseer Taylor. Jets traded him to the Chargers
for a seventh round draft pick. It's a cornerback. Trevor Penning,
who's a tackle, went from the Saints to the Chargers
because the Charges have lost their two starting tackles, including
(20:17):
Joe Alt last week, for a seventh round draft pick.
Joe Tyron Showinka went from Cleveland to Chicago for a
seventh round pick. I'm not asking for Sauce Gardner and
giving up two firsts. I'm just telling you there are
(20:38):
teams that have made moves. Draymond Jones went from the
Titans to the Ravens for a fifth round pick. It
could be a fourth round pick, so I know they
didn't have a third round pick, so perhaps the Jalen
Phillips wasn't even in consideration. Remember Baltimore also traded Jayir
(20:58):
Alexander to Fillhiladelphia for a sixth round draft pick. That
dude can play now, Jeff Sittner's saying, I don't think
it would have cost that. How do you know? Because
you remember one name and one trade. You remember the
big name, Sauce Gardner going from Philly to or going
(21:21):
from the Jets to the Colts for two firsts. That's
the one you remember. You forget all the other ones.
You forget that. Michael Carter the second went from the
Jets to the Eagles on October thirtieth, just before Halloween,
and in exchange they got a sixth and seventh round
(21:44):
draft pick. Don't tell me you couldn't have done something
for a lower round draft pick, because you could. I
just gave you six or seven examples of exactly what happened.
The problem is, this is no knock on Jeff. He's
been a longtime Lions fan. He and I have suffered together,
(22:08):
and I have suffered a lot because I've done pre
and post games, and I've done preseason games on TV,
and I've traveled with that team, and it's been frustrating
because you really want good people to win, right. You
want guys like Rob Simms to have success. You want
Robert Porchet to have more than just individual success. You
want guys like Chris Pielman to win. When you see
(22:30):
how much they've sacrificed. I get all that, and I
think Jeff and his friends have all sacrificed too. It's
pretty obvious Jeff at some point, just because you've gone
through decades of misery and you and I.
Speaker 1 (22:49):
Looking for a great way to reward and thank your
hard working team this Christmas. Choose a gift that gives

Speaker 8 (23:17):
My daughter Ellie had this ankle pain and we went
to see VGI Orthopedics. They actually picked up on her
fatigue issues, so they brought in a rheumatologists and just
a few small tests, they realized that Ellie was sediac.
So what was brilliant was that VGI had a pediatric
dietitian ready to help manage her diet.
Speaker 1 (23:40):
Really felt shameless, Vgi, because your health means everything.
Speaker 5 (23:47):
I have lived that together so much, so we're sometimes
you and I have had to have an alternate team.
The Lions are my team, but we know they're not
going to be there, so let's pick somebody else who
we think will have a chance to win a Super Bowl.
So at some point, Jeff, all those decades of misery,
you finally get a really good team. Are you trying
(24:09):
to convince me that for as long as you suffered,
you're willing to accept average just because you suffered that long,
you can't want more.
Speaker 7 (24:22):
I don't know if it's accepting average, but it's well
keeping it is, That's what it kind of sounded like.
Speaker 9 (24:28):
But I think it's keeping everything.
Speaker 7 (24:29):
In perspective like petive for me, the perspective as you
can be satisfied is not the word chef, but you
can enjoy the ride a little bit because the team
is good finally for the first time, you know.
Speaker 5 (24:42):
So it's not for the first time. They were good
two years ago. They made it to the NFC championship game.
Speaker 9 (24:47):
I'm talking about this, Yes, yeah, I'm talking about this.
Speaker 5 (24:50):
They were really good last year. The reason you can
call it a little negativity, I suppose, if you want
to associate that with me cynicism, is because there are
no guarantees.
Speaker 9 (25:04):
Correct.
Speaker 5 (25:05):
You and I thought it was guaranteed last year and
we didn't learn. Don't tell me you didn't. Fifteen and two,
home field, a bye to get healthy, a wild card
team coming in well and they just let buy a
cookie quarterback. You got two great coordinators, you got a
great head coach, you got fan base.
Speaker 9 (25:23):
You were there.
Speaker 5 (25:24):
Fan base is going crazy, right all.
Speaker 7 (25:26):
They kept winning in spite of all the injuries too.
That was the weird thing because all these injuries kept
piling up and yet it didn't bite them at all.
And we were like, when's the other shoe going to drop?
And it wasn't, and then it finally did. After of course,
you get the bye, like you said, you get the.
Speaker 5 (25:41):
One, So nothing is guaranteed. You and I both know that, yes, right,
So you're trying to tell me this year has the
without being too much of a jackass, Do you think
this year has been enjoyable so far?
Speaker 1 (25:54):
No?
Speaker 5 (25:55):
At five and three. Okay, I'm glad you said that,
and beating Washington is not going to change that yet.
I'm not trying to be a cynic. I'm not trying
to be mister negative. I don't have a dark cloud
over me. I have higher expectations for the team that
I see has grown over the last two years.
Speaker 7 (26:11):
And to be clear, shechep, I agree with that a
lot more than I agree with Jeff's perspective. I just
understand where he's coming from.
Speaker 5 (26:17):
Okay, then my next question to Jeff and anybody who
feels the same way, when do you expect more? Just
because you suffered from the time you were born in
the early seventies, and you had to go through Jeff
Komlow's and Greg Landry's and quarterbacks like that, and you
(26:39):
had to suffer through Rick Forzano and coaches like that
all the way through and you finally got it right.
When will you turn and say now, I can expect more.
If it's not after making the NFC Championship game, If
it's not after going fifteen to two and being the
number one see something that's never happened, when is it?
(27:07):
Tell me when it changes for you? You've got good
young players great. Does it really matter if you have
great young players if they don't win. Do you think
when George Allen coached the Washington Redskins to a world
championship with a bunch of no names and all of
(27:28):
them many people thought too old, so much so that
at halftime they're throwing darts left and right. Just lighten
them up, Billy Kilmer and all those guys, and they won.
Do you think anybody gave a rats ass that they
were all older, or that they were celebrating a parade?
Confatti bass feel good, the feel good belief of hey man,
(27:53):
at least they're winning sometimes. At least they're not the
bottom of the barrel. At least they're not the laughing stock.
At least we don't have to look forward to the draft.
We can look forward to every single weekend during the
regular season of the NFL is over. And they've told
you it's over. They've told you to turn the page.
They've bragged about their young players, and you're gonna sit
(28:15):
there and be satisfied. I'm gonna enjoy the ride, even
though that ride doesn't include getting better at the trade deadline.
Even though that ride includes getting second and third stringers
promoted against opposing teams first stringers and possibly leading to
more injuries, even though it means getting rid of multiple
(28:38):
draft picks to draft a guy who only took three
snaps last week.
Speaker 9 (28:41):
Okay, so shep, shep.
Speaker 7 (28:43):
Let me be clear, because I agree with you more
than I disagree, of course.
Speaker 9 (28:46):
But what I'm saying is I get why. What's the alternative?
Speaker 7 (28:51):
You want people to just say, well, this sucks, whether
this year's lost, this team's not gonna win anything, or.
Speaker 9 (28:59):
I know you're not.
Speaker 5 (29:00):
I never said this team is lost. Look, let me
give you an example of the real quick. Remember when
the Rams traded for Matthew Stafford and the Lions got
Jared Goff and what eventually became Jamior Gibbs and Sam Laporte.
You remember that, of course you do. Yes, they won
the Super Bowl. Everybody thought it was a window. That's it.
They're done now with old players and certain guys retiring, eventually,
(29:24):
it's going to be a problem. They had a problem
at five and twelve. You know what they did. The
next year they went ten and seven. They lost in
the wild card, but they made the playoffs. Last year
they went ten and seven. They lost in the division.
Could have beaten Philadelphia. If that game's played in LA,
it might be different.
Speaker 9 (29:40):
That was a great game.
Speaker 5 (29:41):
Yeah, okay, it was a great game. They share their
six and two. They stubbed their toe. The window didn't close.
All you did was put a screen on it for
the summer. That was it. People act like, oh my gosh,
we've got to keep these guys together because we don't
and we don't do anything, and we do something, we
may sacrifice something. Really good organizations, really good franchises. And
(30:05):
this is why I say it's a test for Brad
Holmes can adjust on the fly. We'll get to some

don't want to go every week and go, boy, this
team stinks because they just lost.
Speaker 9 (38:07):
Who are we peticlarly good.
Speaker 5 (38:08):
Because it's really because they just won. This guy's terrible
because he had an off day. I don't do that,
all right. I don't get so emotionally attached where suddenly
I'm riding that wave. I understand that the other team
is trying to win two. I understand the other team's
got good players too. They've got good coaches, and Brian
Flores and Kevin O'Connell out coached Dan Campbell and the
(38:31):
Lions last Sunday. This has nothing to do with the
loss of Minnesota. This has everything to do with recognizing
and adjusting what a franchise needs to be better. Okay,
I don't know if it's this guy's going to put
us over the top. I'm not suggesting that. All right.
If I thought that were the case, and you needed
(38:52):
only a pass rusher and you want to go all
in on Trey Hendrickson and trade a second round pick
for him from nine games, go ahead and do it.
I'm the guy who said I wouldn't trade a first
round pick for him, all right, last year, when everyone's
like I would give up three first for Max Crosby,
Go ahead, I wouldn't. I think you've got to be
financially responsible. I think you've got to understand what your
(39:15):
team not only needs this year, but moving forward. And
when you don't have a third round pick, you want
to protect your first in your seconds. I get it
when people say to me, ah, yeah, but your first
round pick would be thirtieth if you know, won the
Super Bowl, Well that'd be great. But I also understand
I'm going to need a linebacker because I probably not
resigning Alex Angeloni. I probably will need a tackle unless
(39:37):
you think Giovanni Manu is the real deal, because Taylor
Decker has been hurt and whom knows how many more
years or games you're going to get out of him.
Speaker 9 (39:46):
Yeah, I know you brought to need.
Speaker 5 (39:48):
A backup quarterback. Okay, you're going to because there's so many,
so many games you can play with that feeling, and
there's only so many times you're going to go into
a preseason trying to figure that stuff.
Speaker 7 (39:59):
The idea that I'll late first round pick is worthless, stupid,
I know, And the fact that it gets thrown around
so often just.
Speaker 9 (40:06):
Yet it irks me a little bit.
Speaker 5 (40:07):
It's not just by fans, by the way. I mean,
people do that in our business, it's irresponsible. Yeah, it's
flat out incorrect. They can be All first round picks
should be considered valuable.
Speaker 7 (40:22):
You're getting starters, you know, unless you're picking a quarterback
and you're grooming him or something. Right on right picking
a starter.
Speaker 5 (40:29):
So I said to you yesterday that who's the backup
quarterback for the Detroit Lions. Do you think people know that?
They knew it during the preseason, but now that Jared
Goff's entrenched and they got all these numbers in their
head and they're looking at all these different quarterbacks and
swanted so fun than who they're getting ready for, do
you know who it is? Most people would say, no,
(40:50):
it's Kyle Allen by the way, all right, so do
you think you're gonna Kyle Allen? Actually, there are certain
needs you're going to have next season, no doubt. So
I don't take that lightly at all. But Jeff and
others who have the same belief in Jeff, there was
(41:10):
a time when you had a team that was, I
don't know, pretty good from nineteen ninety two through nineteen
ninety eight. You had a team that was pretty good
through twenty eleven through twenty sixteen. It didn't bother you
that they didn't move forward like when people Again, the
(41:37):
draft picks can be important. The thirtieth pick last year,
do you know who it was? It was Nate Wiggins.
He's a cornerback for Baltimore. He was drafted out of
Clemson and he starts for the Ravens. And before you say, well,
the Ravens aren't very good, Nate Wiggins is a good player.
I'm not going to try to convince you that the
(41:59):
thirtieth overall pick isn't worth a damn bull crap it is.
Those things can be really important for a team moving forward.
All right. The thirtieth overall pick, again, this is perfect situation.
Was that the year before was Nolan Smith, who starts
(42:20):
at linebacker for Philadelphia. What's wrong with that? If you
got that, would that help your team? And by the way,
you're going to need a linebacker. I think they're going
to need a linebacker. The thirtieth pick two years ago
or three years ago was George Calaftes. He's a wrecking
(42:44):
ball for Kansas City. I am not telling you those
picks don't matter. I'm asking you later in a draft.
I'm asking you if you could get a solid player,
a solid pro, and surrender a fifth round pick, a
sixth round pick, a seventh round pick, a combination of that.
(43:08):
Why wouldn't you do something like that? And before you say, well,
they wouldn't, they weren't given that option. Why were other
teams given the option? Are they only holding the Lions hostage?
I doubt that. Let me get to some texts. Okay,
there's people out there who want to be heard, and
they deserve to be heard. You can call us on
the Meyer Hotline eight six six eight three eight forty
eight forty three or Texas Sports Radio to twenty one thousand,
(43:31):
Trent fire Away with the text.
Speaker 7 (43:32):
Somebody texts in and says that that caller Jeff must
have been Brad Holmes.
Speaker 9 (43:39):
That made me chuckle.
Speaker 5 (43:40):
Yeah, that's funny. Look, I try to take the perspective.
I always anytime I talk about certain subjects, I think
of the opposite side. So Jeff gave us the opposite
side of how I'm feeling, So I try to understand
where he's coming from.
Speaker 9 (43:56):
Debate yourself.
Speaker 5 (43:57):
I yes, I probably do it too often. I'm not
trying to convince Jeff that after eight games, the final
nine games you should sit there with your head in
your hand and say, I can't believe they didn't do
this on Terray deadline Day. I want you to enjoy
the game. I want you to enjoy the game against Washington.
I want you to enjoy the Philadelphia host against the
Giants host on Thanksgiving against Green Bay. I want you
(44:18):
to enjoy the rest of the season, and I hope
this team literally kicks me and everybody else who was
questioning it in the teeth and win the Super Bowl.
I'm asking you, do you think this team is as
complete as it could be? That's all. When you went
into the game against Tampa and you had the legion
(44:39):
of homeback there, how confident were you? I thought Baker
Mayfield was going to pick them apart.
Speaker 9 (44:45):
A lot of people were very worried. Yes they should be.
Speaker 5 (44:48):
Yep, you didn't know anybody. Your hope was. I said,
the only chance they have to win this game is
if they get after Baker Mayfield and they pressure them,
and they did. Reportedly, according to Pro Football Focus, they
had thirty pressures, so that helped. Right Ironically enough, according
to Next Gen Stats, Minnesota had thirty pressures against Jared
Goff and a big reason why he struggled, Which is
(45:11):
funny to me when people say, what Jared Goff, he
can't handle the pressure. Look at what he did against Minnesota. Well,
Baker Mayfield was an MVP candidate, Detroit pressured him. Look
at what he did against Detroit. But I digress. What
I'm asking people here is when you look at this team,
do you see every team's got weaknesses, but do you
(45:34):
see a glaring weakness on this team and do you
feel like it could have been addressed? That's what needs
to be debated now. It's hard when you don't know
what other teams are asking for from the Lions. But
when I give you other trades that have been made
to shore up their teams with players who are starters
(45:56):
or second strings instead of you using your own third strings,
that to me is a pretty telling sign. And they
didn't do it.
Speaker 7 (46:06):
Next text right or wrong, the Lions are clearly trusting
their own reinforcements and staying true to themselves. I was
disappointed yesterday, just like everyone, but I'm not gonna lie.
Speaker 9 (46:16):
I'm not gonna kill him for it. This is their philosophy.
Speaker 5 (46:20):
So there, that's well said, well crafted. The question is
Why can't we question Brad Holmes's philosophy because it's been successful? Right,
twelve and five NFC Championship game.
Speaker 9 (46:36):
Yeah, that's the idea.
Speaker 5 (46:38):
Fifteen to two, number one seed success is relative the
success for this team. And to his credit, he's the
one who raised the bar for us. He's the one
who created the higher expectation. He's the one who I
look at and I say, because him, I can expect more.
(47:02):
That's a compliment. That's the ultimate compliment, is saying, you
know what, you're good enough to do that job.
Speaker 9 (47:11):
I believe in you.
Speaker 5 (47:13):
I hope a lot of people have felt that in
in work. Okay, in their jobs, you're good enough. I
trust you get it done. When you don't get it done,
how do you feel? How do you feel about that?
You're probably pissed off. You should do some self You
should do some self soul searching. Should you not? Holy crap?
(47:36):
Why didn't I get it done? That is I'm not
when I complain about this. This is not a knock
on Brad Holmes. It's the ultimate compliment to Brad Holmes.
I expected more out of him because I expect more
out of his team because of what he's done for
this team and what he's done for us as a
fan base to say we believe in you. It's not
(48:01):
blind faith. There's a difference, Okay. Blind faith is just hey,
you know, whatever you do works. Okay, if everything he
did was it works, then we wouldn't be worried about
third round picks.
Speaker 9 (48:16):
Blind faith. It's the Kansas City Chiefs. That's what blind
faith is.
Speaker 7 (48:19):
You have a track record of winning super Bowls even
when you don't look great. So you go through the
season and you might fall to three and four, but
you have blind faith, and that's okay because it's warranted.
Speaker 5 (48:30):
This is not that, No, it's not they haven't earned
blind faith. They've earned faith, but they haven't earned where
I'm sorry. I'm never gonna question you in anything you do. Well, sorry,
but just about every organization that happens. If you don't
think people were questioning what Robert Craft and his patriots
were doing at one point, you're crazy.
Speaker 9 (48:51):
Of course they were.
Speaker 5 (48:53):
Why would you go sign this guy? Why would you
draft that guy? And then you can be proven wrong.
But there's nothing wrong with saying right now, listen, Brad,
it's not that we don't love you. It's not that
we don't like you, it's not that we don't think
you're good at what you do. We just were hoping
that you would be better in this regard. And I
(49:17):
think there's a lot of people tired of the we're
good statement. But also, and in fairness to Brad Holmes,
this isn't all his fault. I think they're tired of
hearing it from Scott Harrison. They're tired of hearing it
from Steve Eisman, and now they hear it from Brad Holmes.
And all they were thinking is I wanted you to
be different. I hope you wouldn't fall into that trap.
(49:38):
Why in the world do I have to hear from
Scott Harrison saying sorry, didn't want them to take any
of our top ten picks or our top ten drafts
picks or prospects. I should say, can't do that. We've
got to hold out of those guys, even if it
means what losing in Game five with our Cy Young
(50:02):
Award winner on the mound for a second straight year. Hm.
Would it be different if we were at home? Perhaps,
Would it be different if we didn't play in the
first round? Perhaps? And yet we're left to go, Okay, well,
that season's over. It's time for football season. Now we
(50:23):
can have higher expectations. Not according to Jeff, we're just
supposed to enjoy the ride. Next text, go ahead.
Speaker 7 (50:31):
Are you per friend? Ronaldo? He says, do you think
Glasgow's solid at center? Will they draft or sign a
center in the offseason? Can't believe we're looking that far ahead.
Speaker 5 (50:40):
But well, I think that's it's okay to look that
far ahead. I think day rat Ledge is going to
be your center. It's what they originally wanted based on
the early depth chart. So I think that's what's going
to happen, and you're going to get a guard. Maybe
that's Miles Frasier. Okay, maybe their long term plan would
(51:03):
be rat Legit center, Frasier at right guard, Mahogany at
left guard, Giovanni Manuitt left tackle, and Penney Sule at
right tackle. Personally, I hope they draft an offensive lineman
this year, but I think that's what you're gonna see.
Do I think Graham Glasgow is solid at center? Probably not,
(51:28):
But remember this, you and I are both measuring against
one of the best centers of his generation, and arguably
the best center in Lions history in Frank Ragnow.
Speaker 7 (51:40):
Yeah, there's gonna be a drop off there by default,
almost right. Obviously you lose a guy like Frank Ragnow,
Obviously everyone wanted him back.
Speaker 9 (51:49):
But when he leaves, it doesn't matter.
Speaker 7 (51:51):
How average or you know, serviceable your new center can be.
He's not gonna be Frank Ragnow's amplified that way.
Speaker 5 (52:01):
Yes, And what we're doing here is you're you're looking
at it and you're going, hey, listen, this is a
guy who set a certain standard, and we are thinking
that that standard has to be upheld. It's tough to
have that. It's tough to do that when your guy
(52:24):
is it's, first of all, it's not his best position,
first and foremost. Second of all, it's a it's a
massive standard to try and reach. Yep, you just can't.
You just can't do it. Now, I don't know. I'm
not going to try to claim that you know who
(52:44):
the Lions would target in the upcoming draft. That's it's
not necessary. You know, Maybe it's that's Spencer Fano, who's
a pretty damn good player on the offensive line. Maybe
it's something like that. I've started to look at it
a Caden Proctor, for example. I've started to look at
that a little bit. Ones out of Utah, by the way,
(53:05):
and Proctor's out of Alabama both are tackles, so maybe
that doesn't work. But my point is that Connor Luke
Kidd out of Auburn is a really good player too.
He's a center. There could be there's going to be
a time for that. You and I don't have to
worry about that when you've got more games left than
you've already played. I don't know what they would do
(53:28):
had they gone and got a Kevin Zeitler and Andrew
Wiley or an Evan Neil. You know, I had asked,
do you honestly believe that Evan Neil would have cost
Detroit a first or a second round draft pick just
because he was drafted seventh overall? Hell no, he wouldn't
have cost that, Which always takes me back to the
(53:48):
call or the text a couple of years ago, or
maybe it was before this season, Trent, where somebody actually
texted us and said I would trade Hendon Hooker for
a first round pick, and you and I kind of left.
Hendon Hooker literally was released by Carolina the other day.
Next text, go ahead.
Speaker 7 (54:09):
Shep What do you think the Lions do going forward
after the trade deadline, now that nothing has been done?
Speaker 5 (54:16):
What can they do?
Speaker 9 (54:17):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (54:18):
I don't know, honestly, what can they do? It's a
fair question, though it's a fair question. I think what
people really want to know too is you know, how
do you how do you view the rest of the season. So,
I mean, they're going to be favored to win in Washington,
They're going to be an underdog against Philly, They'll be
favored against New York, Green Bay might be a push.
(54:40):
Dallas they'll be favored. They'll be an underdog to the Rams.
They'll be favored against Pittsburgh, They'll be probably a push
against Minnesota, and Chicago's same thing. That last game might
end up being kind of scary, which pisses me off.
And you two probably yeah, because it's Ben Johnson. So
(55:00):
you've got nine games left. Could you see them going one, two, three, four, five,
maybe six and three and suddenly they've got eleven wins?
I predicted thirteen maybe maybe eleven wins? Does that get
you in a lot? Depends?
Speaker 7 (55:20):
It should? Well, it should, Well, we talked about this yesterday.
Speaker 9 (55:23):
There's really no I didn't. NFC is pretty strong this year.
Speaker 5 (55:27):
You and I didn't think, you know, there would be
certain teams in the same mix. You didn't think Seattle
would be this good. No, you didn't think Carolina would
be even mentioned.
Speaker 9 (55:37):
Hell, no, Chicago in your own division.
Speaker 5 (55:39):
I know, well, I wanted to avoid that, but you
couldn't help me. All right, when I come When we
come back, an MLB voice has what I would consider
a rather odd trade scenario. Shouldn't surprise this coming from him.
We'll explain when we come back. Brought to you by Meyer.
Speaker 3 (55:56):
After this, it's raining cash cash cash did so.
Speaker 8 (55:59):
I hurt my hip at the gym and ended up
with Phi Urgent Care.
Speaker 9 (56:03):
They really took care of me.
Speaker 2 (56:04):
They referred me.
Speaker 8 (56:05):
To one of their physios and while working on my core,
the physio noticed I was walking a little oddly, so
she refers me to a VHI podiatrist and he was.
Speaker 10 (56:15):
Able to help me correct my gait.
Speaker 9 (56:17):
So, yeah, it was. It was really great how VHI
was able to connect on the dots.
Speaker 1 (56:23):
VHI because your health means everything.
