You're still the same person I was yesterday, and I
got the same thing for you that I had yesterday.
Speaker 4 (01:47):
You know why I'm here.
Speaker 9 (01:49):
You play to win the game. You don't play to
just play it. That's a great thing about sports. You
play to win, and I don't care if you don't
have any whins. Do you go play to win? When
you start telling me it doesn't matter to retire, get out.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
For the map.
Speaker 8 (02:12):
Good morning, everybody. I'm glad you're with us on Exus
and Bros. Throughout the great state of Michigan. I'm Matt Shepard.
The phone number on the Meyer hotline should you chair
to share to get the car to get involved with
our program. Eight sixty six eight three eight forty eight
forty three Kowas, Texas Sports Radio twenty one thousand. Piston's
(02:33):
really impressive again last night. They extend their winning streak
to four one fourteen one oh three in the win
over Utah, Cad Cunningham and Jalen Duran each boasting double doubles.
Cunningham goes nuts for thirty one points. He had nineteen,
by the way, in the fourth. He leads the entire
NBA in fourth quarter points this year, also hands out
(02:55):
ten assists. Duran had twenty two points twenty two rebounds.
Both help hold the Jazz to just thirty eight and
a half percent shooting, and Detroit is second in the
NBA in that category. Impressive stuff. They continue to look.
You're not gonna win every single quarter of every single game.
You and I should both know that by now, all right,
(03:16):
And you're not gonna win every game. But on the
four game role, this team continues to impress. Whether it's
coming back and I don't know what you call a
comeback in the NBA anymore. It's kind of like the NFL.
If you're down seven to ohn after one, is it
a comeback win in the NFL? In the NBA, if
(03:36):
you're down ten in the third, is it a comeback win? Technically?
I guess it is. But Detroit doesn't seem to blink
much down the stretch, and you're seeing more and more
players X players, they should say, and analysts coming out
and talking about the Pistons, about their strength, about their
(03:59):
power inside. Sure, Kate Cunningham is the massive reason on
why this team is at six and two. He's one
of the best players in the world. You could make
the argument that he's the best guard in the East anyway. Donovan,
Mitchell and Cleveland would have something to say about that,
(04:19):
but he is one of those guys that every team
would love to have. The young guys, though of Jalen
Duran and Isaiah Stewart seem to have taken a very
significant step in their development, and Duran said after the
game last night that he and kid Cunningham have basically
(04:41):
scratched the surface. So we'll get into that here on
Exes and Bros with you, without whatever comments you may
have on the Pistons sports in general. Eight sixty six
forty eight forty three. Baseball free agency begins tonight at
five o'clock. The Tigers have nine free agents. Glaber Torres
(05:01):
and Kyle Finnigan are the key free agents. Right, Yeah,
you're not worried too much about Chris Paddock. I don't
think I doubt you're worried about Paul Seawoll. What are
we going to do by losing them? Who knows? But
Torres played well enough for you to at least warrant
(05:26):
another look. And Kyle Finnigan's the guy you would think
you'd want to have back at the back end of
your bullpen. Former Lions head coach Buddy Parker, who I know.
I know, you don't necessarily know a guy who coached
this team from nineteen fifty one through nineteen fifty six.
I don't know either. All you can do is read
up on him. But he is part of a nine
(05:47):
member group of coaches who are semi finalists for the
Pro Football Hall of Fame Coaches category. Parker won an
NFL title as a rookie, not as a rookie coach,
but as a rookie player. He played for the Lions
nineteen thirty five full back linebacker. He would later coach
this team for six years from nineteen fifty one through
(06:08):
nineteen fifty six. Okay, he won forty seven games, he
lost twenty three games, and he tied to the significant
is that he also won two NFL championships, not Super Bowls,
we know that right, And he played in a third
(06:32):
so there's something to be said for that, don't you think.
I mean, when people talk about the Lions coaches of
all time, who's the best? We think Dan Campbell is
the best, not because he's coaching now, but because his
numbers are really impressive. Right, He's got what seventy two
regular season wins? I think George Clark had seventy four.
(06:55):
I believe it was forty eight. He coached in seventy
four games. When you can bring up just just a
handful of coaches, we're talking about a guy Buddy Parker,
who was I think, I don't know, the sixth seventh
all time coach the Lions ever had, the ninth okay,
the ninth all time coach the Lions ever had, and
(07:18):
the only one to win multiple championships. George Wilson won
a championship, the last one in nineteen fifty seven, all right,
and before Ween Fontz took over the mantle, it was
with sixty six wins. It was George Wilson who held
that mantle with only fifty three. Think of that now,
(07:41):
Dan Campbell, who has coached in seventy two and has
won forty three. Campbell's got a winning percentage of fifty
nine and a half percent. That's pretty damn good, all right,
to put that in perspective, Wilson had one at fifty
four percent. Buddy Parker's was sixty seven. So he's in
that coaches category and he was coach of the year.
(08:04):
He and Wilson Coaches of the Year. There's only been
let's see, four, four Lions coaches who've ever had that honor.
Four coaches who've had that honor. Buddy Parker, George Wilson,
ready for it, Darryl Rogers, he was AP Coach of
the Year in nineteen ninety one, and Wayne fonz I
(08:27):
didn't think it was Rogers. No, it's not Rogers, it's Fons.
He's done it twice. Okay, he did it nineteen ninety one,
and yeah, for the AP and for the Pro Football Weekly,
that's what it was. Okay. So there's only been there's
only been three three, three Lions coaches who've ever been
named Coach of the Year. Buddy Parker, George Wilson, and
Wayne Fonts. And I know a lot of people feel
(08:49):
like Dan Campbell should have been a year ago. I
get it. Kevin O'Connell definitely worthy, but Dan Campbell should
have been at least mentioned in that and was finished
as a runner up. So anyway, he's in the He
could be in the Coaches Hall of Fame or Pro
Football Hall of Fame in the coaches category. Remember Pittsburgh,
He went to Pittsburgh too, so the Steelers like to
(09:10):
claim him as theirs. For crying out loud, here's our
poll question of the day, Our Mitch Lions Well Pole
question of the day. Which Detroit decision maker do you
trust most? Brad Holmes, Scott Harris, Trajan Langdon Steve Eisman.
The reason we asked this question today obviously the trade deadline,
(09:33):
because it came and went the other day with no
movement by the lines except a practice player. I know
people were upset about Scott Hairs. I would say Brad
Holmes would have won this easily if we asked this
question a year ago, and I believe we did. Steve
Eiserman has made some decisions that has allowed Detroit to
(09:54):
be a lot more competitive. They just won three of
the five games on the road trip home against the
Rangers tomorrow night, the first of seven of the next
eight at Little Caesars Arena, Trajan Langdon with some of
his decisions. At least Duncan Robinson only had nine points
again last night. I mean, this team's being carried by
three guys primarily has gotten some mixed reviews on Karris
(10:18):
LeVert and Duncan Robinson being acquired, and then people are
wondering just a little bit, what about the extension for
Jalen Durhan or a guy like Jade and Ivy. So
there's a reason why you might have pause for all four,
but a reason you might credit all four. I think
it's a good question. You can vote as often as
you want at XP Mornings or at CHEP Matt. I'll
(10:38):
retweat it and we'll give you the results tomorrow in
the eight o'clock hour when we come back. The lofty
expectations for the Pistons and how they embrace it that's
coming up next on Xus and Bros. Brought to you

Speaker 3 (11:44):

the sports that bring us together. Heineken zero zero.
Speaker 8 (12:23):
Back with you on ACTUALLYS and Bros. Monday through Friday
six until nine eighteen after the hour. The Pistons look.
We always talk about expectations in the National Football League,
in Major League Baseball and each other in sports in general.
And we talk about expectations. The Pistons always talk about
(12:44):
having goals. I would guess every team does that. Every
player does that. They have long they have short term goals, right.
Pistons have long term goals too, and I love that
about this team, but they're not unlike any other team.
What I love most is what those goals are, what
(13:04):
the expectations for them are, and because they've done this,
it's important that we hold them accountable. Kate Cunningham recently said,
we're just taking it one game at a time because
we have high goals. We want to bet be the
best team in the league. We want to raise the
trophy at the end of the day. That's the ultimate
(13:26):
goal and we are keeping that in mind, just trying
to work and see where we go. Okay, that's Kate Cunningham.
That's the captain. That's the best player on the floor
night in the night out for Detroit. That's the best
player on this team, best player in this organization. Eventually
could be one of the better players this organization has
ever had. And he's the one saying that this is
(13:49):
not dissimilar to win. Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes talked
about Super Bowl before the season. So when we come
out and we talk about high expectations and we'll get
into this in the seven o'clock hour, because one of
our callers yesterday. Jeff really made me think over the
(14:11):
last night and later in the afternoon yesterday and last night.
So we'll get into that in the seven o'clock hour.
But when you have expectations, it's a good thing. Quite honestly,
it's a compliment. It's a compliment to your organization that
you expect them legitimately to win the championship if you
(14:32):
think they are good enough, and they think they're good enough.
Teams that come out, players that come out and say
these things feel like they are good enough. This is
not Ron garden Higher putting a sign on the door
in lakelan and spring training in twenty nineteen that says
why not us, or a picture of the World Series Championship.
(14:57):
It's not what it is. They had no chanceants and
every player knew that. Anybody associated with the organization knew
that the Pistons two years ago couldn't talk this way.
And some people may think it's a little premature, but
here's what you have. You have a superstar who is
leading this team every single night. It's not just one game.
(15:20):
He is the constant. And really what you've been able
to do is not just the one superstar, but you've
seen the two young players Jalen Duran Isaiah Stewart become
steady forces as well, guys who night in and night
(15:41):
out you are depending on. And the tag team is special,
it really is. But on top of that, it's their
defense and their defense down low. When people last year
talked about, well we would have beaten New York if
we had Isaiah Stewart, I scaw at that. The way
(16:02):
he plays defense now and to a certain extent, the
way he played a year ago, makes you truly believe.
It makes you say, yeah, I get why you were
saying that, and it's understandable. Again, you can look at
if we wanted to be super technical, and we looked
at the Lions' losses to a couple of really good
(16:25):
teams Green Bay, Kansas City specifically, I don't think of
Minnesota's a really good team. And then you translated that
schedule over to the Pistons and said, well, the best
team they've played this year, Cleveland beat him handily. They
beat him one thirty five. Now, what was that? One
sixteen to ninety five is what it was, one sixteen
(16:47):
ninety five. I was at that game. It was It
was a tough watch. You don't do that in an
eighty two game slate. You're gonna get a few more
cracks at Cleveland, So don't worry about that reeling off
four straight. I don't care who you're playing. Orlando was
viewed as this team that's, oh, they're going to be
the three seed in the NBA. They're the team that
(17:10):
is going to make that big jump. They got better
in the offseason, That's what we were told. Orlando's three
and five, okay, And again it's really early, so why
jump to too many conclusions. It's not necessarily. What is
necessary is to see how your team performs, how it
bounces back from a loss. We've said this about the Lions.
(17:32):
We've said it about the Tigers, Okay, how it bounces
back from a loss, and the style of play in
which they play, and are they staying consistent and true
to that style? And it sure seems like the Pistons are.
It's hard not to like. I mean Cay Cunningham. Ever
since he was drafted number one overall out of Oki State,
(17:54):
everybody has loved him, and to his credit, he has
showed that affection in return earn by being available in
Detroit and going out and living the Detroit life all right.
So kudos to him for sure. It started from the
very get go, his ability to take over games. Obviously,
(18:14):
his ability to help others elevate their game. I think
he's done that with Derren and Isaiah Stewart. The problem
that I'm having with them right now is it's those
three and everybody else. And there was there used to
be saying that you need a couple of superstars. Back
(18:34):
in the eighties nineties, you needed at least a couple
of stars. Now the belief is you need three guys. Well,
Detroit's got three guys. Let's see if this puts that
theory to the test. You've got to have some consistent
contributors in other ways. And this is perhaps where they're
(18:55):
missing Jade and Ivy right now, because right now you've
got a very pedestrian two guys who were signed in
the offseason, and Karris LeVert and Duncan Robinson. Neither one
and LeVert hasn't played every year, neither one has been
able to carry a team in a quarter, let alone
a game. And I don't think they were brought in
(19:16):
to carry the team in a game. That's Kate Cunningham
and what you were hoping for any somebody else, and
it appears that Duran and Stewart have kind of taken
that mantle, which is great, but eventually you're going to
need others to contribute more than what they are right now.
(19:36):
But while we wait for that, I think the more
enjoyable thing is that we've got three young guys, three
home grown guys that's really important, who are leading the
way in a decisive fashion. They are proving to be
not just the best players on their team, but three
(20:01):
of the better players at their positions in all the NBA.
For what they do. I'm not going to claim that
Isaiah Stewart's one of the best big men in the league,
but what you can claim he's one of the best
rim protectors in the league. And it shows by the
numbers early on right now, you cannot deny that we
(20:23):
already knew that about Kid Cunningham thirty one points last night,
averaging twenty four and a half. I had a friend
of mine tell me yesterday, yeah, I can see him,
you know, getting to that thirty level on a regular basis.
I'm like, you, realize, there's only three guys who have
thirty points per game or better last year, right, Jay Gilgus,
(20:44):
Alexander Janis Sonte Tegumpo, and nikoley Jokic. That was it.
So you're asking an awful lot of thirty points per game,
but the strength and the elevation of Jalen in his
game is worth noting eighteen points, eleven and a half boards,
but maybe more importantly, twenty eight and a half minutes
(21:07):
a game. You know what that means. That means he's
not fouling like he used to. Those are great signs
and let's hope it continues. By the way, Kid Conhan
also nine and a half assist per game. Very gifted passer,
underrated passer if he can hold onto the ball and
make the right decisions. When we come back, we'll replay
our interview yesterday with Pat Kirwin, and we had it
(21:28):
at eight thirty. I know sometimes you know people are
tuning at different times. Didn't necessarily hear it at eight
thirty yesterday, So we're going to replay it because it's
really informative, really good about the Lions, the trade deadline
on a whole lot more. Stay with us. This is

a long time respected voice in the world of the
National Football League, and he's kind enough to take some
time out of his Wednesday morning to join us here
on Exis and Bros. Pat, We appreciate it very much.
What was your overall takeaway from the trade deadline day?
(23:15):
What jumped out to you?
Speaker 7 (23:17):
A couple of things in general. Number One, most outside
in New England who earlier dumped on Kyla Dugger and
Keyon White, almost every other team is a losing team,
basically giving up and getting draft compensations.
Speaker 6 (23:33):
So you just look at them. The records of the
team that did most strengths.
Speaker 7 (23:36):
Three and five, one and seven, one and eight, two
and six, two and six, one and eight, two and seven,
three and six.
Speaker 6 (23:42):
Bye bye.
Speaker 7 (23:43):
And the second piece to that, which is a warning
to the players, is not a lion problem.
Speaker 6 (23:48):
By the way, ten of the big trades were by
new head coaches, first year head coaches, So what happened?
They got the job. They're not winning. They looked at
the rosters, specifically like the Jets, and said, I'd rather
have draft pics than try to coach these guys in
the becoming winners. So they moved on. 's got great compensation.
Speaker 7 (24:11):
So those two things, and I say to players, you're
going to get coaches fired this year.
Speaker 6 (24:16):
And guess what they're going to do. They're going to
do the same thing to you. They're going to wait
and then they're going to dump out on you. So
if you want to keep your job, try to win
a few.
Speaker 7 (24:25):
Games here down the stretch before the new head coach
comes in.
Speaker 6 (24:28):
So those two things jumped out of me. And then
I think the Quentin Williams trade was and I'll ask you,
was it really a reaction to losing Parsons? Was that?
Speaker 8 (24:39):
I don't know that. I just I would ask you this,
or I would respond by saying this, it seems like
an odd way to try and rebuild the defense.
Speaker 6 (24:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (24:50):
I got to ask the Miller and Molton show about
did I think these two moves Williams and Wilson are
going to change the fortunes of the team year?
Speaker 6 (25:00):
And I would say, no, I don't think they're going
to be.
Speaker 7 (25:02):
There's enough, not enough impact from those two guys. One
guy was benched, by the way, if you want.
Speaker 6 (25:08):
To trade a player, trade him before you bench him,
right the second you mention, his value goes down.
Speaker 4 (25:15):
So Logan Wilson three weeks.
Speaker 7 (25:16):
Ago, and they thought they were done with Wilson. They
should have traded him right then, probably got a fifth
for him. He was the captain of the team, led
him in tackles, but they were done with him.
Speaker 6 (25:25):
But once you put him on the bench, a seventh
was all you're going to get. So I don't think
Quinn Williams and Wilson are going to change the fort
They'll be a little better, but I don't think they're
gonna Mark Miller asked me, do you think they're going
to become a playoff wild card team? It's no, I
don't think so.
Speaker 7 (25:41):
So I don't think there's not enough there to get
that done.
Speaker 8 (25:46):
I get that, and you, guys, I say this all
the time, not just with you, but but other network stations.
It's so hard to cover every team in the league.
I mean you are. You get focused on so many
different moves and so many different teams and have to
know their personnel. It's really challenging. So you get asked
a lot about the Jets. You get asked a lot
about the Cowboys, and when I listen to your show,
(26:07):
I hear that quite a bit. I'm going to focus
obviously on the Detroit Lions. Was there a player who
was traded that the Lions could have or should have
pursued more vigorously that would have helped turn around some
of the more misfortunes they've had recently?
Speaker 6 (26:24):
Well, I think I do. Your team is maybe the
best team in the NFC when I get.
Speaker 7 (26:30):
Asked out a lot, and I still hold on to
the trade as the best team.
Speaker 6 (26:34):
But the one guy that I would have gone after,
and maybe you did, and that's how it got to
a third round picker, Jalen Phillips.
Speaker 7 (26:41):
Yeah right, I've been saying all year I would love
to see a better player opposite Hutchinson.
Speaker 6 (26:49):
Usually when you have a guy like hutch and the
protection is going to hutch all.
Speaker 7 (26:52):
The time, that the other guy should be a ten
to twelve sack guy because he's singled all the time,
if he's got capable skills. I didn't think Davenport was
going to be that guy, and so I would have.
Speaker 6 (27:04):
But I promised you for it to get to the
third round.
Speaker 7 (27:07):
Pick, considering all the sixth and sevenths that went in
these trades. I think I would have made a move
there and they didn't, so that'd be the one that
I think would have helped him the most.
Speaker 8 (27:19):
Yeah, Detroit didn't doesn't have a third round pick in
twenty twenty six. They use that to move up with
Isaac Tieslaw, who they drafted out of Arkansas. They have
a first, a second, of fourth, a fifth. They have
two sixth and two seventh.
Speaker 7 (27:32):
Yeah, I think, but I think that the Philadelphia pick
in the third round it's probably going to be ninety six.
Speaker 6 (27:40):
Yeah, So when you.
Speaker 7 (27:41):
Don't have a third, you give them the fourth and
the fifth. What's the fourth and what's the fifth? I mean,
you could make draft compensation if.
Speaker 6 (27:48):
You but they clearly didn't have the desire to do it.
Speaker 7 (27:51):
Otherwise they would have, but you asked me where I
would have gone. Look, it was predominantly a defensive trading day.
Speaker 6 (27:58):
If you look at it that way.
Speaker 7 (28:00):
I did like at least ten of these players were
defensive guys. And the one that I think would have
helped your.
Speaker 6 (28:05):
Team is at Phillips. And if you didn't.
Speaker 7 (28:07):
Have the wherewithal it's doing, you could have put a
player into it. You know, there's lots of ways to
get compensation that equals with Philadelphia game, which is probably
picked ninety six.
Speaker 8 (28:17):
I don't disagree with that at all. Help me with this,
because this is what I get from a lot of
people when I do shows, and they don't treasure your
first round picks. If you win the super Bowl or
if you get to the super Bowl, you're going to
be picking around thirty anyway. And I say Nay Wiggins
was the thirtieth pick last year. The year before was
Nolan Smith, the year before that was Carl Loftis in
(28:38):
Kansas City. You can get really effective and important and
starters at that thirtieth overall pick the mindset of people
who feel like you've got a quote unquote go for
it and you don't value the picks. How do you
react to something like that, depending on the team and
depending on the general manager.
Speaker 6 (28:57):
Well, I don't think I would be going for it.
Speaker 7 (29:00):
More than once every few years at the very best,
because you have to be convinced that you are a
Super Bowl contender and you're one player short, or maybe two.
Speaker 6 (29:13):
But if you're more than two players short, you're really
not a super Bowl contender.
Speaker 7 (29:17):
Now, if you're repairing an injury issue, multiple injuries in
the offensive line.
Speaker 6 (29:22):
Light the Chargers are.
Speaker 7 (29:24):
You're just trying to patch up the line to keep
your quarterback up right.
Speaker 6 (29:27):
And stay alive in a playoff race. But if you
keep playing the game of giving away.
Speaker 7 (29:34):
Picks for players, you are going to get into cats.
Speaker 6 (29:38):
Jail sooner or later.
Speaker 7 (29:41):
You absolutely need a constant injection of rookie salaries to
offset the megabuck guys and keep your books in balance.
Speaker 6 (29:51):
And you can look at the Jets and just say
they're not very good.
Speaker 7 (29:55):
They're going to get these picks, which I think is great,
and that's going to help them absorb a bigger and
go look at their debt money for next year. They
still owe the cap thirty two million for Rogers, and
I think the top four guys on the dead pool
are fifty six million dollars.
Speaker 6 (30:14):
Wow. So it'll be nice to have those rookies on rookie.
Speaker 7 (30:18):
Deals where their cats aren't very severe considering what the
veteran dead cap thing is. So I think that managing
your cap is part of being successful, and when you
do it right, you land up with a good team
and a quality depth and room to make moves.
Speaker 6 (30:36):
So that's a pretty good example of that.
Speaker 8 (30:38):
Yeah, great perspective. Pat Kerwin joining this here on EXS
and Bros. Fall m on Twitter at Pat Kerwin Underscore NFL.
He hosts Moving the Chains with Jim Miller. He's the
editorial consolo NFL Today's show, also the author Take Your
Eyes Off the Ball two point zero. When you look
at the amount of cap space Detroit had, I think
it was the fourth most right now. And you know,
(31:00):
obviously Brad Holmes is saving some of that to sign
some of his younger guys eventually, but as of right now,
they had that. You said that you think they're the
best team in the NFC. I think it's the Rams
right now. But that's when we can debate that all
we want.
Speaker 4 (31:13):
What makes you.
Speaker 8 (31:14):
Think Detroit is the best considering they've probably lost to
the two best teams on their schedule so far in
Kansas City and Green Bay.
Speaker 7 (31:24):
Well, Kansas City is not going to be a problem
for their advance to the NFC Championship Game. I was
at the Buffalo Kansas City game the other day and
they're starting to break down. Maybe they think getting the
rookie tackle back is going to help solve the problems.
But they couldn't block a four man front from Buffalo,
(31:46):
and Buffalo.
Speaker 6 (31:47):
Is playing without Ed Oliver, so I was much surprised.
Speaker 7 (31:51):
I stood right on their sideline and watched, and I go,
they're not even having the blitz.
Speaker 6 (31:55):
So Kansas City is having their own issues right now.
Speaker 7 (31:57):
But I like your team the best because I do
think the two headed monster in the backfield power and speed,
and I know that Gibbs got nailed kicking up blitzes.
Speaker 6 (32:09):
I answer this question yesterday. If I have Gibbs and
he is.
Speaker 7 (32:13):
Not the greatest blitz pickup guy, you know what I say,
the same thing we say.
Speaker 6 (32:18):
About these move tight ends. Move them out into.
Speaker 7 (32:21):
The slot and guess what, Someone's going to get displaced
from the pressure box, and he might be more effective
being out there as the hot receiver.
Speaker 6 (32:30):
You want to blitz that Mike Backer.
Speaker 7 (32:31):
We'll throw hot to Gibbs three yards over the line
of scrimmage and we do it all the time with
tight end.
Speaker 6 (32:37):
I would do it with him, and I think more.
Speaker 7 (32:40):
Pony backfield where he's in the.
Speaker 6 (32:43):
Set with Montgomery, I like to see more of that.
Speaker 7 (32:46):
To tell you the truth, he did take a couple
offensive line injuries, so that is an issue.
Speaker 6 (32:52):
I do like the Rams, but I don't love the Rams,
and I don't know if they're going to win the division.
Speaker 7 (32:57):
Seattle is the most underrated crowd going out right out there,
so I believe you will win your division. I don't
think Green Bay is going to do it. I would
not want to play you at home.
Speaker 8 (33:09):
What's the best division in football?
Speaker 4 (33:10):
And why?
Speaker 6 (33:13):
I think PAFC West without thinking about it, it's you know,
the Raiders are out of it, but the other three
teams could all make the playoffs.
Speaker 7 (33:21):
It's going to be a battle to the top. And
I think that Denver is looking nice.
Speaker 6 (33:26):
No, but I wonder how it's going to shake out if.
Speaker 7 (33:29):
Kansas City doesn't repair the line and Denver is going
to get a prepass from them because of their defense.
And I don't ever count out Kansas City, although as
I said earlier, I was a bit surprised that fifteen
hits on the quarterback in three sacks and they didn't
rush but four guys all the time.
Speaker 6 (33:46):
That would be alarming to me. And you know what,
it reminded me of, reminding me of the two Super
Bowls they lost.
Speaker 7 (33:52):
They lost both of them because they couldn't block for
the past and that would be the problem.
Speaker 6 (33:57):
But I like the division. It's three deep.
Speaker 7 (34:00):
I don't know of another division I really believe is
three D.
Speaker 8 (34:04):
Your division, Well, I was going to say the NFC West,
but even though San Francisco's beat up, I think with
the Rams and as you mentioned Seattle, San Francisco has
been pretty good, that's pretty close. But I agree with you.
I think it is the AFC West. This year. Denver's
been really impressive, even in their low scoring games. Who's
been the biggest surprise for you so far? And who's
been the biggest disappointment.
Speaker 7 (34:27):
Well, the biggest surprise, without thinking about just reacting to
the question, that might be Carolina.
Speaker 6 (34:34):
I didn't really give them much chance for success. And
they're four and one in their last.
Speaker 7 (34:39):
Five games, I think, and they're winning oddly in the
sense I think they scored thirty eight points in their
last three games yet went too and one.
Speaker 6 (34:47):
So I didn't think. I thought the quarterback was going
to probably be a.
Speaker 7 (34:52):
Bus and he's not playing great. They don't ever throw
for over to and I think they have one game
over two hundred yards all year. But I do think
they're a surprise, so I like them as a surprise team.
And the biggest disappointment for me right now is the Commanders.
Speaker 6 (35:08):
You know this is this is a team that played
in the championship game last year. The quarterbacks all beat up.
Speaker 7 (35:14):
When you look at him, I was at their camp
two years in a row, and he's guinea kid and
he's he does effectively run, but he.
Speaker 6 (35:21):
Also takes shots. And I thought when.
Speaker 7 (35:24):
They lost some of their defensive health, Plus they have
guys they count on as they are older, it's starting
to show a little bit and I feel bad for
Dan cooinn at as team.
Speaker 8 (35:34):
Yeah, I agree with all that. That's really good perspective.
I thought you might say Baltimore. Baltimore has been.
Speaker 7 (35:40):
A little diss I think they're gonna bounce right back
and get in this because Pittsburgh, you know, they won
last week and that kind of put the fire out.
But when when Baltimore won on Thursday night, I'm going, hey,
if the coach peek these guys, before you know it,
Ravens are one game behind Pittsburgh, but they helped them
off with a win over the Coast, so that battle
(36:01):
is not going away and Baltimore plays Pittsburgh twice still,
so by the time they do, they should be back
to full strength.
Speaker 8 (36:08):
My expectation for the Lions before the season was the
Super Bowl, and I think I'm justified in that. Why
do you think I shouldn't be or should be in
that belief?
Speaker 6 (36:19):
Well, I told you I like your team the best
in the NFC, So I still think they can get there,
and I wouldn't count them out in that battle.
Speaker 7 (36:29):
But I think the expectations are around the league are
always the same. Most fans, and I'm not calling you
a fan, but most of them say, we're going to
start from where we left off. Whatever we were last
year is our starting point. And I used to say
to all of them.
Speaker 6 (36:46):
That call my show, I go listen.
Speaker 7 (36:48):
I go to New England all the year as Belichick
was there. I go the first week of camp and
he is screaming the.
Speaker 6 (36:54):
Whole time, it's not last year, it's a new year.
Speaker 7 (36:57):
He's constantly was pounting in how they recover and win
so often.
Speaker 6 (37:03):
They have the unique ability to leave the year behind
behind them.
Speaker 7 (37:07):
But most fans want to start from where they left off,
and I think Detroit fans said, hey, we got real close,
so now we're ready to go over the top. I
still think you are one of those teams.
Speaker 6 (37:16):
I don't think you are trapped into fandom. I just
think that it's a little bit rough for a road.
But if I asked you in August, do you think
you're going to go seventeen and zero, you would have
said no, right, yeah.
Speaker 8 (37:29):
I think the loss of rag Noow and Zeitdler has
been a lot more pronounced than people originally thought. Well,
so many.
Speaker 6 (37:38):
People sequence yeah, but it was a sequence of that.
First you let Zeitler go, then Frank retired.
Speaker 8 (37:46):
Correct.
Speaker 6 (37:47):
I'll ask you if Frank retired first, you think they
would have let Zeitler go.
Speaker 8 (37:51):
Probably not, not for nine million dollars, but you and
what you would have done probably has had te Ratledge
play center all training camp and every preseason to get
a little bit more used to it. That's what they
would have done, because it's a weakness right now. Pat,
you do a great job, man. I really enjoy listening
to you and Jim. Keep up the great work. Really
(38:12):
appreciate the time. Hope we can talk sometime again in
the near future.
