All right, back with you on extras and Bros on
this tully More Thursday. Glad you're with us here throughout
the state of Michigan, and of course streaming live on
YouTube X and Facebook. This hour brought to you by
your friends at Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort. What a
baseball game last night for a twenty one to twenty
two year old Trey Savage. I'll tell you what, It's

(01:17):
captivated a lot of people. Ron Blum, Associated Press, who
covers the World Series, a Hall of Fame writer joins
us here on ex'es and bros. Ron really appreciated what
thrilled you most about last night and how Toronto's resolve
over the last two games has been put on display
to take a three to two series lead.

Speaker 4 (01:36):
Well, the way Savage was pitching was just exciting, mixing
three pitches and his splitter, especially darting at the bottom
of the zone, and the Dodgers just couldn't do anything
with them all night.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
Ron, Do you think we're getting to a point now
where more teams are willing to take a chance with
young and dare I say, unproven players with a guy
like y Savage. We've seen it with the Boston New
York series. They've had some guys in there. We saw

(02:12):
it with Cleveland with Chase de Laughter in center field
making his major league debut in the playoffs. Do you
think we're getting to that point? And if so, what
took people so long? Do you think I think.

Speaker 4 (02:25):
It's mostly just teams make any move they have to
at that point of the year, and without attrition and injuries,
a good chance these guys Warren wouldn't have been called up.
And you look at when you Savage came up. They
were just lost Barrios for the rest of the season.

(02:46):
Matt Scherzer was all beat up, so they didn't have
a whole lot of options at that point as they
tried to piece together a rotation for the last few
weeks of the season.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
Yeah, and still a guy who started his season in
low A, it still yeah.

Speaker 5 (03:02):
He was.

Speaker 4 (03:04):
Talking about his first game in Jupiter, Florida with Dunedin
and there was three hundred some odd people in the stands.
Quite a difference last night in baseball's biggest ballpark run.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
It's one of the beautiful things about baseball, isn't it?
Where Ernie Clement can't make Cleveland and yet he's been
really big for Toronto in the postseason. Addison Barger not
many people knew about, and look at how good he's
been aggressive on the bass pass, defensively and some key hits.
It's really a beautiful movie. Almost every single night in

(03:39):
Major League Baseball playoffs, isn't it.

Speaker 4 (03:42):
Yeah, And you look at even last night, George Springer's
banged up, can't get on the field. That plug in
David Schneider, and he hits the first pitch of the
game for a home run and puts him ahead, mimicking
his own batting stands from the minor leagues two years ago,
and joking that like two days ago, he mimicked Will
Smith's batting stance, and Smith's sitting there didn't even notice.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
That's really good. I didn't. I didn't. I didn't know that.
Ron Blum, associated press writer covering the World Series and
a Hall of Fame voter, joining us here on ex'es
and bros. Here throughout the state of Michigan. What has
surprised you, perhaps so far, not just in the playoffs,
but specifically in the World Series, Considering the Dodgers were
a team that you know, everybody knows is the defending

(04:28):
champion and is willing to spend and was up two
games to one. What surprised you, if anything at all?

Speaker 4 (04:34):
Well, for all the moving pieces the Dodgers have and
all the extra resources or bullpen is very banged up,
as we saw. That's why they put rookie Sasaki in
the back end of the bullpen in the last week
of the season. And what surprised me is just the
general slumping of the batting order. And you look yesterday,

(04:57):
Dave Roberts dropped Mookie back lowered than second for the
first time in four years. So Dodgers are hitting just
above the Mendoza line after five games, and they're really stuffling.
And Dave Roberts said things like that tend to get
in players' heads and they get out of their good
swing patterns trying to do too much, and that's what

(05:19):
he's trying to come back.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
Yeah, it's interesting in that Dodgers lineup last night. Save
Alex call and left field, nobody in that really expensive
lineup was hitting a whole lot better than to sixty five,
I think. So you're looking at Otani for as great
as he is and as great as he's given us
some highlights, he's batting just two fifty Mookie Betts to

(05:44):
thirty four, Freddy Freeman to thirty seven. What's it tell us?

Speaker 4 (05:50):
But if you look at Otani, a lot of that
is in the Wildcart Series and the Division Series he
was below two hundred. So he has been really hot
in the World Series up until last night. But we
looked at the numbers and he has twice the ops
of everyone on the team come else in the batting
order combined.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
Vladimir Guerrero Junior another home run last night, setting a
Blue Jays franchise record for postseason homers, more homers than strikeouts.
Has he come into his own or did you think
that he's already been in that space and we're just
stating start. I take no.

Speaker 4 (06:30):
All season long, he's been in that space. If you
watched him the times I've seen him during the year,
he's just been tremendous, not just the play it also defensively.
He's been outstanding, and that's one of the reasons the
Blue Jays were willing to make the long term commitment.
But he is every bit as good as his potential.

(06:52):
He had those seasons two three years ago where he
was banged up and underperform, but from last year and
this year, he's just been at the top of the league.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
Yeah, four fifteen right now in the playoffs for Vladimir
Brewer Junior. Speaking of long term commitments, you know the
story with people here in the state of Michigan Trek Scuoble.
What does your gut tell you that the Tigers in
Schooble do with one another for one more year until
he becomes a free agent.

Speaker 4 (07:21):
My gut is they're going to trade him that will
try to see if they can get a lot of
top line prospects. But to do that, they would have
to get a window deal for the acquiring team to
get a long term contract, and I don't see that
happening with the Scott Borris clients. So I think at

(07:42):
some point this off season they're going to look to
unload him because I don't think they're going to want
to make three hundred dollars a three hundred million dollars
eight year, seven year, or nine year commitments.

Speaker 3 (07:57):
Yeah, I don't disagree with that. I think the number
will actually be for Derek scoobl And I agree with
everything you said.

Speaker 4 (08:02):
The thing that you well, now that's what the number
would be for a deal now a year from now
in free agency, it would be even higher.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
Agreed, When you say prospects, does is that the going rate?
Why wouldn't you be able to get some major league
talent back? Why would it be prospects for the best.

Speaker 4 (08:22):
Picture, Well, I think I think in terms of major
league talent, they would be people who are just breaking
in this year. Because if you're the Tigers, you want
to put together a team of players you can control
now in twenty eight twenty nine looking to peak. Then
to have a salary a lot of salary arbitration guys

(08:45):
who are three plus, four plus, five plus and twenty
six twenty seven when the rest of the team isn't
ready to peak, is probably not the smartest thing to do.

Speaker 3 (08:58):
How much of what's the mate that sends to I
hate the big market small market stuff because I don't
always believe in it because I think Miami is a
huge market and they just don't spend. But what's the
What do you think is the message that sends to
baseball fans in general and to mid major markets like Detroit,

(09:19):
Kansas City, Milwaukee and cities like that.

Speaker 4 (09:24):
Well, the mid and small market teams will use that
for evidence, saying that the system has to change and
looking ahead to collect the bargaining that's going to get
underway at some point in twenty six, and the larger
markets are just going to spend, spend, spend, And you
look the Dodgers are five hundred and nine million in

(09:44):
payroll and luxury tacks, and that doesn't include sospis minor
league contracts, so if you throw that in, it's more
like five d and sixteen million, And then you have
a team like the Marlins down at sixty something million,
so it's seven eight times in total. Now, Rob Man
wants a system that is less skewed to the different segments.

(10:11):
But to do that, the question is what kind of
stoppage would you take to do it? And you don't
really know because up until a ten day period in
March of twenty seven, when the possibility of regular season
games being lost in salary be lost is right there,
you don't know who's bluffing when they say they will

(10:32):
never take this, they will never take that. So it's
hard to tell. Would a salary cap proposal with a
high floor be different, and who knows? The players say
they don't want a cap, And even if there is
a cap, remember it's going to take five ten years
to phase it in because you can't all of a
sudden go to teams like the Dodgers with huge commitments

(10:54):
and make them pair down all at once.

Speaker 3 (10:56):
Yeah, that's a great point, yes or no answer? Is
there going to be a lockout? Do you think after
next year?

Speaker 4 (11:01):
One hundred percent there'll be a lockout starting December second.
Whether it actually causes regular season gems to be lost,
we won't now till that March period in twenty seven.

Speaker 3 (11:11):
Great stuff, Ron, appreciate your expertise, Keep up the great work,
enjoy the rest of the world series. Have a great day.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
Okay, thanks guys, have a good time and enjoy it.

I'm not going to claim to be this my own thought,
but in listening to what Colin Cowhard said the other
day on his National show, it was really well put.
I thought a lot is made of the Michael Jordan,
Lebron James comparison, and it's kind of ridiculous if you

(12:57):
look at their first eleven seasons with their repe teams, folks,
it's not even close. It's not even close. I don't
want to hear people talk about certain lack of effort
from athletes when you have NBA star players sitting out
even though most people believe they're healthy. The reason you're

(13:22):
only seeing eleven players from a year ago play all
eighty two games, and none of them superstars, is because
they're allowed to it's accepted. It's a culture. As Colin
Cowhard put it, it's a culture of me not we
in the NBA right now. And I think it might
be reflective on fans. How many people are watching games,

(13:47):
how many people truly like you see? You see Carson
Wentz from the Minnesota Vikings, and I ripped on the NFL,
and I ripped on Cavin Connell, and I ripped on
the Minnesota Vikings for allowing him to do what he did.
Injured in London against It wasn't the Bears anyway, forget

(14:11):
it was against Cleveland, and he played the next two
and a half games beat up on his left shoulder,
had no business doing. He's out for the rest of
the year because of it. Taking a beating against the Chargers, Okay,
and I blamed the organization. He came out yesterday and said, look,
nobody forced me to do that. I wanted to stay

(14:33):
in the game. It's admirable. It's irresponsible, but it's admirable.
Don't tell me the team couldn't have said something. Teams
do that all the time. You're not going in, we
don't think you're going to be effective. You're not going
in it's not just his decision. Coaches got to step
in and do the right thing. But he came out

(14:56):
and defended his team and the league to a certain extent.
When we watch that, we watch guys grimacing. We watch
guys hustling into the blue tent and then wanting to
come out. We see Cam Scattable going off on a
stretcher and giving us a thumbs up. We see players,
you know, Dan Well, they're playing through pain. We hear

(15:16):
about Taylor Decker not being able to practice all week long,
but he's going to play on Sunday and plays well.
We hear contrition from players in the National Football League
and believing and rightfully so. It's a gladiator sport. You
got to be a tough sob to play that sport.

(15:38):
I don't care what position it is. I don't care
if you're a quarterback, even though you're getting helped out
by a number of different rules and regulations. Now, I
don't care if you're a wide receiver taking a risk
going across the middle on a dig route, knowing the
guy's coming for you. You got to be a tough
son of a gun to play that. Then you see
the NBA and you see all these guys who are saying,

(16:00):
I don't want to play today. What do you do
about it? Honestly, what do you do? They've got a
bit of a problem. And as talented as the league is,
you could argue that in today's day and age, that

(16:22):
they are as gifted athletically as they've ever been, which
doesn't necessarily mean doesn't mean that you're better than everybody else,
all right, It doesn't mean that you're better than everybody
in the past. But there are certain guys who you
want to see him play. You spend I just gave
you the numbers earlier with the Piston situation last year

(16:45):
average fifty bucks a ticket, Okay, And I said, yeah,
I think it's worth it. If you're going to see
let's see, let's say Milwaukee. Who do you want to
see on Milwaukee? Because you're going for more than just
your team. I don't know if people were there last
night to watch Franz Wagner or Paula Boncaro, you probably

(17:08):
want to see Kay Cunningham a lot more. But if
you're going to see Milwaukee, you'd like to at least
watch Janni Sante to compo. It's not the only reason
you're going there. But it's part of the reason, isn't it. Minnesota?
You want to see Anthony Edwards? Right, Phoenix? Now Houston,
you want to see Kevin Durant. What if those guys
decide today it's a load management day. I can stay

(17:32):
up a little bit later, I can eat a little unhealthier.
It's a load management day. In other words, it's I
don't want to play today, I get X amount of
games off. It's PTO at the NBA, is what it is.
You want to see certain players play. Golden State San

(17:56):
Antonio made this famous because the great Greg Popovich and
the great Steve Kerr listen to everything that they say. Popovich,
I'm going to rest my guys. I don't care what
you say. Is it really proven to be effective that
if you miss more games you're going to be better
and fresher in the playoffs? Show me the study that

(18:19):
tells me that and convinces me of that. So a
guy like Steph Curry, who's a hell of a player,
he's the greatest shooter of all time. He plays what
sixty nine games? Seventy games? He missed twelve games. I
said this to Trent in the break in the fifteen seasons.

(18:41):
We'll say what you want about Michael Jordan. Fifteen seasons
of Michael Jordan. Do you know how many times or
how many games he missed? He missed sixty four? He
played eighty two games or more? What was it, Trent?

(19:02):
Eight times? Right? Yeah, yes, eight times? Do you know
how many times? Again, sometimes it's unfair, but this is
what happens. Do you know how many times that load
management has crept in for Lebron James? You know how
many times he's played eighty two games in a season?

Speaker 7 (19:18):
I remember he did in twenty eighteen because he should
have won MVP that year.

Speaker 3 (19:22):
What is that? It once? That's the one time, wow,
one time He's played a lot because he's played in
international competition. Michael Jordan did too, but not as money
as Lebron James did. So he's played a lot of basketball.
I'm not going to complain about that. You can complain
about the flopping and you would be justified in that.
It's a joke, it's comical, it's embarrassing, it's unprofessional, it's ridiculous.

(19:52):
But when Michael Jordan comes out and criticizes load management
in the NBA. We had talked about Charles Barkley earlier,
we talked about Shaquille O'Neil, famous, some of the most
famous names the sport has ever had. Is what are
willing collectively to rip on the players who are playing
that sport today? Where else do you see that? You

(20:15):
may see NFL players complain about certain rules, quarterbacks getting
protected more than they should be. Those are legitimate, but
they don't talk about effort. Old hockey players may complain
about certain rules and regulations that have changed. They don't

(20:36):
complain about effort. There's no doubt about that. The NBA
is different in that regard, and I'm not sure how
you fix it. That genie may be let out of
the bottle. It may be too far gone for you
to try and fix it. Jeremy Raisman Riiseman rather from
Pride of Detroit is going to join us when we

(20:58):
come back. We'll talk about the Hutchinson contract extension and
why the Lions might be the gold medal franchise in
all of sports today. That's next on Exis and Bros.

Sure, Big Dan Detroit Yesterday. It's been a big season
for the Lions in a lot of different ways. Jeremy
Riseman has covered it as well as anybody, and he
joins us here in Xes In Bros. In this final

(22:36):
half hour of our program brought to you by Soaring
Eagle Casino in Resort. He of course writes, and you
can follow Detroit ONLON Detroit, Onlon Pride of Detroit. He's
with us here on Exes and Bros. Jeremy always appreciate
the time. I know you're busy. The Aiden Hutchinson deal
is a historic one for the player, for the organization.

(22:58):
What do you think it tells the fan base?

Speaker 7 (23:01):
I mean, it tells a fan base that they think
this is an organization that's here for the long term.
This isn't a, you know, let's make one run at
a super Bowl type thing. This is a let's keep
the core together for as long as we can. You know,
he becomes really the seventh core player to receive a
long term extension. All seven of those guys Jared goff,
Aman Ra Jamison, Williams, Finase, who will a hudgin, Lee, McNeil, Kirby,

(23:24):
Joseph All seven of those guys are signed through the
twenty twenty eighth season, So those seven core pieces are
going to be here for quite a long time. And
I imagine when they get to some extensions from the
twenty twenty three draft class, there might be three or
four guys that join them. So I think that the
message here is we pay our players when they are
part of the core team, and for the fans, it's

(23:46):
you know, stick around, this isn't this isn't a one
run type of team right now?

Speaker 3 (23:50):
Why is you worth it?

Speaker 7 (23:53):
I mean he changes the entire look of the defensive front.
I mean, if you just turn on the tape of
this year loan, you see offenses having to really throw two, three,
sometimes even four guys at him, which means, you know,
everyone else on the team can can eat. You know,
everyone else on that defensive line is going to have

(24:14):
their opportunities to get to the quarterback, to get to
the running back, and a Hutchinson himself still manages to
weed through all the traffic there and and make an
impact himself. So you know, a guy that makes everyone
around him better while also remaining one of the best
defensive players in football is someone that you're you're willing to,
you know, drive the brink struck over.

Speaker 3 (24:35):
To do you think the Lions have become the gold
standard in the NFL and how they draft, develop, and
then take care of their players.

Speaker 7 (24:44):
I mean, in terms of building a team from the
ground up, I don't think you could do it any
better than the Lions had in the past four years.
You know, because of everything you just said. You know,
they're they're drafting outstandingly, They're developing those players in a
way that you know, in some cases, they're not forcing
them onto the field too soon. They're they're putting them

(25:04):
out there when they're ready. They're making them earn their
spot on the team, no matter when they were drafted.
And then yeah, they're rewarding the good players. The reason
why I might hesitate to call them the gold standard
of all franchises at this point is in a lot
of ways, Brad Holmes has done the easy part. Now
I won't say what is what he's done is easy,
but it's the easier part because you know, going into

(25:25):
this year, that core seven that I'm talking about, I'm
working on a piece on this right now this year
is taking up only thirty percent of the cap space.
Next year that jumps to sixty two percent. Now they're
going to do some cap gymnastics to get that number down.
But now Brad Holmes's challenge is, Okay, we have these
expensive core players, how do we adjust the other thirty

(25:47):
to forty five, thirty to forty players on the roster
in a way that still gives us steps, that still
gives us talent beyond these core players. And that's that's
the real challenge. And there are a lot of teams
that they're doing it, that have been doing that for you. Ye,
those are kind of those you know, dynasty type teams.
The Lions obviously aren't there yet, but in terms of
building a team from the ground up, I would say,

(26:08):
you know, this is the gold standard of doing that.

Speaker 3 (26:10):
Yes, Jeremy Riseman, pride of Detroit joining is you're on
Excus and Bros. Follow him on Twitter at Detroit on
Lion here with us Soaring Eagle, Casino and Resort bringing
you this hour of Exes and Bros. Pressure your self induced?
Do you think this adds to the pressure for this season,
specifically about winning a Super.

Speaker 7 (26:32):
Bowl, I mean a little bit, right, Yeah, I mean,
like I said, this is kind of the quote unquote
easiest they'll have it in terms of just roaster management.
You know, it looks like a pretty tough year in
the NFC in general. There are a lot of really
good contenders, whether it's the Packers, the Rams, the Seahawks,
the Eagles obviously all those teams I think are good
enough to potentially win a championship this year. But again,

(26:56):
when you have those core seven players around for as
long as you plan on it, you're also always kind
of going to have a chance. And so you know,
I don't think Brad Holmes or anyone in that building
is thinking about this as as their last and best
chance necessarily, but they certainly are in a really really
good spot. The injuries haven't hit them particularly hard this year,

(27:18):
and so it does feel like this is a good
year to make that run or at least, you know,
get further than this team has ever gotten before. It's
it's not the way to championships, especially in the NFL
where it's single game elimination. You have one bad day,
one bad half, and that might be the end of
your entire season. So I don't think that. Again, like,

(27:39):
I don't think they're taking in all or nothing approach necessarily,
but yeah, I would say there's definitely at least a
little bit of extra pressure this year just because of
how tough it's going to be moving forward with the
with the salary cap management.

Speaker 3 (27:50):
Jeremy, how surprised were you with the timing of this announcement?

Speaker 7 (27:56):
I mean a little bit. It didn't surprise me that
he was the kind of the last of the extensions
that we expected this year to finish. But Brad it's
kind of just kind of done them whenever he sees fit.
You know that we saw a bunch of them done
before the draft a couple of years ago. Olee McNeil's
deal got done in the middle of the season. So

(28:16):
I think you've kind of just learned to expect the
unexpected with Brad Holmess because he just gets the deal
done when whenever it gets done, there there seems and
I think maybe that speaks to some of the the
strength of this front offices. They don't operate in a
desperate manner. They don't say, well, we need to get
this done before the season, otherwise you know, we're just
gonna wait and and hang hang this player out to

(28:38):
dry until the next offseason. They just they go about
the work and when it's done, it's done. And so
while it might be a little unconventional when we mostly
see these extensions done in the offseason, Brad has proven
that he's he doesn't care about doing them in the
middle of the season and just wants to get it
done when when all the party seems to have been happy.

Speaker 3 (28:57):
Great answer, fans reaction A little surprised by it. It was,
it's almost been underwhelming, and I'm surprised by that because
they're finally doing the right thing. Jeredy, This organization is
doing what they're supposed to do. You said, it's the
easy part. I think the hard part is identifying the talent,
being right on the talent, and then rewarding the talent

(29:19):
enough where that talent wants to stay here. They believe
in what this organization is doing. How surprised have you
been in the fans reaction that has been almost like
a shoulder shrug saying, yeah, we expected this. I'm more
concerned about what they're going to do next Tuesday by
the trade deadline.

Speaker 7 (29:37):
Yeah, it's kind of an interesting Yeah, I hadn't really
thought about it that way. I think at least my
kind of reaction was like a little bit of a
sire release, like Okay, like this isn't something that's going
to linger on, this is something that that's now done.
But I think I think part of that that blase
attitude is maybe just they have so much faith in
this front office that they were like, yeah, we knew

(29:57):
this was going to get done. We were just kind
of waiting for it to happen and so and you know,
for it to happen in the middle of the season.
Everyone's just kind of focused on this year and building
the run to championships. So I don't think it's any
disrespect to AID or Brad Holmes for getting the job done.

Speaker 3 (30:14):
I think it's just this this.

Speaker 7 (30:16):
Fan base now has a very high expectation of this
organization of doing things the right way. So when they
do things the right way, they're just like, Yeah, that
checks out.

Speaker 4 (30:24):
That's what I.

Speaker 7 (30:25):
Expected, and so let's move on to what's next. And
you know, I think it's always also exciting for fans
to get a new piece, a new you know, a
new president under the tree, rather than just retaining one
that you already have. So that's why maybe there's a
little bit more focus on on the trade deadline, But
in general, I think it's just it's just like, Okay,

(30:45):
the lines continue to.

Speaker 3 (30:46):
Do the right thing. Yeah, it's interesting, Jeremy. Not too
long ago the need for a pass rusher or an
edge rusher was vital, right, and then suddenly al Kady
Mohammad steps into the role and look at how good
he was. Tyres wheed for crying out loud, who I said,
if you think this satisfies the appetite of the fan base,

(31:09):
you're crazy. And he has one and a half sacks
against Stampa. It's unbelievable. Derek Barnes has been better, as
we know. Aiden Hutchinson is doing things that nobody else
in the NFL is doing with pressures and sacks. Where
do you think the need for this team is at
the trade deadline and what's your level of confidence that
they'll be able to address that need.

Speaker 7 (31:29):
Yeah, it's interesting because they're in this kind of weird
spot where right now they don't have all of their
pieces back, but they're kind of expecting most, if not
all of their pieces back within a month. You know,
A lot of people have pointed to cornerback, but maybe
Tary Arnold returns to the lineup this week, and DJ
Reid seems like he's just around the corner from returning.
And if you've got those guys in place.

Speaker 4 (31:49):
It seems like the cornerback room it's pretty full.

Speaker 7 (31:51):
And you just mentioned the defensive lines. Getting a lean
mcneilback has kind of changed how I think teams are
going to have to defend against the Lions the front.
At some point, They're going to get Marcus Davenport back,
maybe in a month or two here, and so it
doesn't feel like there's a long term need here pretty
much anywhere. If there's one spot that I'm kind of

(32:12):
pointing to, it's maybe offensive tackles, just because of all
the injuries that Taylor Decker Taylor Deckers is battling through
right now, and I'm not sure about the team's space
and Dan Skipper is a permanent fill in and Giovanni
Manuz is currently on ir but trading for an offensive
tackle is not an easy thing to do. There aren't
a lot of teams out there willing to trade good

(32:32):
left tackles, so I wouldn't be surprised for this to
be a pretty quiet trade deadline for the Lines, just
because I don't think there's an area of pressing need
at least where you know there's a player not coming
back from injury in the near future. You could always
use more pass rushers, you could always use more corners
because of their you know, kind of high injury rate positions.

(32:53):
But generally speaking, I think the Lines are pretty happy
with their roster right now, and so I wouldn't be
surprised if it's a it's a quiet week ahead here.

Speaker 3 (33:02):
Jeremy Riseman Pride to Detroit, joining is here on Exus
and Bros follow him on Twitter at Detroit on Lyon.
I think that would make a lot of Lions fans
a little uneasy, maybe because just because you feel, I mean,
it's almost like baseball, Jeremy, right, where you can never
have enough pitching, you can never have enough pass rushers.
And of course the sexy names of Trey Hendrickson are

(33:23):
being ballied about out there and people want that desperately.
I don't know if that's feasible. It's a rental for
nine games and playoff games, so I don't know if
that's possible. But maybe somebody else, maybe like a Jalen Phillips,
for example, would cost less. Who do you think is
next on Brad Holmes's target list to extend? If at
all people forget this team has more cap space than

(33:47):
all but three teams in the National Football League right now,
that's addressing this year. We're talking about down the road
and you educated us a little bit ago on Aiden Hutchinson,
and with the new deal, how much percentage of the
cap it's going to call us next year? Can you
tell us who you think might be next? Because there's
some really good options.

Speaker 7 (34:05):
Yeah, I mean there are a lot of good options,
just because that twenty twenty three draft class becomes eligible
for contract extensions next offseason. So you're talking about Jamir Gibbs,
You're talking about Jack Campbell, Bryan Branch, Sam Laporta, and
then there are some free agent guys that they're on
expiring deals. Do you hand an extension to Alex Anzeloni,
Amik Robertson's been playing really good? Well. I it's the

(34:29):
sense that maybe that's where the hard part of the
job comes in for someone like Brad Holmes, where a
meek is a guy that is just so perfect in
what they want to do because he can play multiple positions.
He's got absolutely the grit and mentality that they want.
He's been playing really well in man coverage. But he's
not a young player, and you have to make room

(34:50):
for guys like Jack Campbell and Jamiir Gibbs who are
staples of this team that are going to be around
for five to ten years. So I think I think
you look first to the draft class. I think you
look at like I said, I think Jamiir Gibbs and
Jack Campbell are probably priority one in two, and you
can put those in whatever order you want because this
team is obviously really relying on the run game on offense,
and Jack Campbell is basically the captain of the defense.

(35:12):
So those are the first two pillars I expect to
see extensions, and then he's got to make some tough
decisions on some of the veteran free agents because those
guys have been just important as important to the team,
and they are going to be just as important to
the team moving forward. You just might have to find
them elsewhere at a cheaper price, because that's just how
the salary caff works. When you have these core pieces

(35:33):
in place.

Speaker 3 (35:35):
What will be I agree with all that. Jamiir Gibbs
is basically like Christian McCaffrey. I mean, he's another wide receiver.
For crying out loud, I think he'd be viewed as
an elite running back in the same realm right now
as Jonathan Taylor and Christian McCaffrey if not for David Montgomery.
And I love Dave Montgomery. I want him to be
on this team. I just think there's a reason for that.

(35:55):
What will be key for this team in the second
half of the season, do you think?

Speaker 7 (36:00):
I think I think it'll lead to remain as defensively
strong as they are. I know a lot of attention
has kind of been given to the offense and the
failures on third down and maybe not sliving up to
quite as big of expectations as Ben Johnson left the offense,
But get I get a sense there's just enough talent
there that eventually they're gonna figure things out. And even
you know, even the people complaining about the offense, they

(36:22):
scored the third most amount of points for games through
seven games, So I feel like we're thank you.

Speaker 3 (36:27):
For bringing that up. That's such a good point. If
it's unbelievable.

Speaker 7 (36:30):
Yeah, But defensively, if they can continue to like hold
a team like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to nine points,
you know, the offense won't have to figure it out.
They can win games twenty to nine. They can win
game twenty three to ten if the defense can continue
to one hold mobile quarterbacks in check, because they're going
to have to face a lot of them on the

(36:51):
way to a Super Bowl, which I mean, they've been
outstanding doing that so far. That continues, I'm gonna have
a lot of faith in this team going far. And
then we have to figure out exactly what's going on
in the secondary too, because what happened in that Bucks
game was with nothing short of, you know, phenomenal, and
it was with a bunch of guys that we don't
expect to be in the starting lineup once they're fully healthy,

(37:12):
and so Ken starters kind of raise the level of
play to that of new reserves and play a better
game than they did against Kansas City. Because if they can,
then you know, I don't even see a weakness necessarily
on that defense. And if that's the case, you got
a really, really good defense. You got an offense that
at its worst is scoring the third most amount of
points in the league. I think he got a pretty

(37:34):
good chance at a championship.

Speaker 3 (37:36):
All right, last one for me and I appreciate the time,
great information, great knowledge as always, Jeremy Riceman, Pride to Detroit.
Jonen is here on Exis and Bros. Who's the best
team in the NFC right now? And who's the best
team in the AFC? In your mind?

Speaker 7 (37:50):
Man, those are two great questions. And you know, during
the season, I tend to have a little bit of
tunnel vision on the lines themselves. But you know, because
they've played in so many primetime games, I have been
able to watch a lot of other games this year.
It's hard. I'll start with the AFC because it feels
like that one's the easiest. Then I never would have
expected myself to say this, you know, this year, but
the Indiana have Floss Colts are playing really good football

(38:11):
on both sides of the ball. Much like the lines.
They're built through their offensive line and it's made that
offense hut in a way that you know, they're clearly
the best offense in football. And then defense, they have
a lot of young talent there, so you know, I
think the Chiefs are are coming and they're they're going
to put up a good challenge there for the best
team in the AFC. But I think I think it

(38:31):
has to give it to the Colts right now. And
then when you talk about the NFC, obviously the Lions
are very much in that conversation. I think Chattel is
also playing really good ball right now. They've got a
really young defense, and for whatever reason, the trade of
at quarterback to be way more fruitful than than I expected.

(38:52):
I thought that was a bad move and I was very,
very wrong. And then I think you have to kind
of I mean, you always have to include the former champs.
You have to include the Eagles, and they're starting to
figure some things offensively. But I also think the Rams
are right there. I think they're really good in the trenches,
particularly on defense. So I mean, I guess I'll answer
your question to give you one. And I think I

(39:13):
think Seattle is actually playing the best football right now,
and I think the Lines are probably a very close second.
But all four of those teams, to me, are very
much in the conversation. Even though you know the Packers
are actually the team that's first in the conference. I
think they've been playing maybe the least inspiring ball of
the top four or five teams in the conference.

Speaker 3 (39:31):
Love all that man, great stuff, and we still have
We can always change our minds, but as of right now,
and it's funny how nobody's mentioned in the Buffalo bills
went early on. It was all about Buffalo and being
a fourn oh start and Josh Allen being the MVP.
It's amazing how quickly things can change in the NFL.
You give us great perspective. Jeremy, Thanks for the time, man,
have a great weekend and keep up the great work.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. ā€œFoods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,ā€ says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
