Brought to you by Heineken zero zero. Get the facts,
be drink Aware is a drinkaware dot i e. He
claims he brought the mullet back, his short shorts are
a bit too short, and he's nowhere to be found
when it's his round.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
There's why Heinegen zero zero.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
But he's our best mate, and even though he's always

Heineken zero zero.
Speaker 4 (01:00):
Listen as often as I can on NFL Network Radio,
Pat Kerwin and Jim Miller is a musk moving the chains.
It's a fantastic show and Pat Kerwin has been a
long time respected voice in the world of the National
Football League, and he's kind of enough to take some
time out of his Wednesday morning to join us here
on Exus and Bros. Pat We appreciate it very much.
What was your overall takeaway from the trade deadline day?
(01:23):
What jumped out to you?
Speaker 3 (01:25):
A couple of things in general. Number One, outside in
New England who earlier dumped on Kyla Dugger and Keon White,
almost every other team is a losing team, basically giving
up and getting draft compensations. So you just look at them.
The records of the team that did most drinks three
and five, one and seven, one and eight, two and six,
(01:47):
two and six, one and eight, two and seven, three
and six, Bye bye. And the second piece to that,
which is a warning to the players, is not a
lion problem. By the way, ten of the big trades
were by new head coaches, first year head coaches. So
what happened? They got the job, they're not winning. They
(02:09):
looked at the rosters, specifically like the Jets, and said,
I'd rather have draft picks than try to coach these
guys in the becoming winners. So they moved on j That's
got great compensation. So those two things, and I say
to players, you're gonna get coaches fired this year, and
guess what they're gonna do. They're gonna do the same
thing to you. They're gonna wait and then they're gonna
(02:29):
dump out on you. So if you want to keep
your job, try to win a few games here down
the stretch before the new head coach comes in. So
those two things jumped out of me. And then I
think the Quentin Williams trade was and I'll ask you,
was it really a reaction to losing Parsons? Was that?
I don't know that.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
I just I would ask you this, or I would
respond by saying this, it seems like an odd way
to try and rebuild the defense.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
Yeah. I got asked and Molten show about did I
think these two moves Williams and Wilson are going to
change the fortunes of the team this year? And I
would say, no, I don't think they're going to be.
There's enough, not enough impact from those two guys. One
guy was benched. By the way, if you want to
trade a player, trade him before you bench him, right
(03:20):
because the second you mention his value goes down. So
Logan Wilson three weeks ago, and they thought they were
done with Wilson. They should have traded him right then,
probably got a fifth for him. He was the captain
of the team, led him in tackles, but they were
done with him. But once you put him on the bench,
a seventh was all you're going to get. So I
don't think Quinn Williams and Wilson are going to change
(03:40):
the Ford. They'll be a little better, but I don't
think they're going to. Mark Miller asked me, do you
think they're going to become a playoff wild card team?
It's no, I don't think so. So I don't think
there's not enough there to get that done.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
I get that, And you, guys, I say this all
the time, not just with you, but but other network stations.
It's so hard to cover every team in the league.
I mean, are you get focused on so many different
moves and so many different teams and have to know
their personnel. It's really challenging. So you get asked a
lot about the Jets, you get asked a lot about
the Cowboys, And when I listen to your show, I
(04:15):
hear that quite a bit. I'm going to focus obviously
on the Detroit Lions. Was there a player who was
traded that the Lions could have or should have pursued
more vigorously that would have helped turn around some of
the more misfortunes they've had recently.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
Well, I think I do. Your team is maybe the
best team in the NFC when I get asked out
a lot, and I still hold on to de trade
as the best team. But the one guy that I
would have gone after, and maybe you did, and that's
how it got to a third round picker was Jalen Phillips. Yeah. Right,
I've been saying all year I would love to see
(04:53):
a better player opposite Hutchinson. Usually when you have a
guy like hutch and the protection is going to hutch
all the time, that the other guy should be a
ten to twelve sac guy because he singled all the time,
if he's got capable skills. I didn't think Davenport was
going to be that guy, and so I would have.
But I promise you for us to get to the
(05:14):
third round pick, considering all the sixth and seventh that
went in these trades, I think I would have made
a move there and they didn't, So that'd be the
one that I think would have helped him the most.
Speaker 4 (05:27):
Yeah, Detroit didn't doesn't have a third round pick in
twenty twenty six. They use that to move up work
with Isaac Teslaw, who they drafted out of Arkansas. They
have a first, a second, of fourth, a fifth. They
have two, sixth and two seven.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Yeah, I think, but I think that the Philadelphia picked
in the third round, it's probably going to be ninety six. Yeah.
So when you don't have a third, you give him
the fourth and the fifth. What's the fourth and what's
the fifth? I mean, you could make draft compensation if
you but they clearly didn't have the desire to do it.
Otherwise they would have, but you asked me aware, I
(06:02):
would have gone. Look, it was predominantly a defensive trading
day if you look at it that way. I did it.
At least ten of these players were defensive guys. And
the one that I think would have helped your team
is at Phillips. And if you didn't have the wherewithal
of do it, you could have put a player into it.
You know, there's lots of ways to get compensation that
equals what Philadelphia gave, which is probably picked ninety six.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
I don't disagree with that at all. Help me with this,
because this is what I get from a lot of
people when I do shows, and they don't treasure first
round picks. If you win the super Bowl or if
you get to the super Bowl, you're going to be
picking around thirty anyway. And I say Nay Wiggins was
the thirtieth pick last year. The year before it was
Nolan Smith, the year before that it was Carl Loftis
(06:46):
in Kansas City. You can get really effective and important
and starters at that thirtieth overall pick the mindset of
people who feel like you've got a quote unquote go
for it and you don't value the picks. How do
you act to something like that? Depending on the team
and depending on the general manager.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
Well, I don't think I would be going for it
more than once every few years at the very best,
because you have to be convinced that you are a
super Bowl contender and you're one player short, right, or
maybe two. But if you're more than two players short,
you're really not a super Bowl contender. Now, if you're
(07:26):
repairing an injury issue, multiple injuries in the offensive linelight
the Chargers are, you're just trying to patch up the
line to keep your quarterback up right and stay alive
in a playoff race. But if you keep playing the
game of giving away picks for players, you are going
to get into capt jail sooner or later. You absolutely
(07:50):
need a constant injection of rookie salaries to offset the
megabuck guys and keep your books in balance. You can
look at the Jets and just say they're not very good.
They're going to get these picks, which I think is great,
and that's going to help them absorb a bigger problem.
And go look at their dead money for next year.
(08:11):
They still owe the cap thirty two million per Rogers,
and I think the top four guys on the dead
pool are fifty six million dollars. Wow. So it'll be
nice to have those rookies on rookie deals where their
cap hits aren't very severe considering what the veteran dead
cap thing is. So I think that managing your cap
(08:35):
is part of being successful, and when you do it right,
you land up with a good team and a quality
depth and room to make moves. So that'll a pretty
good example of that.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
Yeah, great perspective. Pat Kerwin joining Nisier on Exs and Bros.
Fall him on Twitter at pat Kerwin Underscore NFL. He
hosts Moving the Chains with Jim Miller. He's the editorial
console in NFL Today Show, also the author Take Your
Eyes Off the Ball two point zero. When you look
at the amount of cap space Detroit had, I think
it was the fourth most right now. And you know,
(09:08):
obviously Brad Holmes is saving some of that to sign
some of his younger guys eventually, but as of right now,
they had that. You said that you think they're the
best team in the NFC. I think it's the Rams
right now. But that's when we can debate that all
we want. What makes you think Detroit is the best
considering they've probably lost to the two best teams on
their schedule so far in Kansas City and Green Bay.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
Well, Kansas City is not going to be a problem
for their advance to the NFC Championship Game. I was
at the Buffalo Kansas City game the other day and
they're starting to break down. Maybe they think getting the
rookie tackle back is going to help solve the problems,
but they couldn't block a four man front from Buffalo,
(09:54):
and Buffalo is playing without ed Oliver, so I was
much surprised. I stood right on this and watch and they
go there. They're not even having the blitz so Kandistity's
having their own issues right now. But I like your
team the best because I do think the two headed
monster in the backfield power and speed, and I know
that Gibbs got nailed picking up blitzes. I asked this
(10:17):
question yesterday. If I have Gibbs and he's not the
greatest blitz pickup guy, you know what I say, the
same thing we say about these Move tight ends. Move
them out into the slot and guess what, Someone's going
to get displaced from the pressure box, and he might
be more effective being out there as the hot receiver.
You want to blitz that Mike Backer. We'll throw hot
(10:40):
to Gibbs three yards over the line of scrimmage and
we do it all the time with tight ends. I
would do it with him, and I think more pony
backfield where he's in the set with Montgomery. I like
to see more of that. To tell you the truth,
you did take a couple offensive line injuries, so that
is an issue. I do like the Rams, but I
(11:02):
don't love the Rams, and I don't know if they're
going to win the division. Seattle is the most underrated
crowd going out right out there, So I believe you
will win your division. I don't think Green Bay is
going to do it. I would not want to play
you at home.
Speaker 4 (11:16):
What's the best division in football?
Speaker 3 (11:18):
And why I think PAFC West without thinking about it,
it's you know, the Raiders are out of it, but
the other three teams could all make the playoffs. It's
going to be a battle to the top. And I
think that you know, Denver is looking nice, no, but
I wonder how it's going to shake out. If Kansas
City doesn't repair the line, then Denver is going to
(11:39):
get a free pass from them because of their defense.
And I don't ever count out Kansas City, although as
I said earlier, I was a bit surprised that fifteen
hits on the quarterback in three sacks and they didn't
rush but four guys all the time. That would be
alarming to me. And you know what it reminded me of.
It reminded me of the two Super Bowls they lost.
(12:00):
They lost both of them because they couldn't block for
the past and that would be the problem. But I
like the division. It's three D. I don't know of
another division I really believe is three D.
Speaker 4 (12:11):
I your division, well, I was going to say the
NFC West, even though San Francisco's beat up. I think
with the Rams and as you mentioned Seattle, San Francisco
has been pretty good, that's pretty close. But I agree
with you. I think it is the AFC West. This year,
Denver's been really impressive, even in their low scoring games.
Who's been the biggest surprise for you so far? And
(12:32):
who's been the biggest disappointment.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
Well, the biggest surprise, without thinking about just reacting to
the question, that might be Carolina. I didn't really give
them much chance for success, and they are four and
one in their last five games, I think, and they're
winning oddly in the sense I think they scored thirty
eight points in their last three games yet went two
and one, so I didn't think. I thought the quarterback
(12:59):
was going to us and he's not playing great. They
don't ever throw for over to and I think they
have one game over two hundred yards all year. But
I do think they're a surprise. So I like them
as a surprise team, and my the biggest disappointment for
me right now is the Commanders. You know this is
this is a team that played in the championship game
last year. The quarterbacks all beat up. When you look
(13:22):
at him, I was at their camp two years in
a row. He's a skinny kid and he's he does
effectively run, but he also takes shots. And I thought
when they lost some of their defensive help, plus they
have guys they count on and that are older, it's
starting to show a little bit and I feel bad
for Dan Quinn and his team.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
Yeah, I agree with all that's that's really good perspective.
I thought you might say Baltimore. Baltimore has been a
little discs.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
I think they're gonna bounce right back and get in
this because Pittsburgh, you know, they won last week and
that kind of put the fire out. But when when
Baltimore won on Thursday night, I'm going, hey, if the
coach peep these guys before you know it, Ravens are
one game behind Pittsburgh, but they held them off with
a win over the Coast, so that battle is not
(14:09):
going away. And Baltimore plays Pittsburgh twice still, so by
the time they do, they should be back to full strength.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
My expectation for the Lions before the season was the
Super Bowl, and I think I'm justified in that. Why
do you think I shouldn't be or should be in
that belief?
Speaker 3 (14:26):
Well, I told you, I like your team the best
in the NFC, So I still think they can get there,
and I wouldn't count them out in that battle. But
I think the expectations are around the league are always
the same. Most fans, and I'm not calling you a fan,
but most of them say, we're going to start from
(14:48):
where we left off. Whatever we were last year is
our starting point. And I used to say to all
of them that call my show, I go listen, I
go to New England all the years. Belichick was there
the first week of camp and he is screaming the
whole time. It's not last year, it's a new year.
He's constantly was pounding in how did they recover and win?
(15:09):
So often it's a unique ability to leave the year
behind behind them. But most fans want to start from
where they left off, and I think Detroit fans said, hey,
we got real close, so now we're ready to go
over the top. I still think you are one of
those teams. I don't think you were trapped into fandom.
I just think that it's a little bit rough for
a road. But if I asked you in August, do
(15:31):
you think you're going to go seventeen and Oho, you
would have said no. Right. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (15:37):
I think the loss of Ragnow and Zeitler has been
a lot more pronounced than people originally thought. Well, so many.
Speaker 3 (15:45):
People a sequence, yeah, but it was a sequence of that.
First you let Zeitler go, then rat Frank retired. Correct.
I'll ask you if Frank retired first, you think they
would have let Zeitler.
Speaker 4 (15:58):
Go, not for nine million dollars, but you and what
you would have done probably has had Tate Ratledge play
center all training camp and every preseason to get a
little bit more used to it. That's what they would
have done, because it's a weakness right now, Pat, you
do a great job, man. I really enjoy listening to
you and Jim. Keep up the great work. Really appreciate
(16:20):
the time. Hope we can talk sometime again in the
near future. Have a great weekend you too, any time.
Speaker 3 (16:26):
Thank you?
Speaker 4 (16:26):
Okay, great stuff. Yeah, Well, Trent's right there. We appreciate it.
That's Pat Kerwin good friends with with Trent Ballely, so
we appreciate it's incredible jumping.

Yeah, he is.
