just a bit with our friend fromthe TV move, John Foresland on the
Call for Sports US say he hadthe action last night for Game one in
Dallas, net overtime win for Edmonton. Well, talk Stanley Cup playoffs,
will talk coaching candidates here on theNHL and crack inside, and we'll also
get a chance to catch up withTim O'Brien of NBC Palm Springs. He

(03:07):
is the in arena host for CoachelloValley. And learn more about what the
temperature is right now on Dan Bilesmaas a potential kracking coaching candidate. Well,
we're down to two now as faras job openings in the NHL.
Scott O'Neil earlier today promoted to headcoach for Winnipeg. He previously was associated
coach for two seasons under Rick Bonusin Winnipeg. Bonus, by the way,

(03:30):
announce his retirement. That now leavestwo job openings left for head coaches
in the NHL, that being theKraken and the San Jose Sharks, with
names still out there such as DanBilsma on the AHL side, and for
the NHL Gerar Galan, Din Evison, Todd, McClellan and Moore. We'll
see what shakes out here with twojobs open just left. All right,

(03:53):
to the phones we go. Now, let's check in, all right,
joining us now on overtime. Ourman, our myth, our legend.
You're from the TV booth, JohnForestland, Now we can say it for
King five an Amazon Prime. Heis still a busy man though. Here
in the conference final he joins us. Now, Johnny, how are you
flying around? Do you haven't afrequent flyer mileage here for a tropical vacation?

(04:15):
Yet you can never have enough. It seems like I keep reaching for
that and they keep changing the baron me. So it's an endless quest,
Michael. The final four is Dallas, It's Edmonton. The Rangers of
Florida Panthers. I mean, anywayyou slice it, riveting matchups are coming
here for the Stanley Cup Final.Johnny, what surprised you and maybe what's

(04:38):
stayed with you as far as alasting impression for these playoffs? You know,
I think what's been interesting is invirtually all the series there's been these
moments of doubt where it could bea goalie situation like Edmonton Oilers went through
in the previous round. It couldbe, you know, situation where it

(05:00):
looks like the New York Rangers aregoing to make quick quick work of Carolina,
and somehow Carolina gets back to thepoint where it looks like they're going
to extend it to a seventh game, and the Rangers have this remarkable third
period. The Boston Bruins and they'reyou know, they're amazing regaeon and their
their demons. The Florida Panthers gointo the same building that they knocked them

(05:24):
out of last year and they doit again. And the Panthers are sneaking
up on everybody as this this excellentteam they've been all season that you know,
keeps getting by by some overlooked youknow, for whatever reason. And
then there's the Dallas, who I'veseen a lot of this postseason, to
me, are the deepest, maybethe most well for the Stanley Cup.

(05:45):
And uh, you know, Peterde bor has been close, so Manys
as there as the coach of theStars and the coach of other teams in
terms of getting to the conferences fiveof the last six years. You know,
he's he finally going to be ableto lift the Stanley Cup, I
think. So it's been a veryinteresting playoff because nothing's been predicted. I
think that's the one thing. Andusually you know, there's a goalie that

(06:08):
carries a team and there's a youknow, last year was Bobroski. But
if you look at history, there'sbeen those great goalie runs where there's there's
no question who the goalie is.But some of these teams that are great,
you don't know who the goalie isgoing to be from one minute to
the next, which makes it reallyinteresting. What series is likely or you
think to go seven games? Andthey both should you know. I I'm

(06:31):
different than a lot of people.I don't get caught up in the lengths
of series and is it a greatseries? Is it not? Heck?
I covered Carolina Florida last year wasa four game series and it was terrific.
You know, the first game, the first game was like three games,
you know, So I mean inmultiple overtimes, you know, you
you approach that level. That's howThat's how close the teams are. So

(06:55):
I think they both have the potential. I'm expecting long series, you know,
with each one the West, ButI don't know. It's like saying
who's going to win? You knowthey're going to win in five. No,
they're going to win in six.You know who wins that argument?
Pick the right team. You've gotthe argument. We got certainly a great
one on our hands here. WithJohn Forestland joining us here, he'll be
covering the conference final for Sports USAon the radio side and digging here into

(07:17):
the crack and updates. There's nocoach yet, Johnny, What names make
the most sense and which ones maybe have surprise you. As far as
who's been circulating, oh boy,you know, I'm so detached from it
and I haven't talked to anybody there. I really don't know where everything is.
Of Course, I'm up to dateon the speculation and the names that

(07:41):
have been out there. And Ido know that you know Todd McClellan,
the former coach of the LA Kingsand other places in the NHL, a
very highly respected coach who's been involvedin all of these situations around the league.
As a potential guy, went toSeattle, met with the group.
He intrigues me based on his history, based on what he's been able to
do with teams, and maybe whatthe Kraken need right now. Dan Bilsma

(08:07):
continues to be a strong candidate. How can you not overlook, you know,
a guy like him when you lookat what's happened in the American Hockey
League with Coachella Valley and the factthat he has probably the most knowledge and
way above anybody else coming from theoutside in terms of internally what the Kraken
have and what's on the way upand all that. If you're looking for

(08:28):
a guy like that, and hehas a very good resume, which goes
back a long time. His laststop in the NHL with Buffalo wasn't as
great, but certainly did a wonderfuljob with the Pittsburgh Penguins. And then
there's Jay Leech, who's quietly beencirculated as a name I think the world
of Jay and I know that fora long time he was an up and

(08:50):
coming head coach and took the jobwith Seattle, did a great job for
Dave Axtall, and you know thatwould be an opportunity, a fresh faith
and some new blood in the headcoaching ranks of the NHL to go there.
But then you look around and there'sthere's others that are still out there,

(09:11):
So I don't know. I thinkI think that has to be the
right fit for Ron Francis. Andyou know, a lot, a lot
they're made of Daves and what Davedid, Dave did a good job.
You know, Dave did a goodjob for three years there and did exactly
what Ron had envisioned, was laya foundation and work with an expansion roster.

(09:33):
It's not easy, you know.Vegas has kind of destroyed the reality
of what it is for expansion teamsbased on what they did right away.
We'll see what they are moving forward, and certainly it didn't help them this
year. But I think, youknow, Ron's got to get comfortable with
whoever this is. This can't bea choice based popularity or what looks good.

(09:58):
The next step is really important.Short team this team is transitioning into
a different look, and it's goingto happen over the next two or three
seasons because the younger players are goingto take up, you know, a
larger portion of the roster than whatwe've seen. So it'll be interesting to
see which direction he goes. Ithink they need an NHL guy who has

(10:18):
experience, who's been able to pushbuttons the right way. You know,
coaching the American League and coaching theNational Hockey League are two different animals,
and sometimes you have to know howto work your roster at the top so
that it helps the bottom, andyou have to help the bottom understand that
they have a rule too, sothat they can help the top of the

(10:39):
order. So you know, that'swhat I see, Johnny about Dan Bilsma.
How much do you believe potentially adeeper playoff run could influence all of
this? Well, when you knowsomebody, right, you know, when
you know somebody, you put themin charge and you give them that amount
of response ability at the American Leaguelevel, Mic you already know, right,

(11:03):
I don't think I think if ifif Dan were to lose, or
if Dan was out, I'm notsure the opinion changes much. I don't
know if winning two more rounds orwinning the Calder Cup makes a difference.
You know, it really doesn't matter. It does matter, but it really
doesn't matter at the AHL level whathappens in terms of your success. You

(11:28):
know, one lost record. Dan'sdone a very good job developing players.
He's also been given an excellent rosterfor the American Hockey League, and the
disparity among teams is you have tobe you have to be a little bit
more up up the speed on thanthan than what meets to given the naked

(11:48):
eye. Right, That's what Imean about a guy who's been able to
to win and compete and take ateam at the NHL level. That's why
you see the recycling of names somuch. It's very easy to bring in
a fresh face, okay, Andpeople always say, well, there's never
in a lot of new blood.Well there's a reason for that. The

(12:09):
coaches that get recycled in the NHLare getting recycled because they know how to
do it. There's great coaches everywhere, as you know, there's great coaches
in junior hockey, there's great coachesin college hockey. At the ECHL level,
the American Hockey League level. Whenyou get to the NHL, the
world changes, the egos are different, The star player factor comes into play.

(12:33):
How you keep everybody happy, howyou manage your team, how you
manage your media. You know,it's a bigger job that only a few
can actually handle. So when you'rethe decision maker, you already know what
you have in Dan Bielsman. Hewouldn't be in the position he's in if
Ron didn't trust him, didn't knowwhat kind of coach he is. And

(12:54):
I've watched him from the outside,so until I see a guy on the
inside, I hold it. Ireserve a little bit of judgment, as
I did with Dave Haxtell, becauseI've only covered him. I never was
around him. So I was aroundhim for three seasons. I know in
my own opinion what I saw andhow the practices went. Now he handled
daily, daily habits and chores asa coach, I understand all of that.

(13:18):
But with Dan, what I lookat is going way back two thousand
and nine, twenty ten and throughhis Olympic run and all that with Pittsburgh.
Great stuff, right, And thenI see what happened in Buffalo,
and the only thing I wonder aboutand maybe it's you know, there's two
sides of every story. Is hehad a young Jack Icol and he had

(13:39):
a young Sam Reinhart in Buffalo andthat didn't go well. Why you know,
And so if you're good with youngplayers, that would be an objective
question that I would just throw outthere because that's going to be part of
what happens here. So I guessit's a real see for now to answer

(14:01):
the question. I don't think what, you know, winning calder Cup or
getting back to the calder Cup finalor winning the next round, it's gonna
matter. I think it's interesting thatnothing's happened since and maybe the reason for
it is they have to wait untilCoachella Valley's done. And maybe it is
Dan's job, you know, maybethat's the way this is going to roll

(14:22):
out. We'll see. What wasyour takeaway with Rod Brenda Moore reupping in
Carolina, Well, this is youknow again, I think it just reinforces
two things. Now, this isthe only place he wants to coach.
He obviously is the most iconic figurein the history of that organization, his
roots there, he didn't want toleave. It appears he would have had

(14:46):
every opportunity to go somewhere else.It appears, you know, some reports
say it's a five year extension, which if it is, it gives him
a ton of security, and that'sgood. The salary figure is not out
there. That takes while. Ifthe salaries for coaches are not public as
they are for the players, soit takes a while for people to dive
into it and see what it is. I hope he's at the higher end

(15:09):
of the NHL coaching ranks in termsof salary. That remains to be seen.
But that's his choice. He's madehis choice now. He took care
of his staff. They were givenextensions. My understanding is those extensions they
are not as long as his. That's too bad. But I just want
and I've been there, as everybodyknows. I just wonder why, you

(15:33):
know, if we were here nowwith him getting an extension finally, why
it took so long, Why therewas speculation that he would be free.
When you're that good, when you'rean upper echelon team as they've been now
for a few years. Why isit a question? You know, Why
wasn't his extension announced at the startof the season. Why wasn't it announced

(15:54):
halfway through? Why wasn't it announcedthe day after they were eliminated? Why
was it announced, you know,on a Saturday night on an ESPN television
broadcast. You know, like I, I don't understand any of that stuff
because I'm not there anymore. ButI do know he's a good man,
he's a good coach. Their team'sgoing to be different next season, He's

(16:17):
not going to have the same roster. And then we'll see where it goes
from there. But I just thinkthat he's convinced himself that this is the
only place for him would be inRaleigh, North Carolina. And that's his
choice, and he's he's earned it, and he'll live with it, and
we'll move on from here. Johnny, we could dive into a ton much

(16:40):
more here, but you got aplan to catch. I can't thank you
enough here for doing this. BeforeI let you go, did you have
a goodbye sarenaate for Eddie Eltschik untilnext ball? Well, it's interesting you
say that because you know I happento be somehow on the same series that
T and T will be covering. So even though I'm a boot down from

(17:02):
most people, okay, I'm goingto be around. As a matter of
fact, I'm having dinner with himtonight. I am not Oh I will,
and I'm not gonna. I'm notgonna can't shake this guy. So
that's just the way it is.And I told him when we're done,
when this series is over, andthey're done because ESPN ABC, as you

(17:22):
know, has a Stanley Cup Finals. So when we're done, we're done,
and I need at least a monthhiatus, and the phone's going to
get shut off. And that's theway it's going to be. I hope.
I doubt it, but I hope. Please do it. You deserve
your break, Johnny, You're agem. Not for you, though.
You can call me anytime, youcall me anything. Oh, thank you.
All. Listen, we're gonna havea coach. We're gonna have a
coach, right at some point, someone has the coach to cracket. Yes,

(17:45):
we're not going to be coached. It's not going to be me.
I know, it's not going tobe me. It's not going to be
you. It could be every well. I've always shut that that. We
we we shut that thing down abouta month ago. He claims to be
the fun guy, right, likeno one else has fun, only Everett

(18:06):
has fun, right, So noone else has fun, just Everett.
And he's gonna bring the fun backinto playing hockey. It's gonna be his
Instagram every night. He is afun loving guy. But anyway, we
kid around with him and he's agood sport. But anyway, that's uh.
We're gonna have a coach, andwe're gonna have a draft, and
we're gonna have some big hopefully somebig news roster wise this summer tradere agency.

(18:30):
However they do it, he's gotto do it so it'll be interesting.
Yes, Fitz, we love youand we're gonna get to it.
We'll do it this, we'll dothis again soon. Here with you,
my man, thanks so much, appreciate you. Okay, Mike, same
here, thank you. Tell Belly'sgoing to a long stay as far as
well being idle because they got donepretty quick with Round three of the Calder

(18:52):
Cup playoffs. And now a wait, who's going to be in this thing
for the conference final? Either it'sMilwaukee or Grand Rapids talk about firebirds.
Here with us on overtime is TimO'Brien of NBC Palm Springs He's also the
arena host for the Coachella Valley Firebirds. Tim's got a lot on his mind.
The Firebirds lineup firing up the masseseach game night off in the area,

(19:14):
posing with fans wherever he plays, whether it be PJ West, Cactus
Club, wherever, He's got timefor us here, even here for the
little guys. I would say,Tim, thanks so much, my man.
How you doing. I'm doing great. I had so much fun doing
this the last time. When youhave a pump, when I sell your
message, so I'll drop what I'mdoing for you anytime. I'm just saying,
the public demands more, Tim O'Brien, The public demands more, Tim

(19:37):
O'Brien. We are here to serveour listenership. Great here and from you.
Hey, Tim, what feels thesame with this group as far as
last year when you think about adeep run, Oh, the team camaraderie,
that locker room is extremely tight.Head coach, you know, Dan
Bilesm and his coaching staff are thesame. They set that bar extremely high.

(20:00):
They took them a little bit thisyear to find their legs after a
deep run. Right, there's nota whole lot of summer off when you
get that deep. But once thecalendar year turned over, they found themselves
playing firebird hockey again, and Ithink even down the stretch market it's like
something in points and twenty one straightgames and it was just remarkable what they
were able to do. So thisteam is battle tested, they know what

(20:22):
it takes and they are ready togo for sure. As of right now
today on May twenty fourth, thereare only three teams who are six and
one so far in the playoffs, that being this team Coachella Valley, It's
also Hershey, It's also Cleveland. How much of the West person the Hershey
bear is getting louder when it comesto a cup final rematch. Yeah,

(20:47):
I think we're watching their matchup moreso than who you would play in the
West. I think, as amatter of fact, a minute, we're
in a group chat some of thepeople in the organization, and a minute
Hershey won, it was like, all right, Hershey's in, here we
go again. And yeah, Ithink all year, all year, we
were watching them climb and standings, having their historical run. And yeah,

(21:07):
a lot of people don't necessarily wantthem. And then there's the other side
that to be the best you gotto beat the best, Right, so
Remons would be wonderful. Five pointsin six games is a solid output here
for this guy. Oftentimes we askhow much more could Shane Wright give?
But we know the playoffs are different, So let's judge the expectations for Right

(21:27):
because we all presume he's in theNHL next year. What are you seeing
so far? Tim, he's foreignaway the most noticeable player on the ice
night in a night out. Ithink he had a remarkable season. I
think being in one spot really helpedhim this year. I know a general
manager, Ron Francis and company,he thought it was very important for him
to have a home and be inone spot, one league and get his

(21:49):
feet together. And he's done justthat. You can't ask anything more.
I think it was a bit ofa slow start in that Calgary series for
the playoffs, but I think everybodydid. The twelve days off is a
lot, right. Athletes are creaturesof habit, so I don't care if
you're a rookie year a twelve yearvet. That's a long time a layoff.
And it's a shame that he wasinjured the other night because he was

(22:11):
noticeably the last two games in thatCalgary series, and in the first two
games of that Ontario series, hewas just unbelievable skate. He was three
four strides of everybody else in frontof everybody on the ice. I mean
he is He is that good. It's been a pleasure to watch him night
in and night out, and Ihope the fans here realize that years from
now, like wow, we arespoiled with him, that's for sure.

(22:33):
The scoring certainly picked up. Hesurpassed twenty goals here for this season.
And again many around here think thatit's not matter off. But when so,
I think the next question when youtalk about the future of this Ryan
Winterton is still looking for his firstgoal in the playoffs, Logan Morrison is
looking for his first goal in theplayoffs. To you, what level of
concern is this? I don't findit concertainly all just yet. I think

(22:57):
there's that's where and the depth comesin with this team. That's where the
veterans are starting to step up.And I think it was three points in
the first three games the Calgary seriesfrom the Shane Wright, Ryan Winterton,
Logan Morrison. You mentioned at thetop of this, it's a totally different
game it's tighter checking, you havea whole lot of room to move.
It's physical. I'm not too worriedyet. I think they started to show

(23:18):
a little bit. Winterton had afew assists the other night, Logan Morrison
as well a sound the score sheet. I believe he is as an assister
too, so they're slowly getting there. I'm not too concerned just yet.
If it continues for the rest ofthe postseason, then I think you might
question it. But when you've gotguys like McCormick and Plowski and Coley and
Cam Hughes onward and onward, youcan kind of hide some of these guys

(23:42):
in the lineup and not be tooconcerned about their production. Now, I'll
get to those guys here in alittle bit, because you need veteran presence
to win, especially at the minorleague level. So after Shane Wright and
Ryker Evans, let's consider these Winterton, Morrison, Villy Ottovinen or someone else
who are you thinking of as faras next in line to take a full

(24:03):
time job with Seattle Marion Student Eachis somebody that there's a lot of chatter
about him, saying that his handshaven't quite caught up to his feet.
He is extremely fast, does everythingright on the ice, gets in the
dirty areas and be physical, justa workhorse. If his hands catch up

(24:25):
to his feet in terms of speedand he get his shot going, I
wouldn't be surprised if he was onthe Kraken sooner rather than later. Tim
O'Brian is joining us here from thegolf course out in the Palm Springs area.
He's a course of NBC Palm SpringsArena hosts as well for the Kachelle
Valley Firebirds. Tim, how arewe defining the legacy that Dan Bylsma is
building in Coachella Valley through almost twoseasons. Yeah, one that whoever comes

(24:52):
in next you don't try to filltheir shoes because you're never going to be
Dan. Right. I don't knowthat there was a better hire looking back
at it, Somebody with experience togrow a program, an organization, to
bring it from the ground up inan area that hockey is extremely foreign,
A proven winner, somebody with respectof not only the players but the league.

(25:12):
He was the perfect higher. It'sonly a matter of time. I
know he loves it here, Mike. He still good, He's out of
it. I don't think it's lipservice, but I know that he has
also mentioned it has to be theright opportunity for him to go, you
know, to the next level,to get out of here. So I'd
like to see him go because Idon't know that this team is anywhere where

(25:32):
it is over the last two yearswithout him and solely him. To you,
what's getting in the way you thinkof him getting an NHL job next
season? Great question. We talkabout it often in the media room,
but not sure. I don't knowif if there's things we don't know that
circle around the league about him,we don't see it. He's gracious,

(25:52):
he's kind, he's funny, He'sthe funniest guy in the room every time
he's there. He clearly knows howto develop players. He's done heck of
a job here in two years. So I don't have an answer to that.
I don't know. Because the NHL, they recycle their coaches maybe more
than any other leads, so matterof time it has to happen. We're
seeing that right now with what's goingon at the highest level as far as

(26:15):
the thirty two teams and twenty eightof them keep moving coaches here in about
roughly two seasons or so just createabsolute chaos. As Tim O'Brien joining us
all second that as well. Myconversations with Dan Bielsma had been spectacular and
he's certainly been outspoken of embracing thedevelopment aspect of this, which you know,
the reason why we've seen Ty Cartierfit in, Ryker Evans fit in,

(26:37):
Shane Wright looking spectacular toward the endof the season. And the question
is here, well, who's nexton the veteran's side, Tim Max McCormick,
Devin Shore, Andrew Potterowski, KaleFlorey being productive, Chris Rieger getting
everything as far as time in netin these playoffs. Give me your most
valuable veteran, and who's not beingtalked about enough? Who you got?

(27:00):
Tale Fleury has been far and awaythe best defenseman he is, even thinking
he's outplayed Riker Evans quite a bit. And that's a good sign when when
you're able to do that with whatRiker was able to do this season.
And I think we still as aas a community, as a fan base,
are still falling into I don't knowthat Drieger has ever received the respect

(27:25):
that he deserved. Joey set thebar. Joey to Court set the bar
extremely high. Last year, youhave the Joey chance and they try the
Drieger chance that it just doesn't comeout the same. Throughout the arena,
he's been spectacular. He's only gettingbetter as the season has gone on,
and I just don't feel that he'she's been given the respect that he's deserved.
Well, here are these numbers.Nine to two one say percent is

(27:48):
two three, nine goals against inseven playoff games. He has played every
minute so far, and that inthe big reason why Coachella Valley is where
they're at right now. So thequestion baris who are they going to face?
