On the Brian Mudshow. Yeah, Happy Friday and joining us
(00:23):
Florida's newest Senator, Ashley Moody. Good morning, And how is
the DC Swamp treating you?
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Oh? Good morning, Thank you so much. Well, I have
just finished my first one hundred days up here in Washington,
and it has been act impact and certainly my colleagues
have been incredibly welcoming and just really really honored that
(00:51):
I am now representing Florida in the United States Senate. Certainly,
it's been an incredible experience to be able to take
everything I was working on as the Attorney General and
just hit the ground running up here. So thank you
for asking. It's been a whirlwind for sure.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Well, and I want to ask you about that. You
had pretty much made reference to you being a doer
as Attorney General, and that might be a challenge in
the most deliberative body of all in this country, which
is the United States Senate. Has it been a challenge
for you not just to be able to go out
there and do what you need, what you think needs
(01:26):
to be done, and rather having to work through the
legislative wranglings of the United States Senate?
Speaker 2 (01:33):
A great question. And you may remember I was skeptical
that you could get in here with my kind of
personality and feel as though you were moving things. And
I find that you need that kind of personality to
be productive here, and you can make changes and strides
(01:57):
and certainly influence a pin in and perspective and movement.
And I'm already seeing that. I will tell you my
staff and those that have been around here a long time,
and we spent a lot of work in you know,
pulling together an office, making sure it was up and
running quickly so we could start filing bills. And I
know you've kept up with a lot of the things
(02:18):
that we filed. Our first one to was to support
law enforcement across the nation. But I will tell you
I just passed my first one hundredth full day, and
on my one hundredth full day, I passed my first
piece of legislation out of the Senate and I can
tell you there was a kind of internal joke on
my staff that I was like, why have we not
(02:38):
passed anything off the Senate for And they said, you
do know that many people it takes years to get
that and you just hit it on your one hundred day.
And I thought, you know that that is incredible a
testament to the infectious nature of wanting to get things
done within my staff. They really buckled down helped get
(03:00):
that done. And you know, today I am headed over
to the White House and I'm hoping that we're going
to get that signed by President Trump. So that is
a wonderful way to head into Mother's Day and celebrate
my first few months here in Washington.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
That is a big deal and congratulations and yeah, I
mean it's apropos and a lot of respects as well,
because and go to the White House to meet with
somebody else who just gets things done and the historic
pace that the President has been keeping. And on that note,
the BBB, how are things going with the BBB? I
(03:35):
recently spoke with Senator Scott and he was he expressed
a little bit of cautious optimism with some skepticism attached
to it. I could tell as well. What are what
is your read about how the president's agenda is coming
together in the Senate?
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Well, I love the lingo the BBB. That's a great
way to refer I don't know that I've heard anybody
in the circles up here referring to it as that
I might have to adopt your lingo.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
I think that it is an incredible effort right now
and talk about you know, the right place, right time,
being a part of a movement. Where you are, you
can feel people, at least on the Republican side and
the Republican senators wanting to.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Dig in and make a historic try at wrangling in
this federal spending. Deliver something to the American people that
they can be proud of, you know, I just want to.
I just got here and I looked over the last
administration and they historic, historic spending, epic proportions in terms
(04:45):
of increasing our national debt, adding blow to the spending,
and Americans want at its core financial stability and physical security.
Like if we as leaders can de deliver that to them,
we will be doing what they expect every day when
they wake up that their government to do to serve
(05:06):
them as we are are just trying to govern ourselves right,
financial stability, physical security, and so what we're trying to do,
and really what President Trump has insisted on is let's
deliver on the physical security, Let's close the border, let's
increase our defense capabilities. And at the same time, let's
(05:27):
examine ways while we can deliver on the financial stability.
So what spending can we address, How can we examine
not only ensuring that we're not inflicting a major tax
increase on Americans, but that we are being good fiscal stewards.
You know, I come from Florida, and Florida we balance
our budget, we pay down our debt, we make sure
we have money for the rainy day. And that is
(05:48):
what I wanted to do. I want to do here
in Washington, be a part of spreading that type of leadership,
that type of government on behalf of the people. And
it's great to see we now have a president's taking
this incredibly seriously. I'm like the last one that wanted
to spend us into oblivion and off a cliff. And
it's great to see, you know, Senate leadership here and
(06:11):
my colleagues talking very seriously about rolling up their sleeves
and delivering that for the American people.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
Is Senator Scott, of benefit to you kind of and
making this transition and then dealing with something as big
as this budget deal and essentially all of President Trump's
legislative agenda wrapped into one big bill, obviously coming from
state government as well as governor. Is that help in
terms of perspective and kind of threadning the needle here
(06:39):
on these things?
Speaker 2 (06:40):
Right? And I'm so glad you asked that question. It
gives me an opportunity to, you know, brag on and
compliment my senior senator, Senator Rick Scott. He has been
an incredible asset and ally since I've been here in Washington.
I don't know that every and your senator when they're
(07:01):
coming in experiences that kind of partnership and you know,
friendship as they navigate the halls of the Senate for
the first time. You know, he has been there from
the moment I was sworn in and has has been
there for every every discussion as I needed to get
(07:24):
a perspective historically on maybe why things were done historically
and how we might navigate moving things forward now. Just
just an incredible resource and I'm glad you gave me
the opportunity to publicly thank him. You know, I come
at this from having been a former judge, a former
(07:45):
federal prosecutor, a business lawyer, and certainly six years as
an attorney general for the greatest state in the nation,
and as the wife of a law enforcement officer and
a mom of a school age kid, you know, with
a lot of not only work experience, but passions I've
picked up along the way, and I want to accomplish things,
and I want to do them fast, right, And so
(08:07):
we're already making strides, already making progress, and it's been
great to have someone who understands my willingness to dig
in and work and how to best utilize that approach
to really important policy at a really significant time in
our nation's history.
Speaker 1 (08:25):
So that ELL's the senior Senator, is well aware of
hurricanes and certainly National Hurricane Preparedness Week, I know you
wanted to talk a little bit about that as well.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
Yeah, I think, you know, sometimes these designated weeks come
and go and we don't really you know, get down
to people's daily lives and grab their attention as we should.
But this week May fourth through tenth is National Hurricane
Preparedness Week. Why is that important to Florida Because Florida
is the one that experiences so many of these really
(08:57):
catastrophic hurricanes, and so we want to pay attention to that.
Be prepared. Remember when we go into this hurricane season,
which is coming up very quickly, it's June first and
November thirtieth. I mean, we can have storms that occur
outside that window, but about ninety seven percent of those
storms we see in the Atlantic will occur within that
(09:17):
six month timeframe. So we want people right now while
the while the cells are stocked, while they can get
out there in a calm way, in a methodical way,
and go through their list everything that you will need.
Know that going into a storm, you're going to need
food and water and other supplies. We always recommend an
AM radio with batteries. When North Carolina got hit so hard,
(09:39):
they were out of self service and electricity for a
really long time and people could get information from that radio.
So I always recommend that go out now, do it
now before the season starts. Being prepared. We know that
being prepared can save live and protect property. Preserve that
property so that you're not facing such a catastrophic event.
(10:03):
Dealing with the aftermath and a property damage. Also an
insurance check up, making sure your insurance is covering what
you expected to cover. I can't tell you how many
times people thought their policy covered flooding and it did not,
and it was just heartbreaking to see when that was
(10:23):
not part of the coverage. And so we want to
make sure that an insurance check up and people understand
their coverage.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Well, that is a great update and you know so
true too, and the heads up from Helene last year.
Just this week my place in the Carolina Mountains being
fully restored from Hurricane Helene. Community still going to take
over another year. It looks like so yeah, can things
can happen fast and in ways you don't anticipate. We
appreciate the time, the update. Happy Mother's Day and may
(10:54):
God bless thank you
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Stay safe Florida and have a great weekend, all right,
Florida's Senator Ashley Moody
