Speaker 1 (00:00):
Our thanks again to Jeff Trailor, head coach of the
UTSA Roadrunners. Great guy and and the heck of a
football coach. I know it. They're probably all hurting a
little bit down there after that loss to Texas State
last Saturday, but there's still expected to be a force
in the American Athletic Conference and we'll see how that goes.
(00:22):
Obviously the long Worns will be favored to hand them
another loss. But you know, you heard Sark yesterday talk
about this that you know you need only he showed,
you know, the highlights of the Notre Dame Northern Illinois
gang from the other day, and that was in South
(00:43):
Bend and it was one of the big biggest upsets
and quite some time in college football. So upsets and
surprises do happen, and teams have a way of circling
the wagons and kind of taking it all inside and
going back to work. So we'll see how this goes
on Saturday evening at Royal Texas Memorial Stadium. And meanwhile,
(01:06):
the Longhorns going through their preparations. Andrew mccooba at LBJ
High and transferred in from Clemson now a senior defensive
back had his first interception as a Longhorn last Saturday.
Was asked about a variety of things, including the fact
that Trey Moore is going up against this old team
(01:29):
and unless Texas were to play Clemson, saying the College
Football Playoff, that may be the only time that happens
this year, or if they were to play Arizona and
one of the Arizona transfers to do it, but probably
not gonna happen much. But he was asked what his
thoughts were about training more going up against his old
team UTSA on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
I mean I was paying attention to like he said,
like they said as guys from the seat that I
grew up with, trained with while I was in high
school in middle school. So obviously not going to keep
up with those guys to see what they do. Like
John Day, that's like it was like one of my
best friends. Obviously we keep in touch. We kept in
touched the whole time I was in Clemson. So when
he played, I mas sure I was too. And then
just watching U I called him after the game to
(02:11):
talk about the game, what he messed up on, and
he tell me, if you get to watch my game,
he kind of tell me what he's seeing. What I
messed up on just at of those things. But yeah,
I was definitely keeping up with what Texas had going
on in the guys from the scene, say the game
a point.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Up until the transfer that you talked that you would be.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
A long run.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
Nah nah, Yeah, all right, So anyway that was talking
about that keeping tabs on Texas while who Clemson's pretty
funny with the back of Fortnight.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
Here's his thoughts on Tray Moore and Tray Moore going
up against his old team uts A. But Trey wasn't
it Isn't it cool?
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Obviously was coming at the same we came in at
the same time. Uh. But Trey, you know, he he
and guy this all about his business. Uh obviously he
don't really speak much or he just he's him of
his business. But he's just he's been a good uh
obviously addition to the team. Uh how he played the
game's catley and his past dress game. So he's he's
gonna be good for us this year. And uh man,
(03:10):
he's just excited to play what's the name former team,
former team, And I'm pretty sure he gonna go out
any way.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
He pussed to do yeah, okay, the this long worn team,
uh you know is is his second collegiate team, and
it was kind of funny. It was a little bit
odd when somebody asked him, what's different about this program
than other ones you've played for? Well, if it's plural,
that means the only other one you could talk about
(03:36):
would be l b J. In addition to Clemton, they
only played for one other college, the Clemson Bought. In
terms of a comparison contrast between the programs.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
To be honest, it's a lot of similarities. I felt
like the culture here, I feel like that's it's it's
a huge thing because when I got here, I want
to I want to say, right before, right before for
count we had Winday coach Wednesday. I feel like those
times kind of you know, those times, kind of like
bonding with our teammates, getting to know our teammates. Just
(04:07):
those things I said, I kind of made a lot easier.
And as far as like culture wise, I mean, obviously
my previous school had the same thing. They had a
good coaches, stable coaches and after that's something they got
here and that's something that it shows.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
Yeah, good stuff there. I mentioned this on the post
game on Saturday, and I thought it was a real
interesting response from Quinn Ewers as well when we got
to talking about gunner Helm's performance, and as we mentioned
gunner along with Quinn, you know recipients of that Earl Campbell,
(04:45):
Tyler Rose Weekly Football honor. Helm had seven catchers for
ninety eight yards and a touchdown, the first touchdown of
the game. In factor of Texas going into the game,
it wasn't that there was anything wrong or incorrect or
(05:06):
negligent or whatever negative said about gunner Helm. It's just
that there was so much attention focused on Colston Lovelan
the Michigan tied end. Now he had some megatches. He
also had a fumble in the game as well and
had a drop in the game. But he was active
in the game. But there is no question that he
(05:31):
was outplayed by gunner Helm and quin You were said
that he said he's one of my best friends, and
I could tell it was kind of a challenge to him.
So I found that interesting. Meanwhile, on the opposite side, Loveland,
who came in with all the accolades by and large
for the balance of the game, for a big part
(05:52):
of the game, was held in check by that long
warn secondary and Andrew McCoo was asked about that, about
shutting down or at least really limiting Colston Lovelin.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
Like I said before, we get the best look from
my offense. Obviously, I believe we got the best offense
in the country. So going against those guys kind of
missed the job easier on Saturday when we played. But
as far as coaching, Uh, he a great, great player,
good player. Uh, you know, he do good. He catched
the ball pretty good after uh and then good after
the catch. So it was I knew we were gonna
(06:23):
have a test coming in and uh, and I felt
like we had a good game plan when we game planned,
and I felt like everything that we said what was
gonna do, we did. But as far as you know,
as far as Gunner and him, I feel like we
got to we got to go look we needed in
practice that made everything easy on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
Yeah, that's a good point as well, seeing that the
look to get for the tight end position as well.
All right, So mccooba came in with some accolades. Clearly
it had started at Clemson, a big part of that
program there, So did he feel like he needed to
prove anything this season for the lorng Warns.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
And I didn't feel like I need to prove myself.
Obviously my teammates seeing me through the spring and obviously
fuck camp, they didn't know what I can do. Me
personally after I didn't have nothing to prove because I
know myself.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
I know what I can do.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
So it was just me going out they just doing
what I do best. I'm pretty sure if people haven't
seen what I can do, people see me at my best.
So I was just going out there just playing.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
Ball, all right. So there was that, but there can
be no denying that. Certainly, you would expect his family
to be excited when they learned he was coming back home.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
It was excited. It was excited, especially my mom just
being fifteen hours away. Shot, I'm got to catch two
planes to come watch me anymore, or book any flights
so she could just drive fifteen minutes down the street
and come and watch me play. But my mom was
definitely excited. My siblings decided too. But my whole yeah,
my whole fan was excited to have me home.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
Yeah, all right, so they're excited to have him home.
He's a starter, he's a contributor, and that would also
mean that he's got to be buttoned up against a
very talented group of receivers. Even though the long words,
of course lost Xavier Worthy and Ada Ni Mitchell and
JT Sanders to the NFL Draft, and looking at Isaiah
(08:07):
Bond and Matthew Golden and mary Nay Black, those guys
Insilas Bolden, they've got a big receiving cores, a talented
receiving corps. And mccooba was asked, how difficult is it
to defend the wide outs for UT when he's on
the corner in practice.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
I mean it's a challenge obviously. Uh, we played a game,
we played the sport the football, where speed is kind
of like the one of the main factors. So just
going to going up against those guys Bond, Johntay gold
and Silas, like I said, don't do nothing but just
help us in the secondary. Uh, you know, be able
to adjust to the game and whoever we're playing. Obviously
(08:47):
we've seen it look throughout the whole week from those
guys that are playing at elite level right now. So
it's just like I said, that just kind of makes
everything a lot easier for us as the secondary to
any look we get, we've seen it before.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
So there it is some thoughts from Andrew mccoobah, good
to hear from him. A guy I would say that
it's safe to say a guy of whom much is
expected coming into the season, because even though he's coming
through the portal as a transfer like several of those
(09:21):
long worn guys are, because he was a starter at Clemson,
was certainly expected to be one of those guys who
would contribute and contribute right out of the gate. And
if he contributes right out of the gate, then clearly
that means that secondary is really in tip top shape
(09:43):
because of guys like Jaaney Baron, Derek Williams had an interception,
several different guys step up and made place. Manny Muhammad
tipped the pass the one that was intercepted by macouba,
so everybody was kind of getting into the act off
of that. And so there it is, good stuff from
(10:07):
Andrew mccouba. All right, coming up, We've got some other
topics to get to and we'll continue here on this
Tuesday afternoon here on sports Radio AM thirteen under the
zone of the iHeartRadio app
