(00:03):
He's a Texas legend, a Hallof Fame broadcaster, the voice of the
Texas Longhorns, and your host ofthe Craigway Show. Here he is now
Craig Way. We're glad to beback with you this afternoon, glad to
(00:30):
be back from vacation, and sowe moved forward. Yes, I think
it's Craig Wait. I'm still aliveand well. Glad to have you with
us please, as always been joinedthe producer Cameron Dallas partner. That's what
it says on the birth certificate thatthe stands for Dallas. And while he
is still you know, proclaiming tofollow the team, he says he won't
(00:56):
watch them. We'll see how thatall works. I did find out I
did this row. How are you, by the way, delighted to have
you back in studio, Craig,it's going to be back. I hope
your vacation went well. It did. I'll throw on a few details without
boring too many people here in amoment, I did find out that my
oldest son as much in the sameboat as you when it comes to the
Dallas Cowboys, he says, unlikeyou said, you'll root for them,
(01:19):
but not watch them. He says, he'll watch them, but probably not
root for them because he's expecting theworst to happen. So it's similar.
It's similar type thing. So that'shis take on it anyway, that it
would be something like that. SoI saw what this franchise is doing to
it, what it's doing to people. See what's happening here? Well,
and then I saw somebody posted somethingon Facebook last night, and this was
(01:42):
kind of distressing, disappointing. Hewas a guy who had grown up a
Cowboys fan, and he had Ithink nephews and little kids with him or
whatever. And they were in Friscoand they decided to roll by. They
want to take a picture, anda security guy was like, now,
you can't be here private property. So we just want to take a couple
(02:04):
of pictures with Super Bowl trophy. He says, well, in order to
do that, you need to takethe tour. Oh okay, how much
is that? Forty dollars for theshort tour? I no things? He
said, Why do I keep rootingfor this team? So it happens Jerry
finds the way they get a nickelout of everything that's true. It's true.
So the more things change the morethey remained the same. But it
(02:28):
is good to be back. Idid spend a couple of weeks up in
the state of North Carolina. Hada great time at the National Sports Media
Association's awards banquet. That was reallycool, not just receiving the award for
Texas Sportscast of the Year. Yes, don't get me wrong, that was
cool and I enjoyed it. Itwas very fun and thanks to Dave Gordon
(02:51):
in the NSMA and all of that. But probably as much fun as that
was was listening to the speeches thosewho went into their Hall of Fame,
including Joe Buck, including Tim McCarry, the late Tim McCarver, Jason Stark
who always liked the baseball writer foryears Philadelphia Inquired, then Sporting News and
(03:16):
then at ESPN, and then amore recent acclaim from The Atlantic, Andrea
Kramer, who got the CEO withtheir covers the NFL. She went into
the hall as well, So thatwas that was really cool. And just
guys sent around commiserating at the quoteunquote after party. This was the part
(03:37):
I said was probably about as muchfun as anything, and just sitting sitting
around a little table with Paul Keels, the voice of the Ohio State buck
Eyes, and Sean Kelly, thevoice of the Florida Gators, and we
were talking about some sec stuff, and of course he still does some ESPN
radio work. And Chris Stewart whois now the new play by play voice
(03:58):
for Alabama Crimsonside football in addition tohis basketball duties, and he had been
filling in while Eli Gold was outinjured, I mean out ill, and
now he is taking over those playby play duties for football full time.
He was there, and so therewere a lot of Chuck Cooperstein a voice
of the Dallas Mavericks, and andalso got a chance to participate in what
(04:21):
was called a feedback panel where youngbroadcasters much like yourself, Cam, but
some considerably younger, even a fewyears younger, fresh out of college or
about to be out of college, would come to several of us sitting in
a studento sitting in a room likea regular meeting room. Chris Marlow,
(04:43):
the play by play voice of theDenver Nuggets their their TV play by playbook.
Kenny Albert, who was the NewYork Sportscaster of the Year because of
his work doing New York Rangers duringthe year. But Churse. We know
Kenny Albert also from Fox, andwe know him with his work he does
for Fox with Major League Baseball NFLand a NHL on TNT called the Stanley
(05:04):
Cup Finals. He was in theroom and a delightful gentleman by the name
of Everett fits You, the radiovoice of the Seattle Kraken and the first
African American play by play voice inNHL history. Great guy and anyway,
so the five of us were sittingin a room and they opened up the
(05:26):
doors, and fresh off of alecture given by Kevin Harlan, who got
the national sportscaster of the airward, these young people would come in, some
a little older. Some were youngprofessionals kind of like yourself in the industry.
Others were just finishing college, rightout of college, and they walk
up to you and sit down insideyou with the laptop and hit the click
(05:49):
and say, got to show youmy stuff, and you say yeah.
You'd sit there and they would showyou their demo reel and then we would
give feedback, we'd give critique. So I was pleased and honor to be
asked to serve on that and todo that. And I will say this,
Uh, there's some really really talentedpeople coming up, you know what,
you know, a lot of thepeople that you've seen around your age.
(06:11):
And the thing that impressed me themost is that these people had some
really slick looking demo reels. Wewere talking, Kenny Albert and I were
talking about how we just you know, put together the best thing we could
on a cassette table. We weresending things out, sending something out back
in the day, and these wereThere was a young lady who was graduated
(06:32):
from Washington and Lee which is whereKaylee Hartung went to school as well,
and had a very impressive demo reel, and so did a young guy who
just started out in Fort Wayne,Indiana and an affiliate up there. But
there was just a lot of peoplethat brought their stuff around and they would
they were asking for feedback, youknow, can you watch tell me what
I'm Things that you like, thingsthat you don't like, stuff like that.
(06:56):
So it was a lot of funand enjoyed that. And then of
course obviously that was three and ahalf hours from the beach, so we
wrapped this in and around the annualtime we spend along the North Carolina coast,
and so Lynn and I were downthere, and at various times all
four of my kids came through fora few days here and there. Andy
(07:19):
was in for I think five days. Julie Amazon on the front end for
a few days. She's been overin Europe. She's been in Greece,
and she's on her way to Irelandright now. Hayley and Tyler, my
son in law, and my fourgrandkids that came through. I took my
oldest grandson to definitely a tourist trapexperience called Alligator Adventure in Myrtle Beach.
(07:44):
But he really enjoyed that because he'sin the reptiles and dinosaurs and all that
kind of stuff. And we gotto see Bob, who was the alligator
born without a tale called Bob it'sa rare alligator, and another alligator capet
and and they had them things likethat. So we did that with that,
and you know, the usual beatstuff, play on the beach,
(08:05):
played a little golf poorly. Imight add that I pard one hole out
of my entire round and considered thata win. It's the eighteenth hole,
got it have made about a fifteenfoot or hey, yeah, that's the
way you get what keeps you comingback, right exactly, said all that,
I ate some some seafood and somePortan barbecue and all of that other
(08:28):
kind of stuff. So yeah,it was it was a lot of fun.
It's a good, good annual vacationand good way to uh you know,
bounce back from all of that.So anyway, on the program this
afternoon, well we've got some collegefootball, some college basketball notes to go.
I was on the with you guys, was on the day that Jim
(08:52):
Swasnagle was introduced as the new headbaseball coach at the University of Texas.
I'll have some more thoughts on that. Uh. Gene Watson from the Chicago
White Sox organization will join us inthe four o'clock hour as well to get
us caught up in Major League Baseball. The All Star rosters are out now,
so there's a lot more to getto and we will do all of
that. Happy to have you withus here on a Monday afternoon here on
