Speaker 1 (00:00):
And that means we're pleased to be joined by the
managing editor of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, with whom
I will join alongside Aaron Hartigan. Since I'm back in
the studio with them on Friday night for High School
Scoreboard Live. They did just fine without me. Greg Tepper's

(00:20):
with us. How you doing today, Tip.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Well, I'm all right, but I would I would maybe
question whether or not we did all right without you.
We missed you desperately. I will say this is this
one hundred percent true. We got done with the show,
We got done with High School Scoreboard Live, and Aaron
Hartigan and I were walking out and I turn around,
I go, Man, every time Craig's gone, I feel like
I talk so much. I feel like everybody's watching that

(00:45):
show and thinking, God, temper shut up. But like, you
know that that's the thing that when it's ninety minutes
of talking, divide among three people, you know moves pretty
pretty well. My throat, you know, my voice is okay
at the end of it. But divided by two and
oh man, you're really letting it rip.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Yeah, but you're supposed to. If there's only two of you,
you have to do the talk, so I got to talk, right, true?
Oh yeah, I mean listen, listen. I get paid to
talk about football. I'm not getting paid to dig ditches,
so like it all could be a lot worse.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Let's put it that one.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
That's true, all right, So let me ask you this.
Since you get paid to talk about football and write
about football, let me start at the collegiate level. Get
your review of last weekend. Obviously, folks are down here
kind of feeling themselves a little bit and pretty excited
about what's going on on the forty acres as well.

(01:41):
Before I moved to a couple other Kyle, we can
clear the deck on this. First of all, what was
the reaction in the office at DCTF for the proceedings
at the Big House last Saturday? Well, i'll tell you.
You know, your friend and mine, Mike Craven was there
as well. He was in the press box there at
the Big House and enjoying himself there, and he about

(02:03):
I want to say, I think it was right after
Texas's first touchdown he got into our company slack and
he said, Texas is about to win this game by
twenty plus. Like early on it was the vibe was
this is this is going to be one only traffic,
and it was simply because of the way that it
was happening. Wasn't the score, but it was the way

(02:23):
that Texas was dominating, kind of the point of attack
and kind of just playing playing bullyball with with a
team that kind of a program that kind of prides
themselves on being bullies.

Speaker 3 (02:32):
I thought, you know, the big everyone.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
I know, people are talking about quinn ewers, and people
are talking about the receivers and the defense, and all
of them deserve their flowers. But the thing that we
haven't been able to shut up about here in the
office is the offensive line, which was uh masterful, absolutely
masterful in that game. I know Michigan is not what
they used to be maybe last year, but like, don't

(02:57):
don't you know, uh you know, don't don't you know
throw throw dirt on them and they're gonna be They're
still a Big Ten title contender. And Texas went in
there and just whipped them up front, and that was
really really impressive. So I think I think Mike Crane
wrote a story about like I think it was called
said to your college football you have a Texas problem,
and and I think that he's right because right now,

(03:19):
I think everything the Longhorns wanted to accomplish up there
in the Big House, I think that they came home
with a list full of check marks.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
Okay, let me uh, let me get your thoughts on
h on a couple of other games and other other
teams as well.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
What what to you? Who has the most to gain?

Speaker 1 (03:39):
I think I know the answer to this, but I'm
gonna I'm gonna ask you who has the most to
gain and who has the most to lose? From these
two matchups this week, Baylor hosting Air Force North Texas
at Texas Tech. I think I think they're both in

(04:01):
the same game, and I think it's the one going
on in Lubbock with North Texas and Tech. Now, Baylor,
I think does need to go out there and prove
that they are that things are different, because right now
they have like a bludgeoning of an FCS team and
then like a kind of oh no, here we go again.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Lost to Utah. Yeah, in that weird non conference game
with a conference opponent. But the but I think that
you know, they'll if they can go out there and
take care of business. I think that that would really
kind of steady the ship there, But that game suddenly
North Texas at Tech is looking really really important for
both teams.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
For Eric Morris, a return to his old.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
Stopping grounds and an opportunity to go out there and
kind of make a statement for himself and for a
program that that could really use a big splashy win.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
North Texas a lot to gain by going to Lubbock.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
On the other hand, for Joey McGuire and the Texas
Tech Red Raiders.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
Not not only I think we are.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
Now at the point where in a game like this,
style points are going to matter. Because they got zero
style points from their season opener against Appling Christian. Obviously
they went up to Wazoo and got skunked. They need
to show that something is changing or else it could
be a very long season on the South Plains. And
I think that we are already at the point now

(05:23):
where the blue may be off the rows for Texas
Tech under Joey maguire. That all those good vibes that
you know that first year had, and then the second year,
you know, hey, they managed a ball, they rallied. You
know that they showed some some gusto these first two
games of the season. I think obviously they're one in one.
It could have gone worse, but like you know, barring

(05:45):
a winless start, this is about as poor as you
can expect. So I think there's a lot of pressure
for not just Texas Tech to go out there and win,
but to play well and to kind of go out
there and bury them. So I think that this is
there's a lot on the line. I think in Lubbock
this weekend.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Is there a lot on the line in Gainesville with
A and M playing at Florida with two teams trying
to figure themselves out.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
I mean A and M.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
We don't learn much from a game with McNeese like that.
And then the disappointment of the loss of Notre Dame,
which then promptly turns around and loses its home opener
to Northern Illinois. I mean, and obviously there's no urgency
in terms of the job thing or status for Mike Kelko.
I'm just talking about the momentum of the program. Yeah,

(06:26):
I think that there is there's something that we're going
to learn. Certainly obviously an SEC opener that's important. This
is as far as SEC games are concerned, and SEC
road games are concerned.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
This Florida team.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Is probably about as manageable as you're going to get, right,
I mean, an opportunity to go into a still a
high powered environment and show that things are different.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
I think really matters for this and M team.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
I think they need to prove that they are not
just a team that can beat up on bad uh,
you know, bad defenses like they did against McNeese. I
thought Connor Wigman looked better obviously against mcneise, But we'll see.
The Other thing that I want to see is like,
now we have reason to believe that this Notre Dame
offense is kind of bad. And so my question is

(07:17):
what happens when they take on a Florida team that
say what you want about them?

Speaker 3 (07:21):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
They found that they have a quarterback and it's a
guy we're very familiar with around here, the reigning mister
Texas Football Player of the Year and DJ dj Lagway,
who was I mean already has people in in Gatorland
buzzing about what he was able to do. I think
for A and M this is important. They I think
I think they're favorite. I haven't checked the line recently,
they I think they should be favored. I think they're

(07:43):
the better team. But again, this is an opportunity I
think for Mike Elko to say this team is different,
this program is different. We're changing things around here and
and here. Here's how we're going on the road against
a team that we think we're pretty we're better than,
and we're just going to go and take care of business.
So I think there's something to be gained for A
and m certainly.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
By the way, I propos of no football in the
state of Texas. How do you feel about your alma mater?
For people who don't know, Tepper is a Jay School
graduate from the esteemed and renowned journalism school at the
University of Missouri, who's top ten rated. Tigers have steamrolled
Murray State in Buffalo to open the season.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
Oh yeah, listen, you don't just walk into Columbia Missouri
Pharoah Field, and especially if you're Murray State and Buffalo.
Although I will say this, they haven't given up a point,
which is fun. We'll find out a lot more this week.
They take on Boston College, which is suddenly ranked Boston College,

(08:41):
So I don't know, they're looking okay.

Speaker 3 (08:42):
I think I remains to be seen incomplete right now.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
They've they've got all the tools, but I am a
jaded enough Missouilum to wait for more data before jumping
to some sort of conduity.

Speaker 3 (08:57):
Here's what I'm looking forward to.

Speaker 1 (08:59):
I think think they went over Boston College and then
what we're going to see is an SEC opener in
Colombia between an unbeaten Missouri and an undefeated Vanderbilt who
should go to three and oh with a road win
at Georgia.

Speaker 3 (09:14):
State this week. Who had that on the fingo SEC football.

Speaker 2 (09:19):
When you think SEC football, you think Vanderbilt at Missouri.

Speaker 3 (09:23):
That is SEC football.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
It just means more in Columbia Tagging football with Greg
Tapper managing it our Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. All right,
let's move to high school. There was obviously going to
be a new number one team in six A after that
incredible shootout between North Crowley and Denesota, and North Crowley
won the game, they jumped two spots in the powl.

Speaker 3 (09:44):
Was there any.

Speaker 1 (09:45):
Discussion given the having them pull the Joe Montana Notre
Dame nineteen seventy eight Cotton Bowl win over Texas and
who was number one and going all the way from
number five to number one. You've got duncan Ville installed
as the number one.

Speaker 3 (10:00):
Yeah, we thought about it.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
I mean obviously that's the I mean North Crowley over
to Soto. I think it probably goes without saying. It's
the most impressive win of the year at any level
for for anybody.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
I mean what they did.

Speaker 2 (10:10):
And by the way, like you know, Claude Mathis will
probably you know, clip this and use his locker room
material material. But like they were the better team on
Friday night. It wasn't floky. I mean they went out
there and they beat up on De Soto in a
real way, and that offense looked every bit the part
of a state championship contender. We gave them some consideration

(10:31):
for number one. In the end, duncan villain Northshore didn't
do anything wrong, and I think that that they'd showed
any weakness, we would have been more inclined to North
crow or rather, uh, North Shore went all the way
to Crowley actually and played a good I think a
good Crowley team and overcame five turnovers, five interceptions from

(10:51):
their quarterback Caleb Bailey, very you know, uh, strange performance
for him to come out with a win.

Speaker 3 (10:57):
I think right now Duncan Villain.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
Northshore probably just or just based on pedigree, deserved to
be at number one.

Speaker 3 (11:02):
But but North Crowley certainly has our attention.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
And I will also say they have a big game
this week against Denton Geyer, which I don't know if
you've seen the the tweet that Ray Gates put out.
But Ray Gates, of course, the head coach at North
Crowley is a Shiner alum. So he's from a bit
of the country, if you will, And he's got a
hog trap out there saying don't don't don't fall for
the don't fall for the trap. He's got a he's

(11:25):
got a hog trap out there at the Crowley endoor
of cility to make sure his boys are are ready
for Denton Geyer this week.

Speaker 1 (11:30):
Random six A question, how do you feel about Allan?
What do you make of them right now? Off to
a two and oh start, But you know, did we
expect an awful lot?

Speaker 2 (11:39):
It's it's kind of wild to say this, but Allan
quietly to and oh that's why I'm it's just been
it's been a couple of years since they've been in
a position. But I think what Lee Wigginton has done
there is very impressive. You know, look, h their win
over Midland Legacy. I don't necessarily take a ton of
stock over although the style points were certainly really, really impressive.

(11:59):
It's a long road trip for Legacy, and I think
also think that the Little Southwest Conference as.

Speaker 3 (12:03):
A whole is down.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
But last week against Cedar Hill, I mean that was
a Cedar Hill team that was flying high coming into
that game. And remember they got done really pummeling mid
Lothian and they just took them to the woodshed. Now
they get into district play and their first two district
games are going to be against Prosper Rock Hill and
playing on the kiddie I mean, look, their their schedule.
The district lightened up a little bit for them. They

(12:25):
are right now probably going to walk into their game
in week week nine against Prosper undefeated. They have looked
really good, I think on both sides of the ball.
Their defense especially, I think it's taken a real step.
That's been a bit of a problem for them recently.
But I think I think there's reason to buy in
on Allen and think that they are on the way

(12:46):
back to that kind of statewide contention.

Speaker 1 (12:48):
You mentioned the long road trip for Midland Legacy. The
return thing for them is like Travis going out to
Midland to play Legacy this week.

Speaker 3 (12:56):
And they won.

Speaker 1 (12:58):
The big news really that came out of that was
land in Lock. Rock Walls starting quarterback has done for
the year. And that's why I'm going to go against
Jerry Forrest on the computer who has them favored by
one against the fighting farmers of Lewisville.

Speaker 3 (13:09):
I think Lewisville will take that game.

Speaker 1 (13:11):
But uh, you know Lake Travis also the Quiet two
and oh and trying to move forward. They won that
shootout with rock Wall and now they go way out west.

Speaker 3 (13:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:21):
I think it was a really nice win, gutty win
over a rock ball team that that obviously was started
limping there in the first half, but you know, to
come out with that win and win that kind of
uh that shootout, I thought was impressive. Their offense has
been really really good for the first two weeks and
I expect nothing less than them to continue that. I
think that Chasten Dita has shown that kind of growth

(13:42):
and I think that again, you know, one of the
things and I know for people down here down in
the Austin area, that's going to be you know, fada
complete and and I'm like a burner record, but their
running game with Van Hopping has been really really good,
really good, and it makes it so that they don't
ask their quarterback to go out there and single handedly
win a game for them. And I thought that they
should great balance offensively, they should be able to if

(14:04):
they can handle the road trip, which I think they
should be able to, they'll be able to.

Speaker 3 (14:07):
I think they'll move to and O.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
I mean they've already traveled to the DFW Metropleitan beating
Arlans Martin. I don't think that they're going to have
a problem with that. I think that they should be
favored going out there, long road trip, but I think
they'll take care of business in Midland all right.

Speaker 1 (14:20):
Each week when I'm on your show, when you're on
my show, we each toss three games at one another
and say, okay, you can only transport to one. Ear's
when I got a little different twist on this week.
The three games I'm going to toss at you all
involve schools from the Greater Austin area. In fact, all
three games are in the Greater Austin area.

Speaker 2 (14:40):
So if you could be an excellent week in Austin,
by the way, excellent, excellent week of games in Austin.
So if you could do be at any of these
three games Westlake, A, Task Casita, A and M consolidated
at Weiss, which will be called on Texan Live. By
now other than the producer of this program, Cameron Parker

(15:01):
or LBJ Wimberly, where are you going with this? Rudin,
very rude, because those are those are three of the
top twenty games in the state this week, really really good.

Speaker 3 (15:14):
It's a great week in Austin.

Speaker 2 (15:17):
I know Matt Stepp would say Wimberley LBJ, I'm really
interested in Wimberley LBJ. Cody Stover has of course been great,
but but I think Austin LBJ has been very quietly
uh you know, uh, you know on the rise and
dropping out of four A is going to be it's
going to be interesting for them.

Speaker 3 (15:32):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (15:32):
A task seat to Westlake's got that kind of name
value obviously, and a task seat of uh uh you know,
both of them really coming off of nice wins, but
A tasks he especially beating Katie last week, and and
I want to see the I mean, the real matchup there,
the Westlake defense going up against this a task ta
to office which has.

Speaker 3 (15:50):
Been really, really good all year long.

Speaker 2 (15:52):
But I'm gonna go with I'm glad the Cameron finally
figured out his scheduling so we could call a game
like this and in consolidated. For if anything, for I'll
give it two reasons. One fascinated to see the quarterback
match up here, Jackson Shad, the freshman quarterback for Weiss

(16:13):
up against the like nineteen year senior starting quarterback for
Aim Cantalliday Will Harget.

Speaker 3 (16:18):
That's fascinating.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
The other thing is this is a district game. This
is a district opener, and in that district, the loser
of this game could be staring third place and a
road playoff game in the first round in the face
because they're both going to deal with the college station
at some point. The stakes, I think the stakes are
what make aem contolidated and Weiss the pick here. I

(16:41):
think this game is going to be fabulous there at
the field, and I will be locked into mister Parker's call,
so you know I'll be taking notes.

Speaker 3 (16:48):
I'll text you notes during the game.

Speaker 1 (16:49):
You want to see all five feet ten inches and
one hundred and sixty one pounds of fourteen year old
Jackson Shad. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (16:58):
This this basically middle schooler who's been out there. But
I'll tell you what the biggest thing about him, Jackson
Chad taking care of the football. You can win as
long as you take care of the football. And he
has been really, really sharp to start the year. So
I'm excited see what how he does against Console.

Speaker 1 (17:13):
A bonus better outside the Austin area game to see
Brownwood glen Rose, South oak Cliff, Longview.

Speaker 3 (17:22):
Brownwood glen Rose.

Speaker 2 (17:23):
I feel like I know about South oak Cliff just
because like they're gonna play another six A team and
they're gonna kind of get beat up, and maybe this
is probably the worst of these three six eight teams,
but that's not saying a whole lot.

Speaker 3 (17:34):
Brownwood Glen Rose is fascinating.

Speaker 2 (17:35):
Brownwood feels like this is their year and here's an
opportunity to take on a team that has again very
quietly state semifinals.

Speaker 3 (17:42):
It feels like they've reloaded on the fly.

Speaker 2 (17:43):
So Brownwood glen Rose there in the big country is
is box office stuff.

Speaker 3 (17:48):
He's great temper managing enter.

Speaker 1 (17:50):
Dave Campbell's Texas football magazine read is outstanding stuff. You
can subscribe online at Texas Football dot com and follow
him at Tepper And you catch him sitting next to
me in between me and Aaron Hartigan. I don't know
if that's for officiating purposes, but he's there on Friday
night in between the two of us on High School
Scoreboard Live where we'll be on Friday night.

Speaker 3 (18:10):
So we'll look forward to that tip.

Speaker 2 (18:12):
I'm looking forward to him to my friend and this time,
maybe you'll do a.

Speaker 3 (18:16):
Third of it talking. Okay, I'll try.

Speaker 1 (18:19):
Thanks, appreciate it, please please do Yeah, that's Greg Tepper
from Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. All right, we have
