Speaker 1 (00:02):
We're back.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
It's The Craig Way Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster
and voice of the Texas Longhearts Craig Way.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
Love dating the Olympic contest men's basketball. It's one of
those deals where every time they make a push, Serbia
has an answer. And right now Team USA is down
nine late third quarter, in fact, a minute to go
in the quarter and they're down by nine at seventy
to sixty one. They've cut it to six, but they

(00:39):
just can't seem to get over the hump right now.
They are really in a battle with Serbia right now,
and it is late in the third quarter. We'll keep
you updated on that. As I mentioned the tales from
the men's one meters hurtle final, the Americans take gold
and silver. Grand Holloway won the goal with the time
of twelve nine nine and Daniel Roberts got the silver

(01:00):
at thirteen nine and was three one thousands of a
second ahead of Rashid Broadbell of Jamaica, who got the bronze.
The women's for uner meter hurdles, as we mentioned, the
United States also took gold and silver. Sidney McLoughlin the
varone with an Olympic record and world record time of

(01:20):
fifty point three seven and a Cockrel took the silver
in that and the bronze went to fim K Bowl
of the Netherlands and again in the men's towinner meter final.
If you didn't hear about it, Noah Lyles did not
win gold. Leslie. Let's see Tobogo of Botswana won the gold.

(01:42):
Kenneth ben Nark took the silver. Lyles took the bronze,
and then it was revealed afterwards that he had tested
positive for COVID a couple of days and was still
in the was still kind of feeling the effects of it,
but said he never considered not running a race, and
he did go ahead and he ran in the race

(02:03):
and ended up finishing the bronze. Does not yet know
if he will participate in the four by one hundred
meter relay that he's supposed to be a part of.
The US continues to struggle, as we mentioned, so we've
told you about that, and we'll keep you posted on
the game right now. But they're back down fourteen again
late third quarter, seventy five.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
And one on a three pointer. That's just that is
non defensible.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
Craig boy and just by watching the Serbian bench too,
they're starting to feel it. I mean, there's still a
whole other quarter to play.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
Remember it's it's Feba quarter, so it's ten minutes, not twelve.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
Yep, yep, absolutely, So they're going to have to get
it turned to do this. And they're in the waning
seconds of the third quarter in the United States, which
in the first half trailed by as many as fifteen
now finds himself down fifteen again in the waning sets
of the third quarter. So there's they're going to have

(03:02):
to really get it in gear or it's going to
be a huge upset and they're gonna have to just
at best hope to try to win a bronze medal,
because right now he does not look good for them.
They're working for the final shot of the third quarter.
But this is a this is a team that's had
struggles throughout both defending and also knocking down shots. Kevin
Durant part of the group as well. He missed three

(03:23):
straight shots, won three in a couple of two's. Steph
Curry one of the few guys who's making shots for
Team USA, but not enough other guys are doing it
making shots for them, so Durant finally able to break
through it Kevin and knock one down. He went into
the day needing only six points to reach five hundred
all time Olympic points. He hadn't gotten there yet, So

(03:47):
they're down thirteen at the end of the third quarter
at seventy six to sixty three Serbia and the US
is really going to have to get on the stick
if they're going to rally back to advance to the
gold medal round. That would be the easily, easily the
biggest disappointment for the United States in these Olympic Games
if that were to happen, if they were to fall

(04:09):
to Serbia today in the semifinals. They've had some disappointments
yesterday in volleyball in the semifinal round, had a two
to one sets lead on Poland and were three points
away from winning it in four sets, couldn't finish it off.
Poland got it to a fifth set and then one
in that fifth set tiebreaker to force the US into

(04:33):
playing for the bronze instead of playing for the gold.
As well, we've talked about Noah Lyles. He did win
the gold in one hundred meter but comes up with
only a bronze in the two hundred meter shaker Richardson
had a couple of her team USA hopes dashed, including

(04:56):
there in the one hundred when Julian Alfred the Texas
loghorn was to beat or By the way, another long
horn has triumph today, and I want to make sure
I mentioned that it's Tera Davis Woodhull, Sir. Who won
Olympic gold in the long jump, the former long horn
doing it seven point one meters seven feet and point

(05:23):
one oho meters, the lone competitor to jump further than
seven meters, and she did so twice at seven point
oh five and seven point one to oh. It's the
second games for Davis Woodhall, and she joins Canadian Richard
Duncan is the only two long wornes to be two
time long jump Olympians. She finished sixth in Tokyo the

(05:44):
last one. But congratulations to Tara Davis Woodhull winning a
gold medal in the long jump, so it continues to
go really well for them. I mentioned major League Baseball notes.
A couple of baseball notes. One was that and there
was no real surprise that this was probably gonna happen.

(06:08):
Pedro Gaffall, their manager of the Chicago White Sox, was
fired today. They named former All Star outfit or Grady
Sizemore as the interim replacement. The White Sox at twenty
eight and eighty nine right now and on a pace
to possibly wind up with more losses than any team

(06:33):
since eighteen ninety nine, since the eighteen ninety nine Cleveland Spiders.
That could happen, if it does, if it goes on
for that, and we would move into football and talking
about the Longhorns they had practiced this morning, and of
course the long Horns having to do without CJ. Baxter,

(06:54):
who had suffered the knee injury and as a result
of that on Tuesday morning, is out for the season.
He's going to have off season knee surgery. So a
lot of the conversation at sarks media availability was about
the running back room and the guys stepping in and

(07:15):
all that, and we heard a lot for that last
hour from Sark so in his in his media availability today,
Sark was also talking about his running backs coach to
Sharre Choice and talked about his role about having the
running backs, the ones who are there healthy in the

(07:36):
running back room, ready to go yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
I think I think Coach Choice does a great job
in his room. They're they're one heartbeat in that room.
It's not individuals, it's one room. There's a standard for
which you know, he sets and we set for for
how our running backs play on our offense and on
our team. As you guys know now going into your four,
the running back is an integral part of what we
do and they possess kind of the heartbeat of the

(07:59):
team in our running style and then our ability.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
To be really versatile.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
We ask a lot of the runners, and so when
their numbers are called, I think they're all very hungry, right.
They work hard, we push them, they get a lot
of reps in practice, and so when their number is
called in game, generally whoever goes in there plays really well.
I mean, you can go back to our very first
year whenever Jonathan Brooks went in the game, it was like, man,
he's scorn another long touchdown, you know. And so go

(08:25):
back to last year when early in the season, whenever
Jaydon Blue would get in the game the b YU game,
he snapping off long runs. And so it's a hungry room.
I think coach Choyce does a great job of motivating
those guys, but yet hold them accountable to the standard
for which we want those guys to play.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
Yeah, okay, so and that means getting the youngsters ready.
You know, it's one thing, and we heard start talking
about Trey Wisner, but getting you know, Jared Gibson, getting
Christian Clark ready, those those guys. And remember what CJ.
Baxter did very very well last year, and that to

(09:00):
be able to move between the tackles, to run between
the tackles. And so Sark was asked if either of
the two newbies possess that ability.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
Both of them.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
Both of them are physical players. You know, Jeric is
a workhorse. He's very hard nosed, runner, tough. Christians got
great one cut ability, both catch the ball out of
the backfield. But when you see him in person, you
just look at their lower halves. They're they're put together,
they're very physical players, they're strong. So I'd have no
hesitation running either of those guys between the tackles.

Speaker 3 (09:31):
Okay, so we know that about that. Now back to
the rest of the offense. So yesterday there was a
lot of conversation about the leadership of the football team,
the leadership on the offensive side, and quinn Ewers name
came up a lot, obviously naturally being the quarterback of
the team. So Sark was asked, does it really fall

(09:52):
on quinn Ewers to get this team together and to
get them to be able to execute and to play
well and to p well to continue good preparation with
the coming season in the wake of this very difficult
injury news.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
Well, without question, you know, hey, knock on wood, I
hate to say this, but that's not going to be
our only injury this fall. You know, you know, it's football,
and everybody goes through it, and unfortunately we had to
go through it, you know, early on in training camp
with a good player. Other people are going to go
through it at different times throughout the year as well.
That's why we have to continue to develop the players

(10:25):
that we have. That players have to understand it might
not be about what's happening right now and where I'm
at in my phase of development, but at some point
my number is going to get called and am I
going to be ready to seize that opportunity. But at
the end of the day, you know, our leadership is
our leadership, you know, and that stuff can't waiver. Whether
it's Quinn or Kelvin or Jake on offense, those guys
are gunner to Baron Surrell or Anthony Hill or a

(10:49):
Michael Taff or Jahday Baron. On the defensive side of
the ball, We've We've got great leadership on our team,
and so I'm not asking more of them from a
leadership standpoint. I'm asking them to be who they are,
and who they are is.

Speaker 3 (11:00):
Good enough, okay. And there's been a lot of talk
about the wide receiver position, the versatility of the position.
If you know they can you know, even with the
guys who have moved on, you know, and not having
an Xavier Worthy there anymore, or an Adoni Mitchell or
Jordan Whittington, with the implants that they have now between

(11:24):
the freshmen and also coming through the portal, does it
give them the versatility that they had last year and
more of that And furthermore, does it help Sark as
a play caller to have that kind of versatility at
wide receiver?

Speaker 2 (11:39):
Well, I think the one thing that it does. You know,
you're again I'm knocking on wood down the road. If
a couple of guys getting nicked up, I know that
I've got guys that can play multiple positions for us,
first of all. Second of all, as we're going through it,
yes they are versatile, but we are still trying to
identify what they do best so that we ultimately can

(12:00):
them in position to do the things that they do
best in game with the understanding that they're not limited
to just that, that there's more to their game than
just that. And so that's the process we're in right now,
recognizing the versatility, yet identifying what they do best and
ensuring that our job as coaches is to put them
in the best position to be successful.

Speaker 3 (12:19):
All right, So there's some more from Sark. We'll hear
more from him coming up next hour. In the third
segment next hour, we have Greg Tapper, managing editor Dave
campiells Texas Football Magazine, coming on in the second segment
of next hour. Coming up in the third segment of
this hour, in other words, the next segment, we'll hear
some comments from Baron Surrell of the Long Warn Football team,

(12:40):
updating you on the men's basketball game at the Olympics.
Team USA kind of getting a shot in the arm
that it needed one three pointer went down and then
in the three pointer if I saw it correctly, Cam
Kevin Durant hit a three, and there was a foul
committed not against Kevin, but another player got knocked down.

(13:03):
The three went through, they counted the three. Team USA
got possession of the ball and then hit another three
after right, and so now it's down to five at
seventy eight to seventy three with about seven minutes to go.

Speaker 1 (13:15):
Yeah, a big run from Team USA, and you're seeing
them kind of close this game with Bron Curry and
Steph Embiad at the four and then Booker is that
this spot is gould line up. I mean, I think
Kerr should use these five guys for the last seven
minutes of this ballgame because you're gonna need Curry and
Lebron on the floor Kd as well. But it's basketball

(13:36):
is getting good. It's getting good. So if you're not
watching it right now, if you have a chance to
pull up USA on you're streaming device for TV, because
it's a really good game.

Speaker 3 (13:45):
Booker was one who was knocked down when Duran hit
the three, and then off the end bounds Booker hit
the three. So it's a five point game right now.
It's a seven minute mark when they were down fifteen
not that long ago. But it's seventy eight to seventy three.
And you do see the intensity on the part of
the guys like Lebron and some of the other guys
as well, really cranking it up right now, trying to,

(14:07):
you know, flip the script on this thing and finish
this right now. So they're down five by a score
of seventy eight to seventy three with seven minutes remaining
in the ballgame. And we'll keep you updated on that,
all right. And by the way, Serbia just hit a bucket,
so it's eighty seventy three. It's a seven point lead
for Serbia under seven minutes remaining in the game.

Speaker 1 (14:27):
We'll keep you.

Speaker 3 (14:27):
Updated on that. We'll hear from Baron Currell coming up
as well as we continue on sports Radio AM thirteen
under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
