(00:02):
Welcome back to the line change FoxSports. The Gambler. Mark Henry Jr.
Look, I can't blame him, wanted to avoid all things NBA,
mostly because the Sixers bounced together inthe second round. But our next guest,
we'll talk NBA any day of theweek, especially on days when there's
(00:27):
game on Tonight's and of course morepotential Sixers head coaching news as well.
His name is Sean Bernard. Youcan follow him on Twitter at Sean Underscore
Bernard one. He is the betterSB initial around the Gambler studios and he's
joining us right now on the GamblerHotline live from a wah Wah parking lot,
(00:51):
a very dangerous place to be,a wah Wah parking lot. So
I hope you are safe and securedin a parking spot. Sean Bernard,
Yes, absolutely safe and secure here. And uh yeah, unlike Mark Henry,
I still have that basketball itch Igotta scratch, so I am still
has the has the championship games, though, scratched your itch at all because
it seems like that. Uh andthese games have not been great. I've
(01:14):
been mostly have a couple of closegames, but mostly blowouts. In of
course, two teams that are threenow. Yeah, and I've been surprised
by that too. I did notexpect us to be looking at a Paris
three Yer games. I expected boththese series to go pretty deep, and
I thought we're pretty much as tossedup. If anything, I would have
expected these Celtics there the Heat couldbe the blowout that we were talking about,
and instead it's the opposite. Soit hasn't a surprising round to me.
(01:34):
There's been enough storylines and enough fun. Just like I'm kind of in
on this Heat team. As muchas we've hate, I've hated on them
and haven't believed in them. Everything'scooking at the right time. So there's
still a lot of fun stuff towatch, and the games, even though
they haven't been the most keep youon the edge of their seat. There's
been fun stuff to watch there is. Are we gonna see anything fun tonight?
Can we see this series end?Or does this one extend? I
(01:57):
think this extends. I just seeLebron getting swept. I do think the
Lakers have some sort of bounce back. It's been an impressive on this side
of the series. I think thishas been the Nuggets just playing their best
basketball. Everything's clicking. They're makingthe right calls, the right gage is
the right adjustments to each game.So it is a credit to the Nuggets
that are up three nothing. Idon't think the Lakers have played that bad
to overall. Obviously, they're downthree US, so it hasn't done enough.
(02:21):
But I do think that this isa night where it's going to be
a will to win Lebron James performanceand not let them get swept in this.
And I don't I don't see themcoming back in the series by any
means, but I think they'll atleast go out respectfully. Yeah, and
what ways are you looking at thisgame? Because I'm I'm I think Lebron
obviously gonna have a great game.I'm more on the Anthony Davis side of
things. I don't want to doand just subscribe to the good game,
(02:43):
bad game on and off theory forAnthony Davis so far the playoffs, like
he had a bad Game two,but games one and three or great.
I think he'll played great in Gamefour. But I'm also on Ruey Hotchmura
over thirteen and a half. Hehad one bad game, but I think
he'll bounce back. How are youplaying this game though? Are you you're
looking more on the Lakers side ofthings. I'm gonna be looking more Denver
(03:04):
here to close out the series.Just how are you looking at this game
tonight? And could potentially I thinkRuby is a great play. I do
think this is I like Lebron's numberspretty much across the board, going with
the combos I'm a big fan ofbecause of a player like Lebron finds his
way to put his best fingerprints allover the game, whether it is being
a playmaker, whether it is goingand taking it himself. We haven't seen
(03:24):
the best version of Lebron games sofar in the series, and while some
of that is his age and theversion of himself that he is at this
point, I still think he hasenough in the tank to put forward the
performance. So I like going towardspretty much each of his numbers that I
looked at earlier. I think Rubyis a good play too, because one
of the adjustments the Lakers have made, and grant they're down three nothing,
so I wouldn't say that they shouldbe patting themselves on the back again.
(03:45):
But I do think the best wayto defend Nicola Yokich is when you do
front him with another guy like RuyHashimore who's gotten some action in this role,
and allow Anthony Davis to rome andto protect the rim, because while
Yokich is phenomenal as a score improvingpeople wrong in that department, he's still
the most dangerous as a playmaker. So by having a guy patrolling the rim
and taking away those tasks lays, that's an impactful way to defend. And
(04:06):
that does extend the opportunity for Rudyto see himself on the court and have
an opportunity. And frankly, hehas not been missing much. So he's
been a huge X factor for theteam. And that's been the story of
the Lakers as they have a guythat tends to step up and do his
job. Once again they're down threenothing. So hasn't been that case in
this series, but Rudy has beenthat main guy and the first guy that
I believe in that techn order.Yeah, what has been the most impressive
(04:28):
thing so far for the three gamesfor Denver and what could you potentially take
from that and apply it to theNBA Finals when they eventually get there.
I guess for me, it's Nicolayokich Is. We obviously know this guy's
a two time MVP, been oneof the best in the league for several
years now, but I've always beenskeptical about the way it can translate to
the postseason. Can he get singledout defensively? I think they've done a
(04:49):
good job covering up for him inthose areas, and he's just so intelligent
with the ball. He's just pickinga part of this defense, finding the
best opportunity and making the right play, and it should translate. We've really
seen some ridiculous games from them. And don't sleep on Jamal Murray either.
This is a guy who should bementioned in the same breath of a lot
of the top guards in the NBA. As great as Yoka is, Jamal
(05:10):
Murray is the closer for the team, and I mean, like Game two,
we saw him absolutely catch buyer. He has that in the tank that
can come out at any moment. So the Nuggets are a real deal,
complete team. They have the NBAsuperstars that you look for, and I
think that's the main message from thisseries is that this team is here,
They're ready, they're not playing around, and they have all their eyes on
the Championship. So shout out toYoki and Jamal Murray for really proven that
(05:30):
in this one. That voice you'rehearing is Sean Bernard. You can follow
him at Sean underscore Bernard one onTwitter. Want to move over to the
Eastern Conference Finals. And just apretty simple question to start here. I
don't know how simple the answer willbe, but what is going wrong?
What went wrong with Boston? Yeah, the wheels have fallen off in Boston.
I mean, maybe some maybe weshould have read into this tum when
(05:54):
you know the Sixers are pushing theCeltics two seven games, But frankly,
I think it just looks like theHeat ARNI the moment that everyone's playing to
the best sir ability. And asmuch as we laugh at the concepts of
like Heat culture having guys that youcan plug and play like, it's everything
is clicking for this Heat team. Some of it is Jimmy Butler being the
best player on the court, whichJason Tatum and Jaln Brown should be taking
(06:15):
personally. Neither of them have playedtheir best basketball. Jaylen Brown specifically has
been pretty brutal in this series, and this is coming off the series which
he played pretty well overall, sohe has more in the tank. So
the Celtics have not played well.It feels like like the Celtics just don't
have the mental ability to withstand thisheat, pressure and the heat. Obviously
are never going to be a teamthat rolls over to everyone. They have
guys that are hitting big shots. They're shooting a super high percentage from three
(06:39):
Their percentage from the field and threepoint it is significantly higher than regular season
the three points up four percentage points, which is a notable margin when we're
talking about thirty four to thirty eightpercent. So they heat. Everything's clicking
at the right time. The Celticsare not finding ways to combat this,
and Eric Bolster has absolutely coaching circlesaround Joe Mazzula. So just about everything
that can be going wrong is goingwrong for the Celtics right now. Yeah,
(07:00):
it is going wrong. And isthat going to lead to any repercussions
in the off season, because look, I don't think either the Lakers or
Boston are going to come back winthese series. I think it's pretty much
permanent at this point that it's goingto be Miami and Denver. So looking
ahead for Boston, what are therepercussions of this series in the off season.
(07:20):
Yeah, I think there's definitely goingto be some for starters. Joe
Missoula, while he has been guaranteedthe head coaching job and had the interim
tag removed this year, this hasbeen the type of series that kind of
change is bad, So I wouldnot be surprised if they begin to look
elsewhere for the head coaching. InMissoula's defense, I think a lot of
this has not been purely his fault, but you know, the blame has
(07:41):
the fall somewhere. I respect whathe's trying to do by taking up and
taking responsibility, saying how it's allon his fault for not having a team
ready, that kind of thing, but that's just not truly the case.
And if that is the case, that's also a problem. So he's not
in a good spot either way there. I also think the Jaylen Brown and
Jason Tatum combo is something to continueto keep an eye on both of them,
making an all NBA teams points towardthem, saying with the subjects they
(08:03):
both have a ton of financial intentiveto sign the SuperMac deal with Boston and
say, but I think Dalen Brownhas a little too much outfit in him
to continue to be the second fiddlethere. And also I think that for
both of them, they might bestarting to think about, like this is
now several playoffs in a row wherewe've kind of hit our ceiling, is
are they too similar as players tobring out the best in each other?
(08:24):
Because there is a little overlap intheir skills, that's what they're best at,
what brings out the best in them. So I wouldn't be surprised if
if that relationship continues to be straineda little bit. And I don't think
it's this offseason that that comes, but I do think down the line that
that will be the case. Forthis off season specifically, I do think
Joe Mazzola is going to have totalk his way out of losing his job,
and I think that's probably the whatfalls down. Yeah, and look,
(08:46):
there is another side to this.Miami is just playing extremely well and
a lot of credit nets to begiven to them. How good is the
supporting cast around Jimmy Butler, BecauseJimmy Butler gets all the credit and rightfully
so, he's the one of thebest playoff performers so far in the playoffs.
This season, and he's a largepark and the reason why they're here.
(09:09):
But as we saw in Game three, there are guys playing extremely well.
Vincent Streuss, Duncan Robinson, CalebMartin, bam Adebayo has been fantastic.
What is how good is that supportingcast and how tested is that going
to be against the team Like Denver, I think it's a lot better than
anybody has given them credit for.I mean bam Adebayo, who I haven't
(09:30):
been been the biggest Bam guy.I think this is the best best buy
I've ever seen him play. Theaggression that he's showing the two way ability,
the way he's pushing the ball, putting it on the floor, taking
it himself, and his playmaking hastaken a significant step forward. And even
beyond that, I think the TylerHero injury gets brought up often and not
that Tyler Hero is in a keypart of their team and has been for
structures that they've gone on runs,But there's almost a way that it has
(09:52):
given them more flexibility from a rotationalstampoint, because Tyler Hero is a guy
who struggles defensively, but that offensivepunch that you can leave him on the
floor. By him not being there, it allows you to float out to
Duncan Robinsons and have guys that canall compete defensively more. Duncan Robinson also
not a good defender, and he'sa guy who had to take a back
(10:13):
seat when heroes there because you can'thave both of them on the floor.
But guys like Max Jews and GabeBenson absolutely stand up on the defensive end.
They're guys that haven't been vulnerable whenthey get these one on one opportunities
against Jason Tatum, against Jaln Brown. So these guys aren't really exploitable in
the way that I think we allkind of perceive them as coming into the
playoffs, and that is the creditto them for staying ready. They fit
(10:33):
the system, they do what needsto be done, and they're just catching
fire from deep. So this isan experienced team. Guys like Kevin Loves
and Kyle Lowry have been around championships, know how the playoffs go. It
just is all clicking at the righttime. And I think all these guys
are better than them. They've beengiven credit. Yeah they are. And
now, of course, once youlook ahead, Denver is the favorite right
(10:54):
now. To win the championship.Miami is plus two twenty five, Denver's
minus two thirty. There's are essentiallygoing to be the series odds as well,
Heat plus two twenty five. Howmuch of a chance do you give
him and what do you think aboutthe odds that they have. Yeah,
I think Denver will definitely be significantfavorites. As you kind of indicated there,
I'm not counting this Heat team outanymore, and it's going to be
(11:16):
an extremely difficult matchup. I thinkYokich will have his way in the Bam
Audebaio matchups quite a bit. Ithink Spolsure is going to have to come
up with something, whether it isfronting them and doing a similar method.
But Bam Moudebaio is not the shopblocker that Anthony Davis is, so there's
not the same kind of advantage there. So I'm interested to see how that
matchup shakes up. But I've kindI'm kind of over just sleeping on this
Heat team. I think it's goingto be a series at the minimum that
(11:39):
the Heat win at least two games, and that they will show that fight.
Denver's absolutely the better team on paper, but you know, it's over
the Celtics, so were the Bucks. And I think that's kind of the
stories that if the Heat can keepplaying this level of basketball, I don't
know if there is a team thatcan beat them. But Denver's absolutely going
to be a challenge, and Ithink they will rightfully be favored to indicate
that. And looking at finals MVPwinner Yoki minus one seventy seven, Jimmy
(12:03):
Butler plus two thirty Jamal Murray nineto one. Now, of course there's
still like Jason Tatum on the boardand players like that. Obviously they're not
going to be in it. ButJamal Murray nine to one. I find
that intriguing. Is there any chancethat it could be not Nikola Yoki or
Jimmy Butler to win MVP, BecauseI think at least for Miami, Butler's
(12:24):
a lock. They just need towin it. With Denver, I kind
of leave it open there for Murrayto maybe steal an MVP. Yeah,
I think Murray's a great shout there. I think there's something that's value in
that. As I mentioned earlier, like Yokich is absolutely the motor of the
most valuable part of what the Nuggetsdo. But there's nights where Jamal Murray
takes over and he is the closerfor the team, he can catch fire
(12:46):
and in a way that just changesthe game. And he's also playing the
best basketball that we've seen from himsince the bubble. So if he keeps
that up, if he hits somebig shots, which is absolutely on the
table, and there will be theopportunity to do I think Jamal Murray can
steal that MVP. So I thinkthere is good value in that, And
if you're a believer in the Nuggets, I think that's probably the most fun
and most potentially profitable way to betthem in this one. Yeah, it
(13:09):
seems like it. We'll talk withSear Bernard. You can follow him at
Sewan Underscore Bernard one. Ultimately, who do you think does win the NBA
Finals between Denver and Miami? Istill think it is Denver. I would
love to get fully behind this Heatteam, and frankly, they've kind of
got me to a point where Iam rooting for them as underdog as they
are, and I'm excited to watchthis team play. It's gonna be an
(13:30):
interesting matchup. It definitely is aclash of styles, but I think I
think it's gonna be a series.I do expect Denver to ultimately come up
out on top. If you haveto pin me down right now, I'll
probably go Denver and six. ButI think it's going to be a fun
series, and one a lot closerthan most people will will recognize. All
right, now, let's get itto the sixers. Obviously now, in
the off season, in a coachingsearch, there was a rumor being thrown
(13:52):
out on Twitter that Frank Vogel couldbe making his way into Philly, maybe
potentially for I don't know, avisit somewhere, But Frank Vogel wasn't a
mentioned by Woes. Frank Vogel asa potential coaching hire, yay or nay,
it's a nay for me. Idon't think Vogel's bad, Like he's
(14:13):
not. The worst case scenario wouldn'tbe the end of the world signing.
He does have some sexers ties.He spent some time as an assistant coach
here, He's been around the NBAfor quite some time, has a championship
with the Lakers on a team thatwasn't overall too talented. I do think
he deserves some credit for that one, even though it was the bubble and
everything that people will throw, hestill won a championship and still lead the
team there. He's not a badcoach personally. Those guys that I rank
(14:37):
higher. Nick Nurse is the namethat jumps off the page for me,
and it's the top of the list. He's hearing interest from the Bucks and
the Songs as well, so he'sprobably the top of the list pretty pretty
much across the board for teams. So I do think the Sixers are pretty
determined to have this deep search andmake sure they get the right guy.
But you also run the risk ofif you don't act quick enough that your
guy can get swept up. Sothat's the balance. They're gonna have to
(14:58):
walk them to have several more interviewsto before they make a decision. But
personally, I would love for itto be Nick Nurse, and I think
if that's who, if that's howthey feel too, they should jump on
it sooner rather than later. Seeyou are all in on Nick Nurse.
Yeah, I believe what I reallywant to see in a head coach here
is I don't think the Sixers corehas ever had a true X and those
(15:18):
basketball tactician and that's what Nick Nurseis known for. That's kind of his
m His defining trait as a headcoach is he is more creative, he
is more think outside the box. When you think about Brett Brown and Doc
Rivers, both these guys have beenmore of locker room guys or managing personalities
or player development. That's not reallythe stages of the Sixers are in anymore.
If they need a guy who canpush them to that extra edge,
(15:39):
Nick Nurse has a championship and he'sraised the floor of the Toronto Raptors every
year that he's been there, besidesthis year which he got fired. Disappointing
how that turned out. And anotherthing that's appealing is I also feel like
the Sixers haven't had a defining justkind of style of play or culture or
anything like that. It's they've hadthe talent. They have the best players
and they wouldn't game. It's becauseof that, but they don't really have
(16:00):
that kind of system that we've seenfrom Nick Nurse putting in play. And
that's something I think is transferable, something that comes with personnel, of course,
but that's something that is also veryappealing to me. So yeah,
for me Nick Nurse is a guy. What's the biggest challenge for the new
coach, whoever that is Nick Nurseor other, the biggest challenge that they
will face with this roster number one. I'm showing pressure. This is a
(16:26):
pressure cooker opportunity. A guy thatI've talked a lot about and really like
is Sam Castell, and I believehe's going to be a phenomenal head coach
one day. This is a brutalsituation to step in as your first time
as a head coach. So Ithink whoever steps in here and needs to
understand that there's championship goals on thetable from the second you get here.
That I mean Doc Rivers think abouthe got fired after three years, after
being a number one seed, goingto the playoffs all three years, going
(16:48):
to the second round all three years, and just being a couple chopped away
from it not advancing this year.So like, I do think it was
still the right decision to make thatcall. But I think that every coach
just to be aware that this isa day one, the pressure is on
and changes need to be made. There's voices all over the place within the
Sixes organization, whether it is theJames Harden people, the Joel Embid people,
(17:08):
Daryl Morey looking over ownership involved. So there's a lot going on.
It's not the easiest job to havein the world, and whoever steps in
there needs to have their own voicein that deconfident and ready to deliver for
the team. Yeah. I thinkone of the bigger challenges as well is
just building an offense around and Bad. Obviously that's the best player, but
it's not a guard. It's acenter and plays a primarily inside, So
(17:30):
just building an offense around him, adding new wrinkles to it than what they
were doing with Doc Rivers. DoesNick Nurse have that fit or is there
a coach that has that fit thatcan work with abeat it well. Or
is that enough of a challenge thatmost coaches should be able to figure that
out or is it something that fitmatters a lot here with the coach.
It's definitely a challenge, and especiallyin today's NBA, which has become increasingly
(17:53):
perimeter oriented and guard and wing dominated. I've kind of battled with that a
little bit. Mike d'antoni's been aname that's been talked out a bunch,
and I think back like when Ithink of D'Antoni, it's a style of
play that a center could never fitin. I mean, he had PJ.
Tucker as the center for several yearsand Robert Covington ends the center.
So there's things like that. WheneverI kind of get to this balance,
it's there. I really can't comeup with like a proper player tomp for
(18:17):
Joel embiad across any of these teams. There any real or that any of
these coaches have been involved in.So it's definitely a challenge and a little
bit unique. But if you're atop level he coached, he wants the
top level players, and Joel Embiesstill fits that mold, still fits that
description, and as long as hecan keep delivering on that, you find
a way to use him. Sowhile it is a more unique skill set,
there's plenty that you can do withhim in plenty of ways. So
(18:38):
he's the MVP of the NBA fora reason. So as much as it's
a little different, I think it'sall these guys should have enough of a
basketball mind to walk in with aclean slate and find a way to bring
out the most in him, Andit's increasingly more likely that Harden is going
to go back to Houston obviously notthe Sixers. How does that change plans?
What can the Sixers do if Hardendoes move on? What are the
(19:02):
options available? What will they beable to afford? Just what do the
Sixers do post hardened? Because itdoes look like that he is more likely
to be in Houston than in Philly. Yeah, And that's the tough part
about this is the cap consideration.Because the Sixers have a ton of money
tied up already, they do nothave a lot of financial flexibility. And
(19:23):
if James Harden walks to Houston, which he can absolutely do, Houston has
the room to sign him straight up. Doesn't need to be a sign and
trade. They can just throw moneyat him and sign him under their cap
space. The Sixers they can theycan resign Harden because he's their own player,
and you're resigning him, they won'thave that free money tied up.
If he does walk, they'll haveabout twelve million dollars to play with,
So essentially you're getting like a PJ. Tucker level player to replace him,
(19:47):
not a James Harden level player. And that's where it becomes difficult. And
also when you look around on thisfree agent market, there's just not that
much this year. James Harden isalmost far and away the best free agent
on the market. Kyrie Irving's probablythe other name that pops up there,
but he also is a guy whohas his own issues floating around and reasons
not to be fully committed to him. So there's really not that much to
be replaced him with, which iswhy all these the signs point to do
(20:11):
everything you can to keep him,but there's also reasons why you shouldn't be
entertained by that. So I don'tthink it's this foregone conclusion that Harden ends
up in Houston, as sometimes it'sbeing reported. I think there's plenty of
smoke and plenty of mind games beingplayed in this all around. But it
ultimately comes down to what does JamesHarden want. Does he wants to just
go down into Houston kind of liveout the rest of his career, to
be able to relax. Where ishe still invested in trying to compete for
(20:33):
a championship, which was the messagethat he sent when he came to Philadelphia.
So I still expect the Sixers tomake their best offer to bring James
Harden back. I think that's goingto be on the table. But yeah,
the coaching, pretty much every decision, coaching especially will change depending on
how that shoe falls for James Harden. Last question for you, and I
think the ripple effect if Harden doesleave, because you just mentioned they would
(20:56):
be tight on cash, and Iimagine they're going to try and make some
moves and make some players available.Tobias Harris, the likelihood that he stays,
and what other players that you couldsee potentially moved. Obviously it's not
going to be embiid. I keepseeing that discussion brought up. That's not
happening. There's zero chance. Butwhat players do you think could be available
(21:18):
to be moved and to give themsome kind of flexibility with the roster construction.
Yeah, Tobias Harris is definitely thefirst name on the list there,
and I agree. I see theJoel Embid mock trades and everything plays.
They're all bad. Yeah, yeah, and we've talked about this too,
but like the winner of who winsa trade in the NBA is who walks
away with the best player, Andthere's just very little room to go up
(21:41):
from Joel Embied and the Sixers whilethey're still locked in on winning a championship.
They're not going to take that kindof deficit. Even if there are
flaws and there's stuff you can nitpickand reason to be frustrated, it just
doesn't get much better than Joel Emdeed. But as far as what the Sixers
will trade, I do think TobiasHarris is going to be right at the
top of that list. And we'vetalked about the contract Tobias for years now.
That's pretty much the issue here isTobias is just not effective enough on
(22:04):
court to demand the contract. Flippinghim for two guys that can make similar
production is a very worthwhile trade.I still think the hardest thing is going
to play a significant role in this. And for example, like if he
walks, I think the potential HarrisonMAXI trade for a superstar becomes signficantly more
likely, whether that is Dame Lillardor something like that. So Toby's at
(22:26):
the top of the les. Andwe also gotta think when you look down
guys like Paul Reader a free agent, the Ampthony Mountain becomes extension eligible,
Tyres Max the extension eligible Shakes Miltaina free agent, so there's a lot
of moving parts with the roster rightnow. I still think James Harden is
gonna be the first piece that swingsthing into action. But I think regardless,
Tobias is going to be a nameshop regularly. And that's at the
top of the wishless for what Darmorewill want to do this off season.
(22:49):
That is Sean Bernard alive from thewah Wah Parking Lot about to get a
what at the order machine? Whatare you gonna get? Barbecue chicken case
Oh, barbecue chicken casadia. Isee, I haven't had a Wahwa case
