Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hugh Stalk said, b it is twenty four away from
nine o'clock. Just in case Noel Chambers, our next guest
didn't hear this.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
I'm picking christ ut In Temperance to go through to
the final, and I expect well, I'm picking krish Urch
to pop tempered In in a very very close contest.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
It's it's tough when you put your neck on the line.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
Isn't it.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
I know, yeah, yeah, my credibility, I'm going to be
a lot of a lot of trouble from other players.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
Cairie Chuck, I really am dropping a minute, and it's
a very warm welcome to the show. Nol Chambers, who's
the team manager of Clearwater and in the association with
the Elmwood Trading Company. Morning, Noel, I'm very good. Thank
you and your poor old Kirie.

Speaker 4 (00:41):
Eh. Yes, Well, to be honest, I wouldn't have been
too far from that pick myself, right. I had full
faith in the guy. So it's all good. Right.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
So, Noel Chambers, you are the team manager for Clearwater
and an upset victory in Woodward Cup.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Tell us about it.

Speaker 4 (00:59):
Yeah, well, we ked did to play christ Hits in
the semi final. In the morning who were looking like
definitely the top team and as the selection the year before,
it was looking like it was going to play out
a Gimbleton final. But the boys really were focused for

(01:22):
Sunday morning and we couldn't have you know, couldn't have
gone any better. You sort of look back over what
was the sauver bullet about it, But the boys we
had a bit of a theme during the week about
creating history for clear Order and you know, eventhing it
just came right. The boys were focused and everything sort
of went our way and then we had that epic

(01:44):
final against Russeley. So it was great, it really was.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
But you think about the past history of the past
twenty one Woodward Cup competitions, Russeley have won eleven christ six.
There is something about teams knowing how to win. You
now at Clearwater have broken that mold and you now
know how to win. And when you talk about that final,
talk to us about Sam mcgil We were lucky enough

(02:10):
to talk to him a couple of weeks ago. What
a character, what a great guy, what a terrific golfer.

Speaker 4 (02:16):
Exuberance is probably the best way to describe Sam, just
above all else, a great guy and an extremely skillful golfer.
In regards to the rest of the team, like you said,
you do, there's probably an element out there that you've
got to win or should say, lose one or two beforehand.

(02:37):
We did play in the final in twenty sixteen, but
against Christi's again we only lost we had all season
that year was the final unfortunately, and then two years
ago we also made the final again in a very
close loss to Templeton. So the last few years we've
been building quite strongly and we've always been viewer thereabouts.

(03:00):
We just couldn't get it over the line, and this
year we just did. And we went too worried about
the fact we qualified fourth because right from the start
of the season we basically you just got to make
the playoffs and if you want to win it, you've
got to beat every team, and we just happened to
qualify fourth. It didn't really mean an issue to us

(03:22):
that we were fourth and we were playing the top team,
because we're going to have to beat every team to
actually win the competition, and that's obviously what we set
out to do.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Yeah, look, I think actually when you're in a semi
final scenario and if you do come in fourth ranked.
I think it's a really good position to come into.
You've mentioned that already. The fact that you then had
to win that semi final then the final best way
to make a victory surely and to get your name
on that Woodward Cup.

Speaker 4 (03:48):
And as to say that, the team was extremely focused.
There was quite a lot of nervous anticipation during the week.
So you know, there's always a good thing, I think
because it shows your respecting your opposition and you're respecting
the moment. And then the boys we just focused on
that and they knew we had the team to do it,

(04:10):
and everyone just played very well and things just clicked
on that day. So I couldn't fold any performance from
many of the players.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
No, fantastic.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
So what is a head for clear Water in the future.
What will this do for the club?

Speaker 4 (04:22):
Well, the club's had an incredible year, to be honest,
particularly at the elite level. You interviewed Sam recently. Sam
won the senior division of the Kenneby match Play. Michael Bailey,
who was in the Woodward Cup team, won the Master's division.
You appreciate Cooper Moore won the New zeal Amateur Champs
this year and that was the second year in a row.

(04:44):
Then New Zealand Amateur Champ came from clear Water. Sam
won the salver for the best record in the Woodward Cup.
John Parlane won the salver for the best record in
the Plant Cup, which is the second division. All our
men's team across the board made it into the finals
this year in clear World also won the Championshire Champions

(05:05):
and both men and woman, and then also a women's
team is in the finals of the Pollock Cup next
week as well. So it's been a quite an incredible year.
But obviously the icing on the cake was the winning
of that cup because it's been a long time coming,
and to be honest, the ladies that clear would have
showed us up a bit. We haven't won a team's
event and that was the first fun first men's embit

(05:30):
that would run, and the ladies had won several before that,
so it was good to get one on the board.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
Oh absolutely, And that just shows that you've just got
to keep trying and trying. I mean the other part
I guess is the subob Charles Golf Center and that
was opened this year too, wasn't it. I Mean, that
was that's amazing. That has to help your golfers.

Speaker 4 (05:49):
Yeah, yeah, and even players from what I call the
weekend golfers, you know, the sort of teams of twenty
five yadio keepers though even stated you know, it just
really improved the game because they're out there practicing a
lot more. They love the facilities sort of thing, and
you know, there's plenty, plenty of different sort of phases

(06:10):
of practicing that you can do out there of that facility,
and it's a real issue to the club and it's
just been really great.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
How's your golf, Nol Chambers.

Speaker 4 (06:20):
Oh, that's a good question. When I managed to get out,
it's had all this sort of thing, to be honest,
and I've always lived by that saying that those that
can do those that can't manage. So I'm quite happy
you being a manager.

Speaker 1 (06:36):
Oh I think you're being very modest. But anyway, I'm
sure your expertise had a big say and keeping the
team grounded and focused on what they needed to do.

Speaker 3 (06:44):
Surely.

Speaker 4 (06:46):
Yeah, well, I guess that helps. Being a past player,
and you know, being in those situations before I played
in that together sixteen fine, and I probably played my
last game Cup. I think it was about twenty and seventeen.
And I guess the players respond to the fact that

(07:06):
they know I've been there before, They know what to
go through. You know, what are you going to be
some of the hurdles, et cetera. And yeah, they just know.
I'd like to think the best part of what I
do as a manager is like communicate. Well, so hopefully
that's that's weird well for the players, but you'd really
if us the players, how well my.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
Perforwards lent here, Well, well, that's the important thing.

Speaker 1 (07:30):
We're saying that it's absolutely top notch, fantastic and we
salute you brilliant. And I've just actually, I don't know
if you know Lindsay Kerr. He's gives us everything in
the country sport that we need to know. Got a
very talented son living over in the United States and
he's just saying just a moment to skype for him.
His grandson, Jordan, made the state final of Illinois Secondary

(07:53):
School Golf Championship first time, first time his school has
made it, and his grandson's there.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
It's pretty amazing, isn't it.

Speaker 4 (08:03):
There's a lot we said about golf and what it
can bring you and for your future that as well,
so it's all looking good. We're looking looking good for
twenty twenty five too, must.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
Be yes, exactly right.

Speaker 1 (08:15):
Well, Noel, thanks so much for cheating to us, and
congratulations again on that World War Cup victory first time
for clear Waterhouse Cool and you will have a big smile.

Speaker 3 (08:24):
On your face.

Speaker 4 (08:25):
Hi, thank you so much.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
Phelie Champion, thank you very much.
