With thanks to the Elmwood Trading Company, this week Lesley was joined by Aaron Tallott from the Burnham Golf Club, a pleasant rural club directly opposite the Burnham Army Camp south of Christchurch.

The club is rebuilding after a tough few years, but membership numbers are on a steady incline as Rolleston and Selwyn continue to grow.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
News talks, but it's twenty five away from nine o'clock.
In an association with the Elmwood Trading Company, we go
to the president of the Burnham Golf Club, Aaron Talent.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Good morning, good morning, how are you very good?

Speaker 1 (00:11):
What's it like out where you are at the moment?

Speaker 2 (00:15):
It's actually pinned out to be not a bad day
today after the rough weaver have had the last few days.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
I know, did you obviously the area of christ Uch
I'm talking around tied Tapoo round that. Did you get
much water lying around?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Yet? There's plenty. I know there's a few courses around
us at the moment that are closed, but lucky for us,
we drain very well. We're on an old riverbed, so
we're open and welcome to take members and anybody else
from other clubs looking for a game.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Oh you fantastic. Well, it is a nice little place
to go to, isn't it. Tell us a bit more
about the Burnham Golf Club.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
Well, it's a sociad with the Army Club. If the
Army has been for a long time, and you know
we've still got a good relationship with them. We've been
for a bit of wars over the last few years,
but we're definitely working on the other side and we're
coming out looking a lot better. So the club's getting
bigger and bigger, and it's expending all the time.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
So do many of the Army bods themselves join your club?

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Yeah, we've got a few Army members. They still get
to play their Wednesday games there. They're most welcome to
come play for free, so a lot of them take advantage.
A lot of them come and practice during the week.
So yeah, they definitely take advantage of the course, which
is cool.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Yeah. How close physically is it to the camp itself,
the Army camp.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
Yeah, it's lily across the road, so right, very close. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
You wouldn't want your golf balls to go astray too far,
would you. Na.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Well, they've got an m O D up there. They've
still got in the middle of the golf course. You
definitely don't want your balls going on there. You don't
get them back yourself.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
Oh yeah, well do you play off yourself?

Speaker 2 (01:45):
Plan off of twelve at the moment? So yeah, it's
about the last I've been them struggling a bit, but
I'll keep trying.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
Yeah, I just have to get out there more often.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Yeah, I wish that'd be great, wouldn't it.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
So tell us why, you know, with the advantages of
joining Burnham.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Very social club, we're a lot smaller, so there's no
you don't have to worry about access in the club
room and plan at any time. Where I know a
lot of clubs around us, they're a lot bigger, so
you've got to bocking weeks in advances to get a
game where you can just rock up to burn them
pretty much anytime, and yeah, feel free to have a game.
And like I said, we're very social. We try to
be very friendly and accommodate as many people as we can.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
And of course you're very close physically to Rolston and
which we know how fast that's growing. You would have
capitalized on that.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
Yeah, definitely, we definitely try to so. And we're still
getting a lot of people inquiring about joining, and yeah,
a lot of people moving. You get the emails I've
just moved to Rolliston looking for a golf club. So yeah,
it keeps us very busy.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
So how many members have you got?

Speaker 2 (02:46):
What's the split at the moment, We've got about, just
at the top of my head, roughly about two hundred
and forty odd then we have it's about one hundred
and forty five I think full members. And we've got
what we call an associate membership, which is just for
you hold a handicap with a golf club and you
still play green fees. And we started that up probably

(03:10):
don't want to sound too bad, but in competition with
the golf warehouse, just want to help people out and
that's actually brought them a lot a lot of more
full members for us as well that people have been
coming along and thought this is good and sort of
took the step for ever becoming absolute full membership.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
So were you the most famous member out there?

Speaker 2 (03:28):
No, no, no, we actually have got probably one of
the most famous people in New Zealand and one of you.
And Simon Mannering's a member out here.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
Really well, okay, he's.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
An associate member. So his brother was in the army
and yeah, so they've joined up. He joined up just
to get a handicap, which is we're happy to take
him on board.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
I don't even know he lived down here.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
No, No, he's a Nelson yeah right, yeah, yeah, he's
just to get a handicap so he can play. Well.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
I know he was down last weekend, wasn't he Yes? Yeah, yeah,
did he get a game?

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Well, he might have not that I know if he
wasn't there on SAD Day and he wasn't there an
act day, so he probably was the AD day to
be fair.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
Yeah, probably working everybody around doing the networking thing at
the rugby league. Yeah, anyway, that sounds it's a very
attractive golf club to be part of. And I know
how big Anzac Day must be for you. That's your
big tournament, right that is.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Yeah, so I think let's see, we had one hundred
and twenty six players. We try and do it pretty
good luck. We have a dawn parade and then they
come over to have breakfast and then play golf. Thirty
dollars we charge us here and it gets your breakfast
and we've got everyone a prize on the price table
as well. So yeah, and it's like I said, it's
a pretty social day everyone sort of. You know, you

(04:42):
just turn up, you make your fours, theres to go
and you're tee off as soon as you had enough
breakfast and feel like you're ready to go, and yeah,
then we're into it and we got quite well, we
got it all done by about four o'clock and then
a lot of guys taught her off to the league afterwards.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
Yeah, well that was very well timed everything, wasn't it
in terms of that US Rugby League, and of course
the poignancy of the day itself with Enzac Day being remembered.
Have you got any other big events coming up?

Speaker 2 (05:10):
We're pretty quiet now over winter and next one will
be a Labor Day tournament. It's one we're sort of
just starting to grow now with I think last year
we've got about sixty so I'm sure we'll get a
few more this year. But apart from that year we're
pretty quiet. We will be looking in the future to
bring back the Burnam Open. Like I said, we've been
a bit bit smaller lately, so we're just slowly trying

(05:31):
to build things up and we don't want to chuck
too much into quickly either.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
So are you quite young to be a president eron?

Speaker 2 (05:39):
I suppose so, But as the way the club's moving
at the moment where we have got a lot younger,
a lot of our elder members have moved on that
like some passed away steadily and just some like yeah,
needing to get a bot away from it.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
Well, it's not an easy task, but at least you
obviously love playing out there. You're passionate about the golf
club and that that's all that counts, and you're helping
other people play the sport that they love.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
Yeah exactly. Well I said, we're very accommodating, and I
do have a lot of people out there help us.
We're all volunteers, so you know, it's not just me
and a lot of people have worked really hard to
get the course back to where it is now, and
you sort of feel like you want to You've gone
through this, so you want to keep seeing it how
much further we can go, So you sort of you

(06:26):
tie yourself in if it makes sense, you know your
work being Yes, I don't want to leave now. You
want to keep pushing.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
It, see it to its fruition.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
Yeah, yeah, exactly. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:36):
Oh well, Aaron Tellett, you're doing God's work out there
in terms of golfing terms, and we're grateful that you've
come to the phone this morning and we could chat
about the Burnham Golf Club.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Not a problem. I much appreciate the time to be
able to spread the word of Burnham.

Speaker 1 (06:48):
Yeah, get out there in the sun while it's with us.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
Yep, they take advantage of while we're one of the
better training courses. If you can't get on your course,
feel free to come out and have a game.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
Brilliant, Thank you very much, We have great day you too,
Thanks Aaron Tellet from the Boonham Golf Club.
