Speaker 1 (00:00):
Anyway in association with the Elwood Trading Company. Time to
(00:03):
go out to the Racketon Park Driving Range. And our
man this morning is Jared Mills. He joins us, Good morning, morning, Lazie.
How are you very good? You're keeping warm and dry?
Speaker 2 (00:14):
I am for now yep ye.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
Now tell us how you started playing golf? What got
your hooped on it?
Speaker 2 (00:21):
I was pretty young, I think would have been around
the three to five years of age, and there was
probably like most kids, I was playing too many sports
and golf was one of them, and I just developed
until where I am sort of today.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
So when did you become a golf professional?
Speaker 2 (00:41):
So I moved to christ Church from Nelson after college
and started working in a pro shop and I just
got better and I turned professional in two thousand and seven.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Who has made an impression on you to take your
golf to that level.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
Was probably more inclined from the teaching side of it
rather than that high end playing side of it. So
I was more fond of that development of golf. So
the coaches I surrounded were at work and top coaches
around the world sort of was my inspiration. Really, So
(01:20):
tell us, you.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Know you're talking about being a teacher now, you know,
in the professional sense, you've got the range up and running.
Tell us a little bit about how that's come about.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Yeah, So it was a sort of point probably a
year and a half ago, where I knew where I
was working at at the record and complex was eventually
going to be housing. So I was sort of thinking
about what I'd do with my future and I started
looking around at coaching indoors and before you know, we've
at least a building on Rooyodvale. Abum, we've got a
(01:52):
five bay indoor training.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Thing to oh five days. That's pretty handy.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Yeah, so's it's a little boutiquey, but it's an impressive
little building. From all accounts, everyone's been sort of well
by the look of it with the fit out, and
very proud of it because it's just three families have
been involved and we've fitted this out ourselves.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
Well, it's a mess of undertaking, isn't it in today's environment?
Speaker 2 (02:17):
Yeah, a lot of sleepless nights, I can sure.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
So what does it offer apart from just going and
then hitting balls?
Speaker 2 (02:25):
So from a learning perspective, there's so many different ways
you can train. But for the first time really in
Christ if you're really able to understand what an earth
is happening to your shop, every base sit it out
with cameras. As soon as you hit a shot, you
can see a picture or a video from above showing
(02:47):
you the club entering the ball, and that is why
your ball is doing what it's doing. So for the
first time, you're really able to see what the club's doing,
where it's hitting the ball, and what the club data
and the path of the club is coming into the ball.
So there's that side of it. From a learning perspective.
We're a twenty four to seven business as well, So
I just noticed one of our members is in this
(03:09):
morning practicing before the kids wake up, So that's a
little bit different. And like, you can take it as
far as you want. You can you can train use
of numbers, or you can literally pay golf courses on there.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
Yeah, like you can play the and Andrews golf course.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Yeah, We've got over three hundred odd courses. St. Andrews
is definitely the one that I would say the vast
majority have started to have a go at because it's
just so iconic.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Well, I guess the thing is if people come to
your place, the range, goolf dot co dot m Z.
There's actually no excuses once they've been through there and
they've seen technically what they have to do.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Yeah, so you can take it that far, or you
can simply just have fun with your daughter or your
son and play like virtual courses that are the longest
whole sixty meters. So my three year old son can
get around on that without feeling like he's miles away
from the hull.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Which end of roidvllee are you?
Speaker 2 (04:03):
We're sort of in the middle. It's actually kind of
where the old Garden City driving range was yellow. Those
golfers can cast their mind back to those days. Yes,
but we're right opposite Traviva Cafe.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
All right, Oh very nice. Gosh, what a great initiative,
and especially, as I mentioned before, in this today's economic
environment as well. But you do know that we've found
out anywhere by having this little spot on our show
thanks to the Onward Trading Company, that people love their golf,
and especially post COVID, they are playing it in their
(04:36):
droves everywhere.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Yeah. I can just remember the days when that driving
range it recon and first started, and how much busier
the place has got over the years. So it's just
great to see golfs in an incredibly good space and
now you can safely practice without being in that cold easterly.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
Oh absolutely, and because of people like you were sharing
their skills.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Jared Mills, well, I hope to share that, and that's
sort of we're prob ourselves on just making everyone feel
comfortable in the area and understanding if I need any
help or what's going on with her to help them.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
So the best way to get in touch with you
is through the website the Range goolf dot co dot
in z.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Yep, so let's how you can make your booking. We're
on social media as well, the Range dot golf on Instagram,
but there's a few spots left today as well. If
you feel like you're a bit locked out there and
you want to.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
Get out of the weather, sounds like a great idea
can tell you need to be doing some exercise. Thank
you so much and well done you.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Thanks so much, much appreciation, all.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
