Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's chat some golf now in partnership with our friends
at the Elmwood Trading Company, joining us on the All
Sports Breakfast this week is Andy SAMs. Andy is the
hid professional out at the Waimari Beach Golf Club and
the principal at the shoote part Academy. The Shoe Bar Academy,
under Andy's guidance, has been producing a steady line of

(00:21):
golfers for a while, including the likes of Zaria Born
and at the end Collier and Andy is what else?
Good morning to you, Good morning mate?

Speaker 2 (00:29):
How are you?

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Yeah? Very well? Thank you, hope you are too. Tell
us a little bit about yourself first and foremost, how
did you get started into the great game of golf?

Speaker 2 (00:38):
We'll I'm born and bred in the UK. Started playing
my granddad played a little bit, so he sort of
took me out on the course when I was little,
but didn't really start until I was probably thirteen years old.
Like most breads and football mad up until sort of
the age of fifteen sixteen. And then when that dream dies,
you think what else am I going to do? And yeah,

(01:00):
golf filled that void and I've been doing it ever
since pretty much.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
And obviously it's taken you to another part of the
world here in New Zealand and christ Church specifically. Tell
us about I guess, your continuation of your passion and
golf and how you became a golf pro here in
christ Church.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Yeah, well, I've done all my qualifications in the UK,
and I'd had a really really good job doing sports
marketing in the golf scene for Red Bull in that
UK place, So we traveled the world with that job.
It was really really fantastic for sort of four years.
But I guess at that time then I wanted to

(01:41):
take a little bit of time off, so I came
to New Zealand for what was meant to be sort
of one year oe and never left and then sort
of kept get another I thought I'll get another visa,
and then I was fortunate enough at that time in
two thousand and eight FORMI Golf opened up, which was
quite close to where I lived in summer, and yeah,
Carl Lawson there gave me an opportunity to get back

(02:02):
into the game and I took it both hands.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
From there, we will get into what you're up to
here in Canbary, but I do want to ask you
about that Red Bull experience. Where are we talking? We
did it take you? You must have rubbed shoulders with some
interesting characters.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Yeah, yeah, So we had a program this is all
pre sort of F one investment that they had, and
we had a sort of a full usage marketing campaign
with sort of mainstream sports, So we were in charge
of multiple sports, but obviously golf was the area where
me and my colleague work mostly, so I would spend
twenty five weeks of the year out on the European Tour,

(02:38):
Challenge Tour working. We did some junior Masters class stuff
with the likes of which Harmon and all of his brothers,
which was a really I think that experience where I
got to spend sort of four weeks with those guys
really sort of made me think that I would be
pretty interested in probably coaching the game from that point
on if I was to get back into that field.
So that sort of sort of lit the US for

(03:00):
me from there.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
Andy SAMs Well us here on our golf SEGMA and
partnership with the album with Training Company. So you're at
y Mari Beach Golf Club at the moment. How long
have you been there? Did they choose you or did
you choose them?

Speaker 2 (03:15):
I've been here. I think I started just pre COVID,
so twenty twenty, that's been getting on five and a
half years now. I think it was just good timing.
They had an opportunity open. I had a couple of
contacts for people here that I coached for a while,
and they sort of encouraged me to apply and had

(03:35):
an interview. Who got on well with the guys and
just sort of goals aligned, I guess, and yeah, I'm
really glad I made the move. It's been really positive,
really one of the best movies I've made.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
So it was great, fantastic. And tell us a little
bit more about the Shoot par Academy. What level of
golfers are you mainly working within the academy?

Speaker 2 (03:54):
Well, for everything from the age of the real little
beginner kids from sort of five to six years of age,
all the way through to you know, your elite level
players as well club members of every stage adult beginners.
So it's a full, you know, a full widespread of
the of the market, I would say, And yeah, I

(04:16):
think the variety is good. It keeps you interested.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
And tell us about two of what's been described here
as your current star pupils and Zaria and Itsy and
how well are they going at the minute.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Yeah, really good. So Zaria has recently just committed to
scholarship in the States at Landa University in South Carolina,
which is really positive. So she's just got two years.
She's not going till twenty twenty seven, but it's an
early commitment. So that's her sort of you know, she's
got that to look forward to and aim towards. And

(04:51):
in terms of her development, Nathian's playing some really good
goal at the moment. I think this year hopefully on
the national levels of breakout year for him. I know
he's got the ability. It's just performing in their moment
and then I believe the gold for him. Will also
be looking to play college golf in the States as well.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Exciting times indeed, And just just more broadly speaking, Andy,
in your time here in Canterbury and golfing circles, how
much of you notice the speaking of various guests and
the segment when I filled in for Leslie. You know,
the re emergence of golf in a way after the
COVID period because that was one of the only sort
of sports you could do whilst self isolating, but in

(05:31):
terms of the popularity of the sport young ones coming through.
How impressive are you about the status of golf and
canterbr at the minute.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
I think it's the best it's been definitely since I've
been in the country, I think, I mean just obviously
I can speak from why Mara's point of view, but
we've got a full membership. Very rarely in the past
have I ever known as to have a wait list
in winter, and that's the case at the moment. So
you know, the desire cape people to keep playing, desire

(06:01):
of players to join golf clubs, which is positive. I
think across the board most clubs are approaching sort of
full membership numbers, so it can only be positive. And
from the junior standpoint, I mean we've got a great
crop of players across multiple clubs in the region. There's
you know, a few few coaches doing great things in

(06:23):
the area. I think it's been really helped by Blamington
at Canbery Golf. He's done a great job since he's
come in on the development side, so it's really changed
since he came in and we're seeing the fruits of
that with the players that are being developed.

Speaker 1 (06:40):
Yeah, and so many role models too, right Andy, on
the greater stages of all you know, we've got Ryan Fox's,
Dame Lydia Cooe, Daniel Kazuma, Kabori from Ammoka from this region,
ter Emelia Garvey, sort of the list goes on, it does.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
Yeah, I mean they're all doing great at the moment. Obviously,
Emilia has had some really good results recently. It's good
for the girls to look up to Momoka coming through.
Obviously Ryan Fox is at a cracker of a year
so far. So yeah, it's great for Nazerland and it's
i mean for a small population country continue to produce

(07:15):
top sportsmen across the board. It's really interesting way it happens.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
It's good exciting times. Indeed, Hey, Andy, thanks so much
for your time here on our golf Siegmund and partnership
with the Elmwood Trading Company and all the beasts going
forward with your academy and you work there at the
y Mari Beach Golf Club. Really appreciate it than mate.
