Morry Frenkel speaks with Dr Or Kakhlon, Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurobiology at the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem, and member of the Jerusalem Brain Community, about Adult Polyglucosan Body Disease (APBD), an ultra-rare genetic degenerative disorder affecting the nervous system, found predominantly in Ashkenazi Jews. Or discusses the nature of the disorder and his discovery of a small molecule that is able to at least partially improve the locomotion and reflexes in a mouse model of the condition, which offers hope for some remediation in the future for sufferers of APBD and potentially, of other diseases. Blood tests for mutations causing APDB are available only as a diagnostic service at specialised laboratories. Donations to support this important research can be made through www.hadassahaustralia.org/donations and selecting Dr. Or Kakhlon Hadassah Neurology Department Research in the dropdown menu of the specific programmes.
