Winning leaders make champion choices consistently.

(00:04):
One of the things that's really important if you do any
kind of speaking is a foundational phrase.
Your mindset is really critical to everything that you do.
One of the most difficult people to lead is yourself.
Only three things we have the power to change or what we
think, what we say, and what we do.
Don't assume that what you've been doing is the best thing

(00:24):
to do.
It's not that difficult to increase and improve your
emotions.
This is how we love ourselves.
I'd like to add one more thing that you can add daily
that's going to have a huge impact on every area of your
life, and that's a simple thing,
three-letter word called...
Welcome to the Leadership and Love podcast.

(00:46):
We will cover leadership, mindset, personal development,
and sales and marketing.
You'll experience thought-provoking conversations with both
nationally and internationally recognized leaders.
Our goal is to inspire you and deliver actionable items
that you can implement to help you accelerate your growth.

(01:06):
Get ready to discover the magic and the power when you lead
with love.
Welcome back to another episode of Leadership and Love
everybody.
This is my monthly episode where I'm gonna give you some
insights and wisdom on how to be a better leader and how to
lead with love.

(01:27):
So just recently I was asked to come in and speak to both
the female and male volleyball teams at a private academy. A
nd, in my presentation I had a foundational phrase.
One of the things that's really important if you do any
kind of speaking is a foundational phrase. And,

(01:49):
a foundational phrase is basically the one idea,
the most important idea you want people to go away with. A
nd, I had been asked to speak on mindset,
and so today this is going to be about mindset,
one of the pillars of what I really think is important in
both leadership and love. And, s
o your mindset is really critical to everything that you

(02:13):
do, as most of us already know. But,
my foundational phrase for this presentation to all these
volleyball players was...
winners make champion choices consistently.
Now I'm gonna morph that for today,
and it'll be the title of this episode.
The title of this episode is Winning Leaders Make Champion C

(02:38):
hoices Consistently.
So as we all know,
one of the most difficult people to lead is yourself. It's
easy to point the finger. It's easy to tell everybody else
what to do. It's easy to...
the old do what I say not what I do kind of thing. But
today,
I'd really like to talk about how you can help make yourself

(02:59):
a better leader with simple choices. And one of the things
I want you to understand is that simple choices and even
small actions can make a huge difference,
but they only make a difference when they're done over time.
One of the things I love to share with people is if you had

(03:21):
to cut down a redwood tree,
and redwood trees are huge you know,
they could be 15-20 feet,
30-40 feet across. If you went to that tree with an axe and
took five swings at it every day,
at some point that tree's coming down. You're gonna cut
that tree down. It's not a question of if,

(03:41):
it's simply a matter of when. Well,
I want you to know to be a better leader it's really the
same thing. It's a daily practice,
and it could be just a little thing,
but done repeatedly has a big impact. You've all heard...
well maybe you haven't...
but,
there's the story of if you don't think you can't be powerful,

(04:02):
we all have had the experience of being in a dark room with
a mosquito, right? So, you can have power,
you don't have to have size to have impact.
So,
what I was talking about is winning leaders make champion
choices consistently. So today...

(04:22):
and when we talk about this mindset and choices,
I want to really cover three topics and then add a fourth
that I think is really the one of the most critical. But
when we make choices,
there's three areas I'd like you to think about today,
and I'd like you to pick one for you that you think is the
weakest and take take action today. So the three areas I

(04:46):
want to talk about is your mind your body,
and your emotions. We have the ability to make choices that
have an impact and control over all those things.
One of the things I do when I do a presentation or a
seminar, workshops,
those kinds of things is I talk about the only three things

(05:08):
we have the power to change and what we think, what we say,
and what we do.
So I'd like to start with your body.
In my presentation I just did for these volleyball players,
I made a really clear demonstration of how everything,
everything we put into our body is either positive or
negative.

(05:29):
There's no in between, there's no straddling the fence.
So all day long you are making choices.
You are either putting things in your body that make you
healthy, strong, vibrant, energetic, energized,
or you're putting things in your body that make you weaker,
sick, tired,

(05:50):
plain old feel like you're just having a bad day.
And food is energy.
Einstein proved that everything is energy.
So I want you to be aware that every time you put something
in your mouth you're making a choice.
One of the things that I shared with these volleyball
players is it's going to be your choice all day long,

(06:14):
but don't take for granted that what you've been doing is
working or it's the best moves.
One of the things that I shared with them is I don't eat
anything processed when I eat at home.
If I go out to eat, which I do every now and then,
then I kind of take my gloves off.
But when I eat at home I focus on eating one item,

(06:36):
meaning I don't eat anything processed.
A carrot or broccoli or an apple or fish,
whatever it may be.
But I'm not eating things that have been put together with
a bunch of other ingredients and then a bunch of other
additives like preservatives and flavors and artificial
colors and all those things have had to be added to it.

(06:59):
This eliminates a couple of things.
It eliminates the intake of all the sugar.
And I could do, maybe I will,
I'll do a separate video on sugar alone.
But by eating things that only have one ingredient,
it really takes all the other processed stuff out of it.
A point I'd like to make when I was a young boy,

(07:21):
there weren't all these people dying of cancer and heart-
related problems, heart attacks, strokes,
all those kinds of things.
But we were eating completely different back then,
and there wasn't all this processed food.
The other thing I'd like to point out is the things you're
putting in your mouth are what you're drinking.
At this point, you could be drinking pop, not good at all.

(07:46):
Again, it's the content and the sugar is in it.
And I'm going to pause for a second.
There's a YUKA, Y-U-K-A, there's an app you can download,
and it will give you,
you can scan the barcode on a product,
and it'll give you the nutritional value and how safe it is
for you to eat instantly.

(08:08):
And one of the things I did with these volleyball players
is I scanned a can of Coke and a can of Pepsi.
And on a scale of 100,
100 being it's good and safe and healthy for you,
both Coke and Pepsi both got zero, zero.
Gatorade, same thing, a lot of additives, a lot of sugar.

(08:30):
So again,
don't assume that what you've been doing is the best thing
to do and take a good hard look at what you're putting into
your mouth.
That's a choice that you make all day long.
Now, I want to be clear on what I said earlier.
Let's say, for example,
you're drinking pop now or you're drinking four or five

(08:52):
cups of coffee with lots of sugar.
Start in the morning with a 12 to 16 ounce glass of water,
just that glass of water.
You want to drink your coffee, drink your coffee.
You still want to drink your pop for now, drink your pop.
But start with that 16-ounce glass of water.
Eat something today that is only one ingredient.

(09:14):
Have an apple, a banana, an orange, a pear,
whatever that may be,
but eat something that's one ingredient.
Now,
you can see what I'm talking about and how you can start
with this one simple action.
Now,
will one glass of water today make a difference in your
health?
Probably not.
But will one glass every day for the rest of your life make

(09:38):
a difference?
The answer is yes.
And so, when you look at this,
one of the things that you can do is...then go and you can
go 30 days, add a glass of water every morning for 30 days.
And then after 30 days,

(10:00):
add a glass of water at lunch or before lunch.
Great thing to curb your appetite,
or if you're looking to lose some weight is drink water
before a meal.
It helps fill you up.
You don't eat as much.
But you can see how that one act,
that one choice of choosing a glass of water will make a
difference.
Let's move to your mind.

(10:22):
What are you putting in your mind?
It's the same thing.
It's either positive or negative.
And so are you focusing on the positive or are you focusing
on the negative?
Are you putting in positive?
Or are you putting in negative?
Social media. Social media is a very powerful tool,
but for the most part,

(10:43):
it's not as positive as you think it is.
And it's very addicting.
I'm really myself working on breaking as much time as I
spend on social media.
But I'd like to focus on the news or what you read.
Do you read the newspaper?
Do you watch the news on TV?
Do you listen to the news on the radio?

(11:05):
The news is negative.
Now, you might need to know the news for work, but again,
limit what you learn and how much you take in from the news
and only do it based on what you need to know for your job
and then get off the news.
The news is negative.
A lot of our thoughts that we think about ourselves are

(11:27):
negative.
And a lot of the things that we look at or watch on TV,
movies, video games are very, very negative.
And so it's very difficult to be a great leader and to love
yourself when you are putting negative things into your
mind.

(11:48):
So here's something that you can do to put positive things
in your mind.
You could write three things that you're grateful for every
day.
Every day,
try to write three different things that you're grateful
for.
That gets your brain focused on the positive,
focused on the things that are going really well in your
life.
You could read a book that has information that's going to

(12:12):
make you healthier, better at your job, better at sales,
better at being rich,
better at being a great person in relationships.
But, what you can...and again,
this is the same thing that we just talked about.
One of the things that you can do is if you if you pick up
a book and read that book for just 10 minutes every

(12:35):
morning.
You've got 10 minutes and that's not that big of a deal,
but 10 minutes over the course of a year,
you don't have read a couple of books.
And the average person reads less than half a book a year.
Imagine how much wisdom you could gain,

(12:57):
how much information,
how much knowledge you could gather for you and those on
your team, your family,
those people that you love by simply reading for 10 minutes
every day.
And again, after that 30 days, bump it up to 15 minutes.
Be astounded at what you can accomplish.
In today's world, they've got books on audio.

(13:20):
There's a great app called Hoopla, H-O-O-P-L-A.
You get a library card from your local library.
You can listen to all their self-help, self-development,
personal development, sales, marketing,
how to grow your wealth,
how to build your real estate empire, you name it.
You can get all their audio books for free,

(13:41):
downloaded right to your phone.
So then you can listen to all these kinds of things going
back and forth on your drive to work.
Turn off the radio.
I tell people I'm always learning when I'm driving.
That's a perfect opportunity to take advantage of that time
to make you a better you.

(14:02):
Next thing I want to talk about is your emotions.
It's not that difficult to increase and improve your
emotions.
I learned in Mike Jones,
if you haven't learned to listen to that episode,
I highly recommend you go back and listen to it.
But Mike Jones leads this amazing company called Discover
Leadership.
And in that in one of his programs,

(14:24):
he talks about people don't do enough up downs, up downs.
Up, downs, or smiling?
Up, down, up, down.
But there's great power in this, and if you smile,
it's impossible to feel bad.
No matter what you're in the middle of, or how trying it,
or stressful, scared, worried, depressed you are, smile,

(14:46):
and it moves, I think, 40 or 50,
maybe 60 muscles in your face to smile,
and that can change your emotion.
Think about something...
if you're having a bad day and you want to change your
emotion.
Now, this is one of the things that's powerful,
is you want to do this before you're in the middle of the

(15:08):
bad day, or the trying moment, or whatever that may be,
but think of something in your life that brings a smile to
your face.
One of them for me was, I was walking back from a park,
I had been playing with my granddaughters, and I was ahead,
and they were kind of behind me with their parents,
and one of my granddaughters, Molly,

(15:29):
she ran up to me and put her arm around my waist,
and that's how we walked,
and I put my arm around her shoulders.
She was six or seven at the time,
and her just running to me and putting her arm around my
waist and us walking home, it's just one of my very,
very fondest memories, and so when I'm having a tough day,

(15:49):
I think of that memory, and I think about how sweet it was,
how tender, how loving,
and how much I appreciated that I mattered in her life,
and so think of a memory like that for you,
and then when you're having that tough day,
that tough moment, a trying time, stressful situation,
think back to that, and again,

(16:11):
that's gonna shift your emotion.
You could actually set up a time on your calendar,
or you could do this in the morning as well, you could...
and everybody's...
there's lots of books out there about your more,
the power of a morning routine,
so I'd highly recommend you go do that.
Start building a morning routine,
and I've given you a couple ideas on this podcast

(16:34):
specifically, right?
You could start with drinking a glass of water,
you could read for 10 minutes,
and you could think of something joyful in your past for
your emotional,
and you could do all three of those things if you're an
overachiever and want to tear into it,
but you could do that,
and you could have a couple of those memories,
but you could do that emotional exercise at different times

(16:55):
throughout the day, but just start with the,
in the morning, think of a memory of the past or something,
something you enjoyed, being with somebody,
loving somebody, somebody loving you,
somebody giving you something,
you're sharing something with somebody, all those things.
Now,
one of the things that I want you to know is that when I

(17:20):
built this podcast,
it was really for leaders to know that they can incorporate
love,
and one of the things that we need to incorporate love with
the most is ourselves.
Nobody's harder on us than we are on ourselves,
and so these last three ideas I've given you to put
positive things in your body,
to put positive things in your mind,

(17:42):
and to put positive things into your emotions.
This is how we love ourself.
You think you're too busy?
I don't have, Louis,
I don't have time to read for 10 minutes.
What are you thinking?
I don't, I can't drink water,
I can't start my day without my cup of coffee.
Those are all limiting beliefs around this thing called
mindset, and I'm gonna tell,

(18:03):
I'm gonna do a episode on limiting beliefs, but for today,
I really want to emphasize that taking this time for you is
how you love yourself, how you care for yourself,
and while we're on the subject of loving yourself,
I'd like to add one more thing that you can add daily
that's gonna have a huge impact on every area of your life,

(18:27):
and that's a simple thing, three-letter word called fun,
F-U-N, fun.
Now, what I'll do is I'm gonna build an acronym for fun,
actually, but that's another episode as well.
I apparently, I've got lots to do.
So, well, every day, and I mean every day, have fun,

(18:48):
and who says life has to be serious?
Work can be fun, playing with your kids can be fun.
having fun with your spouse,
having fun with yourself. I can tell you that I believe if
you go through the day and you don't have fun,
you've lost the day. You didn't win that day,

(19:09):
you've lost that day because you didn't have fun. There's
no guarantee of tomorrow. I think fun is one of the easiest
and most profitable,
meaning it gives you the greatest rewards quickly is to
have fun every day. Now sometimes for me having fun is a
long hot shower until I run it out of hot water. Sometimes

(19:32):
for me having fun is just sitting outside or taking a walk
and enjoying and appreciating nature. Whatever color the
sky is. The sounds that I'm hearing. Whatever that may be. I
t's not difficult to have fun. If you'd like to take action
on fun today,
I challenge you to make two lists. A list of things that

(19:56):
you do and like to do that are fun that don't take any
money. There's a list of things that you like to do that
are fun that do take money. Play in solitaire like really
with a deck of cards not on a computer but play in
solitaire. If that's your idea of fun doesn't take any any
money once you buy the deck of cards,

(20:16):
you can play solitaire. You can read. Reading for me has
become very very enjoyable I love to read. That's fun. I
love to meditate. I love to do yoga. There's lots of things
that I love to do that don't take any money. I love to soak
in a hot bath. I love to dance to music. I put on some

(20:36):
music and I dance,
doesn't matter if anybody else is in the house. I don't
care. I love to sing to music. I sing all the time so...
those are all fun things to do,
and they're also great ways to get energy out of you or
shift and change your energy.
So,
then there's lots of things that I love to go see live music. I
love to enjoy a great meal out with friends. I love to go

(21:00):
see good movies. There's lots of things that I do for fun,
but I don't necessarily do those things that take money for
fun every day. But every day.
every day I do something that's fun that doesn't
necessarily cost any money. And sometimes fun for me is

(21:20):
texting somebody that I know, care about, love,
and tell them something very positive that I know about
them to be true that they're inspiring or that they're hard
working or if they're funny or that they're kind,
whatever that may be. And that's fun for me, too,
because I know it's going to make their day.
and at some point I get a nice text or an email back saying

(21:40):
that I made their day.
So again these things are not difficult,
but I want to stress again what I said at the beginning of
this. Winning leaders make champion choices
consistently. Consistently is at least daily. If you can
start to get to through some of these things throughout the

(22:01):
day becomes very powerful,
and it changes your mindset. It changes your mindset for
good,
permanently because that's how your mind starts to think
that and you look for the positive. You're doing the
positive, and you're having fun . And so,
think about for you. What's one of these areas that you can
work on and start today. Is it your body what are you

(22:24):
putting into your mouth? Is it your mind? What are you
putting into your brain? Is it your emotions what are you
thinking? Are you feeling a bunch of negative thoughts from
living in the past or worried about the future?
Then, bring yourself back to that positive thought,
and then have fun. Have fun. It's really that simple. It

(22:46):
will start to change and shift your mindset. And again, I
want to stress this is little tasks, little things,
little habits. I wrote a quote that said habits blow the
wind of change. It's very true. Habits blow the wind of
change,
so you have the power to start changing your life right

(23:06):
now,
even in this moment. You could go drink a glass of water. Y
ou could download one of those apps the YUKA app or the
HOOPLA app. If you have questions on any of these things or
you need help with them,
please don't hesitate to reach out to
me at louie@thegiftedleader.com, and I'd be happy to help you start or build some of these practices and habits. But again, winning leaders...winning leaders make champion choices consistently.
Today make your champion choices to be a winning leader

(23:37):
with love.
Thanks again for joining us and listening to this episode
of Leadership and Love.
I would like to challenge you to ask yourself what's one
thing that you heard today that you can implement
immediately to improve your leadership and accelerate your
growth.
If you've gotten value out of this episode or learned

(23:58):
something that you can implement today,
we'd ask that you please share it with those that you care
about.
Our goal is to create more leaders who are leading with
love.
