Being right killed my first marriage.

Not the big stuff. Not infidelity or abuse or incompatibility. The slow death that came from me needing to win every argument, having receipts for every disagreement, using my understanding of psychology and nervous systems to prove I was the more conscious one.

I'd win the fight. He'd say "you're right, I'm sorry." And intimacy would die a little more each time because when someone always has to be wrong, they stop bringing you their truth.

In this episode, I'm breaking down the addiction to being right - why your nervous system treats disagreement as survival threat, the actual chemical reward you get from "winning," and what it costs you in connection. I'm also sharing the exact practice that helped me shift from destroying relationships with my need to be correct to choosing devotion to love instead.

If you've ever felt that desperate urgency to make someone understand your perspective RIGHT NOW, this episode will show you what's actually happening in your body - and how to choose differently.

What We're Covering:

  • Why being right feels like literal survival to your nervous system
  • The dopamine hit that makes you addicted to winning arguments
  • What happens in your brain when you're activated (hint: empathy goes offline)
  • How dysregulation creates more dysregulation between partners
  • The signs you're activated and need to pause before you destroy connection
  • The exact phrases that shift conflict from combat to connection
  • What your partner actually needs from you (it's not perfect solutions or for you to be right)

The Truth: You cannot create connection from a disconnected state. When your prefrontal cortex goes offline and you're in fight mode, your only goal is defeating the perceived threat - which is your partner's different perspective. Your nervous system state determines how your words land, not the words themselves. Intimacy dies when someone always has to be wrong. The wedge gets deeper every time you prioritize being right over being connected.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
